Musha Isap Ali Patel (62) and his wife, Hasina Mus- ka Patel (60), the owners of Elti Café in Eltivil- las, were arrest- ed on Friday after a human arm was dis- covered. The police ques- tioned them along with the main sus- pect, Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo (38). Tshi- khudo ap- parently told the police that he had been promised R70 000 and a motor vehicle by the Pa- tels for supplying the hand, which was to be used for muti purposes. All three of them briefly ap- peared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday. After his arrest, Tshikhudo allegedly con- fessed to the police that the hand had come from the body of a woman whom he had been hired to kill. He told the police that the woman’s boyfriend had employed him. He led them to the bushy, mountainous area on the corner of Celliers and Songozwi Street, near the Grasdak Guest House. There, in the early hours of Saturday morn- ing, the police found the mutilated and already decomposing body of the woman. Her arm and private parts had been cut off and both her eyes had been removed, apparently while she was still alive. The police also found, lying next to her body, a pair of grey trousers, a red bra and white socks that she was wearing. She has medium-length dark brown hair. The woman’s body was left to rot more than a kilometre into the bushy area and the police had to struggle for hours to clear the way into the bushes with pangas. Appar- ently, she had already been killed the week before, on 27 March. Her remains were finally airlifted from the bushes with the help of a police helicopter. According to Capt Maano Sadike, the spokesperson for the Makhado police, the woman was lured to the bushes by her boy- friend under the pretence that they would be performing a prayer ritual for her. After the couple had finished praying, the woman was ordered to undress, and when she refused, she was overpowered and killed by Tshikhudo. On Wednesday, the story took a dramatic turn when the Patel couple appeared in court again. Tshikhudo apparently made a statement wherein he admitted that he had tried to rob the Patel couple at their shop in Eltivillas. The police also found new evidence that may have pre-empted his further confession. Desmond Mphaphuli, attorney for the Patel family, said he pointed out to the investigating officer that there are inconsistencies in Tshi- khudo’s version of events. On Monday it was established via DNA testing that the murdered women is a Zimbabwean, not Asian, and was Tshikhudo’s girlfriend. It also became clear that Tshikhudo entered the shop with the body part in his pocket and acted as if he found it in the freezer. Tshikhudo apparently entered the shop with the intension of robbing the Indian couple. When his mission failed, he waved a human arm in the shop to scare customers away. His intention was probably to loot the shop in the absence of the owners and customers. The statement that he was employed by the Indian couple to kill an Asian woman for them was a fabrication. The Patel family spokesperson, Nazeer Drivah, said it will be difficult for the Patel couple to be trusted by customers, because of Tshikhudo’s lies. He said the elderly Indian couple were praying for most of the time while in custody in the police cells. After being released they were treated by doctors and will also have to receive further counselling. “We are supporting them because they are innocent. It is just a pity that customers are running away and the shop is still closed,” said Drivah. The chairperson in the Vhembe district for the association that represents traditional healers, Vho-Mbilivhili Neluvhola, pleaded with people to have a mind-set change and stop believing that human body parts could be used to increase business. “Big businesses in South Africa are thriv- ing while businesses of those who believe in using human parts have closed down,” said Neluvhola. Putting people before profit

Senior Regional Magistrate Ronnie Rambau this week asked the magistrate in his corruption trial to withdraw from the case.

Rambau and his co-accused, attorney T E Lubisi and ex-state prosecutor Estene Wil-lemse, appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Both Rambau and Lubisi, who conducted their own defence, brought an application demand-ing that the presiding magistrate step down from the case. They claim that the magistrate had befriended some of the state’s witnesses. At the time of going to press on Wednesday, the court had yet to give a verdict on the

three accused’s application. In the meantime, the Mag-

istrate’s Commission is very cautious about answering any questions put to them regarding Rambau’s suspension.

The Limpopo Mirror was, however, able to confirm that Rambau is still provisionally suspended.

Documents to contest the ap-pointment of Toni Mphephu Ramabulana as king of the Vhavenda were filed in the Limpopo High Court in Tho-hoyandou earlier this week. In the application, several consti-tutional issues are also raised.

The first applicant is the 21-year-old Masindi Clementine Mphephu, only child of the late paramount chief of the Vhav-enda, Tshimangadzo Mphephu (who ruled under the name Dim-banyika). It is argued that she should have been next in line for the kingship but was overlooked because of gender discrimination.

The second applicant is Mbu-laheni Charles Mphephu, eldest son of the late Patrick Mphephu. He argues that, should Masindi not be considered for the king-ship position, he would be next in line.

The legal battle for kingship first appeared in the courts in December last year when papers were served on seven respon-dents, which include Toni Ram-abulana, President Jacob Zuma (who had announced that Toni would be the new king), as well as the national and provincial houses of traditional leaders. The applicants ask the court to firstly set aside the decision to appoint Toni Ramabulana as king and then to declare that the practice of only installing males as traditional leaders be declared unconstitutional.

According to Mr Johann Ham-mann (Sr), attorney for the two applicants, they requested certain documents after filing the ap-plication in December last year. Some of the documents were only made available in the past month. One of the important documents is the letter from the Mphephu Ramabulana royal council in which they make a recommendation to the office of the president.

The meeting of the royal coun-cil held on 14 August 2010 is important for a variety of reasons and features strongly in the affi-davit of Charles Mbulaheni. This meeting followed the announce-ment of the Nhlapo Commission that the kingship of the Vhav-enda resides in the house of the Mphephu Ramabulana family. The royal family had to decide, based on certain criteria, who the incumbent should be. The recom-mendation to the president was that it must be Toni Ramabulana.

In the minutes of the meeting, reference is made to the manner in which a king is selected. “In the Mphephu Ramabulana family in particular, only males succeed to the throne,” the minutes read. The king is identified by the senior khadzi who, according to the meeting, was Vho-Makhadzi vho-Phophi Mphephu.

Mbulaheni disputes the pro-cedures that were followed to identify the new king and also the authority of the people mak-ing the decisions. He argues that only a select group of people was invited to this meeting and it was not representative of the royal family. He claims they were never informed of the meeting and were excluded from the pro-cess. In his affidavit, Mbulaheni claims various anomalies, among others that a large number of the attendees were not part of the family structure or royal council. He argues that even Khosi FP Kutama, who acted as chairper-son of the meeting, is not part of the royal council.

Mbulaheni and Masindi be-lieve that, because Toni Ram-abulana was appointed as ndumi to his half-brother Dimbanyika, he cannot be considered for the kingship position. In Mbula-heni’s affidavit, he explains that “In terms of a strict requirement of Vhavenda customary law, the ndumi to a king or queen can

never be the next king. This is because the ndumi is one of the closest advisors to the king or queen. It is thus believed that a person in that position would be tempted to kill or displace the king or queen if there was any in-centive of succession involved.”

The two applicants also argue that Toni Ramabulana does not come from the right dzekiso house. The dzekiso wife (or candle wife) is appointed ac-cording to certain customs and there may be more than one candle wife to make provision for cases where the first candle wife does not bear children. The late Ramaano Patrick Mphephu had eight wives and the three parties involved in the current court case were each born of different wives. Masindi Mphephu, the first candle wife, gave birth to Dimbanyika Mphephu (father of Masindi Clementine Mphephu). Doris Mphephu, his fourth wife (but second candle wife) is the mother of Mbulaheni Charles Mphephu. Toni Ramabulana is the son of Matamela Mphephu, the second wife.

The legal arguments will, however, firstly focus on the constitutional issue of whether a woman may be ignored when deciding on an heir. Masindi and Mbulaheni’s legal team reckons there are plenty of examples in African history to make out a case for the inclusion of women. Apart from Modjadji, the queen of the Balobedu, there was also the Tlokwa queen, Mantatisi. Queen Mantatisi (ca. 1781–1836) was one of the best-known, and most feared, female military and political leaders of the early 19th century.

Poor woman loses house in freak accidentWhile the rest of the country was celebrating Easter, one family in Vhembe was trying to pick up the pieces of their lives, following the destruc-tion of their five-roomed house by a huge tree.

The Makungo family of Tshisahulu Gombameni is now homeless and very desperate as they do not have the means to rebuild their house since no one is working in the family. The owner of the house, Ms Esther

Makungo (53), said the destruc-tion of their house shattered their dreams as they had saved for many years for the house. She said her husband, Daniel Makungo, who was in Moria at the time of the incident, also took out a loan while still working way back in 1999 for the construction of the house.

“It is only luck that we were not crushed inside the house. A few minutes earlier I was in the house and, moments later,

when I was outside doing my laundry, the whole house was flattened by this huge tree. We just thank God that my two children and I are still alive today,” she said.

The nasty and shocking inci-dent happened on the Saturday morning. To make matters worse, the family members had to run for dear life when a huge swarm of bees attacked them and their neighbours. Pointing to a swelling on her face, Makungo said she did not know what to do. “My house fell and most of my furniture was destroyed and I do not even have money to repair all the damage. Just have a look - I am from the shop to buy this mealie meal for R33. If I had money I would have bought a bigger bag, but because of poverty in the family, there is nothing we can do. We really need help,” she said.

During Mirror’s visit, some community members and relatives arrived to console

the family.

Police make a break-through in the Maringa murder case

“Double jeopardy”, claim Mulaudzi’s defence team

Police finally made a breakthrough in the murder case of the Venda musician, Moses Maringa. The gruesome murder was committed in March 2010, but the suspects managed to elude the long arm of the law for quite some time. In a twist of events, the police arrested six suspects earlier this year.

Limpopo police spokeswoman

Col Ronel Otto said the six recently appeared in the Malamulele Mag-istrate’s Court and their case was postponed to 23 April 2013. The six are Lawrence Rashekanya (46), Thomas Rabulana (46), Freddy Mal-uleke, Sonto Shibambo (35), Patience Ndhanba (38) and Tchani Semakak-ganyo (36). Five of the suspects are in custody while Freddy Maluleke is

out on bail of R15 000.Musician Moses Maringa (47) was

found murdered in a burnt-out car in nearby bushes at Mbhalati outside Malamulele. His death shocked the music fraternity and the local com-munity. He was found dead alongside a local woman, Eunice Khosa, 28, of Mdabula.

The police initially battled to iden-

tify the bodies. Maringa’s body was later identified after his car’s number plates were traced and the identify of the owner established. The police then had a further headache, which was to identify the woman.

The family of the dead woman eventually identified her with the help of a handkerchief that was found at the scene.

Instructing attorney Joshua Maenetja with suspended Thulamela Chief of TrafficThilivhali Mulaudzi, outside the Makhado court.

The fraud case against the suspend-ed chief of traffic of the Thulamela Municipality was postponed once more and the case was transferred back to the Sibasa Regional Court.

The 48-year-old Thilivhali Mu-laudzi appeared in the Regional Court in Makhado on Monday morning. Mulaudzi allegedly assisted more than 800 people in acquiring drivers’ licences fraudulently. He was arrested in July last year and charged with 820 cases of fraud, or alternatively contra-vening sections of the National Road Traffic Act. The case was set to start on Monday and continue on Tuesday.

Mulaudzi arrived at the court ac-companied by a strong legal defence team, which included advocate Barry Roux, who made headlines a month ago when he defended the SA Olym-pic athlete, Oscar Pistorius, on a murder charge. Mulaudzi was previ-ously defended by Advocate Tumi Mokoena.

Advocate Roux argued that the charges against his client should be dropped, as he had already been ac-

quitted on similar charges. Mulaudzi was arrested in November 1999 on charges of corruption and fraud. He was acquitted on all charges in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court in July 2003.

During Monday’s appearance in court, Advocate Roux said the charges had now been brought back to court and this was unlawful. This is more commonly known as “double jeopardy”, a principle that states that a person cannot be prosecuted twice for the same offence.

The state prosecutor argued that the matter had originated in the Thohoyandou district and should be heard there.

The magistrate ruled that the case be postponed to 20 May for a hear-ing in the Sibasa Regional Court. He said the Makhado Regional Court sat only two days a week, whereas the Sibasa Regional Court would be able to accommodate a five-day hearing. It would thus be easier for this court to finalise the case. Mulaudzi’s bail of R20 000 was also extended.

of the moment, said the family felt that it was good to thank God for being so good to the family by keeping her husband under his care for many years while he is sick. "My husband has been good to me and his family, he dedi-cated all his life to his family and he has been an exemplary hus-band. I feel if all men were like him, there would be no divorces

in families,” she said. She said people were used to heaping praises on people when they were dead and could not hear what people said about them. "We are here honouring a great man; a man among men who loved us all. He provided warmth to the whole family and we still cherish the happy memories,” she said.

Ramathikhithi has six children, all of whom are working. He has 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

"Offenders who have been released on parole must perform community service and duties as part of their parole conditions. The chores will help them to learn different skills and to work well with the community," said the head of the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre’s Sibasa satellite station, Mr Nndanganeni Muleba. He presented 34 offenders released on parole who were recently deployed to clean the surroundings of the Hayani Hospital. According to Muleba, any offender released on parole who violates his or her parole conditions needs to be sent back to prison and serve the remaining time in custody. The chief executive officer of Hayani hospital, Ms Rudzani Tshikovhi, said that they welcomed the deployment of the parolees to help clean the surroundings. In our photo, some of the parolees display their skills in gardening by clearing grass and weeds at Hayani Hospital. Mr Muleba looks on.

Stepfather gets 18 years for raping girlRape of our women and chil-dren is out of control, not only in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the province, but nation-wide.

This statement was made by the State during the sentencing of a man who had raped his 12-year-old stepdaughter. The 46-year-old man from Waterval appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to a charge of rape.

During his court appearance it came to light that the man, who was a security guard, was caught red-handed raping his stepdaugh-ter. The man had locked the girl's mother in her room before he

went to the girl's room. When the mother woke up and found her door locked and her husband gone, she unlocked the door with a spare key and started looking for her husband. When she could not find him, she went to check on her sleeping daughter. Upon opening her daughter's door, she found her husband raping her daughter.

During a medical examination, semen was collected from the girl, which was positively linked to the farther. The incident took place in June of last year and the man was arrested in September after he had fled from his home.

According to the man’s plea explanation, he was drunk when

raped the girl. He also said that he was suffering from a kidney disease and had only completed Grade 10.

During his court appearance, the court conceded that liquor might have played a role but shot down claims about his poor health and education. “You didn’t plead guilty out of re-morse, but rather because you were caught red-handed,” said regional magistrate Pat Cloete during the man’s sentencing.

The man was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to carry a firearm and his name had to be recorded in the national sex offenders register.

The Makhado Municipality's mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi (center, back), recently donated school uniforms to 18 pupils at Johannes Mulambilu Secondary School. He said that the time of going to school with tattered uniforms was now in the past. This came after the Makhado municipal library had identified needy pupils at the school through their outreach programmes. Photo supplied.

Man accused of brutally killing his wife

The deceased´s family members are standing along the grassy path where the accused had allegedly dragged Ms Hlunwane to the back of the house, which can be seen in the back. The deceased´s mother, Ms Modjadji (centre) is flanked by the deceased´s children, Basani (left) and Mafanelo.

The community of Mahonisi near Elim is still shocked and trying to find answers about the death of a woman whose body was found at the back of her neighbour’s house in the early hours of Good Friday.

A mother of four children, Ms Lizzy Hlunwane (40), was discovered lying dead and stark naked on the hard gravel in her neighbour’s yard. The Waterval police investigated the matter and held the woman’s spouse, Freddy Rikhotso (40), for questioning.

According to the information made available by the deceased’s family and the police, Rikhotso had allegedly confessed to killing Hlunwane in her house on Thursday night. His blood-soaked clothes were found in the room which he had shared with the deceased. Rikhotso had allegedly been wearing the same clothes the previous day, said a family member.

“It seems that the accused had dragged the de-ceased out of the house and pulled her along the grass to throw her down in the neighbour’s yard to conceal evidence,” said the spokesperson for the Waterval police, W/O Kedibone Mabatha. “She was also found naked.”

A family member who was at the scene of the

crime when the police were moving around with Rikhotso, said that he pointed at the place where he had hidden the deceased’s clothes, which were also covered in blood.

The deceased’s mother and the four children she had left behind are traumatised, following the senseless killing of their loved one. “Na vaviseka emoyeni wa mina (I feel distraught),” said the de-ceased’s eldest daughter, Basani Hlunwane (23). “I’ve just finished writing my Grade12 and I was hoping to see my mother taking me to school, so I could also help my siblings financially. We are now left without a parent.”

The local Sanco branch’s vice-chairperson condemned the killing of the woman. “We are still shocked,” he said. “Women need tender care and total respect. One can’t understand what is happen-ing in Vhembe, because so many women have been murdered by their partners ever since February. We are calling for peace and understanding within our families.”

W/O Mabatha confirmed that a case of murder was opened against Rikhotso, following his ar-rest. “He appeared in court on Tuesday and he will appear again on 9 May,” he said. “Bail was not granted.”

Use water sparingly, warns Minister“South Africa is a water-scarce country, and we urge communities to use water sparingly. We must conserve this precious resource,” said the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa, when launching the Tshikundamalema Water Project a fort-night ago.

The launching of the water project also formed part of celebrating Water Week.

“It is the consti-tutional rights of all South Africans to ac-cess good, clean and safe water for domes-tic and all other uses. We want communi-ties to be encouraged to start up their own

water projects, such as the Tshikundamalema community,” said Molewa.

The Tshikundamalema Water Project was initiated by community members about three years ago, after numerous shortages in villages such as Mvala, Tshitambe and Mutshuludi in Ha-Tshikundamalema. It is estimated that about 150 households will benefit from the project. They draw water from the fountain on top of the mountain. One of the community members set to benefit from the Tshikundamalema Water Project, gogo Nyatshavhungwa Kwinda (82) of Mvala, said the project had changed their life for the better. “We used to fetch dirty water that we shared with animals from the Mabegeni fountain. Now, we can get water from the tap in each af-fected household,” she added. She said villagers collected R400 each and the funds were used to purchase pipes and taps.

Photographed during the launch of the Tshikundamalema Water Project are, from left to right, Cllr Lucas Manyuha, Min Edna Molewa, Thovhele Mmbengeni Tshikundamalema, Cllr Josephine Mukwevho and Cllr Grace Mahosi.

Granny Nyatshavhungwa Kwinda and some of her grandchildren fetch clean water from the tap erected for each household as part of the Tshikundamalema Water Project.

“Be at the forefront of development”Communities and traditional leaders were urged to be in the forefront of implementing ser-vice delivery and development affecting their areas.

“We want our traditional leaders and communities to participate actively and give us their prioritized projects in line with the integrated development plan (IDP). We are conducting the public-participation pro-gramme in Vhembe’s various municipalities, so that com-munities and traditional leaders can make input in line with implanting service delivery,” said Vhembe’s district execu-tive mayor, Tshitereke Matibe.

Matibe, accompanied by councillors from the district’s consultative meetings with

various stakeholders, is present-ing the draft five-year inter-graded-development plan. The event, which started in Mutale last Wednesday, proceeded to Musina, was in Makhado on Thursday and in Thohoyandou on Friday.

Matibe is presenting the R1,2 billion budget for the 2013/14 financial year. “We don’t want to implement things for the communities, but we urge them to tell us what their prioritised plan and programmes are.”

According to him, commu-nities should understand that while the access to clean water is a constitutional right for the people, water remained a seri-ous challenge. He said that the Vhembe District as the water-

services authority had set aside R71,2 million for water this financial year.

In Mutale, a disabled young man, Mr Harry Makhanthisa, said he was worried about the lack of resources such as brail typewriters and computers to be used by people with disabilities. Makhanthisa (42), the deputy chairperson of the Mutale Dis-abled Forum, added that the Mutale municipality didn’t take into consideration the needs of people living with disabilities.

A DA councillor, Mr Joseph Mariba, raised the fact that the Mutale local municipality was using equipment of poor quality, leaving communities without proper services for long periods.

R10 000 bail for suspect in rape case

Suspected cigarette smuggler shot

Taxi bosses complain about wage laws

A 32-year-old suspect appeared in the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court held in Tiyani, in con-nection with a case where a seven-year-old girl was raped and left lying in a street in Olifantshoek.

The suspect, who is believed to be the victim’s uncle, was granted R10 000 bail last Thurs-day. He is required to report to the nearest police station

between 07:00 and 19:00 once a week. The court further ordered that the accused may not leave the Mopani district without the approval of the investigating officer.

The accused’s arrest comes after the discovery of the raped girl in the street on 17 March, bleeding and unconscious, by two young boys. The suspect was later traced and arrested,

following a car chase, after it was alleged that he was the last person to be seen with the girl.

According to the information made available by the police, the girl was allegedly sent by her grandmother to deliver house keys at the suspect’s house. The child didn’t return and was later found lying unconscious in the street. The accused will appear in court again on 7 May.

A 26-year-old suspected ciga-rette smuggler escaped death by a whisker after he was shot and seriously injured by a member of an anti-smuggling team, involving police and soldiers, which was patrolling along the Limpopo River.

Chief Supt Lawrence Chin-hengo of the police at Beit Bridge said that the incident occurred last Sunday (31/3) at around 17:00 at Nottingham Forestry out of Beit Bridge.

“We received reports of ram-pant smuggling of cigarettes into South Africa and deployed our joint teams. While they were on patrol, they came across a South African-registered Ford Ranger, which was coming from Beit Bridge and heading towards Sentinel Safaris. The driver was signaled to stop, but he ignored this and continued speeding. That prompted one of the soldiers to fire a single shot and, in the process, hit one of the occupants

in the foot,” he said.Chinhengo said the suspect

sustained severe injuries on one of his toes.

He was taken to Beit Bridge District Hospital, treated and discharged. Chinhengo said that they were still investigating the matter.

“The soldier who fired the shot is now assisting us in our inves-tigations. We have intensified our patrols along the Limpopo River,” he added.

Taxi owners were urged to comply with the sectoral de-termination, but those who feel they cannot meet the minimum wages imposed by law should apply for an exception.

This was said by Ms Unathi Ramabulana, the assistant direc-tor of employment service in the Department of Labour during a consultative review meeting with the taxi sector. The meeting was held in Thohoyandou last Thursday.

Ms Ramabulana said the aim of the meeting with the taxi sec-tor was to get some input from role players within the industry in terms of what they thought should be the new minimum wage for the sector. Those in-vited included taxi owners, taxi drivers, union members and Department of Transport repre-sentatives.

The current minimum wage

for a taxi driver is R2 449,90 per month. An administrative worker is to receive R2 449,90 per month, while a rank marshal should take home R1 959,40. Workers in the industry without a specified job description should get R1 713,70 per month. The minimum wages for the sector need to be revised on 1 July 2013. Latest figures state that the indus-try employs over 100 000 people countrywide. The chairperson of the Vhembe Taxi Association, Mr Balanganani Shandukani, handed in a submission to the hearing, saying that due “to the ever increasing petrol price and the change in the industry where many people own cars, we could easily opt out of the industry. We are really not able to afford this minimum wage, unless the gov-ernment subsidises us somehow, because the industry has changed drastically.”Another taxi owner

said the cities varied from one an-other and therefore one minimum wage would be unfair.

“We are situated in very remote areas where people only use taxis on a luxury basis. Our taxis only ferry people once a day, some once a month and a monthly turnover can be as little as R300,” he said.

Ramabulana said the same principles applied as in the farm-ing sector. “If you are unable to pay the minimum wage as it is set out in the sectoral determination, you are allowed to apply for a ministerial variation. You will be required to forward documents that expose your financial status for the Minister to review and give a decision thereafter”.

The public hearings continued in Jane Furse on 9 April, Modi-molle on 10 April, Tzaneen on 11 April and will conclude in Polokwane on 16 April 2013.

The National Small Contractor Network and building material retailer Cashbuild have joined forces to assist small contrac-tors in Giyani by facilitating an informative trade workshop on 18 April.

“Many builders, electricians, plumbers and painters don’t have access to vital trade information, such as where to find finance, how to raise a loan, tendering and more. These workshops aim to help small builders address these challenges,” says Mr Thembelani Tukwayo, project director. He has lined up many interesting speakers for the workshop.

“SARS will be on hand to

share useful information with Stanger-based contractors on tax-related issues.

There will also be representa-tives from the NHBRC and the CIDB to explain their workings to contractors. We are fortunate to have Cashbuild on board, making this ambitious project possible,” said Tukwayo.

Cashbuild has teamed up with its many suppliers to present technical advice to workshop delegates. Cashbuild CEO Wer-ner de Jager says that this is an exciting project that is aimed at uplifting the general standard of the building industry. “It is our intention to make a positive

contribution to the many small contractors in Stanger and this is one of many interventions that we will be rolling out going forward,” says de Jager.

De Jager says that in the com-petitive environment currently prevailing in the building indus-try, it is important for the small contractors to have all the infor-mation that will help them deliver their projects on time and at a high-quality standard, ensuring that they secure more building projects in the future.

To attend this workshop, apply at the Cashbuild store in Giyani or call Happy Moloto at 079 026 5604.

The gogo is surrounded by her daughter, grandchild and great- grandchildren during her birthday celebration. They are assisting her to cut her Bible-like birthday cake.

At the ripe old age of 101, Gogo Tshinakaho Johannah Murongwana Tshabuse is still an amazing figure at Golgotha in Thohoyandou.

The gogo can still dance the energetic Tshivenda traditional Malende dance - something that is done by those with strength. She is still very active and can still do most of the chores done by young people.

At the weekend, her family gathered together to celebrate her many glorious years of life. A lavish birthday party, which was attended by the who is who in Thohoyandou, was held on Saturday at the Thohoyandou Indoor Centre hall.

Speakers took turns in praising the gogo for the good work she has done for the family and her community.

Her daughter, Esther Mush-aathama, the only surviving out of five children, is a well-known businesswoman. When it was time for gifts, the daughter sur-prised all when, instead of giving her an expensive gift, she handed over a Bible to her.

“We could have given her other luxuries of life, but my mother loves God in such a way that I felt the Bible would be the most appropriate gift for her. She moulded us using the Bible as a yardstick to a prosperous life. We would otherwise not be what we

are today, if it were not of her strong belief in God,” she added.

Even her cake was unique in that it resembled a Bible.

One of the gogo’s grandchil-dren, Mr Mike Mushaathama, said the gogo had had a huge impact on his life. “She was always strict and encouraged us to do good things in life. We are grateful that God spared her for us for such a long time and that we continue to learn good things from her,” he said.

“Besides the foods and ex-ercises that could make one to live long, there is one secret to a longer life. Obey God’s rules, re-spect others and God will reward you handsomely,” she said.

Family members who survived the fire are (from left to right) Wayne Mpai, Walter Mpai, Mpho Mpai and Ms Tshifhiwa Sebola.

Family nearly perish in burning houseA Grade 5 pupil at the Tshi-luwi Primary School is lying in a hospital bed, suffering excruciating pain from burns she sustained when her home was set alight during the night of 23 March at Tshituni-tsha-fhasi in Nzhelele.

Tebogo Mpai (12) sustained extreme burn wounds when her aunt’s five-room house was al-legedly set alight at about 04:00. The aunt, Tshifhiwa Sebola (31), said that three other family members had been inside the house with her - Ouma Sebola (29), Wayne Mpai (9) and Mpho Sebola (5) - as well as Tebogo, when they smelled petrol in the house.

“We were all in my bed-room, except for Tebogo, who

was sleeping alone in the next room,” said a grief-stricken Tshifhiwa.

“I had just finished speaking on the phone when my younger sister, Ouma, hinted that there was a smell of petrol coming from the passage. Soon after there was a sound which went ‘gong!’”

Tshifhiwa then rose from her bed and poked her head out the door to look at the dining room. She noticed a blazing fire rushing towards her along the passage from the dining room and immediately alerted all the family members inside her room to start dashing out of the windows.

“We finally managed to break a window to Tebogo’s

room from out-side and dragged her out,” Tshif-hiwa explained. “We brought her to an open soccer ground outside our home and waited for an ambulance to arrive.”

Tshifhiwa, a cleaner at Biaba, suspects that her ex-lover might know something

about the fire, which consumed all her belongings and property, including furniture, utensils, clothes, food and ID books and birth certificates. “I had a pro-tection order against him, but he would always come to my house, using force,” she tells. “When I told the police that he was entering my house without my permission, they would say I shouldn’t worry about him as long as he was doing me no harm.”

Mphephu police’s spokesper-son W/O Lazarus Netshidzati said the police were investigat-ing a case of arson and five counts of attempted murder. “We haven’t made any arrests yet,” Netshidzati said. “But we hope to establish more informa-tion, which will then lead us to arrest the suspect or suspects.”

Tshiluwi Primary School’s principal, Ms Doris Rankhodo-do, mentioned that the young Tebogo was in a lot of pain. She said the girl was a top achiever in school who had won numerous awards. “She’s the cream of our school,” she said. Rankhododo said that the school would continue to visit Tebogo at the hospital and support her family materially since they now had nowhere else to stay.

Tebogo Mpai (12) sustained critical burns in a nighttime fire.

Angry women oppose bail after nurse attacks

Poor woman receives a brand new house

Ms Flora Sithi.

Woman picket outside court to oppose bail.

Angry protesters, mostly women, marched to the Vu-wani Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday to present a memo-randum in which they to op-pose the bail application of Edson Bila (42), who is facing a charge of attempted murder and robbery after two nurses were wounded and robbed at the Vyeboom clinic in Febru-ary.

The demonstration was joined by the ANC Vuwani branch, Civic Association and other women, led by Ward Councillor

Mathoma.Bila allegedly shot and injured

two nurses and robbed them of their cell phones during the incident. Afterward, he also allegedly left the scene in the vehicle of one of the nurses. He was arrested a day later at Basani village and the police found an unlicensed firearm, several hand-bags and cell phones with him.

The protesters marched along the road under heavy police es-cort. Singing slogans denouncing men who murder, rape and abuse children and woman as “beasts

who must rot in jail”, the women stomped their feet in toy-toyi style, with their hands in the air and displaying placards.

The deputy chairperson of the Vyeboom Civic, Ms Dolly Dobe-la, said the community was tired of endless and senseless murders. “We have buried many women over the years in this village and several died under mysterious circumstances. We are here to say ‘enough is enough’. Too much innocent blood has been shed and we want this to end immediately,” she said.

Charles Rihlapfu.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Robber sent to jailA fortnight ago, a 35-year-old man was sen-tenced in the Waterval Regional Court for robbing at least 10 women in May 2012.

The court heard that Charles Rihlapfu had moved around Elim, pretending to people that he was a manager of a company. In order for any job-seeker to get a job with him, Rihlapfu required them to provide him with a CV and a R750 fee. Some of these people became suspicious when time went by and no jobs had been created or offered to them.

They tried to phone Rihlapfu, but found that his phone usually did not ring. If his phone hap-pened to ring, Rihlapfu allegedly told them to be patient, as the company was trying to ensure good positions for them.

Some of the affected women finally decided that enough was enough and reported him to the police. Rihlapfu was arrested and charged with theft under false pretenses.

“He was found guilty and sentenced to eight years in jail,” said the spokesperson for the Water-val police, W/O Kedibone Mabatha. “This case is a stern warning to all criminals who walk around our policing area, swindling people out of their hard-earned money.”

From left to right during the handing over of the keys of the new house are Cllr Gideon, Mr Lara Mulaudzi (donor), Ms Annah Mudau (recipient), Mayor David Mutavhatsindi and Cllr Richard Mutavhatsindi.

An employed mother of five, Ms Anna Mudau of Ha-Mut-sha, who had been living in a shack has finally received her dream house. The handing over of the new house was held last Tuesday at Mutsha village.

She never in her wildest dreams thought of ever owning a decent house. She is now the proud own-er of a four-bedroomed house, donated by a Good Samaritan, Mr Lara Mulaudzi of Shotha Engineering, who volunteered to build the house.

Mulaudzi said he was touched while passing a dilapidated shack without a roof. “Here I witnessed poverty at its worst: a shack, sur-rounded by well-to-do houses,

with no food for the family,” he said.

“I am confident that our do-nation will encourage other businesses to put more effort into community development. The people on the ground need our assistance in terms of nation building and poverty allevia-tion,” he said.

“When Mulaudzi told me he was going to build me a house, I thought these were the same old promises they made which were not fulfilled. However, as things turned out when the material was brought to our yard, I thought I was dreaming,” said the ecstatic Anna Mudau.

She could not contain her

excitement. “I thank God for having en-

tered into the hearts of these people. They felt the pain I was feeling. The beautiful house has restored my dignity,” she said excitedly. “I am so happy and will now sleep in peace, knowing that I am sleeping in a safe envi-ronment where criminals cannot touch me,” said Ms Mudau.

Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi said government was faced with a mammoth task of building houses for the poorest of the poor. He said a collective effort between the municipality, communities and business could help ease the burden the govern-ment was facing.

Bus conductor jailed for helping border jumpers

Mella Da Fella releases his long-awaited album

Reward for info on killer(s)

Ms Rumbidzai Mayere was last seen on her way to town from Tshikota.

The family of Ms Rumbidzai Mayere (34) are looking for her after she was last seen walking to town from Tshikota in Makhado a few weeks ago.

Mayere is a well-known Zimba-bwean hawker at the local taxi ranks and streets where she sold boiled peanuts. According to her aunt, Ms Evelyn Munyanyiwa, Mayere was on her way to town, carrying a blue bucket containing peanuts, when she disappeared on 21 March in the morning.

The family have appealed to mem-bers of the community to help them trace their loved one. “We don’t remember her telling us that she had problems,” said Munyanyiwa. “We were on good speaking terms with her as a family, so we couldn’t say she ran away from home.”

The missing woman’s family say that they are unable to connect her disappearance with the idea that she might have gone home to Masvingo in Zimbabwe. “She left her passport and medication behind,” said her aunt.

Members of the family were com-pletely distraught when they received news on the street about a decompos-ing body of a woman discovered in the bushes around Tshikota.

Their fears were dispelled when they went to the police station to find out if the horrible discovery had anything to do with Mayere. “It was someone else’s corpse,” said a family member.

The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki, said that he could not establish whether a miss-ing person’s file has been opened or not, at the time of going to press.

Local hawker disappears

A 39-year-old Zimbabwean cross-border bus conductor was sentenced to eight months in jail for attempting to smuggle 10 undocumented people into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post.

George Chindani was convicted on his own plea of guilty to contravening a section of the Immigration Act (assisting border jumpers) by a local magistrate, Ms Gloria Takundwa. He was sentenced to eight months in jail, of which four months were conditionally suspended for five years. The remaining four months were further suspended on condition that he pay a fine of US$250.

The prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Mberesi, said that on 26 March, at around 23:00,

Chindani arrived at Beit Bridge Border Post in a cross-border bus belonging to his employer, Hawk Bus Company. The bus was carrying 10 undocumented pas-sengers, five adults and five minors, aged between seven months and 13 years.

The bus was stopped at the exit gate by police officers. As part of the border formalities, the passengers were asked to produce their travel documents and they failed to do so. They indicated that Chindani had offered to assist them il-legally across the border. Chindani was then arrested.

Meanwhile, two Beit Bridge men were each fined US$200 or one month in jail for trying to assist two border jumpers to cross into South Africa through Beit

Bridge Border Post. Peace Ishmael Dziva (29) and Sithandazile Mpunzi (29) were convicted on their own pleas of guilty to charges of assisting border jumpers by Magistrate Takundwa.

Mr Mberesi said that on 30 February, Dziva and Mpunzi connived and went to Beit Bridge Border Post where they met Tsepo Moyo and his son, Tapelo. The two did not have passports and they ap-proached Dziva and Mpunzi, who offered to assist them to cross into South Africa illegally for a R100 fee.

They were given the money before proceeding with the two undocumented travellers to the exit gate where they were intercepted by a police officer manning the gate, leading to their arrest.

A reward of R250 000 has been made available by the manage-ment of the South African Police Service in Limpopo for anyone with information that might lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of a person/s who brutally murdered a nine-year-old girl, Matshidzi Ramanyi, at Tshilungoma village outside Thohoyandou last month.

The girl went missing on 2 March this year and was found murdered

near the Tshamadzi rivulet at Tshi-longoma village on 8 March. Part of her skin had been removed, as well as her private parts. A suspect was arrested immediately thereafter but later released because he could not be linked to the case.

Anyone with information is re-quested to contact Captain Tshin-yadzo Ndou at 082 807 2666.

All information will be treated as confidential.

Tinyiko Gift Chirwa - better known on stage as Mella Da Fella - is currently one of the hottest properties in music circles.

Musina-born Tinyiko Gift Chirwa - better known on stage as Mella Da Fella - released his CD Bring It On last week, and already the title tune is heard on radios and in dance halls around Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Mella has, without a doubt, exploded onto the music scene and is taking it by storm!

This album is the culmination of many years of hard work in the music industry, with Mella certainly paying his dues. The end result is set to create a wave of excitement with all Afro-reggae-ragga dance hall music lovers. Mella calls his music Shangaana Muffin.

The album consists of 13 tight tracks with a strong Reggae-ragga dance-hall flavour, with a bit of hip-hop and afro beat, and sung in six languages, showing Mella’s diversity in music styles. “I wanted to include songs that try to convey a posi-tive message to everybody - young and old - about love, relationships and to show them that, even if they endure struggles like I have, they can still pick themselves up and move forward”, says Mella.

Growing up in the small town of Musina, Mella’s interest in music started with a local band called Tafara. Once he realised that he wasn’t getting the exposure he deserved, he travelled to Jozi in the hope of turning his dream into reality.

In Jozi, he worked as a session artist with dif-ferent musicians like Alec Khaoli and Chicco Twala, but he continued to dream of expressing his own unique talent and creativity. While doing jingles for television and radio stations in Gauteng and Limpopo, Mella started producing his own rhythms, beats and songs and participated in com-petitions such as Gumber Fire on SABC 1, in which he ended second. He released an album with the group Black Rockafellaz under Bula Music, but this was short-lived and Mella thought it best to work independently.

Mella was serious about playing an integral part in the music industry and to this end studied further and received a Diploma in the Business of Music. In 2003, he released a single, Returnof Da Buffalo Soldier, with Sony Columbia. In 2005, he released another Afro ragga-reggae album under

his own label, REDlion Production and Musiwa Entertainment.

The current album was recorded at Base 2 Base Studios, Solid Wave Entertainment and REDlion Produc-tion. It boasts hit songs like Bring it on, 2day is 2day, Dunu, Jah Jah Bless, Wun wanna wun wan, Khuluma, I’m

kreazy, Ntombozana, Nwanamani, Ndzaku rhandza, Bebe, Tshinela and Work it out.

On some of the tracks, he features music heavyweights like Mizo Phyll and Big Nuz. Mella is currently trav-eling around the country to promote his album.

Man´s good friend, the donkey, needs to help in getting water to rural communities, especially those living in Nkurhi and Shihosani village outside Malamulele. Entrepreneurs are using the donkey carts to collect water from the Nsami and Murhimbani dam, which they then sell to the local people. Even though a 25-litre container of water costs between R2 and R3, residents still have to boil the water before it can be used. The residents who cannot afford the water are forced to collect drinking water from nearby fountains.

Pastor Grace enters the political arena

Enos Mukhovhi (77) is madly in love with his wife Mpho (25).

“True love is something that everyone wants to feel ...” So says the 77-year-old Enos Mukhovhi of Tshififi village near Sibasa, who is madly in love with his 25-year-old sweetheart, Mpho Ndou. The couple are so madly in love that they are currently staying together and have recently registered their marriage with the Department of Home Affairs.

“Let them talk, but they will never take her love away from me. Mpho is the best gift that God has ever given me and she has everything that a man needs from a woman. She is the apple of my eye and I can’t live without her. Jealous people have tried to criticise our blossoming relationship, but they have never succeeded,” said the elderly Enos while he enjoys the beef stew and sorghum porridge Mpho prepared.

Enos said he was persuaded by his late wife, Tshavhungwe, to take a second, younger wife. “Before Tshivhungwe died in June 2011, she told me she was very old and could no longer afford to move around the house to do the daily chores. She then advised me to take a younger wife.”

He said he proposed to Mpho while Tshavhun-gwe was still alive, but the youngster turned his advances down. “I kept on trying several times, but after Tshavhungwe’s death, Mpho finally gave me her heart because she could see that I was very lonely. Thereafter, I started negotiating with her family and I paid lobola.”

Enos has nine children from his deceased wife, seven of whom are still alive and grown up while Mpho has a baby boy from a previous relation-ship. The couple are staunch members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC).

Enos says he is so close to his sweetheart that nothing can separate them. “Ours is the real, true love and we talk about everything. Talking is the

most important thing in true love, because when the partners talk, they can easily come up with solutions to every problem which they might have. We also care for each other dearly. When you are in love with someone, you make everything so that your partner can feel fine and loved.”

Enos says they sometimes have problems like any other couple, but they face them with courage and look for the best possible solutions to build up their relationship.

Mpho says she is very proud of her husband, despite the fact that she is 52 years younger than he is, and she will continue to love him until her last day on earth. “The fact that he is disabled has nothing to do with our love. He is full of tender care, loving and sweet.”

Enos became disabled in a rail accident in 1967. His leg and arm were totally sliced off by a speeding train.

“Let them talk, but I love my young bride”

Pastor Grace Ma-vhungu.

A well-known preacher and motivational speak-er in the Musina municipal area, Pastor Grace Mavhungu (42), was sworn in as the new African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) councillor for Musina Municipality. Mavhungu replaces Councillor Jenitta Banda, who died last month.

The down-to-earth pastor took the oath before Senior Magistrate Willem Guldenhuis during the recent council meeting which took place at the municipal council chamber, which was filled to capacity.

Widely known as Pastor Grace, Mavhungu says Christians have a role to play in maintaining the democracy of this country. “Christians should not only dominate in churches, they should also be part of the government structures since they are part of the democracy of this country. If God does have authority over the ones who are elected, then we should also play our part to make sure that people’s political wishes are maintained.”

Apart from involvement in politics, Mavhungu says, the most important thing that all Christians should do is to pray.

“We should also strive to use God’s word to set the standards of living and then be willing to share the truth with everyone around us. We need to gently instruct those around us in the truth of God’s word and how it can enhance and improve

our lives. We should vote with our faith as a guide on important issues.”

She says churches should provide a place for dialogue between individuals. “It should be a place where those who have Jesus as Lord in common can converse about touchy topics and walk away knowing that, whatever happens, God is the one who is really in power. Whether you like it or not, to be a citizen, with the freedoms we have, means responsibility to those freedoms. If we disagree with something, we need to vote to make our voices heard.”

Mavhungu says she will definitely contribute to the development of improved service delivery in Musina. “The fact that I served as ward com mittee member and my involvement with different developmental organizations is an ad-vantage to me as I know the communities that I’m going to serve. I will join hands with other councillors to fulfil our mandate of bringing a better life to all the people of Musina.”

Platinum Stars showed no mercy towards Black Leopards when they brutally walloped them 4-0 in their Absa Premiership League match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon. Unlike in their previous matches, where they never stopped fighting despite trailing, Leopards threw in the towel after conceding the first two goals.

The early stages of the game saw little goal mouth action as both sides struggled to create a path to the goals. The game was played mainly in the middle of the park as the defenders refused to see the opposition invading their territories.

The visitors from Limpopo came close to scoring in the 14th minute when Tiyani Mabunda’s free kick sailed over the cross bar. While Dikwena had more possession of the ball, Leopards looked to be more of a threat when pushing forward. Their Nigerian fast forward, Joshua Ojabe, unleashed from the edge of the box in the 24th minute, but the Stars’ acrobatic keeper, Siyabonga Mpontshane, rose to the occasion and palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

Stars took the lead in the 32nd minute. Sbusiso Msomi beat the Leopards keeper, Azwinndini Maphaha, with a left-foot strike from the 18-yard area. The home side appeared set to double their advantage ten minutes later, but Maphaha braved the shot and showed some lighting-quick reflexes to push the ball over the bar. Mogakolodi Ngele scored the second in the referee’s optional time to make it 2-0 at the break.

Leopards replaced Thomas Madimba with Raymond Monama earlier in the last half. The former Orlando Pirates dribbling wizard, Siphelele Mthembu, was on target in the 59th minute after an outstanding individual effort. The North West outfit scored the fourth via Patrick Malokase, who released a clinical, angled shot deep inside injury time.

Stars too bright for Black Leopards

With only 12 matches remaining before the league activities for the current season come to an end, Dynamos will soon need a miracle to move out of the National First Division League relegation zone. Their chances for escaping the chop at the end of the season were narrowed again when they lost 0-3 to Milano United at the Grassy Park Stadium in Cape Town last Saturday.

The result leaves the pride of Giyani rooted at the bottom of the log with eight points, nine behind the other relegation candidates, Roses United. Their defeat against Milano United was the first for Ri khomeni ri nga peli under the guidance of their new coach, Mr Shepherd Murape.

Witbank Spurs refused to die in front of their enthusiastic home supporters when they unexpect-edly held the log leaders, Thanda Royal Zulu, to a 1-1 draw at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. Thanda took the lead in the ninth minute via Law-rence Dlamini, who scored from a free kick. The hosts retaliated three minutes before the referee blew the final whistle.

Polokwane City used their home-ground advan-tage fruitfully when they crushed Sivutsa Stars 2-1 at the University of Limpopo Stadium. FCAK could not absorb the pressure from African Warriors, who doomed them 3-0 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State. Santos shared the glory with United FC, following their 2-2 draw at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Santos were leading 2-0 at the end of the first half. Blackburn Rovers held FC Cape Town to a 1-1 draw at the Mthatha Sta-dium in the Eastern Cape. Jomo Cosmos collected the maximum points at the expense of Vasco Da Gama, whom they beat 2-0, and Roses United lost 2-3 to Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Botshabelo Stadium in the Free State.

- Continues from p20“As sponsors, we are satisfied

with the overall running of the tournament, as we were there and enjoyed watching the games throughout the Easter weekend.”

Mamu’s chairperson, Mr Madonna Nthabalala, said that the tournament had gone well. “There were some challenges along the way, though,” he said.

“We have decided to invite the managers from all the teams who participated in the tournament to a post-mortem meeting next week, where we will address all these challenges.”

The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi, also graced the event on Sunday (23 March) when he handed the floating trophy to

the winning team. He reminded people that in South Africa foot-ball was not just a game, but that it had become a culture which could not be separated from the people who were part of it.

The president of the South African Football Association, Mr Kirsten Nematandani, was a guest of honour during the tour-nament, as had happened in 2012.

During the tournament, SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani (second from left) was presented with a token of appreciation. With Nematandani are (left to right) Victor Ramambila, Solani Chabalala and Donald Ratshilengo.

The champions received a floating trophy from the organisers and sponsors of the tournament. In the picture are (most front, left to right) Vusi Kaletsane, Marubini Mapholi, Rendani Galedzani, Shailo Shahid Yelukar and Maungedzo Nthabalala.

The annual Sinthumule Ku-tama Easter Tournament was marked by some controversial incidents this year and came under severe scrutiny from some team managers. A resi-dent of Muraleni village, Mr Seani Tshifura, is one of the managers who are not happy with the way his team was treated.

According to him, the team which they played against in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament, Ravele FC, fielded a defaulter.

According to the rules of the competition, only players who reside at a particular village are eligible to play for that village. In a strongly worded letter which Mr Tshifura wrote to Mirror, he

argues that Ravele FC fielded a player who allegedly stays at Tshikota Township.

Mr Tshifura further indicates that although they lodged a pro-test during the game, their protest was never heard. He said that after realising that the organis-ers were not requesting them to appear before the disciplinary committee, they were prompted to demand a refund of their R1 000 affiliation fee and a pro-test fee of R100.

He further states that it was only after they were refunded that they were told that they had been banned from the tournament for five years or had to pay a fine of R5 000. Mr Tshifura states that what the organisers did to them amounts to “imprisonment without trial”.

He further indicates that they are still willing to participate in the tournament in the coming years, provided the organisers lift the sanction.

When responding to Mr Tshifura’s allegations, the chair-man of the organising commit-tee, Mr Maungedzo Nthabalala, described what Mr Tshifura says as a bunch of lies. According to him, Mr Tshifura was part of the three-man delegation from Mu-raleni that attended the disciplin-ary committee hearing. He said that the committee had proved beyond doubt to Mr Tshifura and his entourage that the player in question was a bona fide resident of Ravele village.

The semi-final and final match-es were staged at the Vhuilafuri

Stadium on Sunday, March 31. The champions of the tourna-ment, Madabani FC, took home a cash prize of R8 000, a float-ing trophy and soccer kit. The runners-up, Ravele FC, were presented with a cash prize of R3 000 and a soccer kit, while the third- and fourth-placed teams, Maebane FC and Tshiozwi FC, each collected R1 500. Teams booted out of the tournament in the quarterfinal stage were each given a consolation prize of R750.

Some of the businesses which sponsored this year’s tournament include Premjee Wholesalers, Postnet, Riashuma Wedding and Decorations, Coca-Cola Fortune, Mphaphuli Attorneys and Xolani Business Enterprise.

Phungo All Stars will play their second league match in a row at home this weekend. They will fight for league points against the newly promoted Baobab Zero Fake in their SAFA Second Division League match at the Makhado Eltivillas grounds tomorrow afternoon.

Phungo All Stars disappointed their home supporters when they played to a goalless draw with The Dolphins at the same venue last Saturday. The fact that Phungo are still languishing at the bottom of the log makes tomorrow’s match against Zero Fake a “do-or-die” encounter. Zero Fake must keep a watchful eye on All Stars’ playmaker, Hulisani Mathugana, or else they will regret it.

In the other SAFA Second Divi-sion League matches that will also be played tomorrow afternoon, Rospa United will pay a visit to Magezi FC at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Sta-dium in Polokwane. The spirit is high

in the camp of Rospa United after they had crushed Lephalale Young Killers 4-0 at the University of Venda Stadium last Saturday.

Basel FC will undertake a journey to Mokopane. Their match against Mosesetjane All Stars will be played at the Mahwelereng Stadium.

Ray Pillars, who lost 0-4 to Basel FC at the Makwarela Stadium last Saturday, will host Giyani Hotspurs at the Seshego Stadium. Blue Rocks will play in front of their home crowd. They will entertain Modimolle Aces at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen.

In their Polokwane derby that will be staged at the Seshego Stadium, The Dolphins will lock horns with Mighty FC. Mighty must win the match in or-der to move out of the relegation zone. In the only match that will be played on Sunday, Winners Park will host Nobela All Stars at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane.

Powerline’s Jayso Maisha (left) tries to pass to Thabang Sithole.

Powerline’s goal scorers are (from left) Rudzani Nebulu, Tsepo Ragimana and Jayson Maisha (1).

Zoutpansberg Powerline were too strong for Tshikota Chelsea when they hammered them 4-1 in the Safa Vhembe SAB match played at the Madabani grounds on Sunday.

Chelsea had nobody to blame but themselves for the defeat. The Tshikota lads squandered numerous obvious chances in the first half.

The leading goal scorer, Hilton Tshivhula, could not live up to his reputation as he was contained by Thomas Machaba. Chester Murwan-thi and Thabang Sithole of Chelsea should have scored more than twice each, had it not been for the fact that it was not their day.

The Tshikota boys were matching their opponents pound for pound in the first half, but their original stamina faded as the going became tough. Tsepo Ragimana of Powerline was a

difficult man to mark. He eluded the Chelsea defence as he kept running from the onset.

Chelsea was the first to score in the 26th minute via Matha Ratshilaya, when he finish off a square ball from Faith Ratombo. Their celebration was cut short when Tsepo Ragimana equalised and caught keeper Daniel Mukwevho off guard. It was therefore not surprising that Tsepo Ragimana added another goal when he received a pass from Vusi Kaletsana seven minutes thereafter.

The halftime score was 2-1 in favour of Powerline.

Jayson Maisha increased the tally early in the second half with a blister-ing shot that beat the Chelsea keeper hands down. Rudzani Nebulu scored the final goal for Powerline in the 80th minute to take the score to 4-1.

Rendani Masindi of Stars in full control of the ball.

Not only did Mukula Avalon de-posit full points into their league account last Sunday, but they also registered a historic victory when they brutally walloped Makwarela Development Stars 6-1in their SAB League match at the refurbished Makwarela Stadium.

Avalon made their intentions clear from the first whistle. They scored two minutes into the game. Their captain, Lucky Netshifhefhe, forced his way through the defence of Stars and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

The goal was a morale booster to the players of Avalon. They increased the tally four minutes afterwards. Lucky Netshifhefhe was on target again, following a neat pass from Avhashoni Rabali.

Stars’ solitary goal came in the 16th minute. They were awarded a free kick after Musiiwa Magula was tackled from behind just outside

the penalty box. Tshililo Mufamadi scored from the free kick with a vol-ley. Avalon were leading 3-1 at the end of the first half.

Rotondwa Mbedzi beat the Stars’ keeper with a long-range volley early in the second half.

Avalon replaced Avhashoni Ra-bali and Eric Makhuvha with Martin Mafune and Ungedzani Khomola in the 54th minute. Martin Mafune of Avalon was reprimanded with a card for obstructing the Stars’ keeper, Dakalo Mukwevho, in the 67th min-ute. Mafune did not lose his fighting spirit, despite the warning. He scored three goals in quick succession. He was on target in the 70th minute, following a brilliant pass from Mpho “Gusheshe” Ramugondo. He beat the offside trap and scored his second goal and the fifth for his side. Mafune completed his hat trick in the dying minutes to bring the full-time score to 6-1.

Another home match for Stars

Dynamos will play two tricky National First Division League matches in the space of four days. They will host Jomo Cosmos at the Giyani Stadium tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). While Jomo Cosmos have nothing to lose in the match, the situation is totally dif-ferent with the team that was once the pride of Giyani.

Ri khomeni ri nga peli, as they are affectionately called, must win the match in order to enhance their chances of escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season.

They are currently lying at the bottom of the log. Their next match will be against Witbank Spurs, with whom they will lock horns at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank next Wednesday (April 17). It is the same Witbank Spurs with whom they played to a goalless draw in their first-round league match at the Giyani Stadium three weeks ago.

Dynamos’ newly appointed coach, Mr Shepherd Murape, is adamant that his side will soon move out of the relegation quagmire. Mr Murape took over from the former Platinum Stars mentor, Mr Owen da Gama, last month after a series of poor results.

In the other National First Division League matches that will also be played tomorrow afternoon, Mpuma-langa Black Aces will play against Polokwane City at the Themba Se-namela Stadium in Witbank. FC Cape Town will entertain Roses United at the NNK Stadium in Cape Town. The log leaders, Thanda Royal Zulu, have reason to believe that they will collect the maximum points at the expense of Milano United FC at the Richards Bay Stadium.

Sivutsa Stars will play against Witbank Spurs at the Kabokweni Sta-dium in Nelspruit. On Sunday, FCAK will host Blackburn Rovers at the Eldorado Park Stadium in Johannes-

burg. The other match that will be played next Wednesday will be be-tween Polokwane City and Thanda Royal Zulu at the University of Lim-popo Stadium.

Kgabo Mphela of Pillars in action after kicking the ball, while Lamola Mokeketwa of Basel intervenes from the side.

Basel FC give Ray Pillars a day to rememberTwo tough hurdles for DynamosBasel FC enhanced their chances of partaking in the promotional play-offs at the end of the season by crushing Ray Pillars 4-0 in their SAFA Second Division League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

Pillars did not pose any threat to the home side in the first half. In-stead, they played defensive football from the first blow of the whistle as if they were leading. Basel failed to capitalize on the setback and missed obvious scoring chances time after

time. They managed to score only one goal in the first half. The former Black Leopards fast forward, Walter Ramulondi, headed home in the 38th minute, following a neat pass from Lamola Mokeketwa. Basel introduced two new faces in the 50th minute. Goodman Dlangalala and Thabo Diale were replaced with Shonisani Rambebu and Robert Tshabedi respectively. The defence of Basel, which was marshalled by Tshifhiwa Mmbooi and Khaukanani Malwela, became more settled after the replacements.

The visitors from Polokwane effected the first change to their starting line-up in the 55th minute. Mokgolo Maphala gave way to Thabiso Motema. Louis Chauke scored Basel’s second goal in the 60th minute. He blasted in a rocket, following Mokeketwa Lamola’s square pass.

Mokeketwa was carried off the pitch two minutes later. He sustained an injury to the ankle and he was replaced with Godfrey Mahlala. The referee, Mr Martin Sivhada, warned Justice Ses-hibe of Pillars with a card, following a dangerous tackle on Walter Ramulondi in the 66th minute.

Sathege Matlou of Pillars was given his march-ing orders after tackling Louis Chauke from behind. Ramulondi scored his second goal and the third for his side in the 76th minute. As if that was not enough, Ramulondi was on target again in the 80th minute to complete his hat trick. He caught the Pillars keeper, Phuti Matlala, off guard with a volley.

Lindelani Mudau of United Brothers controls the ball.

In their SAB League match which was played at the University of Venda Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Gwamasenga United Brothers held the league title chasers, Univen FC, to a goalless draw. United Brothers dropped three points to Maweja Takers FC at the Gwamasenga grounds the previous day, following their 1-2 defeat.

Univen approached the game aggressively, with their midfielders creating some threatening moves from the middle of the park. The Univen keeper, Eugene Mbedzi, was on leave for the better part of the first half. His defence, which was marshalled by Eugene Mafukata and Nigel Thobejane, kept their territory clean.

United’s vastly experienced midfielder, Ntam-budzeni Mundalamo, was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He was engaged in a heated argument with the referee and ultimately the lone referee was prompted to silence him by flashing a yellow card.

Univen soon realised that it was not their day when they missed a fortune 16 minutes into the game. Their slender midfielder, Mashudu Radzilani, tried his luck from outside the penalty box. The keeper of United Brothers, Oupa Ram-buwana, stretched to the limit and palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

The Univen left back, Nigel Thobejane, was also booked towards the end of the first half. He kicked Lesley Khomola of United Brothers in the face. Thobejane sustained an injury to the ankle early in the last half and he was replaced with Emmanuel Magera. United Brothers were more defensive than offensive throughout the last stanza.

Black Leopards must collect the maxi-mum points against Ajax Cape Town if they are serious about escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season. They will meet in their Absa Premier-ship League match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane next Tuesday evening (April 16).

Black Leopards and Ajax are fight-ing for survival. They are lying in the second- and third-last position on the log respectively. Ajax have a match in hand, which gives them the advantage of jump-ing over Lidoda duvha on the log if they manage to win their outstanding match.

Leopards have recently relieved the team’s caretaker coach, Mr Abel Makhubela, of his duties and recalled

the Zimbabwean-born Mr Sunday Chid-zambwa. Mr Chidzambwa was promoted to the post of technical director after allegations of match fixing when he was the Zimbabwean national team coach way back in 2007. Chidzambwa was on the team’s technical bench when Leopards lost 0-4 to Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg last Sat-urday. Kaizer Chiefs will host Supersport United at the same venue the following day (Wednesday). In the other matches that will also be played on Wednesday evening, Mamelodi Sundowns will take on the University of Pretoria at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. The latter are still fresh from a 3-1 victory over Amazulu. Free State Stars will have a date with

Orlando Pirates at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State. Amazulu and Bloemfontein Celtic will fight for league points at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars will rub shoulders at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.

M a r t i t z b u r g United will host Golden Arrows at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pieter-maritzburg. Chip-pa United and Mo-roka Swallows will battle it out at the Phillipi Stadium in Cape Town.

Leopards’ head coach, Mr Sunday Chid zam bwa.

It’s do-or-die time for Black Leopards

Madabani win easter tournament

The Madabani soccer team were crowned champions in the Sinthumule-Kutama Easter Soccer Challenge for the second time in a row.

Joy and excitement spread through the Vhuilafuri stadium and finally found its rest in the hearts of Madabani soccer lovers, when the Madabani soccer team were announced as the champions during the Sinthumule-Kutama Easter Soccer Challenge a fortnight ago.

For the second time in a row, Madabani took the champions’ position, after beating Ravele 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. The two teams had drawn 0-0 during the final match.

The winning team’s manager, Mr David Ramarupi, said that words could not express the

extent of their joy. “We started preparing our-

selves for the tournament from December last year and kept telling ourselves that we would like to win,” said Ramarupi. “Now that we have been crowned champions the second time in a row, our joy is not small! This only shows that our boys are hard workers who are not lazy during training sessions.”

Madabani were awarded a cash prize of R8 000, a floating trophy, soccer kit, 15 bibs and 30 gold medals. Ravele, who came second in the tournament, received R3 000, a soccer kit and 30 silver medals. The third team

in the tournament, Tshiozwi, received R1 500 and 30 bronze medals. Maebane ended fourth and received R1 500.

One of the sponsors, Vho-Marubini Mapholi of Postnet Musina/Thohoyandou, spoke at length, pointing out that as sponsors they were happy to be part of the tournament, which is organised yearly by Mamu Com-munity Sports Development.

“We want to assure the organ-isers and the communities of Sin-thumule and Kutama that we will continue to help and assist where we can in terms of sponsorship,” Mapholi said.
