The Makhado Business Forum (MBF) and Maseakhole Constructability and Projects have donated a vehicle to the African National Congress’ Songozwi branch. The car will be used by the branch’s secretary, Mr Bethuel Rasesu, during the election campaigns. The forum approached Maseakhole, which then donated the vehicle. The chairperson of the MBF, Mr Dickson Khoza, said that the political organisation had liberated most business entities to conduct their businesses in Makhado. “As a democratic structure that guards the interests of all businesses (small, medium and macro enterprises) in this town, we declare our support to this organisation,” he said. Photographed last Friday in front of the donated vehicle were, from left to right, Mr Tshifhiwa Masiavhula (Maseakhole Constructability and Projects), Mr Bethuel Rasesu (ANC branch secretary), Mr Dickson Khoza (Makhado Business Forum) and Mr Owen Masiavhula.

R28 000 robbery case to resume this week

Two well-known PhalaPhala FM presenters, Jones “Jan-tibai” Netshipise and Jimmy “Da Scratcher” Netshilulu, will entertain music lovers during the Easter Battle of the DJs at Nkuzana (Madyisa) from

Friday to Sunday. The festival is sponsored by

well-known businesman Mr Dorgan Ndobe.

Some of the participants on Friday (18th) will be DJ Dankie from Thohoyandou, DJ Nyiko

from Hlanganani, DJ Cool Train and band from Gauteng. On Saturday, DJ Jones “Jantiba”, DJ Clive from Gauteng and DJ Cool Train will entertain the fans.

Sensational jazz will be on the menu for Sunday.

The trial in the infamous R28 000 robbery case resumed in the Sibasa Regional Court two weeks ago.

The two key witnesses, Ms Aluwani Mukwevho and Mrs Joyce Mukwevho, testified against two of the four accused in the case. The witnesses gave testimonies relating to the inci-dent which happened on the night of 3 October 2012, when male intruders invaded their home and assaulted them.

It was alleged in court that the first two accused, Freddy Mulovhedzi (55) and Lufuno Mavhunge (29) forcefully en-

tered the witnesses’ house on the night of the incident and demand-ed the women’s club money.

It was testifi ed that the two had assaulted the inhabitants with an iron rod. The two complainants, Aluwani and her mother, even-tually gave in as they felt great physical pain, and handed the intruders money.

The R28 000 belonged to the women’s club, of which Mukw-evho (senior) was the treasurer.

During his arrest, Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi (22) was found in possession of a mobile phone which was stolen from the com-plainant’s house, after the mobile

phone’s service provider had assisted the police with inves-tigations.

Fulufhelo claimed that the phone belonged to his father, Freddy Mulovhedzi.

The fourth accused, Ms Vhu-lahani Ndou (40), was later implicated in the case. She was a member of the women’s club.

All the accused still maintain a plea of not guilty.

The case was postponed to 17 April for the mobile phone’s service provider to also give tes-timony. All three accused are out on extended bail, while Freddy Mulovhedzi remains in custody.

Accused: Freddy Mu-lo vhedzi.

Accused: Ms Vhu la-hani Ndou.

“I saw death coming” - Elmon Tshikhudo

Local journalists under threat

“I was told that my days are numbered”

I cannot tell whether it was a coincidence or not.

I had just returned from Don-ald Fraser Hospital where I had covered a story of a livestock herder, Tenious Chihari, who had survived an attack by an angry leopard.

I was then asked to cover the protests at Univen. The protests were sparked by the death of a masters degree student, who died while waiting for an am-bulance from the campus clinic.

Before heading for the cam-pus, I tried on several occasions to call student leader Uhuru Mo-fokeng, but in vain. As it was a student protest, the right person to explain about the protest was the president of the SRC, but he ignored me and also insulted me for no apparent reason. When I arrived on campus, I tried call-ing him again, but he chose to ignore my calls.

Maybe it was just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I arrived just when the students were howling at the management who were trying to address them at the main gate. They were later escorted to their cars without addressing the students.

As I was taking photographs, a man came running to me and told me we should run away. Still confused and not knowing

what was actually going on, I let the man take me by the hand, while others tried to wrestle the camera from me. We ran as far as we could. Looking back, I saw a huge crowd of angry students, some holding sticks, some pelting us with stones. Some were shouting that I should be killed, with some say-ing that they wanted my camera.

Fearing that we might not make it away from the mob, the man took whatever I was holding and tried to calm the mob by telling them that he had taken my diary with my notes and my camera.

Two men unknown to me, who were parked not far from the gate, took me in the back of their bakkie and whisked me away. The angry students tore the sail that was at the back of the bakkie.

It was really a terrifying ex-perience. In a normal situation, I just know myself as a person who cannot run, but that day I outran the angry students. The experience has left a wound in my heart that will take a long time to heal. I have worked with Univen students for many years and I take them as my brothers and sisters.

I was so scared. I stared cer-tain death in the face and I can still see them coming at me like

a pack of wild dogs.It is part of the job. I have

seen so many dreadful scenes, and this happened just after I had interviewed a survivor who told me he had seen death but had fought back and survived.

With me it was a different story, because I did not know that I was under attack. I thank God for saving my life but a luta continua.

Elmon Tshikhudo, who became a victim of the protests at Univen last week.

The article that a Limpopo Mirror correspondent wrote two weeks ago may be the reason he has received sever-al threatening calls the past week. The unidentifi ed call-ers are seemingly upset with a story about a Makhado councillor who is being inves-tigated for the alleged illegal selling of houses for the poor in Tshikota.

Mr Kaizer Nengovhela re-ceived three calls the past week-end from callers who were threatening to kill him. Accord-ing to Nengovhela, he received the fi rst call last Friday evening. “The caller asked me why I wrote a story about another man’s child. The man asked me if I would support the family, since the man doesn’t have a job any more,” said Nengovhela.

On Saturday evening Nen-govhela received another call and this time he was told to look after himself. “When I answered the call, I was asked how I could be so happy while tarnishing someone’s child’s image. A woman’s voice warned me to look after myself,” he said.

On Sunday he received yet another anonymous phone call, and this time he was told that his days were numbered. Nen-govhela said that he explained to the caller that it was his job to report all news without fear

or favour. “If there are people threatening to kill us, how are we going to do our job?” he asked. Nengovhela has since laid charges of intimidation at the Tshilwavhusiku police station.

On Monday morning, Lim-popo Mirror’s newsroom came to a standstill when Cllr Itani Sikhwari, the DA’s PR coun-cillor, Cllr Bercie Jones and her spouse, Benny Jones, who is believed to be a member of the DA, visited the offi ce. Even though Sikhwari was not talk-ing, Cllr Bercie was criticising Nengovhela for allegedly imply-ing that they are corrupt. “If you think I am corrupt, why don’t you go to the police and report it? Why would anyone want to kill you?” said Bercie. She added that she was not afraid of any investigation. “My hands are clean,” she added.

Mr Benny told Nengovhela that there were people who had tarnished his image and his political career before, but he had never gone to the extent of threatening to kill them. He also emphasized that they had no reason to try and intimidate a journalist.

The article that appeared in the Limpopo Mirror two weeks ago focuses on the Hawks’ in-vestigation into the conduct of a former DA councillor, Itani

Sikhwari. It is alleged that Sikh-wari sold RDP houses meant for the poor in Tshikota.

Mr Anton van Zyl, manager of Zoutnet Publishers, said re-porters should not be subjected to threats and intimidation. “It is the reporter’s role to refl ect what is happening in the community. You do not break the mirror if you don’t like the image refl ect-ed,” he said.

According to Van Zyl, read-ers who are unhappy with the content of any article should contact him or the editor and discuss it. “If there are any factual inaccuracies, we must immediately rectify this,” he said. According to Van Zyl, reporters should not be blamed for refl ecting certain messages. “Reporters do not decide to investigate people; that is the role of the law enforcers. If the councillor is unhappy with the fact that he is being investigated, he must voice his opinion. He was given several opportunities to comment, but preferred not to,” said Van Zyl.

Two weeks ago, one of Lim-popo Mirror’s reporters, Elmon Tshikhudo, was assaulted by a group of angry students when he was covering a protest march at the University of Venda.

Tshikhudo laid a charge of assault at the Thohoyandou police station.

Lutendo Madume guilty of murder and kidnappingA 25-year-old man who made newspaper headlines after he had killed a Grade 10 pupil at his Tshik-warani home was found guilty in the Thohoyandou High Court on 10 April.

Acting Judge Jackson Mushasha found Lutendo Madume guilty on charges of kidnapping and murder.

During the trial it emerged that the accused had kidnapped Tuwani Portia Fhetani (20) on 8 January 2013 and murdered her the next day. “The accused tendered a plea of not guilty, saying that at the time of the crime his mind was not working correct-ly,” said Judge Mu-shasha when deliv-ering his verdict. Mushasha add-

ed that it was not true that Madume might have suffered from amnesia, because he remembered every detail leading to and following the murder.

It was clear to the judge that Ms Fhetani was no longer interested in a relationship with the accused. She tried to distance herself by visiting her aunt in Gauteng. However, the accused kept on threatening her, telling her he would kill her when she returned home.

A witness, Catherine, testi-fied that Madume had also

threatened her when speak-ing to her on the phone. The accused told her that if Fhetani did not return home, he would kill Cathe-rine, so he would get an op-

portunity to kill Fhetani also when she returned to attend

t o s o l v e t h e problem between him and Fhetani. Madume, how-ever, continued to abuse Fhetani telephonically, so she eventually approached the Tshilwavhusi-ku Magistrate’s

Court for help. Madume was sum-moned to appear at the court offi ce on 9 January, but this never happened, because he stabbed Fhetani earlier that morning.

Another state witness and also a friend of the deceased, Ndivhuwo, testified that the relationship be-tween Fhetani and the accused ended somewhere in November 2012. On 6 January she went to the deceased’s home. She stated that the deceased later got a telephone call from the accused, threatening her. He said he could do whatever he pleased to her. The following day Ndivhuwo got a call from Madume, who warned her to distance herself from the deceased because he (Madume) wanted to do something bad to the deceased.

Judge Mushasha summarised that Ndivhuwo accompanied the deceased to fetch her school results at the local school when the accused came and demanded that they go with him to Tshiungulela Secondary School. He bought a drink and later told Ndivhu-wo to go her own way as he walked away with the deceased. Ndivhuwo reportedly phoned the police and no-tifi ed them of the possible kidnapping.

The following morning, police offi cers arrived at Madume's house. Madume refused to open the door. Police officers then heard Tuwani screaming: “Mmawee! Yowee! U khou Mbulaya! (He’s killing me)”. When the police kicked the door open, Tuwani fell on her face. Mad-ume was still holding a blood-stained knife in his hand.

When questioned in court, Madume denied ever threatening Tuwani and

Catherine or ever calling Ndivhuwo. He also stated that he did not know headman Mahuwa.

Advocate Mbambadzeni Man-wadu, acting for the defence, request-ed the court to grant his client an opportunity to consult with a social worker and a psychologist for re-ports in mitigation of sentence. State advocate Ratshilumela Makhera and acting Judge Mushasha agreed, and the three parties fi nally settled on an-other date for sentencing. The matter was postponed to 23 May.

Traffic volumes to increase during Easter weekendEven before the up-coming Easter week-end, local roads have already claimed the life of one motorist, while others narrowly escaped death and se-rious injury.

On Saturday after-noon, 12 April, a truck driver escaped death when he lost control over his heavy vehicle while coming down the Soutpansberg mountain pass. Apparently the vehicle’s brakes failed, causing the truck to ac-

celerate and speed out of control past the Stubbs Street traffic circle on the N1 in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The accident happened at approxi-mately 14:00.

Witnesses of the accident recollect seeing anoth-er motorist, driving a Volkswagen Polo, waiting to cross the intersection. The driver of the Polo dodged the oncoming truck by a hair’s breadth. “We thought the person in the Polo was done for – he must have sped up very quickly when he saw the truck hurtling towards him,” recall Bonita Furstenburg, Dallien Viljoen and Luandi Smit, who witnessed the incident.

The truck driver did, however, manage not to hit the Polo, bringing the truck to a skidding halt several hundred metres from the traffic circle and sending its load of beans scattering over the N1. According to reports from local rescue workers, it took a clean-up crew several hours to clear the road again for traffic.

On Sunday, an unknown male was killed in a vehicle accident along the Waterpoort road, several kilometres from the Waterpoort/N1 intersection. More details about the accident were still forth-coming at the time of going to press.

Shortly before this accident, another truck, also travelling from Musina towards Makhado (Louis Trichardt), jack-knifed at the Waterpoort crossing. Fortunately, no one was injured and no other vehi-cles were involved.

These incidents leading up to Easter weekend are the reason why Limpopo traffic authorities are bracing themselves for a busy period, with traffic volumes expected to increase from Thursday.

The MEC for roads and transport, Mr Lehlog-onolo Masoga, has stated that traffic officers will be ready to deal with any incident during the weekend. Masoga officially unveiled the province’s 2014 Easter Arrive Alive campaign on Tuesday on the R37 near Polokwane. This year’s campaign goes under the theme “Celebrating 20 years of efficient, reliable and safe transport services”.

Roads in the province, especially the N1, R71 and smaller roads, experience huge traffic volumes during Easter. Therefore, emergency medical services from Vhembe will also be on standby. For assistance, the Makhado Fire Brigade can be contacted at Tel 015 516 0554/2, the call centre of the local emergency services at 015 516 2395 or the Makhado SAPS at 015 519 4300.

The truck came to a halt next to the N1, several metres away from the traffic circle at the Stubbs Street crossing. It is suspected that the brakes of the truck failed, causing the driver to lose control over the truck.

Opportunities for local modelsFirst phase of Masia Multi-Purpose centre openedLocal beauties will now have the opportunity to develop their modelling skills by none other than Miss Humanity South Africa 2014, Ms Katryn Barwise.

Katryn is also a former Miss Lim-popo. She started a youth develop-ment organisation, Limpopo Beauty Modeling Academy. This organisa-tion, which has its roots in Tzaneen, affords girls the opportunity to grow into top models in Limpopo. Her skills will now be also available to girls from the Soutpansberg region.

Having years of personal experi-ence in the beauty industry herself, Katryn personally trains prospective models to boost their self-confi-dence, develop their pub-lic-speaking skills and groom them into fearless, feminine young ladies.

Throughout this pro-cess, models will also get the opportunity to do paid modelling work for major designer brands to help them kick off their modelling career. As part of their training at the Limpopo Beauty Modeling Academy, girls will also be encouraged to become involved in community projects to help bring sustainability

to their community. Such projects will include involvement in victim drop-in centres, old-age homes or any other worthy institutions. “Lim-popo Beauty Modeling Academy promotes humanitarian causes, and all their models are advocates for bringing about positive change in the lives of those less privileged,” says Katryn.

Persons who would like to get involved with this youth develop-ment programme can contact Katryn at 078 371 0909 or via her website at www.limpopobeautymodeling.co.za. Limpopo Beauty Modeling Academy also has a Facebook page.

the official opening of Phase 1 of the project.

Community members from Masia and surrounding areas were overjoyed during the official opening of the first phase of the Masia Multi-Purpose Cen-tre. The multi-million-rand project will cover the construction of a library, a hall, theatre, computer centre, cultural village and sporting facilities.

The project started in April 2012 and was scheduled for completion in June 2013. Phase 1 was opened on April 8 this year.

Thovhele Vho-Nthumeni Masia said he was very excited about the commitment the Department of Rural Development

and Land Reform had made to their com-munity. He urged community members to refrain from sitting at home and drinking traditional beer the whole day. He en-couraged them to take part in communal activities.

The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, said the government was committed to pro-viding what it had promised to the people. Nkwinti said this formed part of the gov-ernment´s commitment to eradicating pov-erty. He said he had visited the Masia area to check if the ANC was really doing what it had promised the people. “The building

of the multi-purpose centre is proof that government is committed to delivering services to the people. Government has declared war on poverty,” he said.

Nkwinti said the partnership between the government and traditional leaders had to be strengthened. “The partnership will not be complete if we do not bring traditional leaders on board. I hope other traditional leaders will learn from this project. This development will create jobs, reduce poverty and crime. I am proud of you, Thovhele Masia, and your people. Keep it up,” said Nkwinti.

Makhado Child Protection Unit best in South AfricaThe Makhado (Louis Trichardt) Fam-ily Violence Children Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) unit came out tops in the whole of South Africa.

This unit, a special investigative unit of the Makhado SAPS, was voted the top investigative unit in the country during the police’s prestigious awards ceremo-ny in Pretoria at the end of March. The award was made in recognition of their dedication and hard work in helping to track down several serial rapists during 2012 and 2013. The local FCS unit is led by Capt Danelle Fourie.

One such a successful case was when her unit managed to link a serial rapist to nine other unsolved rape cases in and around the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area.

The members who helped to track down the Zimbabwean serial rapist were Capt Fourie, detective Lt Nkuna, detec-tive WO Masonono, WO Ligege, WO Ralebona, detective Const Rasilbai and Const Bologo. As part of their award, the

seven members involved also received a R15 000 reward from the Minister of Police.

In addition, WO Ligege was also sin-gled out by the Minister of Police, Nathi Nthethwa, for his excellent service in help-ing to secure five of the six life sentences for the rapist.

Another case that was also applauded for good police work was the case of serial rapist Michael Khorombi. This case was investigated by detective WO Fanie My-nhardt, who linked Khorombi by means of DNA to two more rape cases. At that stage, a Gauteng court had already handed down nine life sentences to Khorombi.

Locally, the FCS unit had also been applauded for arresting a child rapist. This accused, Hetekani Loyd Mabudza, received a life sentence for terrorizing the communities of the Waterval and Tshilwavhusiku areas.

Most recently, the FCS unit made local news headlines for their investigation of the infamous Doris Mthembi, who

received a 10 year prison sentence. After an extended trial for perjury, in which Mthembi opened a false case of rape against her ex-husband, Mr Goddard Mugwena, she was convicted in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court. The verdict was made despite numerous complaints that Mthembi had lodged against the FCS and the officers instrumental in the case.

“The unit relied heavily on DNA samples, cellular phone data analysis and confessions from suspects and corrobora-tion from witnesses,” said Fourie. “This excellence award was made possible by their hard work and dedication.”

Fourie also expressed her gratitude to-wards all the state prosecutors for not only ensuring convictions, but also for assisting with legal advice to ensure that a docket is made ready for trial. She also thanked all the local charity organisations for their donations towards the FCS.

“These donations of toys, food and even water tanks are what enable us to do our very best.”

Pictured with their award is the best investigative team in South Africa - the FCS unit of the Makhado SAPS. In front, from left to right, are WO Mpfuni Mpho, detective Lt Thomas Nkuna, team commander Capt Danelle Fourie and WO Thomas Masonono. At the back are WO Fanie Mynhardt, WO Charles Ralebona, WO Samuel Thovhakale, detective Const Bologo Luvhani and WO Daniel Ligege.

Gift Maringa is the type of musician who is patient and waits for the right time to strike. It took him eight years to prepare for his debut album, Avha Nne.

He is the new kid on the block and serious music lovers cannot ignore him. The title track of the album which is now selling well is Avha Nne and this song has become like a national anthem. Hardly a function goes by without the song being played. The album has catapulted Maringa to instant stardom and is receiving massive airplay, beating the old folks in the industry. Almost overnight this artist has become much-sought-after property for live interviews by the different radio stations.

The multi-talented 34-year-old artist from Shayandima also boasts a BSc degree in com-puter science as well as several other diplomas. He said he was not surprised by the success of his debut six-track album as he had worked on the album for a long time. “What I realised is that there are no shortcuts in life and that perseverance is the mother of success.” he said. Maringa, however, did not enter the music in-dustry through a back door. With two of his uncles, Chris-topher and Abel Mukwevho, being pioneers in the music industry, it was natural that the music

bug would bite him. Maringa had to work hard to prove to himself that he could do it. His big break came when his cousin, famous reggae star Colbert Mukwevho, roped him in as a vocalist for one of his albums. “I realised that I had the talent, which only needed to be polished here and there. I started rehearsing and composing songs, which took me a long time,” he said. He said many people had asked him about the type of music he played, with some saying it was Afro pop and other names. “After careful thought, I have decided to call it Muringa music, but whatever name you can give it would be okay,” he said. “Many musicians kill their music by not giving themselves time to work on their songs before releasing them. They succumb to the pressure of their fans and release half-cooked products which make their fans forget them very fast. I am that type of artist who believes in hard work. I worked hard to produce this album and I am still going to give myself time to work on my follow-up album, no matter how long it takes.

I am going to give my fans the best,” he said. Maringa recently performed live at the revered Bassline in Jozi, which is no mean feat for a rookie in the industry.

The album was recorded at Burning Shack Studios. It was produced by well-known bassist and engineer Mulalo Mukwevho and is published by Mbila En-tertainment. Those having diffi culties in getting copies

can phone him at 078 294 6352.

Mmbengwa Watson Mbulaheni (61) is an ac-complished poet who doesn’t fi nd it diffi cult to dabble in teaching, farming and writing at one and the same time in his life.

Limpopo Mirror visited Mbulaheni at his Khubvi home, near Thohoyandou, and spent a day with him, listening to words of wisdom from the literary sage.

“Any persons who attempt to write must fi rst tell themselves that they are writing for themselves,” he said. “If you love yourself and don’t want to read shoddy literature, you won’t compromise your writing. Then the next person will also fi nd your writing very interesting and full of life.”

He said the biggest challenge for writers in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s was

securing a publishing deal. “There was a lack of pub-lishers and your manuscript could lie in the publisher’s drawer for a year before you could hear from them, or else you got no response at

all,” he shared. He made a break

into author-ship when

Sasabo-

na accepted his poetry manuscript Mushengeli in 1989. “It felt like I could fl y to kiss the sky,” he recalled.

“My mother couldn’t read, but I showed her the acceptance letter from my publisher and said, ‘See, Mma, I am getting published!’” This author has not only been writing and getting his work published and prescribed for schools, but is a respected manuscript assessor. “I evaluated manu-scripts for Via Africa and Shutter and Shooter for about 13 years,” he said. He mentored young men such as Maitele Nevhutalu and Mavumpfarele Lugisani, who went on to become great writers who produced a large volume of literary work in Tshivenda, and won numerous awards. Mbulaheni was dealt a hard blow when thieves gained access to his house through a window and stole the laptop which contained his unpublished works. “They walked away with lots of my property,” he said. “Crime has gotten out of hand in this country.”

He is trying to put together the stolen writings from scratch. “This is not an easy task; it strains my soul,” he said.

“I feel that I am deeply indebted to the readers of literature.”

He writes against corruption and maladminis-tration in the higher offi ces. In an article published in the then Venda Mirror of 12 July 1991, he states: “I will write for the people. I will pray for them. I will also cry for them.”

His published books include, among others, Mufandilani, Mushengeli, Lwendo Lwa Mutshin-yali, Mukosi wa Shango and Mutondi. He has been a school principal at Thenzheni Primary for

the 27 years.

The two young men, Nyiko Shibambu and Phanuel Dhlamini, at the old Xingwedzi College of Education.

The soccer field.

“Change Xingwedzi Multi-purpose Centre into FET”“The South African govern-ment should stop making us feel ashamed to say the words ‘Our government’”.

Phanuel Dhlamini, represent-ative of the Malamulele youth, said those words while showing Limpopo Mirror’s journalist the old Xingwedzi College of Educa-tion and the bushy playgrounds in Madonsi village, Malamulele.

“We want the government to quickly help us change the so-called Xingwedzi Multi-pur-pose Centre into a further-edu-cation-and-training institution (FET),” said Dhlamini. “It will be easier for young people to get education close to home, because some of them cannot afford to pay for transport and accommo-dation at distant FETs.”

According to Dhlamini, the facilities of the old college are being used for accommodation for police officers, student nurses from other colleges and various other people, and the centre is now known as the entrance to the Xingwedzi Education Multi-pur-pose Centre. “This new name is the opposite of what it means,” he said.

During 2011 and 2012, the youth, represented by Dhlamini, wrote a letter highlighting the challenges facing their villages and the youth to Thulamela Mu-nicipality.

“Last year, the Department of Agriculture gave us the go-ahead to use the market and show grounds, because the place is no longer of any use to them since it is broken and dilapidated,” he said. After getting permission to use the market and show grounds, the youth then wrote letters dated 30 June and 8 August 2013 to Thulamela Municipality and the Department of Sports, Art and Culture, requesting them to clear the bushes and grade the sport fields.

“They haven’t responded yet. All they do is just put their stamps on our applications and hand us copies,” he said.

Dhlamini said that there were tennis, basketball and volleyball courts in Malamulele, but they were all broken and damaged. “They need to be repaired and the Thulamela Municipality is ignor-ing us and our pleas,” he stated. “Now we want the municipality to tell us where to get help to renovate those facilities and use them. Believe me, those facilities produced great talent way back from 1998 to 2000.”

People who made use of those very facilities include Stella Mathebula and Adolf Maboya, who were later appointed pro-vincial and national basketball coaches. “Their players com-peted in the USA, Canada and

Australia,” Dhlamini illustrated. “This only tells us that there could be more great talent in this area if we were given the relevant support.” Dhlamini said that the government had misinterpreted the demonstration and march which happened in Malamulele in August last year and said it “was influenced by elements of tribalism”. “We know nothing about tribalism here in Malam-ulele – political leaders always say things to suit themselves and the national media,” he said. “Both VhaVenda and VaXonga live in peace and harmony here; we work and own businesses together.”

Dhlamini said that the youth of Malamulele were only de-manding equal services from the government.

The spokesperson for Thu-lamela Municipality, Mr Nndwa-mato Tshiila, said that he did not understand why it could seem so difficult for the sport grounds to be graded.

He advised the Malamulele youth to contact him directly, so that he could take them to the rel-evant office within the Thulamela Municipality.

“They will get helped,” he said. “They must also bring the said letters as proof to show that the municipality hadn’t been attending to their requests.”

Thursday, 17 April will see South Africa sign a memoran-dum of understanding (MoU) with Mozambique, which will assist in the curbing of rhino poaching.

Minister of Water and En-vironmental Affairs Ms Edna Molewa will meet with the Mo-zambican Minister of Tourism, Carvalho Muária, at the Skukuza camp of the Kruger National Park (KNP) to sign the MoU in the field of Biodiversity, Conserva-tion and Management.

Such an agreement is crucial, said the minister in a press release

last Wednesday, if the scourge of rhino poaching within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP) is taken into consider-ation. “Escalating incidences of poaching have become a major challenge within the GLTP,” said minister Molewa.

SANParks welcomed the sign-ing of the agreement, which will allow KNP rangers to pursue poachers even if they cross the border. “The agreement will [also] ensure that measures which we are putting on this side of the fence in South Africa are also put in Mozambique,” said SANParks

spokesperson Rey Thakhuli. In addition, the agreement will

also assist in addressing other wildlife crimes. This will include illegal hunters who cross the bor-der to hunt for meat or protected animals that they harvest for muti purposes.

As of 9 April, on the day minister Molewa announced the upcoming signing of the MoU, the total number of rhino poached since the beginning of the year reached 277. Of this total, 166 rhinos were killed within the KNP and 34 across the Limpopo province.

In a strategic move to bring Government closer to the peo-ple, the Musina Local Munic-ipality has successfully started its initiative of taking council meetings to different wards.

This was ascertained by the large numbers of local commu-nity members who witnessed the council sitting at Renaissance High School ground last week. The area falls under ward 5 of Musina Municipality.

Mayor Carol Phiri says a mandate of the municipality as local government is to make sure that there is a good working relationship with all the stake-holders. “Inclusive government

refers to all the different types of communication that need to take place in our societies if sustain-able democratic development is to occur. This means that every community member has a role to play in the decision-making processes of the municipality. Community members can do this through taking part in municipal public participation programmes, attending IDP meetings, attend-ing ward committee meetings and engaging their ward councilors in all community-development initiatives within their wards. All these are mixed together to breed decisions that all of us own.”

She says the municipality

always includes its stakeholders when taking decisions to ensure a smooth link between planning and delivery through a detailed and concrete project design pro-cess. “This gives all community members their appropriate role in the process, thereby contributing to a smooth planning-implemen-tation link. Integration of their input ensures that the results of our planning are compliant with the vision, objectives, strategies and resources that we have.

She encourages community members to participate in all municipal meetings to make sure that they are part of the planning and implementation processes.

New infrastructure for Dzata Secondary In a period of t12 months, Dzata Secondary School’s infrastructure is expected to meet the minimum required standards and norms for basic education. Construction work was set to begin last Wednesday when Cubic Profes-sional Consultants handed over the site to the contractor.

The contractor is going to build 24 new classes, an administration block, a nutrition centre and a parking lot. During the 12-month construction period, the contractor plans to demolish 12 of the old classrooms and renovate eight old classes.

Mr Mubeen Mohammed, principal agent from Cubic Professional Consultants, said the school was one of 202 schools in the province benefi ting from Independent Development Trust (IDT) funding. The project forms part of a government initiative to ensure that school buildings are meeting the minimum standards and norms of education.

Through this initiative, schools are rebuilt or rehabilitated.

“This is one of the schools which are rehabili-tated in the province. Other schools are completely demolished and rebuilt,” said Mr Mohammed. During the handover of the site to the contractor, Mr Mohammed said the contractor should not compromise the safety of the school. He said it should be indicated that there was a construction site to ensure that pupils were learning in a secure environment.

“There will be monthly project meetings and unskilled labourers are usually sourced from the community,” he said.

The school’s principal, Mrs Bridget Sinyosi, said the school was in dire need of extra classes and an administration block. “Our admin block couldn’t accommodate all the teachers and some of us had to use classrooms as their offi ces. Our classes are overcrowded,” she said.

The school governing body chairperson, Mr Fan-ie Siema, commended the Department of Education for driving the project. “This is a relief; we didn’t know how to resolve the problem of the shortage of classes,” he said.

Stakeholders photographed during the handover meeting held last Wednesday at Dzata Secondary School.

Photographed during the handover meeting are, from left to right, Mr JJ Stein (project manager), Mr Frans Maruma (contractor) from Mthombeni Building Construction and Services, Mrs Bridget Sinyosi (school principal) and Mr Mubeen Mohammed (principal agent from Cubic Professional Consultants).

Mukhanyo Distance inviteslocal theological students

CPF and police join hands in Nzhelele

Mukhanyo Distance invites pro-spective theology students at Mat-sila Village (near Nkuzana) and the surrounding areas to enroll for a certificate or diploma course in theology.

Mukhanyo Distance enables stu-dents to receive relevant, high-quali-ty, holistic, affordable in-service dis-tance training in theology. It provides Bible-based training opportunities and facilities to church leaders for church and community development in Africa.

The course also develops church leadership and administrative skills in order to inspire kingdom vision and to support the growth and development of churches.

An important aspect is to equip leaders, office bearers and members of churches to understand and apply the Bible correctly in their own en-vironment.

Mukhanyo Distance Masakona has been running for three years. On 10 May, they will move to a more centrally located venue,

Theocentric College, at Matsila

Village. Students are welcome to enroll

either for the whole course (28 mod-ules) or a single module.

A module on the New Testament will start on Saturday, 7 May, at 9:30 at Theocentric College. This interesting module will concentrate on the human authors of the Bible, what happened to the original Bible, textual criticism and the authority of the Bible.

The cost involved is R200 per mod-ule. A number of bursaries are also available which will enable students to study for R100 per module, most probably the best offer in the country to study a course of such high quality. This amount includes all study ma-terial. Students follow by DVD the same classes that full-time Mukhanyo students attend.

Distance students are assisted by well-trained facilitators.

For more information, contact Dr Edmund de Beer (083 3911 065), Rev Norman Ligege (083 618 6419), Rev Nathaniel Muhadi (083 557 2367) or Rev Robert Makungo (082 441 4687).

As commercial robberies con-tinue in Nzhelele, members of the community policing forum (CPF) had teamed up with the police to eradicate the scourge. This follows a record number of nine incidents which were reported last month (March).

Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati con-firmed the incidents and said that the suspects were nowhere to be

found. He said that Somali-run shops seemed to be easy targets. “Whilst we are searching for the suspects, we are appealing to shop owners to close as early as 18:00. Most incidents happen after this time,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of the CPF, Mr Lucas Mutsila, insisted that most shop owners were not abiding to the closing time set by the police. “We have

established that after 18:00, some shop owners close the main doors to their shops and sell through the window, hence they are still being robbed by unknown sus-pects,” he said.

To end the scourge and to en-sure that suspects end up behind bars, the CPF in the Mphephu policing area had appointed sec-tor policing members to patrol the area in the evening.

Police warn publicof street muggersMugging and pickpocketing are becoming com-mon occurrences in the Thohoyandou policing area. Police are warning commuters, especially those who travel during the early hours and late hours, to be cautious.

As winter approaches, it gets dark early and most people travel to their homes in rural areas late at night. Perpetrators target those commuters at the bus stops and along the route when they go home. “We are appealing to members of the public to be cautious,” said Thohoyandou cluster police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo.

He said most victims were robbed of their phones and money. He added that when people were travelling at night, they should put their phones on vibration, so they would not be easy targets. “When suspects hear phones ringing, they easily approach their victims, knowing that they will steal their phones and money,” he added.

New R3,5m water project for MatsilaThe Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, offi-cially opened a new water pro-ject at Matsila last Thursday.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Co-operative and Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Andries Nel, Thovhele Vho-Nthumeni Masia and many chiefs. The R3,5 million project created 60 jobs for local people. Ma-budafhasi said the project was her department’s intervention

to provide water to commu-nities that did not have access to water.

She mentioned that one of the greatest challenges for the government was to provide basic services and infrastructure to all South Africans.

“Besides the obvious benefits of receiving clean, safe water and sanitation, the project also aims to improve the quality of life,” she said.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila said his people received their human

rights. “When I pleaded with the

Department of Water and En-vironmental Affairs to help my people, the situation was so bad that we sometimes had no access to water.”

He added that the community used to collect water from the rivers as there is no water in the area. “The time of community members travelling long dis-tances to rivers to collect water is now a thing of the past,” he said.

A routine police inspection led to the arrest of two Zimbabwean men in Musina last Thursday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the men were found in possession of explosives. The 33-year-old Victor Chaikambure and 34-year-old Nicholas Mhlanga appeared in the Messina Magistrate’s Court the following day and were charged with the illegal possession of explosives. “Upon searching the vehicle, police found eight capped fuse detonators and eight blasting cartridges stashed behind the driver’s seat,” said Mulaudzi. Chikambure was driving at the time and allegedly claimed ownership of the explosives. Both men will remain in custody until their next court appearance this Thursday (17th), when they are expected to bring a formal bail application.

Public outcry after “maiming”of trees Vhamusanda Vho-Tshisudzungwane buriedA new and different, more pos-itive approach to the pruning of trees under electricity lines in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) can be expected now and in future.

Makhado’s municipal manag-er, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, reacted swiftly to a public outcry at the beginning of the bush-clearing operation which got underway towards the end of last week in Munnik and Anderson Street in town.

Teams acting on behalf of the municipality’s electricity depart-

ment attacked all trees in the im-mediate proximity of the town’s electricity lines along the streets, indiscriminately ripping off branches and stripping branches and trunks, leaving a grotesque, spooky lane of splintered and torn-away tree trunks.

Members of the public ex-pressed outrage in telephone calls to this newspaper about the ob-viously unprofessional treatment of the trees.

Mutshinyali was informed of this. His attention was drawn to the fact that the bush-clearing

operation in town was degen-erating into an unacceptable, massive maiming and destruction of the town’s trees. Even trees which were originally plant-ed by the municipality on the pavements were simply cut off and destroyed. He received the news with equal concern and immediately took positive action. He reacted by expressing his ap-preciation for the public concern for the town’s environment and immediately ordered a rethink and replanning of this operation necessary to safeguard the elec-

Traditional dances such as Tshikona and Uluvha were part of the activities at Zwie-ndeulu zwa Tshitanzhe (the sacred burial place of chiefs), when traditional leaders and communities paid their last respects to the late Vhamu-sanda Vho-Nyilenyile Tsh-isudzungwane of Tshitanzhe village outside Mutale last Friday evening.

In the Vhavenda culture, the Tshikona dance symbolize traditional culture and respect, and when a chief is crowned and during his burial, there should be such dances.

During the event, Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe, one of the senior traditional leaders in the Vhembe region, urged unity among the traditional

leaders and communities to bring development into villages. “We want other traditional lead-ers to emulate what Vhamusan-da Vho-Tshisudzungwane has done in the Tshitanzhe commu-nities, uniting with his subjects to develop the area. Tshisudzu-ngwane was a traditional leader who loved his people and other traditional leaders around,” said Thovhele Nethengwe. Vhamusanda Vho-Nyilenyile Tshisudzungwane (80) died on 31 March after a short illness. He was made traditional lead-er in 1975 and succeeded his father, the late Vhamusanda Vho-Jim Tshisudzungwane. He was one of the chiefs who fell under the jurisdiction of Thovhele Vudzidzhena Neth-engwe in the Thengwe Tribal

Authority. He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Church of Portland Oregon, based in Shakadza outside Mutale. He left his wife, Vho-Muofhe Tsh-isudzungwane, six children and 14 grandchildren.

tricity network.The municipal i ty

published a notice last week that the electricity supply will be inter-rupted from 1 April to 31 October this year on Tuesdays and Thurs-days, from 08:00 to 16:00, in pre-notified street blocks to enable municipal employees to do bush clearing of the overhead low-voltage power lines in town. It states that all high-risk vegetation up to three metres from the centre of the power line will be removed and that the clearing of the vegetation is aimed at improving the quali-ty of the supply and services, as well as to maintain street lighting to promote the general security of residents.

What started as bush clearing degenerated into massive maiming and destruction of trees in Anderson and Munnik Street in Makhado (Louis Trichrdt) last week.

A 23-year-old Zimbabwean man, George Sithole, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with an option to pay a R300 000 fine for smuggling illegal cigarettes.

Sithole and his co-accused, Tauya Tarusarira (34), appeared in the Musina

Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday. During the trial, Tarusarira was acquitted.

The two were arrested a week before, after they were found travelling from Zimbabwe in a truck with two goods con-tainers. The police stopped and searched the containers. There were 29 865 cartons

of cigarettes stowed away behind the other goods inside the containers.

“The estimated value of the goods was R5.9 million,” said the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede. “Sithole was the driver of the truck.”

During the launch of the tournament are, from left to right, Messrs Lesley Marandela, Elvis Phathela (media liaison officer of Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport Development), Joe Mulelu (manager of Zwitani Driving School), Tshifhiwa Lirabela and Ntakuseni Netshiongolwe.

The Sinthumule/Kutama Commu-nity Sport Development received a sponsorship from Zwiitani Driving School to host an Easter soccer

tournament. The tournament will start on Friday

(18th) and the final will be played on Monday at the grounds of Ravele

Black Dragons. Sixteen teams will participate in the tournament.

During the recent launch of the tournament, Mr Joe Mulelu, manager

of Zwitani Driving School, said the sponsorship was in appreciation of the support they were getting from the local communities.

He indicated that they would continue to sponsor the compe-tition in coming years and congratulated the Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport De-velopment organisation for unearthing the talent of the youth around the area.

Mr Elvis “Parks” Phathela, PRO of Sin-thumule/Kutama Com-munity Sport Develop-ment, stated that it was important that future stars' talent be identified at grassroots level. He applauded the sponsors for helping to identify the talent of the region's youth and added that the youth of the region should be proud of their talent.

The winner of the competition will re-ceive R5 000, a floating trophy, new soccer kit and medals, while the runners-up will receive R3 000, a soccer kit and silver medals. The team ending in third position will pocket R1 300 and bronze medals, while the fourth prize is R1 000. The four teams beaten in the quarterfi-nal will receive R250 each.

Muraleni United and Mpheni Home Defenders in a 2-2 draw

Ndaedzo Phalanndwa of Defenders and Rulani Maringa fight for the ball.

Duncan Maringa of United controls the high ball, while Aaron Lisoga waits for any mistake.

Ndaedzo Phalandwa of Defenders hooks the ball while Rulani Maringa tries to intercept.

Muraleni United held the current log leaders of the MMK Insurance Brokers league, Mpheni Home De-fenders, to a 2-all draw in a match played on Sunday at the Muraleni grounds.

The match was characterised by numerous futile attempts at scoring. United squandered three opportuni-ties within the first seven minutes. Rendani “Balo” Mathavha of United scored his team’s first goal with a marvellous shot.

Defenders did not lose their fighting spir-it, despite conceding this early goal. Their midfielders continued to distribute some telling passes from the mid-dle of the park in their search for the equaliser. The half-time score was still 1-0 in favour of United.

United then took the game to the visitors. They found the equalis-er through their captain, Moses Lisoga. He blast-ed in a rocket from the edge of the box. United continued to dominate the proceedings as the game progressed. They were denied several sure goals by the Defenders’ acrobatic keeper.

Ndaedzo Mphaland-wa of Defenders forced his way through the de-fence of the opponents and released a rocket from outside the box to

make the score 2-1. As if he was a spectator, Kevin

Salani watched the ball hit the net without making any attempt at stop-ping it.

The visiting team enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were thwarted by the solid defence of Stars.

Tshilidzi Muthabi of United scored from a free kick late in the match to even the scores out.

Leopards to watch as other NFD teams fight for points

Goloza festival at Dengedza

Artists too clever for Stars

While the other Na-tional First Division League teams will be fighting for points this weekend, Black Leopards will be out of action. Their match against United FC, which was original-ly scheduled for this weekend, was played at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday. Lidoda Duvha lost 0-1.

Black Leopards will undoubtedly wish that three teams, Baroka FC, Milano United and Jomo Cosmos, should lose their weekend matches.

The three teams, together with Lidoda Duvha, are in close con-tention for places in the promotional play-offs. The league champions will gain automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership League, while teams that finish in the second and third place, together with the second-last team in the Absa Premiership Di-vision, will meet in the promotional play-offs.

The best team in the promotional play-offs will also gain promotion to the elite league. Chip-pa United need just a draw in their remaining four matches to gain automatic promotion. The Cape Town side are likely to be crowned the league champions after their match against Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium on Sunday.

Baroka will fly to Cape Town, where

they will lock horns with Santos at the Ath-lone Stadium in the only match that will be played today (Friday). Santos are out of both the league champion-ship and the promotion-al play-offs race, while Baroka will spare no effort.

Tomorrow will see Jomo Cosmos play against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Umhlatuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Losing the match may mean that Jomo will not take part in the playoffs.

Blackburn Rovers will entertain African Warriors at the Sugar Ray Zulu Stadium in Durban.

Vasco da Gama and Roses United will do battle at the Parow Park Stadium and Milano United will meet the Maluti FET College at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

United Artists continued to pave their way up by beating Thembalu-vhilo Seven Stars 2-0 in their MMK Funeral Services League match at the Lufule grounds on Sunday.

Seven Stars were lucky not to con-cede more goals during the first half. Their defenders spent the better part of the first half running for cover. It was their keeper, Chanah Matshete, who denied United Artists numerous sure goals. Matshete advanced out of the penalty area to block Thomas Makhubele’s way. At that stage, Makhubele was on the brink of un-leashing.

Seven Stars were the first to effect a change to their starting line-up. Their technical staff was forced to replace the injured Sylvester Ndou with Khuliso Bulannga in the 25th minute.

The home side was awarded a free kick in the 34th minute. Mashudu Tshitahe beat the keeper with a half-volley from the set piece. As if

they were the leaders, Seven Stars continued to play defensive football, even after conceding a goal.

The Artists’ overlapping defender, Witness Mudologi, forced his way through the defence of Seven Stars and suffered the pain of watching his close-range attempt missing the target by inches.

Seven Stars started to play like a team in the last half, but it was diffi-cult for them to find their way through the solid defence of Artists.

United Artists increased the margin in the 67th minute. Mushe Luvhimbi blasted in a rocket, following a bril-liant pass by Thomas Makhubele. Artists replaced Mashudu Tshitahe and Samuel Mathebula with Dakalo Ravhura and Tshifhiwa Munyai re-spectively. Seven Stars were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute after Ngaene Nemushungwa was given his marching orders for swearing at the referee.

Khuliso Bulannga of Seven Stars controls the ball after winning it from Mushe Luvhimbi.

Khuliso Bulannga of Seven Stars makes a sharp turn with the ball, while Mushe Luvhimbi of Artists is on his heels.

Samuel Mathebula of United Artists kicks the ball.

The Goloza music festival will take place at Stekerivier in Dengedza on Saturday.

Musicians that will participate in the event include Ben Mayengane, Prince Rangani, Zozo and Sengere Beat, Comrade Shigevenga, Mafen-

ya Brothers, Percy Mfana, Doctor Sithole, Sasekisa, Boti Ready, Peter Magholongondo and many more.

The event will start at 10:00 and will be sponsored by businessman Mr Goloza Makhubele.

Dakalo Nwanamidwa of Arsenal (left) and Lesedi Kapinga attack the ball.

Benny’s Care continued to drop points when they lost 0-2 to Madombidzha Arsenal in an MMK Insurance Brokers match at Tshiozwi on Sunday.

The students from the local soccer academy were lucky not to concede half a dozen of goals during the first half, as they were out of touch. Arsenal missed two clear chances in the first few minutes.

Ritshidze Matodzi shot wide from close range after receiving a neat pass from Dakalo Nwa-

namidwa in the fourth minute. Three minutes later, Boti Mot-alana released aimlessly from outside the box, much to the disappointment of the team’s supporters.

Arsenal finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. It was their right flank, Eric Sefu-laro, who made things happen. His long-range ground cutter left Benny’s keeper, Hlulani Nohunyula, flat-footed.

Both sides effected two changes in the last half. The

replacements worked against the visitors, as they played the last stanza with their backs against the wall.

The match stopped for almost five minutes when an official of Arsenal went onto the pitch, accusing the referee of favour-itism.

The host team lost cohesion and Arsenal capitalised on this by scoring their second goal three minutes before the final whistle, when Ritshidze Ma-todzi found the back of the net.

Benny’s Care drop more league points

One league point for Rospa United FC

Black Leopards out of the title race

Rospa United grabbed one league point against Mighty FC at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium last Friday evening. They played to a 2-2 draw in their Safa Second Division League match. Thabo “Figo” Papo, scored a brace for United in the match.

Mighty's equalizer was scored on the stroke of full time from the penalty spot

The log leaders, Blue Rocks FC, have reason to panic. They could not absorb the pressure from Bellevue Winners Park and lost 0-2. Joe Express lost 0-1 to Ray Pillars.

Lephalale Young Killers de-posited a full compliment of points in their match against Dynamos. They scored two early goals and Dynamos managed to reduce the deficit by one in the

dying minutes. The other title chasers, Dolphins FC, disap-pointed their home fans. They lost 0-2 to Magezi FC.

Giyani Hotspurs fought hard to earn a point against Mosesetjane All Stars when they played to a 2-2 draw. Joel Maake and Eric Kekana scored for Great North FC when they beat Winners Park 2-0 at the University of Lim-popo’s Oscar Mphetha Stadium.

Leopards’ head coach, Mr Kostadin Papic.

Black Leopards are out of the league title race after they lost their match against United FC at the Giyani Stadium.

The Thohoyandou outfit are in the second spot with 44 points, 10 behind the log leaders, Chippa United.

Even if they manage to win their remaining three league matches, Leopards will be a point behind Chippa United.

Leopards’ head coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, is still optimistic that his side will gain promotion to the Absa Premiership Divi-sion, although they had failed to gain automatic promotion. He said that their focus and last hope were on the promotional playoffs. The teams that will finish in the second and third position on the log, together with the second-last team in the Absa Premiership, will play in the platinum play-offs at the end of the season.

The best team in the platinum play-offs will also be promoted to the elite league. Black Leopards will play their three remain-ing matches away from home. Their remain-ing fixtures are against Milano U n i t e d , F C C a p e T o w n and Jomo Cos-mos.

C h i p p a Un i t ed wi l l also play their r e m a i n i n g matches away f rom home. T h e C a p e Town side will play against Witbank Spurs, Santos, United FC and Milano United. Other teams which

still stand a chance of taking part in the promotional play-offs are Baroka FC and Milano United. The last league matches will be played on Sunday, May 11.

Busy weekend for Second Division teams

Teams ready for Easter Sports Challenge

Teams affiliated to the Limpopo stream of the Safa Second Division will play two matches this weekend. The first matches will be played tomorrow, while others will be staged on Monday, April 21.

Tomorrow will see Rospa United host Giyani Hotspurs at the University of Venda Stadium.

The two teams shared the spoils with their opponents last weekend. After dropping points earlier this season, the coach of Rospa, Mr Benjamin Mhlaba, has finally found a winning combination. Hotspurs played to a 2-2 draw with Moseset-jane All Stars, while Ro-spa United held Mighty FC to a 2-2 draw.

Rospa United will pin their hopes on Veli-le “Berbeto” Mdaka and Kenneth “Mabena” Lesia for goals, while the captain, Tshifhiwa Mmboi, will be marshal-ing the defence. Mose-setjane will host Great North FC, while the Dolphins will lock horns with Winners Park at the

Mahwelereng Stadium. Magezi FC will play in front of their home crowd when they host Joe’s Express at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium. The spirit is high in the camp of

Magezi after they beat The Dolphins 2-0 last weekend.

Phungo All Stars will travel to Seshe-go for their match against Ray Pillars. Basel FC must win their match against Bellevue Winners Park in order to enhance their chances of moving out

of the relegation zone. Basel are lan-guishing at the bottom of the log. Blue Rocks will take on Lephalale

Young Killers at the Nkowankowa Stadium. The match between Dyna-mos and Modimolle Aces will be

played at the Burgersdorp Artificial Turf Stadium. Monday’s fixtures are: Bellevue Winners Park vs Ray Pillars, Joe Ex-press vs Winners Park, Modimolle Aces vs Blue Rocks, Lephalale Young Killers vs Basel, Phungo All Stars vs Magezi, The Dolphins vs Mosesetjane All Stars, Great North vs Rospa United and Giyani Hotspurs vs Mighty FC.Tshifhiwa Mmboi of Rospa United.

Mr Amos Mpofu of Midoroni was the lucky winner in the Makhado SuperSpar and Pieman competition. He received his prize, a bicycle, last Thursday. Photographed during the handing-over function were, from left to right, Aluwani Mukondeleli, Amos Mpofu, Emmanuel Mathega and Charless Ahonolu.

The launch and toss for the annual Sinthumule Kutama Easter Sports Challenge was held at Premjee & Son Cash and Carry on Saturday and 12 villages qualified to play in the tournament. The tournament will start on Good Friday (today) and the finals will take place on Sunday.

The Sinthumule teams will play at the Ravele Highlanders Grounds on Friday: The fixtures are Ramahantsha vs Madabani (09:00); Tshiozwi vs Gogobole (11:00); Ravele vs Madombidzha (13:00). The three losing teams will enter into a toss to deter-mine which two teams will play against each other at 15:00.

The Kutama matches on Fri-day will take place at the Midor-oni Real Hearts grounds and the fixtures are Manavhela vs Mado-donga (09:00); Zamenkomste vs Maebane (11:00) and Midoroni vs Makhitha (13:00). The three losing teams will also enter into a toss to determine which two

teams will play against each at 15:00.

The quarterfinal matches will take place on Saturday at 09:00, while the semi-finals and final are set for Sunday at the Vhuilafuri Stadium at Madabani, with the first match starting at 08:00.

The tournament is organised annually by Mamu Community Sports Development. Businesses such as, among others, Premjee & Son Cash and Carry, Hyundai, PostNET Makhado, Coca Cola and TD Mphaphuli Attorneys are sponsoring the tournament.

The head of technical matters and coaching at the Makhado Local Football Association, Mr Scara Tshigomana, said that the association was giving its full support to the organisers of the Sinthumule Kutama Easter Sports Challenge.

“We will provide our trained, qualified referees for the games and will also provide the disci-plinary committee to settle any possible disputes.” He added that

it is very confusing to have more than one soccer tournament dur-ing Easter, because the organisers eventually fought for players and sponsors.

“We will meet with all organ-isers to make sure that different dates or long weekends on the calender are used and not just Easter,” he said. “We need to clear up this confusion.”

According to Mamu Commu-nity Sport Development PRO and general secretary Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, the champions will walk away with R8 000, a trophy and soccer jerseys. “The runners-up will get R4 000 and soccer kit, while the third and fourth teams will receive R1 500 each,” said Mamugudubi.

Mamugudubi added that teams finishing from fifth to eighth will each get R750, while the ninth to 12th positions will each receive R500. “We are looking forward to enjoyable matches with all the teams and the communities,” he said.

The sponsors, team managers and community representatives met at Premjee & Son Cash and Carry for the launch.

Photographed during the toss are (from left to right) Messrs Joe Molepo, Mzansi (Makhado FM sport presenter), Chester Malotsha and Scara Tshigomana.

Oh, so cruel!Football proved once more to be a cruel sport when Black Leopards, who dom-inated the whole game, suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of United FC in their National First Division League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

As if they were going to bury the visi-tors alive, Lidoda Duvha invaded United’s territory from the fi rst whistle, but their strikers, David Zulu and Rendani Ndou, were both unlucky.

It was in the 11th minute that the home side missed their fi rst fortune. Leonard Ntshangase unleashed a volley from outside the box. The keeper of United, Xolani Ngcobo, reacted like a well-oiled machine to execute a brilliant save. David Zulu could not believe his eyes moments thereafter. His close-range ground cutter went inches wide.

Realizing that Black Leopards were all over them, the visitors abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back and relied on counter-attacks. It worked for them as they managed to score the all-important goal in the 24th minute. Their captain, Edward Williams, headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Sibusiso Masina.

United nearly increased the margin in the 28th minute. They were awarded a penalty after the Leopards’ keeper, Jacob Mokhasi, kicked Thabo Gouwe inside the box. Edward Williams caused an upset by shooting wide.

Rendani Ndou was brought down with-in the box three minutes before the half-time whistle and the Grahamstown-born referee, Mr Lwandile Mfi ki, awarded a

penalty to Leopards. David Zulu shot straight to the keeper, who palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

Ndou sustained an injury during the incident and he was replaced with Sipha-mandla Sangweni.

The Leopards centre back, Moses Ramodumo, was taken off the pitch on a stretcher with a knee injury. He was replaced with Karabo Tsepe. The keeper of United was saved numerous sure goals in the last 20 minutes of the game.
