The grief-stricken Ramanyimi family of Tshilungoma, who recently lost a child at the hands of alleged ritual killers, received a generous donation when concerned members of the community donated some cash to the family.

Thohoyandou-based business-man Mr Sheth Babu, who repre-sented the Venda Muslim Jamaat, a non-profit welfare organization composed of Indian business people, Dean Alunamutwe Ran-nditsheni, leader of the Lutheran Church in the Devhula Lebowa Circuit, and Mr Bardwell Mufun-waini of Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum donated R1 600.

The trio was accompanied by the local traditional leader, Chief Thikhathali Mphaphuli, and lead-ers of the local civic structure.

Dean Rannditsheni, who has

been very vocal about ritual murders since 2006, spoke on behalf of the visitors. “We have heard of the bad that befell the family and felt that we should lead by example, to come and be with you in this time of your grief. Please know that what you are going through is not for you only; the whole country is in pain. God is still with you and we will be with you till you bury your loved one,” he said.

The local traditional leader, Chief Thikhathali Mphaphuli, also pledged his full support to the family. “We are going to help the family and they will not pay for any service. We are also go-ing to give the communal tent,” he said.

Mr Leonard Ramanyimi, the deceased’s father, said he was still shocked and confused. “The

death of my first-born child shocked and saddened us as a family. We felt isolated, not knowing what to do, but the local community has been very supportive.”

Little Mutshidzi Ramanyimi (9) went missing at the beginning of the month, only to be found killed on Friday. The alleged murder of the child sparked wide-spread protests in the community, with members of the community demanding that those suspected of having a hand in the child’s murder be evicted and arrested.

On Sunday, the local police had their hands full when angry community members marched to possible suspects’ homes and demanded that the suspects be arrested or the community would take the law into their own hands.

Joy and laughter ended in heartbreak when Ka-belo Nonyane (15), who was playing at a stream with friends at Madadzhi village in Muwaweni, drowned last Tuesday.

The boy and his friends went to swim in the stream as it was extremely hot. Kabelo, however, vanished into the water.

A friend then ran to the inform his parents and other community members. They called the police, but when they arrived at the scene, it was already dark and the boy was nowhere to be found.

Community members and the family slept at the stream until the police divers arrived the following day (Wednesday).

Dean Alunamutwe Rannditsheni, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, and Mr Seth Babu expressed their condolences at the dead girl’s home. They handed over money and promised to assist the family in burying the little girl. Also pictured are the local leadership and the girl’s father, Leornard Ramanyimi (fourth from right).

Young Kabelo Nonyane.

When they arrived at the scene, they could do little more than to retrieve the body.

A cousin of young Kabelo, Mr Samuel Samphen-yana, said they had a sleepless night, not knowing where the body of the boy could be found. “We needed the body, so that we could give him a decent burial,” he said.

Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said that the police had opened an in-quest docket.

He also appealed to parents to take care of their children and teach them to avoid playing in rivers and streams.

Kabelo, a Grade 8 pupil at Mainganye Second-ary School, was buried at the Madadzhi cemetery on Saturday.

Nine months pregnant - a protestor says ritual killers do not know the pain they go through at childbirth. “If they knew what we go through, they would not kill our children.”

Arrested for rapeA 51-year-old Musina resident was arrested after he had allegedly raped his 12-year-old daughter at Matswale, on 2 March.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, the victim’s mother had initially left for a piece job with the daughter in the morning, but later asked her to go to buy a bag of mealie meal and take it home. When the daughter got home, she found her father, who then allegedly raped her in his bedroom.

The mother came back and apparently caught the man red-handed while raping the girl. She then alerted the police about the incident.

The suspect had since appeared in court on Monday and the case was postponed.

(From page 1)The dead girl’s uncle, Pfuluwani Ramanyimi,

said he went to the scene where the body was found.

“This is pure ritual murder. The little girl did not have lips, eyes and some flesh was sliced from her hands. She did not have private parts and her intestines were missing,” he said.

“We are just putting everything in the hands of God and hope and pray that the police will do their job and apprehend the killers and make them answer for their ghastly deeds.”

The grisly find, after the intensive search by the community, sent shockwaves throughout Limpopo, more especially Vhembe, which is known for ritual murders. Vhembe experienced a spate of ritual murders in the year 2006, with Nyelisani Sidimela and Maanda Sendedza being one of the most prominent cases.

Sidimela had her lips sliced off by the knives of ritual murderers but was lucky to survive.

Her boyfriend, Maanda Sendedza, was killed by the same people who attempted to kill his girlfriend.

“We can now confirm that the nine-year-old girl who had been missing for almost a week was found murdered at a nearby rivulet,” said Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo.

“We have opened a murder docket and our investigations are continuing.”

Malelo said they were awaiting the post mortem results which would shed light on what could have happened before the child died.

“We are appealing for calm; let all the people out there be patient and give the police a chance to investigate the case without hindrance. Let all those who have information make it available, so that we can use it in our investigations,” he said.

No one has been arrested so far.

Madombidzha resident (36) brutally stoned to death

A large number of people assem-bled on Saturday at Ngovhela to bid farewell to former ANC political activist Mr Ndivhuwo Nthangeni (43).

He was a former spokesperson for the Department of Health and passed away on 2 March in a Pretoria hospital after a short illness.

The quiet village of Madombidzha is still reeling with shock, after a Zimbabwean man had allegedly stoned a 36-year-old man and run away last Saturday night.

Residents came from all corners of the village to see a dead man lying in a pool of blood at Rathidili-fhasi-ha-bada.

The deceased was identified as a

After matriculating in 1995 at Raluswielo Secondary, Nthangeni went on to study Civil Engineering at Mavhoi Technical College. He held several leadership positions, among others that of the chairperson of the Thavhadziawa branch of the ANC be-tween 2006 and 2011.

He worked as community devel-opment worker in the Department of Health and Social Development and later joined the communication services section in Vhembe as com-munication officer until his death.

He is survived by his daughter, Rif-hemaanda (12) , sisters and mother, Vho-Selinah.

well-known pot maker, Mr Tixaniso Thomas Manganyi, who originally came from Mozambique. The incident happened at about 18:00, when the suspect, who is still at large, was al-legedly seen while hitting Manganyi on the head from behind with some bricks or stones.

“That man is heartless; he has no soul in his body,” said an elderly lady who came over and covered the deceased with a cloth.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku po-lice, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, confirmed that the police had opened a case of murder, follow-ing the incident. A com-munity leader attached to the Sinthumule Tra-ditional Council, Mr Alfios Mudzwari, con-demned the brutal kill-ing of the man.

Manganyi’s employ-ees, Ms Flora Tshiovhe and Mr Rooiba Tshiv-

henga, expressed their sadness and described the deceased as a hard-working man who loved all people. “Nobody will ever replace Thomas,” said Tshivhenga. “His death has saddened us and robbed us of a hard worker who didn’t deserve to die such a brutal death.”

Manganyi is survived by his wife, Chrissie Mabena, and three chil-dren.

The deceased is being lifted into the forensic pathology vehicle.

Life came to a standstill at Phadzima on Saturday as scores of members of the Holi-ness Church of Christ, family, friends and community mem-bers gathered to pay their last tribute to one of the longest-serving reli-gious leaders, Bishop Alpheus Ravhugoni (68).

Ravhugoni died on 28 February after a long illness.

During the funeral ceremony, Ravhugoni was described as a pio-neer, a born leader and a man of vision. Arch-bishop Andries Ma-khitha said the whole community gathered “with heavy hearts,” be-

cause the bishop was very influ-ential in the area. Makhitha said the family and church members were in great pain after losing one of their beloved members.

The deceased’s son, Mr James

Ravhugoni, said that his father was a very solemn, restrained and dignified person.

Area for Nancefield residents to relax New computer centre for Musina area

Deputy Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams shows students how to use the Internet to search for information.

The Deputy Minister of Com-munications, Ms Stella Ndabe-ni–Abrahams, has urged pu-pils from Musina High School to take education seriously by joining the digital world.

“We are presenting an ICT Computer Centre for the school, which will go a long way in assisting Grade 12 pupils to improve their results. We took education as an apex priority and computers will help bridge the digital divide,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams.

The event took place at the Lesley Manyat-hele Stadium a fort-night ago. Ndabeni-Abrahams also took part in launching the Musina Community Radio Station during the event.

Ndabeni-Abrahams said the R150 000 cen-tre was equipped with 20 computers, con-nected to the Internet and was donated by the

Department of Communications and IT Master in Polokwane. “Our government is commit-ted to ensuring that even rural communities and students have access to the digital world,” she added. According to her, mem-bers of the Musina community will be allowed to use the com-puter centre with the approval of the school principal.

One of the teachers of Musina High School, Ms Wilson Phoke-di, said that it was difficult for pupils to search for information on the Internet as the school was not connected to the digital world. “Most of the parents of our pupils here in Musina are not working and they cannot afford to pay for information searches at an Internet café."

Following various public par-ticipation meetings coordinat-ed by the Musina Municipality, local people have identified projects that should be imple-mented to improve the stand-ard of life in their areas.

One of the projects that have been kickstarted is the construc-tion of a public park at Musina Nancefield extension 5. The park consists of a fence, ablution, play and relaxation facilities. The total project value of the whole initiative is R1,4 million and the

anticipated completion date is the end of May this year.

Municipal spokesperson Wil-son Dzebu says the municipality implements projects based on the needs of the local people. He says local people have been requesting the municipality to provide them with recreational facilities for some time. “We are very happy because we have finally delivered what our people wanted.”

He says parks are a tangible reflection of the quality of life in any community. “They provide

identity for citizens and are a ma-jor factor in the perception about that quality of life. This park will provide a gathering place for families and social groups, as well as for individuals of all ages and economic status. Parks and recreation programmes provide places for health and well-being that are accessible to persons in our municipality.”

He says the municipality strongly links access to parks-and-recreation opportunities to reductions in crime and juvenile

delinquency. “Young people will have a place to play, and chances to involve themselves in criminal activities are limited.”

He adds that the con-struction of the park will also assist in keeping the environment clean. “In fact, conserving land for people where they live, work and play is often the most cost-efficient and effective way to achieve a host of envi-ronmental health and related public-policy objectives.”

T h e 1 6 - y e a r - o l d Hulisani Rambuda says that there are limited recreational facilities in Musina. "Our lives will change as we will have somewhere to hang around after studying our school books.”

Multi-talented artist Florah Chauke is designing her own label of clothing and decorates them with her own style. She is also a popular Xitsonga singer and wife of mega-star Thomas Chauke. She started her own Xitsonga traditional outfit range, called Yele and Cheka. She also creates traditional Tsonga doilies, necklaces, beaded shoes and mugs. Chauke said her parents taught her that hard work was the secret to succeeding and living a better life.

Takalani Ndou of Musina Nancefield Extension 8 is an unemployed single mother of three who survives by doing piece jobs. It has always been a heavy burden for her to access government services because she does not have money to take a taxi to town.

Ndou’s agony, which she shares with a lot of people in her neighbourhood, will soon be a thing of the past, because the Musina Municipality has started with the construction of the R1,2 million Thusong Service Centre in their area. When the centre has been completed at the end of June this year, local people will be able to access municipal and government services on their doorstep.

The Thusong Service Centre programme of government was initi-ated in 1999 as one of the primary vehicles for the implementation of development com-munication and infor-mation, and to integrate government services into primarily indigent communities. This was done to address histori-cal, social and economic factors of limited access

to information, services and participation because citizens had to travel long dis-tances to access these services.

Musina Mayor Carol Phiri says: “This Thusong Service Centre is a one-stop, integrated community development centre, with community participation and services relevant to their needs. It will empower the poor and the disadvantaged through access to information, services and resources from government, non-governmental organisations, parastatals and business - enabling them to engage in government programmes for the improve-

ment of their lives. The government’s vision for Thusong Service Centres is to provide every South African citizen with access to information and services within their place of residence, with the purpose of improving the quality of their lives through integrated service delivery.”

Ndou was jubilant about this develop-ment. “We are very happy to have this centre around us because this will make our life easier. We thank everyone who played a role in the establishment of this centre. Words alone cannot express our gratitude.”

Four suspected copper thieves in court

New multipurpose service centre for Nancefield

Four Beit Bridge men appeared in court on Friday for allegedly vandalising the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) power line, before stealing 340kg of copper cables.

The cables are valued at R337 500, and the men allegedly intended to smuggle them into South Africa.

Lawrence Sibanda (28), Panganai Dube (28), Smart Dube (28) and Tendai Dube (27), all from the Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, were not asked to plead to charges of contravening a section of the electricity act (vandalism, theft and disrup-tion of power transmission) when they appeared before Magistrate Gloria Takundwa. Their bail application was opposed and they are still in cus-

tody. In denying them bail, the court noted that, given the gravity of the offence and likely sentence if they were convicted, there was no guarantee that the quar-tet would not abscond to

South Africa. The magistrate also said that, if given bail, there was a likelihood that the accused would interfere with the ongoing investigation.

The prosecutor, Mr Forster Abeki, said that on 23 February, the accused connived with John Moyo and another accomplice, only identified as Anderson, who are still at large. Soon after hatching a plan to steal copper cables belonging to Zesa, the accused drove to the Bubi area in a Nissan truck. On arrival, Smart and Tendai alighted from the vehicle and pounced on the power line - the 11 kilovolt feeder - and cut four poles, resulting in a blackout in the area.

Local villagers became suspicious and reported the matter to ZESA officials, who in turn teamed up with the police and immediately attended the scene. They found the four accused persons at the scene, leading to their arrest. Further investigation led to the recovery of 340kg of copper wire that had been pulled off the power line and rolled into bundles. A bolt cutter and a saw, which were used in cutting the cables and poles, were also found at the scene.

The case was postponed to 19 March.

Slow start in rhino case

Tshidino Ndou talks to rapists

The trial of the five men accused of illegally hunting rhinos in the Alldays area is yet to begin.

The five, January Machava (37), Juda Nyembe (38), Matthew Pedro Ngwenya (42), Thomas Sibanda (33) and Humbulani Reason Matutu (29), appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Tuesday.

They are charged with three counts of the hunting of specially protected wild animals and two counts of pick-ing up or removing dead wild animals. The charges were brought against them when they allegedly killed two rhinos and attempted to kill a third and hack off its horns. The case against

Matutu was withdrawn by the State earlier this year when he decided to become a state witness. After his decision, the trail was set to start in February, but had to be postponed because Machava failed to appear in court.

Machava did appear in court on Tuesday with his co-accused. Their case, however, was postponed once more because their legal counsel was not fully prepared.

Machava, Nyembe and Ngwenya are out on bail, while Sibanda remains in custody.

Their case was postponed until 8 April.

Angered by the rape and murder of young and old women, well-known local musician and film producer Tshidino Ndou deci-

ded to talk to rapists through music. He released a single track, Ho tshinyalani naa?

last week. The Tshakhuma-born singer and Tshivenda

music awards nominee said women seemed to be silent about the high rate of rapes and killings tak-ing place in the country and therefore he decided to talk on their behalf. “The rate of murders of women in South Africa is equally troubling and something is going terribly wrong,” Tshidino said.

The fact that South Africa is often rated as the rape capital of the world, indicates that men do not respect young girls and women, he added.

“My blood boils every time I think of men raping and dumping little girls. A woman is killed by an intimate partner every minute. Many are raped in their homes by a relative or family friend; many are raped at school, often by teachers; many are raped by trusted pastors in the church or by someone they do not know,” Tshidino added.

People finding it difficult to get hold of Tshidi-no’s single can phone him at 073 6120 155.

New school health programmeIn an attempt to minimize sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/Aids among school children, the Department of Health and Social Development launched the Integrated School Health Programme during a ceremony held at the Tshiungulela High School in Kutama village last Friday.

The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said the aim of the programme was to prevent unnecessary illness and to promote good health among the learners. “Statistics show that Limpopo remains the seventh on the list in terms of HIV and AIDS prevalence, with 21,9%.”

According to Mutavhatsindi, STIs are accompanied by teenage pregnancies and HIV/Aids, and those who abuse drugs and alcohol are the most vulnerable.

Twenty-five professional nurses have been trained in the Vhembe District for the programme as a pilot project, and other districts will do the same in the next financial year. Khosi Vho-Prince Kutama applauded the initiative by the government to teach learners about the danger of HIV/Aids and STIs. He advised young people around the Kutama area to concentrate on their school work rather than going up and down the streets or going to shebeens.

Joint services in week before Easter

Masia a good model of rural success

Various churches will cooperate to hold joint services in the week leading up to Easter.

On 24 March, Palm Sunday, the joint service will be hosted at the AFM Charisma in 70 Mun-

The multi-million-rand project between the Department of Rural Development and Masia Community is a good model of a very successful rural story that needs to be copied by other communities.

This was said by Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe during his visit to the Masia Traditional Council last week. Matibe’s visit was part of his mission to visit all senior traditional leaders in Vhembe to investigate the chal-lenges facing the communities. During his visit, Matibe also expressed his appreciation for the good working relationship between the traditional council of Ha-Masia under the leadership of Thovhele Vho-Mmbangiseni Masia and his communities, that led to the construction of a library, a hall, theatre, computer

centre, cultural village and sport-ing facilities.

Since the project started, more than 1 000 people have been employed and more will benefi t when the project is complete.

Matibe said he was grateful to see a traditional leader who was more than willing to see the de-velopment of his community like what was happening at Ha-Masia. “I hope other traditional leaders will learn from this project. This development will create jobs, reduce poverty and crime. I am proud of you, Thovhele Masia, and your people. Keep it up,” said Matibe.

Masia said he was happy to hear that they were on the right track. He said the project started after he approached the Minister during the celebration of Masia Day some years back.

Matibe was also confronted with other challenges facing the community, such as a lack of clinics, the high crime rate, poor road conditions, the shortage of schools, a lack of shelter for pensioners and the water short-age. The community members said that they did not have their own satellite police station be-cause of the demarcation which was created by the apartheid government.

Matibe said the issue of dam-aged roads would be addressed by the national government. He said boreholes would be provided as a temporary solution to the wa-ter challenge facing the commu-nity but the Nandoni Dam would provide a long-term solution. He said there must be an awareness campaign against the high crime rate in the area.

On Thursday (28th) the service will be at the NG Kerk Louis Trichardt in 23 Erasmus Street and this service will be a communion service.

Services will commence at 18:30 and every evening a voluntary collection will be taken up, of which 50% will go to the hosting church and 50% to the Berg Care for the Aged. This is a non-government organisation that does not receive any monies from the state.

Beit Bridge schools damaged by stormsPupils and teachers at Ma-likuwa Secondary and Whun-ga Primary schools outside Beit Bridge were left scurry-ing for cover after the roofs of their classroom blocks were blown off by strong winds that recently swept across the entire village.

The local ward councillor, Mrs Gladys Tlou, said the incident occurred last Friday at around 17:00 at Whunga village and surrounding ar-eas. “This is really shocking and we are now appealing to NGOs, businesspeople and the government to chip in with the required assistance to rebuild the two schools, whose roofs were completely blown off and reduced to pieces,” she said.

The downpour, which was preceded by strong winds and a hailstorm, also left some vil-lagers homeless after their huts were damaged extensively. When Limpopo Mirror visited the area, scattered fragments of roof sheeting could be seen strewn all over the school yard of Malikuwa Secondary, which has been affected worst in the village.

Mrs Shylin Sebata-Tlou,

the principal of Malikuwa Secondary School, said three computers and two printers were damaged after they were submerged in water. “I was at the teachers’ cottage when the storm started and I rushed to the administration block. It was already raining heavily and teachers and pupils were fl eeing in different directions as the roof sheets were being blown off,” she said.

Sebata-Tlou said two class-room blocks, a computer labo-ratory and the administration block were the most affected buildings. “Right now, pupils are attending lessons as com-bined classes crammed in the two remaining classrooms that were not affected. This is not a conducive environment for learning, especially with the prevailing high temperatures,” she said. The rain had also soaked several textbooks.

A local villager, Aleck Ngu-luvhe, said the roof of his eight-roomed house had been blown off and the window panes shat-tered after they had been struck by lightning.

The principal of Whunga Primary School, Mr Lovemore

Dube, said: “We only have one classroom block which was affected and 48 window panes were damaged by the strong winds. Most of the text-books, which were donated by UNICEF, were also soaked and we are appealing for as-sistance.”

The chairperson of the local civil protection committee, Mr Simon Muleya, said his team and various stakeholders had since visited the area to assess the situation. He said they were in the process of mobilising resources with the assistance of partners to repair the damage.

Last year, nurses and patients at the Tshikwalakwala clinic outside Beit Bridge were also left scurrying for cover when the roof sheets of the health centre were blown off by strong winds that had swept across the entire area. Scores of homes were also destroyed by the uncharacteristically heavy rains that recently pounded parts of the district.

Meanwhile, a German-based NGO handed over part of the two-roomed houses that it had pledged to construct for fl ood victims in Tshikwalakwala.

Mrs Shylin Sebata-Tlou, the principal of Malikuwa Secondary School, photo graphed with the damaged roofi ng sheets.

“Report all corruption” - mayor Matibe

Unhappy sex workers hand memo to police

Community members must report all corrup-tion-related activities happening in Vhembe, said the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Mat-ibe, during his recent address to the community at Thengwe Tribal Council.

Matibe was reacting to the allegations made by a community member that there was nepotism at play in the allocation of jobs in Mutale.

Another community member also added that some councillors went as far as telling them that “you can go wherever you want, we will see if you will get water.”

This, the person stated, happened after they tried to engage a councillor, so that they could get water in their area.

Some also said they had never seen their council-lors since the last local government elections.

Matibe said it was totally wrong for a council-lor or any government offi cial to use corruption or nepotism in the allocation of jobs. He said job opportunities were made available for all citizens of Vhembe.

“As a local or district municipality, we do not discriminate against people when allocating jobs. If there is anyone who is practicing nepotism in the allocation of jobs, report such a person to our anti-fraud and corruption hotline number 080 066 8538 or fax number 080 020 0796,” said Matibe.

Matibe said all corrupt people were criminals, irrespective of who they were. “Whether it is me or any other senior offi cial in this district, these people must be reported and go to jail if found guilty. Do not be afraid to use these numbers to report corruption as you do not need to identify yourself,” said Matibe.

“If a councillor refuses to work with you, report him or her to their mayors. All councillors, includ-ing me, are forced by law to come and consult with

The sex workers who ply their trade at an infamous spot known as Dzithangani handed a memorandum of grievances to the Makhado police station on Friday afternoon.

When Limpopo Mirror’s re-porter tried to speak with the con-cerned sex workers on Monday and Tuesday to fi nd out exactly what was in the memorandum, some of them did not want to disclose the contents of the document.

Some, however, agreed to speak with the newspaper, on condition of anonymity.

“Don’t try to turn our revolu-tion into a joke,” one sex worker said at Dzithangani on Monday. “Go away! Go and write what-

ever you want.”Another group of sex workers,

however, indicated that they had decided to hand in a memoran-dum after excessive abuse from the side of the police, “who always come to harass us when we are busy doing our business at Dzithangani. They just arrest us and give us a R1 500 fi ne,” they said. “That’s not the kind of treat-ment we want. If they feel that selling sex is a crime, they must charge us for selling sex. We want freedom to sell sex without any disturbance from anybody, including the police.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki, confi rmed that they had received a memorandum and that

it would soon be forwarded to the offi ce of the provincial commis-sioner for consideration. “They are expressing their unhappiness on certain issues and we will respond appropriately by next week, when our seniors have fi nished considering the case,” Sadiki. He did not elaborate on what the “certain issues” were at that stage.

In one of our previous reports on Dzithangani, the women who agreed to speak to us were ada-mant that the “no-prostitution” operation by the SAPS would never stop them from conduct-ing business in town (Limpopo Mirror, 24 August 2012). “You can’t sell sex in the village,” they said.

you, the community, for the sake of development in the community,” said Matibe.

Matibe said councillors who refused to work with the community were acting against their mandate and they tarnished the name of their government. “Don’t wait until it is too late before you report lazy councillors,” said Matibe.

Twelve students from Ridgeway College registered for the Arts Awards with the British Council last year. For the bronze award, these students were expected to participate in a Shakespeare play, be an audience at a Shakespeare play, interview their favourite hero or heroine in connection with Shakespeare and introduce Shakespeare to others through workshops. All of their efforts needed to be recorded in a portfolio which was then submitted to the British Council for adjudication. At an awards ceremony held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on 22 February, students from both Ridgeway College and Dendron High received their bronze certifi cates from representatives of the British Council and ShakeXperience, who co-ordinated the project in South Africa. The students in our photo are Safi yya Karim, Muno Gwata, Lally Netshikweta, Rendani Nemutandani, Anneke Smit, Mutondi Rankhododo, Mualusi Ravele, Shadrack Khorombi and Jordan McLeod. Green energy

Is it a plane, is it a motorcycle? No, it’s Toyota’s latest answer to congested roadsToyota’s new i-ROAD personal mobility vehicle (PMV) makes its world debut at the Geneva motor show, a new, flexible form of transport designed for city streets.

Seating two in tandem and under cover, i-ROAD is an elec-tric vehicle with a range of up to 50km on a single charge. Using ‘Active Lean’ technology, it is safe, intuitive and enjoyable to drive, with no need for driver or passenger to wear a helmet.

It’s the latest concept to emerge from Toyota’s 40 years of research and development into vehicles that use less energy, place less of a burden on the environment and are practical in meeting people’s everyday transport needs. i-ROAD takes the company closer to its goal of creating the ultimate range of eco cars.

Toyota is paving the way for several types of eco car to co-exist in the future, by adapting its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology for use in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), electric vehi-cles (EVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). While hybrids, plug-in hybrids and FCVs are ideal for mainstream use over medium to long distances, Toyota believes in the feasibility of EVs to serve

as a main mode of transport for short urban journeys, and has 10 years’ experience in the research and development of PMVs.

People using this kind of ve-hicle want something that is more comfortable, offers better weather protection and is safer than a two-wheeler such as a scooter or motorcycle, but has similar benefi ts of low running costs, easy parking and around-town manoeuvrability.

The ultra-compact, three-wheel i-ROAD measures 2 350mm long and 1 445mm high and has a 1 700mm wheelbase. Its most signifi cant dimension, though, is its width: at only 850mm, it is no wider than a conventional two-wheeler. Not only does this make for easy manoeuvring through congested traffi c, it also means four can be parked in a single parking bay.

The zero-emissions, all-elec-tric powertrain uses a lithium-ion battery to power two 2kW motors mounted on the front wheels, giving brisk acceleration and near-silent running.

Driving range is around 50 kilometres, after which the bat-tery can be fully recharged from a conventional domestic power supply in three hours.

Toyota’s new and entirely

intuitive Active Lean technol-ogy is the key to i-ROAD’s high levels of stability, safety, comfort and fun-to-drive character. The system uses a lean actuator and gearing mounted above the front suspension member, linked via a yoke to the left and right front wheels. An ECU calcu-lates the required degree of lean, based on steering angle, gyro-sensor and vehicle speed information, with the system automati-cally moving the wheels up and down in opposite directions, applying lean angle to counteract the centrifugal force of cor-nering.

No special skills are needed to pilot i-ROAD; the Active Lean system of-fers a unique driving expe-rience with the enjoyment of riding a two-wheeler, but with no need for the driver to stabilise the ve-hicle when manoeuvring at low speed, or when stationary. As the driver doesn’t have to put his or her feet on the road sur-face at any time, i-ROAD can be fi tted with a safer, weatherproof, closed body and so can be driven without

wearing a helmet. This design also allows for

a more car-like environment on board, with the potential for features such as lighting, heat-ing, audio and Bluetooth to be provided.

Toyota envisages its i-ROAD

concept has the potential to play a significant role in reducing urban traffi c congestion and air pollution.

Its compact size, manoeu-vrability, easy parking, rapid charging and choice of an open or closed cabin make it an ideal

urban vehicle, designed to reduce congestion and CO2, NOx and particulate emissions without compromising individual free-dom of mobility. (Issued by Toyota South Africa Motors (Pty) Ltd).

Road Safety

Drunk driving shows lack of respect - DJ S’buRoad Safety

More pedestrians are killedThe number of incidents that paramedics are called out to involving pedestrians that are knocked down by vehicles seems to be on the increase.

According to ER24, in 2013 alone there have been 728 inci-dents, many of them fatal, whereas in 2012, in the same time frame, 598 such incidents were reported.

From 1 March until the morning of 11 March, 146 incidents were attended to. That amounts to 14 pedestrians knocked down per day in March alone.

No trend in terms of area or specifi c roads is apparent for where these incidents are taking place. “It is just utterly clear that more peo-ple are forced to walk to and from their destinations and the roads are becoming an increasingly danger-ous place to spend your time,” says ER24 in a press release. According to them, education needs to start at a young age, and should a parent or guardian not be in the position to teach a child about the rules of the road, a teacher should take on the responsibility.

There are a number of points that can be discussed when it comes to how pedestrians can protect themselves while walk-ing along the road, but in order to make it as easy as possible to remember, three important points

can be highlighted:* Do not take a chance - be safe

and wait;* Walk a safe distance from the

tar; and* Use pedestrian crossings and

overhead walkways.“In many of our articles, we

have gathered information about how the pedestrian accident had occurred, and all too frequently there is a witness that states that the pedestrian ‘ran across the road’ when they were knocked down,” states ER24.

They continue: “Unfortunately, because of the number of pedes-trians needing to cross busy roads and highways as their daily access to get to work, we need to think of a solution rather than simply curse the problem. Motorists need to slow down in areas that are frequented by pedestrians and keep their eyes on the road. It is easier to take evasive action if a hazard is expected, rather than to try and avoid it as suddenly as it occurrs”.

It is of utmost importance for a person trying to cross the road to look right, left and right again, but before crossing, look again.

“If you’re not sure about how far away a car is to where you are trying to cross, wait. A few more minutes of waiting may prevent injury or death!” states ER24.

South Africa’s leading total beverage company, brandhouse, launched a hard-hitting social media activism campaign last week, a fi rst for the indus-try, designed to change be-haviour amongst the South African youth with regard to drinking and driving.

The social-media cam-paign is the 2013 edition of brandhouse’s award-winning media initiative against drinking and driving, Drive Dry. The campaign is expected to gain momentum in social media circles well ahead of the Easter weekend – a high-risk period for road accidents.

At the heart of this year’s campaign is a somewhat shocking Facebook applica-tion, called The Drive. The Drive brings to life the harsh realities of drunk driving in an impactful way, and en-courages South Africans to make a public commitment never to drink and drive. It also encourages young people to select a designated driver before going out to socialise and make such a decision an active part of

their social culture. The fi rst person to make

the public Drive Dry pledge was South African kwaito artist and entertainment per-sonality DJ S’bu (Sibusiso Leope). “No doubt, party-ing is part of youth culture. However, despite being il-legal, and having potentially dire consequences, drunk driving also demonstrates a complete lack of respect for fellow citizens,” said DJ S’bu.

“brandhouse remains committed to addressing the role that alcohol plays when it comes to drinking and driving. We acknowledge the need for intervention programmes and initiatives to address the issue. Drive Dry is one of the initiatives we have in place to promote the responsible use of alco-hol,” says Michael Mabasa, corporate relations director for brandhouse.

Though aimed at the youth, the 2013 Drive Dry campaign calls on all South Africans to make a public pledge to drink responsibly, and on Facebook, make the public pledge to “drink and not drive” or “drive and not

drink”.Similar to past Drive Dry

campaigns such as “ Pappa wag vir jou” that made use of strong emotional imagery to raise awareness of drunk driving in an impactful way, the 2013 campaign makes use of shock tactics - The Drive is designed to take consumers through a fi ctional social scenario with a shocking and unexpected outcome.

“We want people to experience The Drive for themselves, which contextu-alises drinking responsibly and aims to change the per-ception of ‘it won’t happen

to me’ to ‘it can happen to me’,” says Mabasa.

Although Drive Dry speaks to all South Africans who have access to a car and who drink alcohol socially, it targets mainly 18- to 25-year-olds who tend to be more casual about drinking and driving.

To encourage the target market to participate, a re-ward mechanism is in place where consumers can win vouchers from Vida-e-Cafe, Pick ‘n Pay, Engen (conven-ience shop) and KFC, among others. (Article and photo supplied by Meropa Com-munications)

Technology for tomorrow’s vehicles

Goodyear partners with StreetScooter to design and build tomorrow’s ideal carGoodyear announced last week that it is co-operating with StreetScooter at the Geneva Motor Show 2013.

StreetScooter is a university-driven, multi-partnership venture to develop a next-generation electric vehicle for Europe and beyond. Named after the popular “autoscooter” that children and adults enjoy at fairs all around the world, the StreetScooter is a new way of approaching tomor-row’s car.

The car is designed to oper-ate in tomorrow’s inner cities, delivering a compact, yet roomy car that runs on electricity, de-livers almost no pollutants to its environment and runs quietly. The project is being followed by Goodyear as it is fully aligned with its vision of developing a sustainable future for mobility.

Streetscooter is not the product of a single fi rm, but the result of a major venture partnership between around 20 companies: auto parts suppliers, technology companies, software develop-ers, university researchers, and so forth. The project is a major collaboration between small or medium companies that not only have a hand in building the car,

but also in creating it. Each part-ner can provide its own advanced technologies to help deliver an inner-city car. The result is a modular vehicle, with parts that can be added, removed and reused, depending on customer preference.

The modular approach gives the car an additional edge as it can be built quickly and inex-pensively.

“The StreetScooter fills the gap that lies today between two-wheel and existing cars and serves the needs of daily urban mobility from 45 up to 130 km and 15 000 km per year at a top speed of 105 km/h, with an op-timal price-performance ratio,” says Professor Achim Kampker, CEO at StreetScooter GmbH. It can seat 2 or 3 plus 1 passenger and offers up to 850 litres of volume in the trunk.”

The StreetScooter was born in Aachen, Germany, but it soon became international with the involvement of specialists from different companies. “Each company involved in the project brings its expertise and manufac-turing capabilities,” said Kampk-er. “Obviously, where Goodyear is concerned, the challenge was

to develop a tyre that manages specifi c needs of electric vehicles which often provide a relatively constant torque, even at very low speeds, which increases the acceleration performance of an electric vehicle in comparison to a vehicle with a similar internal combustion engine.”

The StreetScooter will launch in several European markets later this year. “The goal was not just to conceive an electric vehicle, but to produce a car dedicated to the consumers’ needs at a frac-tion of the cost of the existing electric cars,” adds Kampker

“At Geneva, Goodyear is pre-senting several distinct projects that have to do with future sustainability – including low-rolling resistance tyres with A grade European tyre labels and our Air Maintenance Technology tyre,” says Lie Junius, director for public affairs at Goodyear EMEA. “They refl ect our views on how we see the need for sus-tainable mobility in tomorrow’s world, building on a need to decrease emissions on the road. It is part of our commitment to a sustainable future.” (Issued by Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Hold-ings (Pty) Ltd)

The Hyundai i20 range now boasts fi ve derivatives – topped by the new 1.4 CRDi Glide with its turbodiesel engine. Inside the latest addition to the i20 range in South Africa beats a new heart: A 1,4 litre turbo-charged four cylinder diesel engine that delivers 66 kW of peak power and an exemplary 220 Nm maximum torque. Linked to a smooth and effi cient 6-speed manual transmission, this translates to more than ample power through the front wheels for the medium-sized hatch back, but with equally exemplary fuel economy fi gure of 5 litres per 100 km, recorded on a combined European test cycle. Birds to fly over Hornet?

Tendani Netshikweta of Seven Stars (closest to camera) and Muvhofhololi Mudanalwo of Development Stars chase the outgoing ball.

Makwarela Development Stars were far too good for Thembaluvhilo Seven Stars, whom they brutally walloped 5-1 in their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

The referee, Mr Dion Mphuma, flashed the first yellow card in the ninth minute. Vhutshilo Mawela of Seven Stars obstructed Rivaldo Masindi and Mphuma wasted no time before producing yel-low. Development Stars took the lead in the 14th minute. Muvhofhololi Mudanalwo beat the keeper with a long-range volley, scoring the only goal of the first half.

Thuso Murovhi of Development Stars was also booked for a late tackle on Thabelo Matakanyi. Development Stars made a clever move when they replaced Thuso Murovhi with Akani “Bob” Maluleke.

Maluleke scored a hat trick, despite the fact that he came on as a substitute in the second half. His first goal came in the 60th minute. He beat the keeper, Charley Matshete, with a vol-ley from a place kick. Seven Stars pulled one back four minutes later. They were awarded a penalty after Vhutshilo Mawela was brought down within the box. Rendani Malambe made no mistake from the penalty spot. Develop-ment Stars scored the third in the 68th minute. Akani Maluleke was on target again, following a clearing error by Seven Stars defender Ofhani Mulovhedzi. Maluleke dispossessed Mulovhed-zi and ran straight to the keeper before unleash-ing a ground cutter.

As if what he had already done was not enough, Maluleke com-pleted his hat trick af-ter beating the offside trap in the 79th minute. Tendani Makhuvha, who came on as a substitute, scored the fifth with a header after a scramble within the box.

Easy 5-1 victory for Makwarela Development Stars

Rockers FC crush Shayandima Disco Five 4-1

Tshifhiwa Mmbooi of Basel (left) and Kenneth Lesia of United wrestle to win the ball.

By Frank Mavhungu

2-1 Victory for Basel FCBasel FC beat Rospa United 2-1 in a Safa second division league match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

The absence of the Rospa Unit-ed’s playmaker, Marks Munyai, was evident from the onset as there was no one to win and distribute balls from the middle of the park to the goal poachers. Zanempi Methula of Rospa United was reprimanded with a card for dangerous play on Thabo Diale six minutes into the game.

Basel were the first to effect a change to their starting 11. They replaced Lamon Mokeketwa with Lucky Mkhari in the 20th minute. United missed a fortune five minutes later. Their captain, Mashudu “Tlo-lo” Mashapha, caused an upset when he shot aimlessly from close range.

The score board was still blank at the end of the first 45 minutes, despite numerous attempts from both sides. Basel broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. The former Black Leopards fast forward, Walter Ramulondi, won the ball just behind the centre line and ran towards the right corner from where he dished up a square pass to Shonisani Rambebu. Ram-bebu beat the United keeper, Tembe Maweni, with a ground cutter to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Rambebu was later replaced with Godfrey Mahlale. Basel increased the tally in the 67th minute. Lucky Mkhari blasted in a rocket, following a square pass from Velile Mdaka.

Rospa United introduced Kho-motso Matimela and Jacob Hlanze for Kenneth Lesia and the team’s

captain, Mashudu Mashapha, respec-tively. Their solitary goal came in the 79th minute . Zanempi Methula beat the keeper with a vol-ley. Oscar Silima of United was booked for an infringement on Thabo Diale to-wards the end of the game.

Rotondwa Kutame of Rockers hinders Rofhiwa Baloyi of Disco Five from reaching the ball.

In spite of the fact that their coach, Mr Eric Siobo, was given his marching orders early in the second half, Rockers FC managed to defeat Shayandima Disco Five 4-1 in their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rockers approached the game aggressively, with their strikers looking hungry for goals. It was in the fourth minute that they scored their opening goal. Emmanuel Neswiswi finished off a rebound, following an attempt by Patrick Muthivhi.

The goal was a wakeup call to Disco Five. They retaliated nine minutes afterwards. They were awarded a corner kick, which gave rise to a beauti-ful goal by Phathutshedzo Mafhali. The score was still 1-1 at the end of the first half.

Things turned against Rockers shortly after the start of the second half. The team’s head coach, Mr Eric Siobo, was given his marching orders for swearing at the match officials.

Rockers continued to fight like a united team, despite the setback. They were duly rewarded a few moments later. Their slender striker, Em-manuel Neswiswi, forced his way through the defence of Disco Five and unleashed a powerful ground cutter.

Disco Five were reduced to 10 players when David Nekhavhambe was given his marching or-ders for a second bookable infringement.

Trevor Tshisikule scored the third in the 67th minute, following a corner kick that was taken by Maduvhahafani Makhuvha.

Rockers were also reduced to 10 men when Trevor Tshisikule saw red for obstructing Phathut-

shedzo Mafhali within the penalty area. Rockers were awarded a penalty after Rotondwa Kutame was brought

down within the box. Neville Man-amela scored from the white spot to bring the final score to 4-1.

The goalscorers of Benny´s, Rotondwa Matumba and Elias Ranyoa.

Gogobole Home Defenders will not participate in the next stage of the prestigious Mageu knockout.

This follows their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Benny's Care at the Gogobole grounds on Sunday. The match was char-acterized by fruitless attempts. Defenders squandered three obvious chances within the first 17 minutes. In the first instance, Thabelo Tharini caused an upset when he dribbled past everyone and shot wide from the goal line. It was not long before Mulalo

Lithole hesitated for too long to unleash within the danger area of Benny's until he lost possession.

As if that was not good enough to stir up the team’s enthusiastic supporters, Rotondwa Matumba committed a similar blunder moments thereafter. Benny's were awarded a place kick in the 30th minute. Elias Ranyoa tried his luck from the set piece and the ball landed behind the net without any further touch. The score was still 1-0 when the referee blew the half-time

whistle.Benny's came back strongly

in the last half. Rotondwa Ma-tumba scored the second goal of his team, following a square pass from Mbulaheni Mukw-evho. Abel Rambuda of Defend-ers was the only player who was booked for a dangerous tackle. He tackled Pfarelo Musiwa off the ball and the referee was le-nient enough to let him go with yellow. Defenders made two changes to their starting lineup, but that did not stop Benny's from controling the match.

The CEO of the Bankseta, Mr Max Mak-hubalo.

Diplomas for several Bankseta studentsA group of students from the 2012 Letsema Learnership Programme graduated at the Fu-sion Boutique Hotel in Polokwane last Thursday (7 March).

The group forms part of the 900 nationwide unemployed youth with matric, in possession of a Financial Services Advice Learnership with NQF Level 5. The graduates were offered an opportunity to enter the financial service sector, by linking the theoretical component, through the Milpark Busi-ness School, to workplace experience in the form of an industry learnership.

According to a statement by the marketing and communication division of the Bankseta, the Bank-seta-sponsored intervention programme, Letsema Learnership, consists of six structured modules. For each module, learners are expected to complete an assignment and an examination based on the aca-demic content of the module successfully.

The course entails modules such as banking advice, business management, financial legisla-tion, financial planning, economic fundamentals in investment and fundamental principles of basic accounting.

The programme is recognised by the Financial Services Board (FSB) as a Financial and Intermedi-ary Services Act (FAIS) accredited qualification.

“I’m humbled today, to see a group of dedicated and committed youths coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, equipped with the right tools for a fruitful future and for those of their families,” says Max Makhubalo, CEO of the Bankseta.

The previously disadvantaged and unemployed candidates are equipped with specific core bank-ing and microfinance skills required in the work environment, so that they are competitive and employable to entry-level positions within the

banking and microfinance fraternity.“We pride our ourselves on strategic relation-

ships we have with our stakeholders in the financial services sector. Since the inception of the pro-gramme, 7 577 learners were recruited and boasts an average of over 80% successful completion and employment rate average,” adds Makhubalo.

As part of the 2013 intake, 480 learners will go through the programme and the succesful lot will graduate in 2014. Applications for next year’s learnership will be during July and August 2013.

For more information regarding the Bankseta’s learnership programmes, visit www.bankseta.org.za or find The Bankseta on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Humiliating goalless draw for Western Stars

Daniel Nkosi beats Tumelo Sinugo.

Daniel Mukosi of Stars (left) and Mpho Khantshi attack the ball.

Madombidzha Wetsern Stars were held to a goalless draw by the up-and-coming Za-menkomste FC in a Safa Vhembe SAB league match at Madombidzha on Saturday.

Stars was the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned .This result-ed in their putting a lot of pressure on the defence of Zamenkomste for the better part of the match. The first half was characterised by dangerous play from the home team's players. In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed several yellow cards in quick succession. Musandiwa Makhudzha and Victor Mulaudzi of Zamenkomste were booked for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play.

In the second half, the local lads put more pres-sure on their opponents. The absence of many play-ers in the Stars defence was felt from the onset. Os-car Ramantswana of Stars could not make the grade as the opponents used him as their freeway.

Stars' strikers wasted many opportunities to win the match. The home team's central back, Thabo Mamburu, and Hulisani Mavhungu were repri-manded with cards for rough tackling and wasting time respectively.

Stars introduced Paris Mushulowa for Thabo Matuba, but this did not have any influence on the outcome of the match. The draw was a fair result for the evenly contested match.

Things are quickly going from bad to worse in the Dynamos camp. They continued to drop more signif-icant league points last weekend.

The former pride of Giyani lost 1-2 to the NFD rookies, Roses United, at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday.

This defeat was the second in a row for Ri khomeni ri nga peli, after they had lost 0-1 to African Warriors at the Charles Mopedi Stadium last Wednesday. Although Dynamos are lying at the bottom of the log, the team’s head coach, Mr Owen da Gama, is adamant that his charges will soon make a comeback and avoid relegation at the end of the season.

In the other NFD matches played over the past weekend, Sivutsa Stars shared the spoils with African War-riors at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday afternoon. They played to a goalless draw in a match that was characterized by wasted scoring opportunities.

After winning their last three matches in a row, Polokwane City came back with empty hands from their away match against Vasco da Gama. They lost 1-4 at the Parow Park Stadium, much to the disap-pointment of the hundreds of fans who accompanied the team to the mother city.

FC Cape Town have reason to cel-ebrate after beating FCAK 3-0 at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. The three goals for FC Cape Town were scored in the last 15 minutes of the game. Jomo Cosmos failed to stop Witbank Spurs from collecting league points at their expense. They were beaten 1-2 at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. Thanda Royal Zulu continued to pave their way up by beating Blackburn Rovers 4-1 at the Richards Bay Stadium.

Milano United and United FC played to a goalless draw at the Moru-leng Stadium in the Free State. The coach of Dynamos, Mr Owen da Gama.

Hotspurs to pay for United’s defeat?Giyani Hotspurs will be lucky if they manage to hold Rospa United to a draw when they meet in their Safa 2nd division match at the Univen Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Rospa United are still fresh from a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Basel FC at the Makwarela Stadium last Saturday.

The good news about Rospa United is that their playmaker, Marks Munyai, will be avail-able for selection. He was out of action last weekend, due to a groin injury.

In another match in the same

division tomorrow afternoon, Basel will battle it out for league points against the pace setters, Baroka, at the Ngoana Mahube Stadium at Jane Furse.

Basel are one of the close league-title contenders and they are six points behind Baroka. A win for Baroka will take Basel out of the race, leaving Winners Park and Baroka as the only contenders.

Nobela All Stars will play against Magezi FC at the Ses-hego Stadium.

Modimolle Aces will under-take a journey to the Mogol

Stadium for their match against Lephalale Young Killers, while Ray Pillars and Mighty will rub shoulders in their Polokwane derby at the Seshego Stadium.

The struggling Phungo All Stars must win their match against Mosesetjane All Stars in order to strengthen their chances of escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season. They will meet at the Mahwelereng Sta-dium. Blue Rocks will host The Dolphins at the Nkowankowa.

On Sunday, Winners Park will host Baobab Zero Fake at the Mahwelereng Stadium.

Rospa United’s playmaker, Marks Munyai.

Leopards out of Nedbank KOBlack Leopards were booted out of the Nedbank Cup KO competition on Wednesday evening, when Platinum Stars beat them 2-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Platinum Stars or Dikwena, got their first scoring opportunity in the 12th minute, but their speedy forward, Hen-rico Botes, shot straight to the Leopards’ keeper, Azwinndini Maphaha. He palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

The visitors from the North West took the lead in the 27th minute. They were awarded a corner kick and Tintswalo Tshabalala took it from the left cor-ner. Tshabalala scored after a scramble in the box.

Leopards’ midfield-ers, Raymond Monama, Edgar Manaka and Dunga Munganga lost touch in the last 15 minutes of the first half. That resulted in Lidoda Duvha conceded four corner kicks in a quick succession.

Stars almost increased the tally three minutes into the last half. Their left flank, Thuso Phala, watched in disbelief as his volley hit the wood-work and bounced back into play. Leopards re-placed Edgar Manaka with Sizwe Sibiya in the 50th minute and Hum-

phrey Khosa of Leopards was warned with a card for bad tackle to Henrico Botes moments thereafter.

Dunga Munganga of Leopards was brought down within the box and the referee, Mr Victor Hlungwani, remained silent at the time when everyone thought he would award Leopards a penalty. Hen-drico Botes scored the second for the Stars with a header, following a square pass by the Malawian international, Robert Ngambi, in the 64th minute.

Lidoda Duvha threatened to score two minutes later, when Abbas Amidu unleashed from the edge of the box. The ball did not have enough power to beat the Stars’ keeper.

Instead of replacing a tired Rodney Ramagalela, the Leopards technical staff did the unexpected when they introduced Mxolisi Gumede for Abbas Amidu in the 74th minute. As a delaying tactic, the Stars relaxed on the ball for the remaining part of the game.
