    Biggest AHR Expo Yet

CHICAGOChicago has always beenthe site o big AHR Expos, and this yearsShow was the largest and best attended inthe Shows 82-year history.

Final results show that 57,727 peopleattended the Show. This included a record39,844 attendees and 17,883 exhibitor

personnel. The attendee record was about5% higher than the registered attendanceat the 2008 Show in New York City.

Net exhibit space also was a recordwith 428,884 t2, which is 9.85 acres(38 845 m2/4 hectares) o exhibits. Thisis 5% larger than the previous record setin 2006 in Chicago.

Exposition Company (IEC), attributedthe records in part to the many new en-ergy-ecient technologies and productsin the marketplace, as well as pent-updemand or new equipment.

We also hope this is an indication thatthe economy is on the upswing and will

continue to improve, he said.Products, not records, were on the

minds o attendees, and there was moreon the foor than could be absorbed in thethree-day event.

Brothers Matt and Teddy Lech o NewJersey were among the thousands wait-ing or the Show to open on Mondaymorning.

Were here to see everything, I meaneverything, said Matt Lech. We planto stay all three days so we dont missanything, added Teddy Lech.

Both said they that were interested inheat pump technology and other productsthat provide eciency.

Our customers are educated now, andthis is what they want, said Teddy Lech.

The show has been outstanding or usthis year, said Mark Handzel, director omarketing or Xylem RCW. This is thebest show that we have.

Intelli-Hood by MelinkIs Product o the YearThe Intelli-Hood kitchen ventilation control by Melink

was named the Product o the Year at the InnovationAwards ceremony at the 2012 AHR Expo. The product was one o 10 products selected to receive In-

novation Awards in various industry-related categories. TheMelink product was the winner in the Ventilation category. The product reduces the exhaust and makeup an speeds

during idle, non-cooking conditions, yielding an energy sav-ings o up to 90% and conditioned air savings o up to 50%.

I am surprised to receive the award, and very honored, said Melink engineering manager Bryan Miller, who acceptedthe award. Energy eciency and sustainability permeates

through [Melink] and that spirit is shown in this product. The Innovation Awards have been a highlight o the last10 AHR Expos.

This Show [AHR Expo] is the place that people in theindustry can go to see the latest, the best, the most innova-tive products, said Clay Stevens, president o InternationalExposition Company, which manages AHR Expo. Its ap-propriate that we honor the best o the best, but these awardsrefect the entire Show.

Proceeds rom entry ees rom the 2012 AHR Expo Inno-vation Awards competition have been donated to Metropoli-tan Family Services, a more than 150-year-old organizationthat provides services and counseling or amilies in needin the Chicago area. The Innovation Awards are cosponsored by ASHRAE,

the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Rerigeration Institute(AHRI) and IEC.

International ExhibitorsGrowing Part o ShowCHICAGOA record 422 international exhibitors partici-pated in this years AHR Expo, continuing a trend o growinginternational participation, both in companies exhibiting andinternational attendees. The previous exhibitor record was 400set in 2006 in Chicago.

International attendance also has been increasing. This yearsShow had 6,508 international visitors, slightly less than the re-cord 8,072 international visitors at the Las Vegas Show in 2011.

I think the Show in general is becoming better known as

a world event, said Clay Stevens, president o InternationalExposition Company.

International exhibitors came rom greater distances or manyo the same reasons that domestic rms attend AHR Expo: todisplay their products, to actually make sales and to connectsynergistically with other companies in their industries. Forsome international companies, however, there was an additionalreason: to announce Were here.

An example was KU Solar, which was created via a merger oKloben, Italys largest manuacturer o solar thermal equipment, and Universal, one o Italys largest solar integration companies.

The new company exhibited at AHR Expo to announce its inten-

tion to distribute solar HVAC systems in the U.S. The technologyis widespread in Europe, but America remains largely untapped. The new company introduced a scalable product line o pack-

aged systems and components, with units ranging in size rom 3

to 20 tons. The solar HVAC systems use solar thermal collectorswhich are designed to take energy rom the sun and produce acooling eect in the summer and a heating eect in the winter.

Our goal is to introduce this kind o product that in Europeand Italy are almost a consolidated marketsolar cooling, KUSolar COO Massimo Galli told ASHRAE Journal. And now we

are trying to understand i the U.S. is the same kind o market.SKY CPC 58 solar collectors or orced circulation hot water

heating systems are made o a series o doubled-walled boro-silicate glass pipes, welded at the end. A vacuum is inducedbetween the two glass walls, and the internal wall is coatedwith a recycled multilayer metallic selective material whichmaximizes the absorption o the suns energy. http://tinyurl.com/88ay7o2

Galli said winter temperatures in northern Italy, near theAlps mountain range, are commonly rom 5F to 15F (2.7Cto 8.3C). Very much like Chicago. So, the AHR Expos lo-cation served as an ideal locale or the company to introduce

    its products.

This expectation is being ueled in part because AHRI has addeda Product Perormance Certication Program or VRF manu-acturers, said Teddy Hwang, executive vice president, globalsales and marketing, and Kevin McNamara, vice president ocommercial air conditioning.

I see this as a turning point in the industry, said McNamara. This is a perormance-based certication done by a third party thatenables engineers to see how VRF brands and technology comparewith each other and with traditional HVAC technologies.

Danoss North America President John Galyen outlined threespecic climate and energy challenges acing the industryenergy eciency, the Smart Grid and rerigerants. Specically,Galyen noted that the Smart Grid is becoming increasinglycritical to HVAC since buildings consume 40% o all energy inthe U.S. and demand is estimated to increase by 21% by 2030.

The way supply and demand are synced, the managemento electrical power, and improving the eciency o existinginrastructure, will continue to be critical issues moving or-ward. Well need to be aware o three main elementsdemandresponse, energy eciency and load management. Technologieslike variable speed enable end users and utilities better loadcontrol and demand response benets, he said.

Robert Wilkins, vice president, public aairs, said there islittle change in policy expected at the national level. Meanwhile, manuacturers are moving ahead with developing equipmentor hydrocarbons, using CO2 in supermarkets and industrialrerigeration, and considering HFC-32 or air conditioning.

The HVAC&R world continues to change, Wilkins said. Its becoming more and more complex, with more rerigerants, more system types and new regional dierences.
