Local rescue workers carry Mr Shadrack Chauke, the co-driver of a truck that capsized along the Thohoyandou road on Monday, to a waiting ambulance.

One person died and two others were injured in an accident between a sedan and a truck, fully laden with manure.

The accident happened on Monday afternoon about 6km from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on the Thohoyandou Road.

According to information pro-vided by the police, the driver of the truck, Mr Takalani Rammbu-

da, lost control over the truck when the front tyre of the truck allegedly burst. Rammbuda was travelling towards Thohoyandou and veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the vehi-cle of a woman traveling towards town. The woman cannot be identified as her next of kin still had to be notified at the time of going to press. She was pinned

inside the twisted wreck of her luxury Audi S6, while the truck capsized. Rammbuda and his co-driver, Mr Shadrack Chauke, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

Makhado police spokesperson WO Takalani Madzhigili said that the police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Thohoyandou road claims another life

Only one show for Makhado area?

“Killing for muti is a barbaric act”

The Makhado Municipality has this week defended its state-ment that there should be only one annual show for the region.

Makhado Mayor David Mu-tavhatsindi announced during his state-of-the-municipality address on 27 June that the an-nual Makhado Show will take place at the show grounds from 31 July to 2 August. “There is only one Makhado Annual Show. No other show must take place to confuse our residents,” said Mutavhatsindi. “We appeal to all members of our community to support this event, which aims to showcase the unique and diverse information and other products and services offered by coopera-tives,” he had added.

This remark once again highlighted the issue that some residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) had experienced with another festival that was held the same time as the Makhado Show during previous years.

Last year, the Makhado Show took place over the same week-end of 1 to 3 August as the In-ni-Berg Festival. The Inni-Berg Festival is a “Limpopo Arts and Marketing Festival” host-ed by the CVO Zoutpansberg School, outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), as a fundraiser for the school’s projects.

Following last year’s events, several residents accused the or-ganisers of the Inni-Berg Festival of deliberately planning the event to coincide with the Makhado Show, so as to function as an alternative "show" catering ex-

clusively for the white residents of town.

After Mayor Mutavhatsindi’s remarks, the local Democratic Alliance (DA) also contributed to the argument by stating that the mayor’s declaration was uncon-stitutional. Local DA councillor Brian du Plooy said that each [cultural] group had the consti-tutional right to organize their own events. “Council should not politicize everything but realize that there are many political groupings...” said Du Plooy.

Following this, the Makhado Municipality was approached for media comment regarding the mayor’s speech. Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bob-odi, who admitted to writing the mayor’s speech, was asked whether the remark by the mayor was referring to the Inni-Berg Festival. Bobodi was also specifi-cally asked why the municipality would object to another festival.

According to Bobodi, the municipality was not pointing a finger at any one event. “We were just urging people not to hold their cultural event at the same time as the Makhado Annual Show,” said Bobodi last Tuesday. He also mentioned the Soutpansberg Primary School’s Merry-go-Round event that will also be hosted during August, which the municipality also considers to be a show.

Bobodi further explained that the municipality was working towards the goal of having one annual event that will unite all cultural groupings within the mu-

nicipality. “We used to have one annual show, which was quite inclusive of all cultural groups within the area,” said Bobodi.

“We do not discourage other festivals, but we should have one big event which embraces all the groups within the municipality, such as the Makhado Annual Show. We should be seen as one in everything that we do.”

Traditionally the Makhado Show has either been held during the last week of July or the first week of August, from Thursday to Saturday.

In recent years, however, the date has deviated from this ar-rangement, and the municipality has failed to publish the date in a timely manner. Bobodi conceded this fact and said that the munic-ipality was busy addressing the problems, so that the Makhado Show can be an event that will bring the local community to-gether.

The organisers of the Inni-Berg Festival were also approached for comment about their choice of date for the event. In an official e-mail, they refrained from com-menting. Unofficially the news-paper has, however, learnt that the organisers usually choose and publish the date about 10 months before the event, so as to book the performing artists. In addition, they chose this year’s date after consulting with various church-es and charity organisations in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to ensure that the InniBerg Festival would not draw attention from any other fundraising events.

Killing for muti its a barbaric act that is tarnishing the im-

age of black people, particularly the Venda-speaking people.

This behaviour is mushroom-ing in Vhembe District and it is a societal issue that must be a con-cern to all of us. What happened in Tshitavha recently, where a woman was cruelly killed, signals that our people are not refraining from throwing their beliefs in a dustbin. A believe that human parts help businesses to boom its ill decisive.

Business management and other related knowledge are the pillars of success in any business, not human parts. Let's all think of big businesses such as Vodacom, Spar, Shoprite

and Boxer, to mention a few ... Those businesses are ballooning, because of supply that meets demand. If people provide what the markets require, success pre-vails. Human life is worth more than expectations of the killers and my appeal is for all business people to have good strategies tested to maximise their profits than involving themselves in a primitive approach.

Let me use this opportunity to congratulate police officers for their arrests of those who are allegedly linked with the recent killing. I personally believe that justice system and police force should work with the community to deeply dig all the information that can lead to more arrests. All

the culprits participated in the conspiracy and killings must be punished to send a lousy message that human life is important that any other things.

Political parties, business councils, traditional leaders, the pastors forum and all community leaders need to take a lead on condemning killings for muti purposes. The similar unity that people of Vhembe showed during the case of killing for muti of Maanda Sendedza in 2005 must be revived to win this war. United we stand divided we fall, let all those with any information report it to the police and know that they are protected.

Mabirimisa diverts stinking sewage riverThe general manager of the Mabirimisa Bus Service, Mr Robert Mabirimisa, was not very impressed when he visit-ed the Vhembe Municipality's water department office in Makhado and discovered that the duty register said that the sewerage problem at the bus depot had been attended to, which reflects the opposite of the truth in the case.

Last week, Limpopo Mirror carried a story stating that the company was very upset after a municipal official threatened them with arrest if they should continue diverting the problem-atic river of sewage which had flooded the depot's yard since June.

“I went to confront Mr David Mukosi (Vhembe District Mu-nicipality's manager of water services in Makhado) with our problem, but he was not in the office,” said Mabirimisa. “That was when I noticed a register book on the table, with the name of our company and the word 'Done' written in front of it.”

Mabirimisa then inquired about the meaning of 'Done' alongside the compa-ny's name. The lady who was in the office informed him that it meant that the problem had been fixed.

“I got so furious that I called Mr Mukosi, even though his phone had been on voice mail when I last tried to get hold of him in the morning,” Mabirimisa said. “My call went through and, when he heard that it was me, he accused me of ly-ing to the newspapers about his name and the fact that the sewerage problem had not been fixed.”

Mabirimisa indicat-ed that he eventually informed Mukosi that there was a register at the bus depot's en-trance, where every visitor had to sign in first before entering the premises. The mu-nicipal workers would have signed the register if they had come, said Mabirimisa. “He then

told me that the workers who had supposedly visited the site (depot) were then misinforming him,” Mabrimisa explained.

The company tried to bar the sewage from flooding their yard by placing stone slabs and plas-tic sheets along the fencing, but the stinking water still flowed into the yard. They then decided on Tuesday to divert the sewage from flooding the back of their building.

“We hired a TLB to divert the sewage in the opposite direc-tion,” he said. “We are no longer afraid of their arrest threats because, even if our building finally crumbles down due to this dirty water, they will not pay us a cent. So far, we have used our own money to see doctors after hazardous sewage caused a terrible flu.”

Ever since the problem start-ed last month, the company has suffered financial damages calculated at about R40 000. “At one time, our big compres-sor was damaged by the water from this dam and we had to get it fixed at around R30 000,” Mabirimisa said.

The raw sewage also affect-ed the paving, back walls and ground badly.

The sewerage system from and outside the LTT Abbatoir has been dysfunctional for years, and it formed an odorous dam along the road and the railway lines across Malherbe Street. It seemed that Transnet had complained about the perpetual mess which flooded the rail lines (and was damaging the rail infrastructure as well) and the municipality had to divert the sewage to the depot's yard, said Mabirimisa.

On Tuesday, Vhembe District Municipality's media liaison officer, Mr Moses Shibambu, said he had yet again contacted different officials at the Makha-do office, who all informed him that the sewerage problem had been fixed.

However, Mabirimisa indicat-ed that the company remained shocked and appalled by the municipality's unhelpful attitude towards the very people who paid for services in the munici-pality. “I am now labelled a liar when I speak out,” he said.

The company tried to bar the sewage from flooding their yard by placing stone slabs and plastic sheets along the fencing.

Victim of alleged police brutality to sueA night out with friends at the weekend ended up in a nightmare for a Tshakhuma man, when his right leg was broken in an alleged brutal attack by the local police.

Andani Muregu (25) of Tshakhu-ma-Luvhalani, son of the late fi ery youth leader, Dzivhuluwani Muregu, said he was with friends from a birthday party in the early hours of Saturday morning when they made a stopover at a fi re along the road. “It was cold and when we saw people warming themselves around the fi re, we decided to join them. We had been there for some minutes when the po-lice came and ordered us to leave the place. We ran in different directions and, in the process, one of my friends lost his shoes,” said Muregu.

Muregu, who has just fi nished writ-ing his matric upgrade examinations, said he and the friend went back look-ing for the shoes. “I was helping my friend to search for the shoes, using my phone torch, when the police came back for us. We hid in nearby bushes, hoping that they would go away, but they searched for us and found us hiding in the bush.”

According to him, they ran away from the police, “but this time they threatened us with a gun and we had to stop. We pleaded with them not to hurt us, but the one with the gun started hitting me. They also used pepper spray on us and when I tried to run away, another policeman kicked me on my left leg and I felt numb, with all the feelings in my leg gone.”

He added that he was taken to the Levubu Police Station where he was

ordered to get out of the van. “I could not as my leg was broken and I was in great pain. They checked my leg and found that it was indeed broken and that I had spray on my face. I was giv-en water to wash my face and taken to Tshilidzini hospital,” added Muregu.

He said he was also threatened with arrest if he should open a case against the police, but he said he would not keep quiet in the face of the injustice meted out to him. He said he was go-ing to seek legal counsel when he was discharged from hospital. “They must pay for what they did to me. They can-not go about attacking p e o -ple

and getting away with it. I am going to take the legal option,” he said. Limpopo police spokesperson Brig-adier Hangwani Mulaudzi said if he had indeed been assaulted there was nothing that would stop him from opening a case.

“No one is above the law. If needs be, he should see the sta-tion commissioner at Levubu, who will assist him in opening the case,” said Mulaudzi.

Mmbengeni Netshidzivhe of Lwamondo tied the knot with his long-time sweetheart, Rudzani, during a ceremony held at the Rhema Kingdom Life Centre - Lwamondo on Saturday. Chief Zwithuzwavhudi Mikosi (seated right), his family and his guests pose for a photo during the event.

“Obey your leaders and submit to them...”In Hebrews 13:17, the Bible says people should obey their leaders and submit to them. This is exactly what the in-habitants of Gondeni La Hamabilu are doing.

Each year, the community and the church under the Godeni La Mabilu Church and the Pastors' Forum set aside a special day and visit the local royal palace for prayers and to give their chief some gifts. The royal palace of Chief Gilbert Zwithuzwavhudi Mikosi of Gondeni was full of amens and hallelujahs at the week-end, with members of different churches decked out in their church regalia.

Mr Moses Mphanama, one of the co-

ordinators of the function, said the idea originated three years ago when 15 dif-ferent churches decided to come together and choose a day for worship at the chief’s palace. “The first thing that came to our minds was fostering unity among the different churches in the village. It was also influenced by the living conditions in the village, which had been ravaged by crime, diseases and deaths which had reached alarming proportions. Another of our aims is to bring prayers to the chief and also to fortify the palace with the blood of Jesus,” he said.

He said the three years that they had been holding the prayer meeting, things

had changed for the better in the com-munity. “We have seen a tremendous improvement in the lives of the residents of this village. The unity that is prevailing is something that we are proud of,” added Mphanama.

Speaking during the event, the president of the Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, urged the church to break the silence and not to keep quiet in the midst of the ills overwhelming so-ciety. He urged men, especially those in leadership positions, to lead by example and to look after their families in response to a report that men were abandoning their homes for other women.

Hawkers who had previously been trading alongside the N1 where it passes through the Soutpansberg mountain, are in dire straits. Since the SA National Road Agency (SAN-RAL) erected barriers on the side of the road, business has come to a virtual standstill and most of them were left without any means of deriving an income.

In February 2012, SANRAL served the hawkers with notices of eviction and warned them to vacate the area because trading along the national road is illegal. The hawkers apparently also started encroaching on land belonging to private individuals. The hawkers initially ignored the authorities and persisted in trading alongside the road. SANRAL then erected wooden barriers next to the road, which made it almost impossible for motorists to pull off and buy fruit and vegetables from the hawkers.

When SANRAL was contact-ed for comment shortly after the barriers had been erected, they stated that they had little other option and this was the only effective way to address the problem. The communi-

cations manager of SANRAL, Vusi Mona, then appealed to the newspaper and the local communities to find vacant land that is located along the N1 road. “SANRAL appeals to your newspaper, its readers, and the residents in the pass to make available some property that is located alongside the N1 and is safe to provide access in and out and that can be developed into a trading area that will hopefully then remove the traders from the edge of the N1, so they can operate within this facility,” said Mona.

Such a solution has seemingly not yet come to the fore and the hawkers are struggling. A lobby group was formed and pleas for assistance were made to the office of the President, the local municipality, the Premier’s office, SANRAL and the Human Rights Commission. The hawk-ers argued that it would have been better if the authorities tried to understand their griev-ances and provided solutions.

Talking to Limpopo Mirror last Friday, hawkers acknowl-edged that they were trading along the N1 without permits. They said they had applied for hawkers' permits from the

Makhado municipality, but these were not granted.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi said the area was controlled by SANRAL and the municipality could not assist. “Yes, we would like for those people to have their own spot and continue to trade legally, but unfortunately we don’t have authority in that area and it’s illegal to trade along the national road,” said Mr Bobodi.

One of the hawkers is the 44-year-old Ms Elisah Maruli, who explained that she had been trading at one spot along the N1 road since 2002. Since the barri-ers were erected, she had to pull her child out of college as she cannot afford the tuition fees any more. The mother of four and a single parent said she could no longer afford to provide for her family. She also lost the money she had invested in her stock.

Ms Magret Tshivhase (44) from Nzhelele said she was suffering and her children were lingering around the streets because she could not afford to pay for their education fees. “My child passed Grade 12 and she has to stay at home because we no longer have any source of income,” she said.

No income for struggling “N1-hawkers”

Last Friday, illegal hawkers gathered along the N1 in their original spot to decide how they could tackle their challenges.

Tombstone stolen at Tshikota graveyardUnknown thieves removed a huge tombstone from the Tshikota graveyard last week. The thugs also stole the gate of the graveyard and the window frames of the guard room.

Visitors to the grave-yard found on Saturday morning that part of the expensive tombstone and several other small-er headstones had been stolen and that other stones had been broken.

Ms Mapule Moswane said they were not aware that the expensive tomb-stone would attract thugs.

“We spent a lot of money to erect the tombstone because we want our beloved fam-ily member to rest in peace. We want the po-lice to bring the culprits to book, because many villagers use their last money to erect these tombstones," she added.

A member of the c o m m u n i t y p o l i c -ing forum (CPF), Ms Thembani Ndlovu, said the community was shocked by the theft of the tombstones. She said community members would patrol the streets during the night in an anti-crime campaign until crime was reduced to zero percent in the Tshikota area.

She said that people who were doing “these barbaric deeds came from the community,” and appealed to villag-ers to report any crime or wrongdoing to the police.

According to her, thugs have lately been

targeting the most expensive tombstones in the graveyard. Makhado police spokesperson W/O Takalani Madzhigili said

that the police had not received any report from the community about the stolen tombstones.

Faith launches national imbizo focus weekThe Minister of Communi-cations, Ms Faith Mutham-bi, has urged communities around the Vhembe region in Limpopo to make use of the government’s initiatives and interact with the government about the challenges they face with service delivery.

She opened the national im-bizo focus week during a cere-mony at the old parliamentary buildings last Sunday.

“Government feels that it is imperative to interact with peo-

ple and listen to their concerns and views. We are calling on people to tell us their concerns and suggestions. It is our duty as government to ensure that citizens have access to govern-ment,” said Muthambi.

“We visited a project where I was personally able to assess first-hand the progress in the implementation of the work of the government through its programmes and policies. We saw Da U Vhone Primary Coop-erative, which makes polish and

grows vegetables. This project is critical as the government sees food security and small entrepreneurial activities as crit-ical in sustaining local economic development,” she added.

Muthambi mentioned that the adoption of an imbizo ap-proach was testimony to the government’s commitment to transparency and accountable service delivery.

“People can voice their con-cerns, opinions and suggestions to their representatives, whom

Min Faith Muthambi, Ms Selinah Mukhithi (chairperson of the Dau u Vhone Polish Project at Tshisaulu) and Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe hold a container of polish produced at the project. The mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi (far right), looks on.

Music fraternity mourns

Celebratory funeral service for MushwanaThe local music fraternity suffered a terrible blow when a highly respected, multi-tal-ented musician succumbed to illness last week.

Thomas Hlupheka Mushwana (42) was buried during an emo-tional, but celebratory, ceremo-ny at Tshandama village, near Tshilamba, on Saturday. Fellow musicians, family members and friends braved the chilly weather to bid farewell to the renowned musician who, during his life-time, played in gigs as far as France and Switzerland.

Born in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe, in 1972, Thomas displayed his musical talent at a very young age. His brother, Kenias Mutirik-idi, remarked, “He taught himself to play guitar at the age of 10. He then went on to teach himself how to play drums and percus-sion. He was very young when he formed a school band called Risenga, which later released three albums. He then moved on to establish the Dynamic Broth-ers, which commanded a huge following in Zimbabwe. This was followed by his relocation

to Musina in the early eighties, where he helped to establish Tafara Band.”

Due to his courageous spirit of experimenting in life, Thomas moved to Tshandama in 1989 and settled with the Netshisaulu fam-ily for the past 25 years. He was instrumental in organizing the first Tshingondo music festival, which was held at the University of Venda stadium in the nine-ties. The festival featured great Zimbabwean musicians such as Thomas Mafumo, Devera Ngwe-na Jazz Band and Paul Matavire. During his lifetime, Thomas also played with Joseph Mbiza (aka Zozo), Peter Chirobe (aka Tshigomboza), Mashaka Band, Vhembe Heritage and the late disco king, Peta Teanet. He also released one Tshingondo album.

Representing the Netshisaulu family, Maradzhe Netshisaulu said that Mushwana was a “true son to us and we are very sad that he left us when we still need him most. We are happy that his family from Zimbabwe has joined us to bid him farewell. He had a good sense of humor and

he was full of jokes and found fun in everything. We will surely miss him.”

Representing the music frater-nity, Zozo said: “We have lost one of the most talented musi-cians ever produced during our lifetime. Thomas could play any instrument and he was a valuable asset to the music industry. We were not surprised when he got offers to play internationally, because he was a rare brand in the music industry. We will really miss him.”

Bishop Samuel Mulovhedzi of Pile Triumph Revival Church officiated during the funeral in the Tshandama graveyard.

they elected into of-fice.” Prior to the launch, Muthambi and local councillors interacted with the Thohoyandou com-munity. Muthambi also told councillors and mayors to help in speeding up ser-vice delivery to poor communities.

The chairperson of the South African National Civic As-sociation (Sanco), Ms Magdalene Net-shiavha, urged com-munities to make use of the opportuni-ties to address their concerns.

The senior communications officer of the GCIS, Mr Thanyani Netshikweta (left), presents a satellite decoder to Ms Selina Phiri, station manager of Musina FM.

Free satellite decoders for community radio stationsAs part of empowering the 14 com-munity radio stations in Limpopo, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) is distributing free satellite decoders to assist the stations to successfully migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting.

“Digital broadcasting is far more efficient, allows better picture and sound quality and ultimately has the potential to increase the amount

and variety of content and increase consumer choice, with many posi-tive economic spin-offs,” said GCIS senior communications officer Mr Thanyani Netshikweta recently when he handed the decoder to Musina FM.

Netshikweta said that, following the amendments to the digital mi-gration policy by the government, the broadcasting environment was going through an amazing change, due to the development of digital

technology. “The Go digital South Africa leaflet has also been developed by Government as a means to educate, inform and create awareness about the digital migration.”

Netshikweta said the government had a role to support community media because they played an important role in building the local communities they served. “Besides advertising on community media, it is very important for us to support them with working tools that will make their work easier. We understand the hardships encountered by these institutions. We also know that there is unwilling-ness to sponsor community media by some big businesses who think that going to mainstream media is the best option.”

Netshikweta said the majority of community media houses were struggling financially. “The fact that they are struggling with income generation is a concern to us. Some community media staff members work on a voluntary basis and some get limited stipends because they have the love of their communities at heart. It is very important that these media houses are given support to continue their good work of keeping our communities informed.”

Ms Silina Phiri, station manager of Musina FM, thanked the GCIS for their support.

Roads

“Be patient”

and getting first-hand information, the MEC hit the ground running by going personally to some of these roads in the province to see for himself,” said the department in a media release.

One of the roads he visited is in Fetakgo-mo, Sekhukhune, where he did find the road in poor condition. “Indeed, some of our roads are not in good condition and, as government, we are busy establishing the Limpopo Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan, which will be our plan to deliver quality infrastructure, including roads, in our province. We urge our people to be patient as we assure them that their roads will be attended to. In the main, we will re-gravel the roads as we wait for the huge roll-out of the roads throughout the prov-ince,” said Ndou.

Most of Limpopo’s road infrastructure was damaged by floods ear-lier this year, especially in the Sekhukhune and Vhembe regions, where there is a huge demand for tarred roads. “This has then forced the de-partment to repriori-tize, so as to rebuild the damaged bridges that disconnected communi-ties from the centres of economic activities and social amenities such as schools and clinics,” the department said.

Versatile Limpopo media practitioner and communicator Naledzani Rasila said community media have a role to encourage community participation on issues affecting their lives through development communication.

A senior manager of corporate branding and marketing in the premier’s office, Rasila was addressing communicators, traditional leaders and community media representatives during the recent quarterly

meeting of the Musina Municipality Com-municators Forum.

“Community media have an obligation to inform, educate and entertain commu-nities, while at the same time providing relevant, value-adding content dominated by local news. It must be prioritized by empowering information benefiting the local communities it serves. The reports should be well researched and the media houses should try to avoid unconfirmed

reports. Despite the hard work that com-munity media are doing, they are still viewed as providers of human resources to mainstream media,” said Rasila.

It was during that meeting that the communication strategy of the Musina Municipality was reviewed. “This com-munication strategy is a tool that guides the communication system of the mu-nicipality. It will serve as a basis for all communication needs for us,” said Nathi

The Word of Power Church hosted a party for their pastor’s wife at Rabali a fortnight ago. She recently received her master’s degree in nursing. The church said Mrs Reginah Masakona’s achievement was worth celebrating, as her degree would serve as motivation and encouragement for the youth and women in rural areas. Masakona is the wife of Pastor Eddy Masakona. She obtained her diploma in general nursing (1995) at the Giyani College of Nursing and got a BA in Nursing Education and Nursing Management in 2005 from the Potchefstroom Campus of the North West University (NWU). She also received her MA from the NWU. In our photo, Pastor Eddy Masakona holds the microphone for her as she addresses the people.

He added that the forum was aimed at strengthening interactions between the municipality and the community. Chief Solomon Nduvheni aexpressed appreci-ation towards Musina Municipality for recognizing the role played by traditional leaders in communicating government messages. “Even before the advent of civilization, traditional leaders were natural communicators, whose role was to unite their subjects. We are happy that the municipality continues to position us where we rightfully belong.”

The Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Jeremiah Ndou, has called on the people of Lim-popo to be patient as he works out a plan for the provision of quality road infrastructure to the province.

Ndou said this after his office was inun-dated with letters, visits and calls from dif-ferent communities around the province, all asking him to provide quality roads in their areas. “In addressing this matter

Shadrack Mahlangu (29) from Water-val is an artist who specialises in a less common art form – that of ‘dancing dolly-dolls’. He uses his dancing dol-ly-dolls to entertain people around Vhembe district.

“People seem to love my art, because whenever I perform, they shout and call for me to do more,” he said. “It’s so amazing how a small artist like me can have a large crowd of people eating out of my hand.”

Mahlangu explained that the amazing,

versatile moves of his dolly-dolls are not found in the dolls as such. “If you want to do this kind of work and excell at it, you need to have active hands to control the strings attached to the dolls, so that they can dance as you wish. I also started dancing to music at a very young age, and it’s the reason why I am able to make my dolly-dolls dance like this.” Mahlangu originally came from Nelspruit in Mpu-malanga and arrived in the Vhembe dis-trict as a labourer at a construction com-pany some years ago. When the project

was done, he chose to remain behind in Limpopo, but the only challenge was that he was left without employment. “Some-how, I remembered how I used to craft art objects as a young boy back in Nelspruit,” he said. “I thought, and thought that, yes, I must make dancing dolls. Today I use this couple to entertain people in public spaces.” After creating his dolls and stag-ing public performances, people started calling him Mr Dolly-dolls because he walked around with his dolly-dolls. “I laughed a lot when I heard people calling me Mr Dolly-dolls,” he smiled. “But it also felt good because people were now identifying me with my work. It still feels good, indeed.” His dancing creations are made from old clothes, thin strings, wire, water bottles, normal doll’s heads and baby shoes. “It’s a guy and a girl; they dance – I tell you, Sizwe and Thembi (dolly-dolls) know how to twist their waists!” laughed Mahlangu.

His audience stood and watched him in amazement at Elim on Saturday. “This kind of art is wonderful!” said Timhaka Ngoveni, a resident at Valdezia. “I have seen this man a couple of times. And each time when I see him, I stop to watch him dance with his ‘little people’. I fi rst saw him in Thohoyandou some time last year.” Those who are interested in Mr Dolly-Dolls’ art can contact him at 073 268 8850.

Education

DA calls for debate on drop-out rateThe Democratic Alliance will be writing a letter to the Speaker in the provincial legislature to request an urgent debate on the drop-out rate of learners at Limpopo schools.

“The latest 2013 School Realities report indi-cates that enrolment between Grades 1 and 3 has drastically dropped from 149 000 to 128 000. In the senior phase, the enrolment between Grades 10 and 12 has decreased immensely from 187 000 to 86 000. This means an estimated 100 000 have dropped out of school between Grade 10 and 12, which accounts for more than half of all learners,”

Tug-of-war over compensation of lossesA body representing communi-ties adjacent to the Kruger Na-tional Park (KNP) is accusing the park of giving it a raw deal.

This has resulted in a war of words between the KNP and a task team, the body formed by the community members to fight for compensation for losses attribut-ed to damage caused by animals.

Recently, the park paid com-pensation to farmers in Mpuma-langa and will soon start making payments to those in Limpopo, although the task team says the amounts paid are less than the

ones agreed on.At least 60 farmers in Mpuma-

langa have already been paid, and it is envisaged that some of the farmers in Limpopo will receive payment very soon.

A spokesperson for the KNP says that they have done much to satisfy those who lost their livestock, but the leader of the task team, Mr Thomas Shibambu, disagrees.

“They are paying for the losses dating back to 2008, but we de-mand payment for losses dating back to 1993. This is contrary to

our discussions with them,” says Shibambu. He says his organisa-tion will be taking the matter to the Public Protector.

Shibambu says his organisa-tion represents communities in 22 villages adjacent to the park, and it has proposed the following compensation rates: R8 000 for a cow, goat (R200), donkey (R1 300), pig (R1 600) sheep (R600), mule (R600) and horse (R10 000). It is said that the KNP has allegedly made an announcement about the rates it will pay. “We objected, but they are going

ahead to make payments without even consulting us,” says Shibambu.

The spokesperson of the park, Mr William Mabasa, said the park was going ahead to pay compensation. “Only one person in the name of Shibambu is refusing to accept what we can offer,” said Mabasa. He added that the park was not legally bound to pay compensation, “but is doing it as a way of showing humanity and this should be appre-ciated by community structures.” He said they would not be able to pay for losses incurred earli-er than 2008 because the park could not afford to do so.

Mr Risimati Thomas Shibambo says they are given a raw deal by the Kruger National Park.

The assistant coach of Black Leopards, Mr Joel Masutha, has moved to Chippa United, where he will work as assistant coach to Mr Kostadin Papic. The two worked together at Black Leopards last season.

said Mr Jacques Smalle, provincial DA leader, in a press release.

Smalle said the province needed urgent de-bate in the legislature on this topic. “Children who drop out of school before matriculating have a significantly reduced chance of finding employment and maximising their full poten-tial. Our education system is not serving these children in the way it should,” Smalle said.

Smalle’s aim is to help find ways to improve the school system to retain more learners going through to Grade 12, so that young people can be prepared for professional employment. “We cannot allow another generation of young people to be lost because of a broken education system,” Smalle said.

Support Mandela Day

Well-known cleric and collaborator of Limpopo Mirror delivers inaugural lecture at Unisa

The late former President Nelson Mandela once said, after his release from prison, that people all over the world “chose to care” about him and worked tirelessly to free him.

The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) supports this freedom of choice and would like to continue his legacy to care about other people and make a difference in their lives as part of Mandela Day on 18 July.

The hospital will continue to support this day and this year expects its own staff to pledge their time, effort or money towards a good cause (of their choice), thus spreading the support and help through the greater Makhado and Vhembe district.

Residents can also support the hospital’s initia-tive by making a pledge. The pledge can be anony-mous and is totally by choice. It can take any form, such as a donation, labour, community service or whatever creative initiative people can come up with. The pledge must be made on a pledge form that is available from the hospital and will be placed on a “Wall of Pledges” inside the hospital until 23 July. The pledge can be fulfi lled at any time.

“We would like to bind the pledges in a book and send it to the Nelson Mandela Trust on behalf of our hospital and our community,” said Ms Anneke Stroebel of the hospital.

For more information or a pledge form, phone Anneke 083 326 6073 or e-mail her at [email protected].

A collaborator of the Limpopo Mirror for many years, Prof Derrick Mashau, recently delivered his inaugural lecture at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

Mashau, who received his PhD in missiology at the North West University (NWU) in 2004, is now a full professor in the Department of Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology in the College of Human Sciences at Unisa. The title of his inaugural lecture was Reimagining mission in the public square: Engaging hills and valleys in the African city of Tshwane.

Mashau was born and raised at the village of Ha-Mashau as the son of the late Chief Frank Mukhas-wakule Mashau and Mrs Evelyn Nwa Murubana Mukhwevho. He is married to Ignetia Mashau (a lecturer in Inclusive Education at Unisa) and the two are blessed with four children, Mulanga Are-hone, Rivhusanae Ndwelatsiwana, Ndwelavhawe Muzwali and Adaho Rivhawe.

He served as a lecturer at the NWU in 2001 and 2002, and in 2003 he was appointed as Professor of Missiology at the Theological School of the Reformed Churches Potchefstroom and, at the same time, appointed senior lecturer in theology at the NWU. At the time, it was still called Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, before

the 2004 merger. He served as chairperson of the Department of Missiology from 2003 until 2013 and in March 2013 he joined Unisa.

As an academic, Mashau has promoted seven masters students and 11 doctoral students. He is currently working with fi ve masters students and seven doctoral students. He is a prolifi c writer who managed to publish seven books, one of which was co-authored with an international author, Prof Roger Greenway, emeritus professor at Calvin Theological Seminary (Grand Rapids), who spe-cializes in urban missions.

Prof Mashau has travelled the world and pre-sented many papers at international conferences of note. He visited, among others, the following countries: Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia, Nether-lands, Belgium, USA, Britain, Scotland, Finland, Canada and Indonesia. He has also presented guest lectures at numerous international institutions. He is currently serving as the secretary of the World Reformed Fellowship (African Region), deputy secretary of the Southern Africa Missiological Society, is a member of the board of directors of the association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) for Africa and is a founding member of the Centre for Reformational Urban Ministry in Africa (CRUMA). He has just completed his term

as Board Chair of International Association for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education. He is also a community builder of note who founded Theocentric Christian College in Venda and New Life Child Care Centre in Sunnyside (Tshwane). In his lecture, Mashau deals with the question of the future of the Christian mission in the public square.

It is his fi rm conviction that the future of Christian mission is in the city context, taking into consider-ation the vast urbanisation in the African context. In his view, African cities like Tshwane are not only exploding but also presenting the church with a new frontier for missionary work that needs to be crossed, without crossing geographical boundaries.

Prof Derrick Mashau and his wife Ignetia Mashau.

Tamani Tshiviela of Powerlines (right) and Ndivhuwo Mudau of Experience chase the ball.

Muhuyu XI Experience in next stage of Munyamela

Tamani Tshiviela of Powerlines leaves the pitch after seeing red.

Damani Powerlines will not take part in the next stage of the NJ Munyamela Soccer Challenge. They were boot-ed out 2-1 by Muhuyu XI Experience at the Muhuyu grounds on Saturday.

XI Experience deserved to win, but their strikers let them down by shooting aimlessly from close range. The keeper of Experience, Aifheli Sik-homo, was reprimanded with a card for handling the ball outside the penalty box in the 14th minute. Although no goal was scored during the first half, there were a lot of attempts by the strikers of Experience.

Experience continued with their dominance in the last half. Their opening goal came in the 54th minute. Ndivhuwo Nengovhela finished off a rebound with a header after Muano Nephawe’s long-range attempt.

Powerline effected the first change to their starting lineup in the 64th minute. They intro-

duced Livhuwani Ramagwede for Ndivhuwo Sieda as part of their many ways to match their opponents.

The replacement proved to be a clever move on the part of the Powerline technical sfaff. They found the equalizer three minutes after the replace-ment. Ndivhuwo Mudau of Experience was booked for a continued argument with the referee. Damani Powerline were reduced to 10 men after Tamani Tshiviela saw red for a late tackle on Robert Phalanndwa.

Powerlines then replaced Solly Mutangwa with Muan-danyi Netshidzivhani. That did not stop XI Experience from scoring the winner in the 78th minute. Mafhungo Nemavhola was on target with a header after a scramble within the box. A player of Powerline, Livhuwani Ramagwede, was also given his marching orders late in the game. He tackled Ipfi Ramaliba from behind.

Brothers commit suicide against Liverpool

Thakhani Tshivhase of United Brothers and Vhudzani Managa of Liverpool chase the ball.

Zwondina Matidze of Liverpool chases the ball.

Thenzheni Liverpool booked a place in the next stage of the NJ Munyamela Soccer Challenge by beating Tshid-zivhe United Brothers 2-0 at the Muhuyu XI Experience grounds on Sunday.

Liverpool were by far the better side throughout the game when it came to ball possession. United Brothers committed suicide by playing defensive football from the onset as if they were leading.

Liverpool had them-selves to blame for not scoring more than three goals within the first 45 minutes. They was ted numerous scoring opportuni-ties. Their right flank, Bethuel Nethenzheni, was the first player to cause an upset.

He hesitated for far too long to unleash within the box after receiving a neat pass from Vhudzani Mana-ga.

Shudufhadzo Mu-h a n e l w a h a d h i s chance as well in the 25th minute. His vol-ley hit the woodwork and bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick. Liverpool strengthened their midfield by intro-ducing Mutshidziwa Mmbengeni for Rabe-lani Nephawe. United Brothers came close to scoring in the 29th minute.

Ndamulelo Net-shidzhivhe miskicked the ball within the box, much to the dis-appointment of the team’s fans.

The second half saw Liverpool initiat-ing some dangerous moves from behind, but their strikers con-

tinued to fumble at the goal finish. Seeing that their scoring chances were slim, Liverpool introduced Lucky Ramulifho for Bethuel Nethenzheni in the 60th minute. The replacement marked the turning point of the game as Brothers started to chase the action soon after-wards.

Zwondina Matidze scored the opening goal for Liverpool with

a header, following a corner kick that was taken by Rofhiwa Neluvuvhu. Shudufhadzo Rat-shilumela of United Brothers was booked for obstruction on Vhudzani Managa in the 69th minute. Pfano “Adibayo” Ndid-zulafhi scored the second goal in the dying minutes of the game. He forced his way through the defence of Brothers and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

New colours for Tshakhuma na NdilaniTshakhuma na Ndilani FC will henceforth play in the proper attire when they compete in the MMK Funeral Services Soccer League.

The ceremony during which they were presented with a new soccer kit was held at Wolk-bergplase in Levubu last Friday evening.

During the ceremo-ny, the human resources manager at the farm, Mr Jannie Sounes, handed over a brand new soccer kit to the managing di-rector of the team, Mr David Thaba. Sounes stated that the donation was a realization of his company’s com-mitment to improving the lives of the people where they operate. He mentioned that they had spent thousands of rand in the form of donations to needy institutions and individuals every year.

Mr Thaba indicated that the donation had come at a time when it mattered most. He stated that it would be difficult for the team to survive without dona-tions or sponsorships.

He added that the team was formed in January this year. They affiliated to the Makhado LFA two weeks after the team was formed. They finished their league programme in the sixth spot.

Realizing that they had assem-bled a formidable squad during the past months, the manage-

ment of the team decided to buy the MMK Funeral Services League franchise from Tswinga Peace Makers.

According to Thaba, the team will be using the Levubu Laer-skool grounds as their home ground when the activities for the new season start in two months' time.

Anchors win Thabelo Funerals Challenge

Another harvest day for Tshaulu Powerlines

Vhutshilo Mafunisa of Anchors clears the ball.

Tshiozwi Anchors FC emerged as the champi-ons of the Thabelo Funerals Soccer Challenge, when they beat Gogobole Home Defenders 3-1

at Gogobole on Sunday. The victory did not reflect the game in general

as Defenders outsmarted their opponents from the onset. The home team was lucky not to concede half a dozen of goals during the first half as they were out of touch in all departments.

Defenders were the first to blow the trumpet. Tshimomo Mbambu forced his way through the defence of Anchors and blasted in a close-range rocket. The referee, Mr Tshifhiwa Sadiki, flashed the first yellow card in the 15th minute.Vhutshilo Mafunisa of Anchors tackled Tshishonga Tshishon-ga from behind and the referee was lenient enough not to give him his marching orders.

Anchors’ equalizer came in the 20th minute. Maanda Nengovhela tried his luck from outside the box with a left-foot ground cutter. As if he was a spectator, the keeper of Defenders, Mulalo Maphaha, watched as the ball bounced across the goal line.

The only change which Anchors made to their starting line up was when they introduced George Phungo and Khuli Ramudzwagi for Zane Mu-laudzi and Matodzi Maruli respectively. Velaphi Mphaphuli scored the second goal for Anchors in the 40th minute.

His long-range volley left the keeper stranded. Defenders then replaced Tshishonga Tshishonga with Mulalo Lethole.

Nyathi Muvhango of Anchors caused an upset by shooting wide from inside the penalty area. George Phungo of Anchors scored his team’s third goal, when he hooked the ball in after a scramble within the box.

BSA to investigate non-payment of boxers

The manager of Limpopo Boxing Champions Promotion, Phathutshedzo Dongola.

The chairperson of Boxing South Africa (BSA), Ms Ntambi Ravele, says they are reviewing the licenses of some boxing promoters who are not complying with the BSA regulations.

Ravele said this after a Limpopo promoter, Phathutshedzo Dongola of Limpopo Boxing Champions Promotions, failed to pay boxers who participated in a recent professional boxing tournament.

The tournament was held at the Thohoyandou Town Halle and was the first tournament orga-nized by Limpopo Boxing Champions Promotions since receiving a license from BSA.

Boxers who took part in the tournament have not yet received their payment, despite the BSA regulations that state that boxers must get their payment within seven days after the tournament. BSA is investigating the matter and, according to Ravele, they are in the process of tightening the rules for the application of a promoter’s license.

When approached for comment, Dongolo said he wanted to sue the BSA, because a newspaper report was going to jeopardise his case. He said he had been involved in a vehicle accident at Thathe last week.

Mr Mpho Khorommbi of the Mulenzhe Boxing Club and the trainer of Rose Phagambegwa, who participated in the tournament, said that he was not happy and was going to write a letter of complaint to the BSA to pay his boxer.

The coach of Tshaulu Powerlines, Mr Colbert Khomola, photographed with his team’s trophy, while Mrs Shandukani Nemakonde and Mr Eric Murudi look on.

The top goal scorer in the tournament, Ntshuxeko Simango, receives his trophy from Mrs Shandukani Nemakonde.

Tshaulu Powerlines Football Club received the biggest cheque during the prize-giving ceremony of the Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge, held at the Gaba Conference Centre.

Powerlines received R2 500, a soccer kit and a floating trophy during the cer-emony. The team will also receive their affiliation fee for the coming season.

Powerlines’ killer-striker, Ntshuxeko Simango, was nominated the best player in the tournament. He received a trophy for this achievement. He was also the top goal scorer with four goals during the tournament.

Dimani Young Masters, the run-ners-up in the tournament, received a soccer kit.

During the ceremony the sponsor, Mr Boy Nemakonde, indicated that he will continue to sponsor the tournament in the years to come. He emphasized that he was impressed with the way in

which this year’s tour-nament had been run. He pledged to increase the sponsorship over time.Vhamusanda Vho Bohwana appealed to the traditional leaders to make more land avail-able for the construc-tion of sports facilities. She further stated that raising a child was not a one-man effort, say-ing “it takes the whole village to raise a child”.

She also praised Mr Nemakonde for chan-neling a part of his in-come towards the de-velopment of football in the area.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Science Olympiad. The four top achievers in Grade 12 will be attending the 2014 London International Youth Science Forum, while the two top Grade 11 pupils have been selected to attend a Science Focus Week in Australia in January 2015. The two Grade 12s are Hamandishe Mathivha of Mbilwi Secondary School (left) and Danielle Vellema of Outeniqua High School in George in the Western Cape. Photo supplied.

Guests in their academic regalia and the hardworking pupils pose for a photo during the awards. The guests wore their academic gowns in order to motivate the pupils concerning what is possible and what they can also achieve.

The top 10 Grade 12 pupils of Thohoyandou Block F for 2013, who made their community proud by achieving high pass-es, were rewarded when the community gave them prizes in recognition of their good work.

This was during the Thohoy-andou Block Excellence Awards held at the Thohoyandou Tech-nical High School on Saturday. The event was attended by many current Grade 12 pupils in the area, academics, community structures and guests from out-side Thohoyandou.

Pupils were also guided in terms of career choices and admissions by a team from the University of Venda. Local aca-

demics paraded in their academic gowns as a way of motivating pupils to take their education seriously.

The top performing pupils received awards ranging from certificates and trophies to lap-top computers. There were also prizes for the best Tshivenda perfomer, sponsored by Univen's Prof Musehane.

The coordinator of the event, Dr Lufuno Kone, who heads the Educational Forum in Block F, said the community felt the need to motivate pupils to take their studies seriously. “We thought if we could dangle the carrot up there, pupils would be motivated and would develop a sense of

competiveness, thereby improv-ing their passes which, in the long run, would help in gaining admissions easily and also in getting scholarships."

Guest speaker Ms Angeline Mudau, a school principal, re-minded pupils of the obstacles they would come across in their academic career.“Many of us failed along the way, but we did not give up. For you to succeed, never give up until you achieve your dreams,” she said.

The overall top pupil, Mu-kovhe Muvhali (19), who is studying for a Bsc Civil Engi-neering at Wits, took home a laptop and many trophies.

“Higher education had a vital role to play in advancing the goals of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). South Africa committed itself to the MDGs, and through its institutions of higher learning, has taken up the challenge to meet the MDGs by 2015,” said the principal of Univen, Prof Peter Mbati (photo). Mbati officially opened a health conference at Univen a fortnight ago. Some of the topics the conference focused on was the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary, secondary and tertiary education and the promotion of gender equity.

The Vhembe Regional Football Association received a package of 400 soccer balls from their mother body, the South African Football Association (Safa), last Friday. The balls are part of the sponsorship to Safa by Chevrolet South Africa. The soccer balls were distributed to the four local football associations, with each LFA getting 100 balls. Photographed during the handing-over ceremony were, from left, Messrs EN Mulovhedzi (Mutale LFA), Mulalo Mafenya (Safa Vhembe administration officer), AA Tshisikule (Thulamela LFA), George Kubayi (President of Safa Vhembe), TJ Maphaha (Makhado LFA) and Theo Maoka (Musina LFA).

Madombidzha Masters ham-mered Mudimeli Masters 8-3 in a Matsedu Masters tournament match that was played at Ma-dombidzha on Sunday.

The visitors conceded a silly goal in the second minute. Son-dy Makhado capitalised on a clearing blunder by the sweeper of Mudimeli and hooked in the loose ball. The keeper of Mudi-meli missed the ball in the 25th minute, allowing Thina Mafhale-la to release a ground cutter from short range. Sondy Makhado scored his team's third goal in the 28th minute. He unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and beat the opponents' keeper easily.

After the goal, Mudimeli lost shape in the middle field and Madombidzha capitalized when their killer-striker, Cedrick Mat-shavha, scored his team's fourth goal after he finished off a square pass from Madumi Malema.

Khwathelani Mafukaduvha of Mudimeli forced his way through the defence of Masters and re-leased a rocket from outside the box to make the halftime score 4-1. Abel Matshavha increased the tally in the 55th minute; he scored after poor clearing by the

Money for Munyamela’s winning teamsThe final of the NJ Munyame-la Soccer Tournament will be played at the Muhuyu XI Ex-perience grounds on Sunday.

The quarterfinal matches will be staged at the same venue tomorrow, while the semis and the final will take place on Sunday. According to the chairman of the organising committee, Mr Thifhelimbilu Sie-da, this year’s cham-pions will receive R2 500.

The runners-up will receive R2 000, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will take home R1 500 and R1 000 respectively.

Teams that will be booted out in the quarterfinals will each receive R500.

The results of last weekend's matches are: Matangari Settlers 3, Tswingoni FC 1; Matangari Vultures 2, Matangari High Aims 0; Muhuyu XI Experience 2, Damani Powerlines 1; Marax-we Happy Boys 2, Makwarani Frelimo Boys 1; Tshiombo XI

Securitas 5, Maraxwe Happy Boys 4; Thenzheni Liverpool 2, Tshidzivhe United Brothers 0; Tshipako Hotspurs 4, Vhutalu Mountain Rangers 5 and Matan-gari Rising Stars 1, Muhuyu Copper Stars 1.

When the Makhado Munici-pality recently renovated Rabali Stadium, the sporting fraternity welcomed the initiative as they thought it would help them im-mensely. Some of the teams and associations are now complain-ing, however, that the fees to use the stadium make it impossible to stage local matches.

The municipality has allegedly increased the fees for using the stadium to such an extent that they are out of reach of local teams, especially those operating under the aegis of Safa Vhem-be. This follows not long after the stadium was renovated at a cost of roughly R7 million. The money was made available via a grant received from the National Lotteries Board.

Safa Vhembe was supposed to use the stadium during the MMK Insurance Brokers promotional play-off matches, but the matches had to be moved to Makwarela Stadium. This meant that the teams had to travel more than 100 kilometres to play their matches

in another municipality. The chairperson of the compe-

tition committee for Safa Vhem-be, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, said that he was very disappointed to hear what the fees were when they applied to use the Rabali stadium. According to him, the Makhado Municipality charged them R12 000 to use the stadium during the promotional play-offs. “We thought such facilities would play the role of taking children away from the streets and taking them to the sporting fields, but with such high rates, this is difficult to achieve,” he said.

Madombidzha Western Stars MD Mr Mashudu Mulaudzi also expressed his disappointment. “This arrogance and disrespect that is being displayed by the political leaders of Makhado Municipality is not helping the community,” he said.

“The municipality is ignoring us and our pleas,” he added. “Now we want the municipality to tell us if it is nation building

if we are forced to play games outside the municipality while we live in Makhado,” Mulaudzi added.

M a k h a d o M u n i c i p a l i t y spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi denied that the municipality had charged Safa Vhembe R12 000 to use the stadium.

He said that the municipality supplied Safa Vhembe with two quotations, namely R2 085,90 if used by amateur teams and R8 000 if used by professional teams. Of these amounts, R1 585,90 is refundable (amateur teams) or R5 000 is refundable if professional teams play at the stadium. Bobodi said the municipality and Safa Vhembe must meet as soon as possible to resolve the problems.

Mr Ronald Makhadi, manager of sport at Thulamela Municipal-ity, said the federation paid a fee of R460 per year. He said that as the municipality they allowed the federation to utilise the stadium the whole year without paying any other amount.

Grade 12 learners from deep rural schools in the Vhembe region recently participated in the Apply on Time Campaign from Univen. The campaign equips rural schools with information on different courses offered by the university. Univen has so far visited rural schools such Mamphodo, Tshirenzheni and Gunda, informing the pupils about the closing date for applying to study and different courses offered at the university. In our photo are some of the pupils from Mamphodo Secondary outside Mutale, photographed with the motivational speakers after the event. Photo: Silas Nduvheni.

Maraxwe Happy Boys too good for Frelimo BoysMaraxwe Happy Boys beat Mak-warani Frelimo Boys 2-1 in their NJ Munyamela Soccer Challenge match at the Muhuyu XI Experience grounds on Saturday.

Frelimo Boys did not take the game for granted although they knew that they would still qualify to play in the quarterfinals of the competition, even if they lost the match.

The first 10 minutes of the game saw Fre-limo Boys enjoy more ball possession, with the defence of Happy Boys playing with their backs against the wall. Happy Boys gained mo-mentum as the first half approached the halfway mark. At that stage, Fre-limo Boys were playing defensive football.

Happy Boys scored their opening goal in the 29th minute. They were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box after Rodger Kwinda was brought down by Takalani Rasikhinya. Talifhani Mudalahothe was on target with a fine header to bring the half-time score to 1-0.

Frelimo Boys came back strongly in the last half. Their efforts did not pass without a re-ward as they soon found

the equalizer.Rinae Nenzhelele gave the ball the final touch after a square pass from Shumani Ratshilumela.

Fhumulani Mmbadi of Frelimo Boys was booked for a late tackle on Rumani Tshivhandekano in the 59th minute.

Frelimo Boys lost their original shape in

the middle of the park. Happy Boys took advantage and scored the winner through Thabelo Netshitongwe in the 75th minute. Godfrey Munyamela of Frelimo Boys was given his marching orders for dangerous play eight minutes before the final whistle was blown.
