and timing always exquisite, her stagepresence always overdone with sharp pre-cision and wit, and her brassy look in anyshow a gift of love and wacky lyricism withlots of baubles, bangles and beads with abody full of glitter. So, so Noo Awleens.

Avenue Q
Avenue Q was a very entertain-ing musical brought to theMahalia Jackson Theatre via
Work Light Productions. The show hasbouncy, and or lyrical music, by RobertLopez and Jeff Marx. Some people haveclaimed to find many elements from themusical scores from Jim Henson’s MuppetShow and Sesame Street. Whatever theinspiration, the music was played with asharp precise sound by the Avenue QBand under the direction of Michael
McCassey, and the script by Jeff Whittywas charming. The lyrics were also wittyand fit the moment(s) with precision.
Yes, this was a puppet show but thankthe gods, NOT A CHILDREN’S PUPPETSHOW. No whiney brats in the audiencefor this show.
The very adult book by Jeff Whitneywas not what one might have seen eonsago on our towns Miss Muffin Show. Not atall. (Although two puppets banging eachother on stage with wild abandon wouldhave added a little salt and pepper to hershow, which was often boring to the toddlerset I’m told.) So maybe a revival, with adultupdates) of an old local favorite like thatcould come along, since kids see this“effing” stuff on computers all the timeanyway. I’m told...
However this lovely show, set in anouter borough of New York City, had aspart of its life-lessons plot had: puppet boymeets puppet girl; loses puppet girl, findspuppet girl again, and all end up together- happily ever after. Of course everythingin between (including the outrageouslyfunny “first night f—” of boy puppet and girlpuppet, skinny arms and legs flying aboutlike stork parts on a hot griddle) filled outthe clever show with lots of stage businessand Trekie Monster, a Cookie Monsterlook alike, who sings one of the mostpopular songs in the musical about per-sonal computers and the Internet “whichare made for watching porn and nothingelse!” (Actually this is fact as much of webbased technology such as secure pay-ments and web-streaming are products ofthe market driven desire for adult enter-tainment safely delivered to the privacy of
