Maha Vishnu. May that effulgent Maha Lakshmi Devi inspire and illumine

our mind and understanding.”

ASHTALAKSHMI - Eight divine forms of Goddess Lakshmi

Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fortune, is worshipped in

eight divine forms – Ashtalakshmi. The eight forms of Lakshmi are:

1. Aadi-Lakshmi (The Primeval Goddess)

2. Dhana-Lakshmi or Aishwarya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Prosperity

and Wealth)

3. Dhaanya-Lakshmi (Goddess of Food grains)

4. Gaja-Lakshmi (The Elephant Goddess of Power and Strength)

5. Santana-Lakshmi (The Goddess of Progeny)

6. Veera-Lakshmi or Dhairya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Valor and

Courage)

7. Vidya-Lakshmi (The Goddess of Knowledge)

8. Vijaya-Lakshmi (The Goddess of Victory)


ASHTALAKSHMI - 1/8 - ADI LAKSHMI

Adi Lakshmi - Wealth of endless prosperity. Goddess of no beginnings or

end : "Adi" means eternal existence. Adi Lakshmi signifies the never-

ending nature of the Goddess. She has no start and no end. She is

continuous. Wealth should therefore, flow continuously also.

Adi Lakshmi serving Sri Narayana is symbolic of her serving the whole

creation. Adi Lakshmi and Narayana are not two different entities but one

only. Lakshmi is Shakti. Lakshmi is the Power of Narayana.

Ashtalakshmi Sthotram reads..

Sumanasa vandita sundari madhavi chandra sahodari hema maye |

muni gana mandita moksha pradayini manjula bhashini veda nute ||

pankaja vasini deva supujita sadguna varshini shanti yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini ADI LAKSHMI sada palaya mam ||

Meaning :

Oh Adi Lakshmi the primordial goddess, protect me always. Pious hearted

devotees bow to you. You are beautiful spouse of Madhava, sister of

moon, golden, worshipped by sages and bestower of salvation. Your

speech is sweet. You are extoled by vedas. You stay on lotus flower.

Devatas worship you. You shower virtues. You are serene. Victory, Victory

to you the dear consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 2/8 - DHANA LAKSHMI

Dhana Lakshmi or Aishwarya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Prosperity

and Wealth). 'Dhana' means wealth, comes in many forms: Nature, Love,

Peace, Health, Prosperity, Luck, Virtues, Family, Food, Land, Water, Will

Power, Intellect, Character, etc. Goddess Dhana Lakshmi is the bestower

of wealth.


Dhimi dhimi dhin dhimi dhin dhimi dhin dhimi dun dubhi nada

supurna maye |

ghuma ghuma ghum ghuma ghum ghuma ghum ghuma shankha ni

nada suvadya nute ||

veda purane itihasa supujita vaidika marga pradarsha yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini Dhana Lakshmi rupena palaya

mam||

Meaning

Oh Dhana Lakshmi the bestower of prosperity, You engross in

rhythmic sounds ‘Dhim dhim’. You are worshipped with divine sound of

Conch and other instruments. You are worshipped by Vedas, Puranas and

mythology. You show us the vedic path. Victory, Victory to DHANA

LAKSHMI, the dear consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 3/8 - DHAANYA LAKSHMI

Dhaanya Lakshmi (Goddess of Food grains).

"Dhaanya" means grain. Food is our most basic and most important

wealth. We need food to sustain life.

Just like ANNAPOORNA. In this form the Divine Mother also gives the

blessed, the power to be a Creator of opportunity to others. One is

empowered to be a giver just like Lord Narayana.

Dhaanya Lakshmi is the Goddess of the harvest and blesses with

abundance of success in harvest. This truly symbolizes the inner harvest,

that, with patience and persistence, we obtain the abundance of inner

Joy, we obtain the blessings of Dhaanya Lakshmi.


Ayi kali kalmasha nashini kamini vaidika rupini veda maye |

kshira samud bhava mangala rupini mantra nivasini mantra nute ||

mangala dayini ambuja vasini deva ganashrita pada yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini dhanya lakshmi sada palaya mam ||

Meaning:

Oh DHAANYA LAKSHMI who makes our granary full, you are destroyer of

evils of Kali yuga. You are vedas personified. You are born in milk- Ocean.

You are in auspicious Mantras and you are worshipped by Mantras. You

stay on lotus. Devatas take refuge at your feet. Victory, Victory to the

dear consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 4/8 - GAJA LAKSHMI

Gaja Lakshmi (The Elephant Goddess of Power and Royal splendour).

'Gaja' means Elephant. Elephants signify splendour and royalty. In this

form, the Goddess blesses one with Royal splendour and wealth that

cannot be quantified.


Jaya jaya durgati nashini kamini sarva phala prada shastra maye |

ratha gaja turaga padayi samavrta parijana mandita loka nute ||

hari hara brahma supujita sevita tapa nivarini pada yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini gaja lakshmi rupena palaya mam

||

Meaning:

Oh Gaja Lakshmi worshipped by elephants. You destroy adversity. You

fulfill wishes. You are surrounded by chariots,elephants, horses and

infantry and others. Hari, Siva and Brahma admire your prowess. Your

sacred feet eradicate all afflictions. Victory, victory to the dear consort of

Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 5/8 - SANTANA LAKSHMI

Santana Lakshmi (The Goddess of Progeny)

'Santan' means children. To be blessed with children who bring joy in your

life, children who will make you proud of them, is the blessing of the

Divine Mother in this form. Children are the greatest treasure. Those who

worship this particular form of Sri Lakshmi, known as a Santana Lakshmi,

are bestowed with the grace of Mother Lakshmi and have wealth in the

form of desirable children with good health and a long life.


Ayi khaga vahini mohini cakrini raga vivardhini jnana maye |

guna gana varidhi lokahi taishini svara sapta bhushita gana nute ||

sakala sura sura deva munishvara manava vandita padayute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini santana lakshmi sada palaya mam ||

Meaning:

Oh Santana Lakshmi,bestower of progeny, Garuda bird is your mount.

You spread love. You are knowledge personified. You are paragon of

virtues and well wisher of all. You are praised in songs embellished with

seven musical notes. All devatas, demons, divine sages and human beings

bow at your feet. Victory, victory to the dear consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 6/8 - VEERA LAKSHMI

Veera Lakshmi or Dhairya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Valor and Courage)

'Dhairya' means Courage and perseverance. This form of mother Lakshmi

grants the boon of infinite courage and strength to face any

circumstances or adversities in life. To succeed in any and all undertakings

in life, it is important to have courage. Those, who are in tune with

infinite inner power, are always bound to be victorious.


Jaya vara varnini vaishnavi bhargavi mantra svarupini mantra maye |

sura gana pujita shighra phala prada jnana vikasini shastra nute ||

bhava bhaya harini papa vimochani sadhu jana shrita pada yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini dhairya lakshmi sada palaya mam ||

Meaning:

Oh Dhairya Lakshmi, the bestower of courage, you grant boons and fruits

quickly. Your form is that of sacred chants, you are pervaded by sacred

chants. You bestow knowledge. Scriptures adore you. You dispel sins and

wordly fears. Pious sages seek refuge at your feet. Victory, victory to

Dhairya Lakshmi the loving consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 7/8 - VIDYA LAKSHMI

Vidya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Knowledge)

'Vidya' means Education or Learning. Education of higher spiritual

knowledge.

Vidya Lakshmi bestows the knowledge to mould the ordinary life into a

Divine Life. A life of Service, a life of feeling for a fellow being, a life of

charity and generosity, a life of purity, and a life with an ultimate aim of

the realisation of the ABSOLUTE is the only real education, which can

come only with the grace of Vidya Lakshmi.


Pranata sureshvari bharati bhargavi shoka vinashini ratna maye |

mani maya bhushita karma vibhushana shanti samavrta hasya

mukhe ||

navanidhi dayini kavimala harini kamita phala prada hasta yute |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini vidya lakshmi sada palaya mam

Meaning:

Oh Vidya Lakshmi the bestower of erudition, please protect. You are

Bhargavi and you are Bharati. You alleviate grief of all. You are adorned

with a variety of gems and your ear hangings are studded with gems. Your

cheerful face radiates peace. You are bestower of all the nine types of

wealth. You eradicate evils of Kali Yuga. You fulfill desires. Victory, Victory

to dear consort of Madhusudana.


ASHTALAKSHMI - 8/8 - VIJAYA LAKSHMI

Vijaya Lakshmi (The Goddess of Victory)

'Vijay' means Victory. Vijay is to get success in all undertakings and in all

different conditions of life. Some are strong physically but weak mentally,

while others are economically rich but poor in their attitude and cannot

exert any influence. Vijay is to have all encompassing Victory. Vijay is to

rejoice in the glory of our real nature - Vijay is to conquer the lower

nature. Vijay is the victory in external and internal wars. Hence those,

with the grace of mother Vijaya Lakshmi, have victory everywhere, at all

times and in all conditions.

Jaya kamala sani sadgati dayini jnana vikasini gana maye |

anudina marcita kumkuma dhusara bhushita vasita vadya nute ||

kanaka dhara stuti vaibhava vandita shankara deshika manya pade |

jaya jaya he madhu sudana kamini vijaya lakshmi sada palaya mam ||

Meaning:

Oh Vijaya Lakshmi, the bestower of success and good fortune, you are

seated on lotus. You shower love and bloom knowledge. You are fully

covered by kumkum when worshipped. You are praised with instrumental

music. Your glory is recited in Kanakadhara stotram. Shankaracharya

prostrates at your sacred feet. Victory, Victory to dear consort of

Madhusudana.
