marietta College traces its beginnings to the establishment of the Muskingum Academy, which was founded by pio-neer settlers in 1797, in Marietta, Ohio. The Academy be-came the first institute of higher education in the Northwest

Territory.In 1835, Marietta College received its charter from the State of Ohio

to offer college-level degrees. As a result, 175 years later, Marietta College now includes more than 40 buildings over 90 acres located two blocks from downtown Marietta.

Marietta College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, contem-porary liberal arts college. As an institution of higher education, Marietta College seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates through its educational programs. Consistently ranked by U. S. News and World Report among the best liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, Marietta has attained national recognition for many of its programs, including studies in leadership educa-tion.

The fall enrollment of the College was 1,450, including students from 40 states and 10 countries. The male-to-female ratio is nearly 50:50, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.

The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in 1788 by Revolution-ary War veterans and became the first settlement of the Northwest Territory. Now a city of 14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil boom of the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained a particular pioneer spirit of independence and outward New England charm. Its historical significance also makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around the country.

Marietta is a riverboat town situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, and many of the community’s most important celebra-tions and activities are associated with the rivers.

Marietta is part of the Marietta-Parkersburg metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 130,000.

2010 Preview

the Marietta College men’s soccer program begins a new era in 2010. The Pioneers, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Stephen Rose, will feature a talented young squad that will strive for a fourth straight trip to the OAC Tournament.

“We have a good group of young guys that are eager to prove them-selves on the field this fall,” Rose said. “We will also look for some key play-ers that have been a part of the past few successful seasons to lead us and provide a great example to our younger players. I think our commitment to hard work and teamwork will carry us and be a key to success in 2010.”

Marietta faces the challenge of having to replace eight seniors, includ-ing five that started for at least two straight years. It also does not have a goalkeeper with any collegiate experience on the roster. The Pioneers expect the return of 10 lettermen and five starters from last season. Senior defender Ryan Wong and junior midfielder Dustin Zimmerman will be asked to provide leadership on the pitch. Junior midfielder Michael Lomas, junior defender Trenton Tunnell and sophomore midfielder Brandon Siringer also return as starters and should play larger roles in 2010.

Seven players on the roster found their way into the scoring column last season. Tunnell, Wong, Zimmerman, senior midfielder Will Jacques and sophomore midfielder Andy Knauff all had one goal. Tunnell also con-tributed two assists, while Wong, Lomas and sophomore defender Ben Federici each added one assist on the year.

The Pioneers open the season with a night game at Don Drumm Sta-dium against Westminster Sept. 4. They will then take on Mount St. Joseph at Marietta Field Sept. 5. Both games are part of the annual Marietta Col-lege Classic. Marietta will begin its OAC slate when it plays host to Baldwin-Wallace College on Oct. 2.

stephen Rose has been appointed interim head men’s soccer coach for the 2010 season. Rose

becomes the 11th head coach in the 42-year history of the program.

“Steve’s dedication to the program over the last five years warrants this promotion,” Athletics Director Larry Hiser said. “All our coaches are excited to assist him and watch as the men’s soccer team flourishes. The expectations of the College will remain high, and I’m sure he will be up to the chal-lenge.”

Rose had been an assistant coach with Marietta’s men’s and women’s programs for the last five seasons and a full-time member of the athletics department since 2007. During his time with the Pioneers, he has been instrumental in the success of both squads. Rose has not only helped coordinate the play on the field and training off it but also the recruitment of the programs’ student-athletes.

“I would like to thank Mr. Hiser for the opportunity of becoming the head coach here at Marietta,” Rose. “Marietta is my hometown, which makes this extremely special to me. I am looking forward to working with our returning players as we prepare for a successful season in 2010.”

A graduate of Marietta High School, Rose returned to his hometown after attending Walsh University where he received his undergraduate de-gree in Communications in 2005. He then completed his Master of Arts in Liberal Learning from Marietta College in 2007. Rose was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers and garnered All-American Mideast Conference (AMC) honors twice. He also played basketball at Walsh for one season.

Rose earned his National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma in the summer of 2009. Rose also completed his NSCAA National Diploma in 2008 and his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” license in 2006. An alum of the local River Valley Soccer Club, Rose remains active in that organization as well as in the West Virginia Olympic Development Program. In 2009, the current Boys Director of Coaching led the RVSC’s U-17 Boys team to State Cham-pionship and a Region I appearance. Rose also coordinates all of the local youth soccer tournaments and camps at Marietta College.

“I am very excited for Pat to join our staff,” first-year Head Coach Stephen Rose said. “He brings a wealth of collegiate coach-ing experience. His knowledge of the game and his ability to recruit student-athletes will keep this pro-gram moving in a positive direc-tion.”

Svihlik comes to Marietta after spending the last five seasons as an assistant with his alma mater Walsh University located in Canton, Ohio. During his time with the Cavaliers, Svihlik gained valuable experience in all aspects of a successful collegiate soccer program. He also facilitated the annual Walsh University soccer camps and youth tournaments.

“I am extremely excited to come to Marietta and working alongside Coach Rose,” Svihlik said. “Coach Rose is a man that I have a great amount of respect for, and I am so grateful to be a part of his staff, as well as Marietta’s athletics department.”

Svihlik was a two-year letterman on Walsh’s soccer team before an injury forced him to transition from a player to the role of a student as-sistant for his final two seasons. He has continued his development as a coach, earning his NSCAA National and State Goalkeeping Diplomas as well as his USSF C License.

In addition to his duties at Walsh, Svihlik served as the Assistant Technical Director for Jackson Select Soccer Club. Since joining the club in 2007, he has coaches U-8, U-9, U-10, U-12, and U-13 teams. Svihlik also instituted technical sessions for youth organizations such as Little Kickers and Future High School Freshmen.

Svihlik, a native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, received his Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Walsh in 2007. He also earned his Masters in Education from Walsh in 2010.

“I look forward to working with the players in an attempt to make them the best possible student-athletes that they can be,” Svihlik said. “Only through a commitment to excellence can a team be in a position to attain a conference championship and that is what we will be striving for each and every day.”

Svihlik lives in Marietta.

the 2009-10 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football program completed its fourth straight unde-feated regular-season, while making its 13th overall Stagg Bowl

appearance. The Ohio Northern volleyball team recorded its 33rd straight winning season and made its 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Otterbein women’s soccer team advanced the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington’s Callen Martin won the indoor 55-meter dash na-tional title. Ohio Northern wrestler Luke Miller claimed the national title in the 157-pound weight class. The Mount Union women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Championship. The Heidelberg baseball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III World series, while the Ohio Northern softball team advanced deep into another NCAA Tournament.

Individually, the Conference was represented by over 60 All-Ameri-cans. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Maga-zine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in col-lege athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Ko-rean War and the Vietnam Conflict.

From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s.

Through the years, a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference con-sists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital Univer-sity, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC mem-ber school on July 1, 2000.

In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference cham-pion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Out-door track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s.

The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have con-sistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an exten-sion of the educational programs.

marietta Field has long served as the home of the Marietta College men’s and women’s soccer teams. Located on the south end of campus, it was recently transformed into one of the finest, natural grass soccer complexes in the

region.The Parents Campaign for the Field Project, led by Bob and Nancy

Gessner, was formed in 2004 to secure funding for the initial improvements to the soccer portion of Marietta Field, which is also home of the Pioneers’ softball complex.

The facility underwent a complete renovation before the 2005 season. The College installed a new natural-grass, laser-leveled playing surface with a state-of-the-art draining and sprinkler system, as well as bleachers and a walkway connecting it to the rest of campus. It also features an adja-cent field, which is used as a warm-up area and for training sessions.

Remaining money from that project, as well as additional funds raised by the Pioneer Club, allowed for the addition of a press box and storage facility in the summer of 2008. These installations helped make Marietta Field on of the College’s top athletics facilities.

The first competition on the new field came during the 2005 Marietta College Classic, annually held during the first weekend of September.

Athletics Director, Larry HiserLarry Hiser joined Marietta College

in March of 2008. He oversees a NCAA Division III athletics program with 18 varsity sports and the College’s recreation and intramural programs and facilities.

Prior to joining Marietta, Hiser was the Director of Athletics and Head Baseball Coach at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., from 1995-2008. Under his watch the Endicott teams won 37 conference championships and participated in 47 NCAA or ECAC tournaments. His baseball teams averaged over 20 wins per year in 13 seasons and won five league championships and one ECAC championship. Endicott also success-fully launched new programs for equestrian, lacrosse and football, while improving its facilities that now rank among the finest in New England.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio Northern Univer-sity in 1987, where he was an all-conference shortstop on the Polar Bears baseball team. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Physical Educa-tion/Athletic Administration from Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he was a graduate assistant. He joined Endicott College in the fall of 1994 as the Gulls’ first baseball and basketball coach.

The Oregon, Ohio, native is married to the former Susan Chick (of Williamstown, Mass.). The couple has two children, Dan, 11 and Allison, 9.

President, dr. Jean a. ScottA new era began at Marietta College

on July 15, 2000, when Dr. Jean A. Scott became the 17th President of the College. She is the first female president at Marietta College.

Most recently, Scott was president of Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass.

Scott graduated with a major in history from Westhampton College at the Univer-sity of Richmond where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in 1968. She then attended Harvard University and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974.

“I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the College with the rich traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said.

Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience for all of its students.
