Corpus Cristi

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The new name for this feast, long known as Cor-pus Christi, now “The Body and Blood of Christ”, points to an important recovery of Com-munion for the shared chalice, the Precious Blood, in the Roman Catholic liturgy. For many centuries, only the priest received from the chalice. Now, over the last forty years, all are encouraged to ‘take’ the chalice. Eucharist is ‘eating’ and ‘drinking’!

Some important meanings surface when we drink from the common cup, ‘the cup of salvation’, such as our desire to banquet at the one table, and our willingness to participate in the pouring out of Christ’s love. Bread is the staff of life, eaten by ne-cessity even in times of pain, Wine, on the other hand, is the mark of festivity, a pledge of joy, a sign of unity between the Last Supper, our altar and the banquet feast of heaven. In the Gospel today, Je-sus speaks of the pouring out of his blood, and his offer of a cup of blessing to be shared as a sign of his love. There is no better response than ‘to take and eat’ and ‘to take and drink’!

Immediately after ordination Father Brian served in the Diocese of Kitui, Kenya, from 1972 to 1979.

Happy 40-year Anniversary Father Brian!
