    Packet Pick UpParticipants in Saturday’s eventsare encouraged to pick up their racepackets Friday at the Prayers fromMaria Health & Fitness Expo. Thoseparticipating in the Challenge Serieswill only receive one bib. This must beworn for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s

    events in order to record participant’sresults and for medals to be awarded.

    MedalsParticipants in the 5K and 8K willreceive their medals immediatelyafter completing their race. Thoseparticipating in the Challenge Serieswill receive a total of three medals.

     The first medal will be given toparticipants immediately after theycomplete their event on Saturday, andthe second medal will be given uponcompletion of their event on Sunday.In order to receive their third medal,participants will need to go to theChallenge Series tent at the finish linearea. Please refer to the Start/Finish

    Map for the location of this tent.

    Water Stops There will be three water stops alongthe 5K and 8K courses, including onenear Herman Avenue, one on Lake Avenue and another at the finish line.

    Color-Coded Directional Signs To make course navigation as simpleas possible, each race has its owncolor. These assigned colors will bepresent on the respective directional

    signage along the course.5K information will be GOLD;8K information will be PURPLE.

    Kids’ Run - 11:00 am The Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Kids’Run kicks off at 11:00 am in theLower Park area of Edgewater Park.Race day registration is available at9:30 am at the park for a cost of$12 per child. Participants receivea t-shirt and medal.

    Start times are staggered based onage and will begin at 11:00 am.Each age group will wait in a groupuntil they are called to the start line.

    ChronoTrack Timing SystemRunners will again be using the B-Tagdisposable bib ChronoTrack TimingSystem for accurate timing and scoringfor runners. The timing system has

    nothing to do with your shoe! TheChronoTrack system allows raceorganizers to print an integrated taginto the bib for each participant,encoding the runner’s bib numberinto the tag’s “chip.” All you need todo is wear your bib appropriately andyour time will be kept.

    Walking Divisions There are walking divisions for themarathon, half marathon and 10K.In order to compete in the walkingdivisions, you will be expected to walkthe entire distance; completion of thecourse is on the honor system. The topfive male and female finishers of eachdivision will receive an award. If you win

    an award and did not walk the entireroute, you will be expected to informthe race officials and move into therunning division.

    Restrooms100 porta-johns will be strategicallylocated at various points along thecourse near water stops. There will bean additional 150 restrooms near thestart and finish of the race, includingsome inside the south entrance ofQuicken Loans Arena.

    Water StopsWater, PowerAde, petroleum jelly andband-aids will be available at 18 aidstations along the marathon route, 7 onthe half marathon route and 3 along the10K route (count includes finish line).Honey Stinger will provide energy gelnear mile 8, 15 and 20. A medical tentwill be available at every water stop.

    Health & Fitness Expo All participants are required topick up their packets and bibson Friday or Saturday at the

    Health and Fitness Expo presented by Prayers From Maria Children’sGlioma Cancer Foundation. Late registration or packetpick-up will not be available onSunday morning.

    Color-Coded MileMarkersMile markers also reflectour color-coding system.Marathoners shouldlook for BLUE; HalfMarathoners for RED;10K participants shouldfollow the GREEN signs.

    Finish LineRunners should check time on digitalclocks and continue moving as quicklyas possible to water, food and medaltables. Please don’t linger in the finishline area, as it can get quite congested.

    Marathon, Half Marathon &10K Race Notes

    Course Closing TimeMarathon participants will be officiallytimed for seven hours and halfmarathon participants for four hours

    from the start time, and course serviceswill be provided for runners maintainingthis pace (approximately 16 minutesper mile). After the majority of runnershave reached the finish line, policemay determine for safety reasons thatthe remaining participants use thesidewalks. For your own safety, pleaseobey all signage and traffic control

    instructions. Closed streets will begin toopen to traffic at 1:00 pm.

    PLEASE NOTE: Only registered runners/ walkers will be permitted on the course.No bicycles or other wheeled vehicles

     are permitted.

    Changing RacesIf you are pre-registered for one of thethree events (Marathon, Half Marathon,10K) and wish to change events, youmust notify race organizers at theregistration table at the Health andFitness Expo presented by PrayersFrom Maria Children’s Glioma CancerFoundation at the Huntington Convention

    Center of Cleveland, 300 Lakeside Ave.,Cleveland OH 44113, Friday or Saturdayduring registration hours.

    PLEASE NOTE: Runners will be charged aflat switching fee of $20, and if upgrading,the difference in fees as well. If you run

     a race for which you are not officially registered, your results may be disqualified.

    If the race you wish to switch to is soldout, you will not be able to change races,

     as we will not have enough medals and shirts for the participants.

    USATF Drug Testing

     Athletes who participate in thiscompetition may be subject to formaldrug testing in accordance with USATFrules and IAAF Rule 144. Athletes foundpositive for banned substances or whorefuse to be tested, will be disqualifiedfrom this event and will lose eligibilityfor further competitions. Someprescription and over-the-counter

    medications contain bannedsubstances. Information regardingdrugs and drug testing may beobtained by calling the USOC Hotlineat 1-800-233-0393.

    Race Day Parking All participants MUST be downtown before 6 am, when many of the roads

    Backpack & Bag Policy

    Backpacks and bags will not beallowed at the Health and FitnessExpo presented by Prayers From

    Maria Children’s Glioma CancerFoundation. Bags and backpacksare strongly discouraged at theStart/Finish areas on race day.For participants, clear gear checkbags will be provided and thosemust be used for gear check onrace day. Spectators are askedto travel lightly as well. Those

    with diaper bags, purses andother items should note thattheir bags could be searched inthe vicinity of the start and finishlines. Any unattended bags aresubject to search and removalfrom the premises.

    Secured Gear Check Runners will be able to store their gearat a gear check drop off area locatedconveniently near the start line alongHuron Road, please refer to the Start/ Finish Line Map in this document. Bagswill be moved to the finish line area forgear check pick up after the race. Clear

    bags will be provided at the Expo andon race day. Only these bags will bepermitted. Runners are responsible forlabeling their gear with their name andrace number. The Rite Aid ClevelandMarathon is not responsible for any lostor stolen items. Runners who store theirgear will do so at their own risk.

    Pasta PartyParticipants and their families canenjoy a pre-race pasta dinner. TheHyatt Regency will be serving the pastadinner in the Arcade at 420 Superior Ave., from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Runnersmay choose from an assortment ofpasta, salads and beverages. Ticketscan be purchased at the Expo Friday

    and Saturday and at the door. Costis $22 for adults and $15 for kids12 and under.

    Lost and Found The Lost and Found will be locatedat the Information Booth at Mall C,near Lakeside.

    Merchandise on SaleRite Aid Cleveland Marathonmerchandise is on sale at the Expoand at the finish line on race day.Choose from a variety of specialrace merchandise from Nike.

    Race Day Preparation and Routine:

    1. Maintain your usual routine. Raceday is not the ideal time to make asignificant change in diet, shoe wearor warm-up routine.

    2. There is no need to eat excessiveamounts of carbohydrates the nightbefore the race as it could lead tostomach upset. A moderate meal istypically all that is needed.

    3. Avoid fatty foods and stick to foodsyou are familiar with.

    4. Ingesting carbohydrate gels ordrinks during a race may improveperformance.

    5. Pay attention to the weather forecast.Dress appropriately for race day toprevent heat-related illness or dress inlayers that can be removed for rainy orcolder weather race conditions.

    6. Hydrate throughout the race. Drink tothirst with water or electrolyte drinks.

     Avoid excessive water intake to preventhyponatremia (or low blood sodium),which can be dangerous.

    7. Warm up before the race with a light jog and stop during the race to stretchif you feel muscle tightness startingto develop.

    8. Maintain your desired race pace toavoid overexertion. Medical tents

    and medical personnel will be visiblethroughout the race course.

    9. Ask for help from any official marathonor medical personnel if you havequestions.

      Enjoy the race!

    Warning signs to be aware of:

    If you experience these symptoms or anyother health issues concerning to you,

    please stop at the closest aid station(located at every water stop) for evaluationand assistance.

    1. Chest pain or shortness of breath.

    2. Nausea, vomiting, excessive fatigue,feeling faint, muscle cramps or severeheadache.

    3. Blisters or chafing.

    4. If stretching does not relieve cramps,stop at the aid stations.

    5. Cramping or muscle tightness.

    The finish!When you finish the run, keep walkingas you cool down; it prevents painfulcramping.

    Prize Money Guidelines

    1. An athlete can be awarded prize money in only onecategory.

    2. Prize money winners and elite athletes cannot qualify forage division awards.

    3. If a runner places in two prize money categories of equalvalue, prestige takes precedence. (Example: If runnerqualifies 3rd in 10K and as Top Ohioan, he or she wouldbe awarded 3rd place in 10K.)

    4. Cash awards are based on gun time not chip time.

    5. Runners must be officially registered for an event in orderto qualify for any awards or cash prizes.
