UCF MEN’S SOCCER - ARMOR UPWith a deep, young roster and a motivated coaching staff, the UCF men’s soccer program is certainly one on the rise. Now in his third season at the helm at UCF, head coach Bryan Cunningham has stockpiled talent and geared his program for a breakthrough season.

The Knights have already shown improvement, increasing their win total by three games from 2007 to 2008 and finishing in a tie for third in Conference USA. UCF has also shown it will not back down from a challenge, facing four ranked opponents in 2008.

With a roster void of seniors, returning players like sophomore Kevan George, a C-USA All-Conference first-team selection as a freshmen, and a tremendous recruiting class joining the team, Cunningham has a talented group.

UCF offers several exciting academic programs to choose from, a breathtaking campus and nationally-recognized athletics facilities. Combining the highlights of the university and the men’s soccer program, UCF offers a college experience unlike any other.

UCF SOCCER COMPLEXThe UCF Soccer Complex plays host to both women’s and men’s soccer matches, as well as home track meets. Built in 1991, the UCF soccer field is natural grass and is lined to the dimensions of 347 feet by 200 feet (115.7x66.7 yards). The program also has access to a practice field adjacent to its game field.

Currently, the facility has a capacity of 1,000 and, in 2006, the bleachers were upgraded to feature more comfortable chairback seats. Plans for renovations are in place for the complex, which also serves as the home of the track and field program. Renovations to the facility are set to get underway in the near future and will include a new section of bleachers which will provide expanded seating, a press box and a building to house concessions and restroom facilities. Renderings of the planned additions are below.

DR. JOHN C. HITT • PRESIDENT John C. Hitt became the fourth president of the University of Central Florida on March 1, 1992, after nine-teen years of administrative experience and a distinguished academic career.

A native of Houston, Texas, he graduated cum laude in 1962 from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, earning a B.A. degree in psychology. He completed his M.S. degree in 1964 and his Ph.D. degree two years later, both in physiological psychology at Tulane University. His graduate study was supported by fellowships from the Danforth Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Hitt served as an assistant professor of psychology at Tulane before moving to Texas Christian University as an associate professor of psychology in 1969. Three years later, he became associate dean of the univer-sity. In 1974, he was appointed vice president of the Texas Christian University Research Foundation and was named dean of the graduate school in 1975.

In 1977, Dr. Hitt left Texas Christian University to become provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychology at Bradley Uni-versity in Peoria, Illinois. In 1987, he moved to the University of Maine as vice president for academic affairs and professor of psychology. In 1991, Dr. Hitt was named Maine’s interim president.

Early in his tenure, President Hitt outlined the following five major goals for UCF:• offer the best undergraduate education in Florida• achieve international prominence in key programs of graduate study and research• provide an international focus to the curricula and research programs• become more inclusive and diverse• become America’s leading partnership university

Under President Hitt’s leadership, enrollment at UCF has more than doubled, the number of doctoral degrees awarded each year has increased sevenfold, and research funding has increased from $6.2 mil-lion to $121 million a year. President Hitt has conferred more than 130,000 degrees during his presidency.

One of President Hitt’s greatest achievements occurred when the Florida Board of Governors approved the UCF College of Medicine, and the Lake Nona Medical City was founded. This multi-billion dollar devel-opment includes new facilities for medical education, hospital care, and biomedical research. The Lake Nona Medical City will be a principal driver of the central Florida economy for decades to come.

President Hitt’s current civic service includes membership on the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission Fundraising Campaign leadership cabinet and the MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando’s Council of Governors. He serves on the boards of the American Heart Association, Central Florida Part-nership, the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, SunTrust N.A., and United Arts. Presi-dent Hitt is a member of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment Leadership Circle. He is also a member, vice-chair, and chair-elect of the Conference USA Board of Directors.

President Hitt is two-term past-chair of the State University Presidents Association, a member of the Florida Council of 100, and founder of the Florida High-Tech Corridor Council. He is a two-term past-pres-

ident of the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities. He chaired the Governor’s Select Task Force on Healthcare Professional Liability Insurance and was a member of the Florida Distance Learning Task Force. He was a member of the Orange County Chairman’s Transportation Commission, and in 2008, he co-chaired the Orange County Underage Drinking Task Force.

President Hitt is a former member of the boards of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, EDUCAUSE, Orlando Health, and the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is a former member of the NCAA President’s Commission and the former Chair of Board of the Atlantic Sun Athletics Conference.

In recent years, the Central Florida community has honored President Hitt with a number of prestigious awards. He was the recipient of the 2008 Junior Achievement Spirit of Achievement Award. He has been listed for a number of years among the Orlando Sentinel’s 25 Most Powerful People in Central Florida and the Orlando Magazine’s 50 Most Powerful People. He received the Seminole Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement award in 2007. In 2006, he received the Orlando Business Journal’s first-ever Legacy Award, and in 2005 he was named the Orlando Sentinel’s Central Floridian of the Year. In 2002, he received the James B. Greene award from the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission; in 1999, he was awarded the Tree of Life from the Jewish National Fund and the Jack Halloway Star of Gratitude from United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida; and in 1998, he earned the John Young Award from the Greater Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. President Hitt is an avid fisherman and golfer. He has been married to the former Martha Halsted for 47 years, and they have two children and two grandchildren.

KEITH R. TRIBBLE • DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

The thread that has bridged together nearly three decades working in and around the collegiate community has been Keith Tribble’s history of building programs with strong foundations and

dynamic structure.

Since his start as Director of Athletics and Executive Vice President for the University of Central Florida Athletics Association on June 6, 2006, Tribble has quickly taken hold of the program’s blueprints and promised to lead with a principle that everyone associated with the program will also share - to “finish.”

In addition, the other focal point of his concentration is the oversight of the con-struction, expansion and completion of the noted UCF Athletics Facilities Master Plan. When finished, the plan will touch all areas of the student-athletes’ well-be-ing, including residential housing, academic and mentoring support facilities and state-of-the-art performance venues where UCF fans and supporters can cheer on the Knights. To date, Tribble has overseen $150 million in new construction and improve-ments to UCF athletic facilities since his arrival.

Through a renewed commitment, Tribble has been most proud of the record academic achievement of the UCF student-athletes during his first two years in Orlando. The Knights, for the third-straight year in 2008-09, placed the highest number of student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with 224 representatives maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better.

Much of UCF Athletics went from transitioning into Con-ference USA to competing for its titles in just a few short years. The football program has played for two C-USA

titles since 2005, winning the championship and coveted AutoZone Liberty Bowl berth in 2007. In 2007-08, other programs such as women’s soccer and softball, and members of the women’s track and field team, claimed C-USA titles. In 2008-09, men’s golf reigned over the league, in addition to a big Conference USA Tournament championship from women’s basketball. Over half of UCF’s programs have competed in NCAA postseason tournaments the past two years.

Successful student-athletes start with top-notch coaching and at UCF the commitment to coaching excellence has been evident. Among Tribble’s transactions so far has been the renewal of several successful veteran coaches, including Amanda Cromwell (women’s soccer), Renee Luers-Gillispie (softball), George O’Leary (foot-ball) and Kirk Speraw (men’s basketball).

Additionally, Tribble was instrumental in the hiring of several new head coaches, including Bryan Cunning-ham (men’s soccer), Todd Dagenais (women’s volleyball), Becky Frost (women’s rowing), Stephanie Nickitas (women’s tennis), Terry Rooney (baseball), Caryl Smith-Gilbert (women’s track and field/cross country) and Joi Williams (women’s basketball).

Tribble attended the University of Florida where he played offensive guard for three bowl teams. He gradu-ated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism (public relations and marketing). Tribble and his wife, Terri, have a daughter, Carlyn, and a son, Kyle.

Keith Tribble is committed to the concept of the well-rounded student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of their academic prowess off the field as well as championship results on.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEUCF student-athletes are supported by a nine-person professional staff of advisors and pro-gram coordinators from the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA). The ASSA mission is to support student-athletes’ academic development while exceeding satis-factory progress toward their degrees.

ASSA advisors coordinate tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, and priority class registra-tion for all current student-athletes and assist new Knights through the recruitment pro-cess. UCF student-athletes receive specific academic and athletic information at orientation as well as study skills and time management instruction through out the year. More than 50 computers are available for student-athlete’s use anytime during the academic year.

During the 2008-09 academic year, UCF placed a league-record 224 student-athletes on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better to earn a spot on the honor roll.

Thirty-four Knights earned the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. The medals are awarded to student-athletes who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better.

Jenny Heppert became the first UCF volleyball player to garner ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® honors during the 2008-09 season. The middle blocker graduated with a 4.0 GPA and earned her degree in biology.

From Bright House Networks Stadium to the UCF Arena, UCF student-athletes play and train in top-notch venues. The school’s always growing and improving athletics complex is part of UCF’s commitment to provide student-athletes with exceptional and modern facili-ties. In the past few years, this commitment has assured that the UCF athletics facilities are not only among the best in Conference USA, but across the nation.

The 45,000-seat Bright House Networks Stadium, the home of the UCF program, shared its debut season on campus in 2007 with another brand new facility - UCF Arena. Home to the Knights’ men’s and women’s basketball programs, the 10,000-seat venue also opened in the fall of 2007. The arena, which also hosts concerts and UCF commencement ceremo-nies, includes luxury boxes and suites, open concourse areas and numerous concession options.

Other facilities that have seen upgrades in recent years are Jay Bergman Field – home to the baseball program - and The Venue at UCF, the renovated previous arena which now houses exclusive modern practice facilities and offices for the men’s and women’s basket-ball programs, as well as an equally-spacious home facility for volleyball. Off campus, two new facilities opened in 2009 - the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center and the UCF Golf Practice Facility.

UCF’s Facilities Master Plan includes numerous facility enhancements in the coming years, including the planned construction of a new stadium and entrance structure at the UCF Soccer and Track and the expansion of Jay Bergman Field. The vision for a new academic services center is imminent, one which will provide student-athletes greater access to resources near their new Athletics Village residences, and further assist their progress towards their degrees and post-graduate success.

When UCF Athletics completes its Facilities Master Plan during the next decade, every sport and every student-athlete will have received the benefit of an improved facility to practice, train and compete for championships in.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING/SPORTS MEDICINE

SwimEx resistance pools offer a complete isokinetic aquatic therapy system - putting rehabilitation programs into a new league. Starting with 0 to 30,000 gallons per minute water flow, patients in initial stages of rehab can begin aquatic therapy sooner due to the buoyancy of water. Aquatic therapy treatment can extend into a full range of training and conditioning.

The strength and conditioning program is an integral component of UCF’s 16-sport athletic family. The most visible sign of the Knights’ commitment in this area is an 11,200-square foot weight room located in the middle of the Wayne Densch Sports Center. The state-of-the-art facility contains the finest free weight and machine equipment, cardio equipment and tread-mills. UCF also houses a weight room in The Venue, which is utilized by the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. Five certified strength and conditioning coaches monitor the progress of UCF’s student-athletes.

The UCF sports medicine facilities are fully equipped with the most up to date technology, including a SwimEx aquatic therapy pool, used to aid in advanced rehabilitation of the elite student-athlete. The main athletic training room is located in the Wayne Densch Sports Center with additional locations at The Venue, Jay Bergman Field, the UCF Softball Complex and the brand-new UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center. The sports medicine staff consists of six full-time athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers and approximately 60 undergraduate athletic training students.

WELCOME TO ORLANDO

One of the area’s biggest attractions is its year-round mild weather. At the heart of the Sunshine State, the region’s average annual temperature is a comfortable 72.4 degrees.

UCF students have easy access to one of the world’s most vibrant cities – Orlando. Looking for theme parks, attractions, museums, world-class shopping, great restaurants, golf courses, jogging trails and nature pre-serves? You can find it all here in Orlando.

Orlando is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. In 2007, 48.8 million visitors trav-eled to the region. Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Orlando and Sea World are just a short drive away from the UCF campus. The Kennedy Space Center, state parks and sandy beaches off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean are also all nearby.

Orlando is a frequent destination for today’s top national musical acts, who visit popu-lar venues like Hard Rock Live at Universal’s CityWalk and House of Blues, which is located at Downtown Disney. The city’s world-renowned theme parks have added a variety of new entertainment experiences, including Disney’s Cirque de Soleil and Uni-versal’s Blue Man Group performances.

Beyond the theme parks, downtown Orlando features an ever-changing skyline, fine dining options and a newly developed arts district. Cultural destinations in the city include the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orange County Regional History Center and Lake Eola Park.

ORLANDO SPORTING OPTIONSWith top-notch events occurring year round, Orlando is a premier destination for sports fans. The region is home to professional franchises, college football bowl games, world-famous auto races, several professional golf tournaments and much more.

The Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association brought excitement to the city last season with a tremendous run to the NBA Finals. The Magic will open the 2010-11 season in a new arena in downtown Oralndo.

The region’s sports calendar is busy with baseball each spring as Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex hosts the Atlanta Braves for Major League Baseball spring training. The Houston Astros train in nearby Kissimmee and the Washington Nationals prepare for the regular season close to UCF in Viera.

The Florida Citrus Bowl, the former home of UCF football, hosts a pair of college bowl games each winter - the Champs Sports Bowl and the CapitalOne Bowl. The stadium has also been the site of World Cup and Olympic soccer contests. In 2006, the World Baseball Classic held part of its inaugural event in Orlando.

In addition to UCF athletics events, the region also fea-tures the most prominent NASCAR race, the Daytona 500. Several other NASCAR races, PGA Tour golf tournaments and numerous action sports championships are also held in Central Florida.

According to Cunningham, both players, along with the rest of the returners, have made great strides since arriving on campus. “The big thing is leadership and their ma-turity on and off the field,” said Cunningham. “Kevan and Yaron are a pretty good guiding force for the rest of the squad, and the rest of the team in general matured over the course of last season. They have come in this season with a good attitude and a good disposition that I think will keep us moving forward.” With that talent more mature and experi-enced, Cunningham has stockpiled another ter-rific recruiting class with 16 newcomers joining the program. The combination has led to what the coach thinks will be the team’s biggest asset – depth. “Depth is going to be a tremendous strength,” said Cunningham. “It is something we have not had in the past. It is going to make practice more competitive which is always a good thing. The quality of players is as high as it has ever been.” That quality is highlighted by the class of newcomers, which features numerous play-ers with international playing experience, high school All-Americans and talented transfers. “From A to Z [the class] has very good play-ers who bring in different levels of experience and all different capabilities on the field,” said Cunningham. “From goalkeeping to defending to our midfield to our attacking players this class spans each facet of the game. I couldn’t single anyone out because all of them have re-ally done a fine job here.” Defensively, UCF improved substantially last season, decreasing the team’s goals against average from 2.10 in 2007 to 1.29 in 2008 and also recording five shutouts. For that improve-

ment to continue, the Knights will have to re-place three key members of the defense, most noticeably standout goalkeeper Sean Johnson. After a stellar sophomore campaign, Johnson left the Knights to play with the United States Under-20 National team and pursue a profes-sional career. “We have an extremely talented group of goalkeepers,” said Cunningham. “They are young and inexperienced, but they have all made tremendous strides in the last few weeks so we look to be very good there as well as deep for the next few years.” Despite the improvement in 2008, Cun-ningham acknowledges his squad struggled to score at times and that the lack of offense con-tributed to the Knights’ six one-goal losses. The team scored just one goal combined in over-time losses to ranked opponents Ohio State and USF. Having been so close to major upsets, creating and capitalizing on scoring opportuni-ties has been a focus of UCF’s practices this fall. “We talked about that the first night at the first team meeting, not only finishing games but creating and finishing scoring so we can avoid one-goal games in general and also those one-goal losses that have seemed to plague us the last few years,” said Cunningham. As for the team’s goals, UCF is focusing more on taking one game at a time than the season as a whole. The schedule includes in-state road trips to USF, Jacksonville and USF, two home tournaments and the always chal-lenging C-USA slate. “I think it is important to treat each game as the focal point and focus on the individual task associated with winning that specific game,” said Cunningham. “You do not start off by saying you are going to lose some games and

Above: Junior Yaron Bacher had a productive first season as a Knight in 2008. The junior, now a team captain, will be counted on for his contributions on the field and as a leader in 2009. As a sophomore, Bacher led the team in shots with 44 while also tallying two goals, three assists and seven points.

There is calmness in the way head coach Bryan Cunningham spoke about his team dur-ing preseason practice. Of course the third-year leader occasionally raises his voice to get his message across to a young team, but Cun-ningham is exuding a confidence that indicates his staff is cautiously optimistic about the 2009 season. In 2008, a young Knight team with just three seniors made impressive strides. The squad increased its win total by three games from the previous season, finished in a tie for third in the Conference USA standings and won the program’s first C-USA tournament game. “All and all it was a good year last year,” said Cunningham. “The team progressed the way that we wanted them to. They became more competitive in our non-conference schedule and really took on some good chal-lenges in the conference season. With a rather young team we were able to make a leap for-ward that propels us to where we are now.” Cunningham quickly turns to now when asked about last season. The coach is looking forward not back, and he is excited about what he thinks is ahead for UCF men’s soccer. “We have a lot of extremely talented in-dividuals,” said Cunningham. “We are going to have depth for the first time since I have been here as the head coach, which will be a nice luxury. Now it is just a matter of making sure all of the pieces of the puzzle fit. The players are being held to a higher standard and that it is going to make it a competitive year.” The team is void of seniors, but many piec-es of that puzzle are returners who played their first season for UCF in 2008. Kevan George was the lone freshman in league to be named to the C-USA All-Conference First Team after leading UCF in goals and points. Yaron Bacher, now a junior, led the Knights in shots last season after transferring into the program.

Kevan George was an All-Conference USA First Team selection as a freshman.

2009 MEN’S SOCCER • SEASON PREVIEWtie some games. You start off by saying you are going to go out there and put your best foot for-ward, treat each game individually and win.” The intensity level of C-USA games around the league should be at a maximum this sea-son, with the number of teams that make the league’s tournament cut in half from eight to four. A season ago, the regular season left the Knights in a four-way tie for third, but due to various tiebreakers they slipped to the sixth seed in the tournament. The same result this season, and UCF would be on the outside look-ing in while the top four seeds play in the C-USA Tournament in Memphis. “I think naturally there is that much more pressure as coaches and as players to be one of the best four teams in the conference,” said Cunningham. “Almost every team in the confer-ence has a chance to do some special things this year, and with only four teams going to the conference tournament, I think it is going to be more competitive than ever before.” While Cunningham thinks defending champion Tulsa has to be looked at as the fa-vorite and he does not state any specific goals, that confidence is still portrayed when he talks about how his team will stack up in the league. “We did a good job last year learning the ropes with a young team both learning what it takes to win in this conference and also what the margins for losing are,” said Cunningham. “Now you bring that group back and add some more talent and get them to buy into what we are doing and believe in themselves. With a talented group, there is no reason why you shouldn’t start the season thinking you should win the conference.” If the UCF players buy into their coach’s at-

titude and play with the same confidence that he has in them, the youthful Knights have a chance to have a memorable season in 2009.

GOALKEEPERS Cunningham’s roster contains four keep-ers, including three newcomers. The group will have the task of replacing Sean Johnson, who will miss the season while playing for the Unit-ed States Under-20 National Team in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The only returner in the stable is sopho-more Matt Urbano, who did not play in 2008 while backing up Johnson. The newcomers include freshman trans-fer Shawn Doyle, who began his collegiate ca-reer at NC State but did not see action for the Wolfpack. True freshmen Dillon Saffle and Will Hetico will also be in the mix for playing time. Saffle was a member of the U.S. U-17 National Team.

DEFENDERS Graduated seniors Ryan Roushandel and Bryan Collier will need to be replaced on the back line, but Cunningham and his staff brought in some talented defenders. Ben Hunt and Finlay Milne are both expe-rienced for freshmen after playing for the New Zealand U-20 National Team. Fellow freshman Andrew Quintana played for the U.S. U-17 Na-tional Team and was named a High School All-American by ESPN.com. All three are expected to compete for starting spots. Sophomore Matt Heffernan is back after playing in 16 games last season as a freshman.Freshmen Malcolm Reed and Adam Kraemer add depth to the back line.

Head coach Bryan Cunningham instructs Spencer Scott last season against Memphis. Cun-ningham molded a young Knight team to a third-place finish in C-USA in 2008, and the third-year coach is excited about another young, talented squad this season. The team includes 22 underclassmen.

Camilo Rendon played defender in 2008 af-ter transferring, but the junior will probably contribute at forward this year.MIDFIELDERS UCF probably will see its most experienced play in the midfield with George and Bacher back. The players ranked first and second on the team last season in points. George led the team in goals while Bacher had team-highs in both assists and shots. Experience is also back in the midfield with junior Josh Andone and sophomores Spencer Scott, Joe Crowley, Chris Feigenbaum and Korey Daigle. Newcomers Michele Martucci, Adam Kraemer and Eduardo Jimenez should all see significant time at the position as well.

FORWARDS The players up front will be key to UCF’s success this season after struggling to score in 2008. A mixture of newcomers, both transfers and freshmen, and returners should provide Cunningham with depth and options at the po-sition. After playing defender in 2008, junior Camilo Rendon is expected to see time and uti-lize his speed at forward. Gianni Piccoletti and Evan Kluge will also play forward after transferring to UCF. Piccolet-ti, standing at 6-foot-3, gives the Knights added height. Piccoletti and Kluge came to UCF from FAU and Pittsburgh, respectively. After both missed time last season due to injury, redshirt freshman Foday Kamara and sophomore Cameron Cooksey are healthy and add quickness up front. Talented freshmen Jeffrey Simmons and Nicholas Keown-Robson are also expected to contribute. Keown-Robson is one of three members of the New Zealand U-20 National Team currently playing for UCF.

In his third season at the helm of the UCF men’s soc-cer program, head

coach Bryan Cunningham continues to build the program with consistent improvement on and off the soccer field. In Cunningham’s second season in charge, the Knights improved their win total by three from the previous season to seven in 2008. Despite playing an extremely challenging slate that included 2007 national runner-up Ohio State and a ranked South Florida squad, the seven wins equaled the most by a UCF team since 2005. On the field, UCF finished the 2008 cam-paign with a 7-11-1 record, including three wins in Conference USA play to tie the 2006 squad for the program high. After the team tied for third and claimed UCF’s highest C-USA finish, Cunningham led the Knights to a 1-0 victory over Memphis in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament, the first win for the program since joining the league. Off the field, the men’s soccer team posted the highest grade point average for any men’s team at UCF, and the Knights had 14 players gain spots on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for having a cumulative grade point aver-age of 3.0 or better. After assisting in the continued develop-ment of the soccer programs at Pfeiffer, Appa-lachian State and South Carolina, Cunningham first joined the UCF men’s soccer program as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in May 2005 after serving in a similar position at South Carolina for three years. Cunningham’s first recruiting class was ranked in the top 30 nationally by College Soccer News and first in

he worked with eight All-South Region honor-ees, a SoCon Player of the Year, 13 All-SoCon selections and a College Soccer News Freshman All-American. ASU also boasted an Academic All-American and 18 players on the league’s All-Academic Team. In addition to his coaching experience at the collegiate level, he was also active in the North Carolina and South Carolina Olympic De-velopment Programs. On the international level, Cunningham presently serves as an advisor for the Northern Ireland U-18 Schoolboys and managers Bob Ramsey and Andy McMorran. Cunningham has been active promoting youth soccer in the Seminole and Orange Coun-ty school systems, as well as at three area Chris-tian schools, the YMCA and the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. For the past three years, he has been the guiding force in the men’s soccer team’s in-volvement in the annual UCF Youth Sports Fes-tival. A native of Allentown, Pa., Cunningham was a four-year letterwinner and three-time captain for the Pfeiffer University soccer team. The Falcons won two Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. He was also a four-time Scholar-Athlete and Dean’s List honoree, while appearing in the Who’s Who among American College Students book. Cunningham, who holds a bachelor’s de-gree in communications, resides in Orlando with his wife Amy, daughter Elyn Elizabeth and sons Alexander Michael and Ryan Michael.

the south region by StudentSports.com. By the end of 2006, three of those players garnered C-USA All-Conference honors. Following the resignation of Brent Erwin in January 2007, Cunningham was appointed in-terim head coach before being formally named to the position a month later. In his first season at the helm, Cunningham helped the offense score 24 goals, the most tallies since 2002. The Knights also claimed the New Mexico Invitational and the UCF Fall Classic titles en route to a 4-12-2 record. In the classroom, a total of 15 Knights earned spots on the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In Cunningham’s two seasons as head coach at UCF, three players have gone on to play professionally, three Knights have earned spots on the all-conference teams and two players have garnered C-USA all-freshman team accolades. Following the 2008 season, goal-keeper Sean Johnson was chosen to represent his country on the U-20 United States National Team. Over the summer of 2008, Cunningham was invited to Euro 2008 as a guest of the Swedish FA, Malmo FF and the Northern Ire-land Schoolboys. In the summer of 2010, he will serve in the same capacity for the World Cup in South Af-rica. He will also be going to Belfast, Northern Ireland, to complete his UEFA ‘A’ license. As a member of the South Carolina staff, Cunningham recruited several highly-touted student-athletes into the program. Among his recruits were Mike Sambursky, a 2007 draftee of Major League Soccer (MLS) champion Hous-ton Dynamo; Makan Hislop, captain of the U-20 Trinidad and Tobago National Team and Brad Guzan, an All-America and No. 2 pick in the

2005 MLS Super Draft. On the field, Cunningham helped guide the Game-cocks to a combined 21-14-3 mark and an NCAA Tour-nament berth in his final season. Both seasons USC was ranked as high as sev-enth in the national polls. In 2003-04, Cunningham saw the team post the high-est GPA on record as 10 players earned Southeast-ern Conference All-Aca-demic Team recognition. Prior to his stint at USC, Cunningham was an assis-tant coach at Appalachian State for five years. At ASU, The Cunningham Family

2008 SEASON IN REVIEW

The UCF men’s soccer program took a big step in the 2008 season. Despite hav-ing an extremely young team and starting multiple freshmen throughout the season, the Knights improved on their previous win total by three games, finished in a tie for third in Conference USA and advanced to the semifinals of the C-USA Champion-ship. Playing a difficult schedule including four ranked opponents, UCF went 7-11-1 in Bryan Cunningham’s second season at the helm. The team also notched three conference wins.

TAKING BIG STEPS With seven wins in 2008, UCF in-creased its win total compared to the 2007 season by three. It also marked the program’s highest win total since the 2005 team won seven contests. In C-USA play, the improvement was even more significant. After a winless first season in conference play, Cunningham led his squad to a 3-4-1 record in 2008. With 10 points, UCF finished in a four-way tied for third in the league, its highest league finish since joining C-USA.

MOVING ON Despite tiebreaking scenarios slipping the team to the sixth seed in the C-USA tournament, UCF posted a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Memphis in the first round. The victory not only moved the team to the semifinals, it also marked the first C-USA tournament victory for the program.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Two Knights had a considerable im-pact on the team in 2008 after transfer-

ring from other schools. Joining the team as sophomores, Camilo Rendon and Yaron Bacher each started all 19 games for the Knights. Bacher, a midfield transfer from Longwood, led the team in shots with 44 and was second on the squad with seven points. He tallied two goals and a team-high three assists. After transferring from Anderson Uni-versity, Rendon played on the backline and helped the defense significantly decrease its goals against average.

STRONG START Kevan George did not have much trouble getting acquainted to college soc-cer during his freshman campaign. The midfielder started all 19 games and led the Knights in goals (4) and points (10) despite taking only 23 shots. George was recognized for his play on numerous occasions during the season. On Sept. 15, SoccerFla.com named him its player of the week. Following the season, George was selected to the C-USA USA All-Conference first-team, the lone freshman to earn the honor. He was also picked to the C-USA All-Freshmen team.

NETMINDER Sophomore Sean Johnson had an incredible sophomore campaign as the Knights’ keeper. Including 14 saves in an incredible performance against SMU, Johnson stopped 108 shots on the season to lead C-USA. The total is also tied for the third most by a UCF keeper in program his-tory. Johnson played all but 11 minutes in the net all season, recording five shutouts.

He helped the defensive unit decrease its goals against average by nearly a goal from the previous season.

INTO THE FIRE Despite having a team with 18 fresh-men, Cunningham took his team through a challenging schedule, especially early in the season. UCF played its first five games on the road, including a trip to ninth-ranked Ohio State. UCF had a 1-0 lead against OSU until the 89th minute before falling 2-1 in double overtime. The Knights also played games against three other ranked squads, including at No. 23 Charlotte and No. 12 Tulsa, and at home against No. 12 USF. UCF also took USF to overtime before losing 1-0 in the 93rd minute.

CLOSE CALLS UCF’s season included 12 games de-cided by one goal or less. Eight of those 12 contests were either won or lost 1-0, with UCF taking five of them. The Knights jumped out to a good start with three wins in their first four one-goal games, but the team finished with a 5-6-1 record in the contests.
