Letter From the Editor

On The Cover: This is a 3300cc (201 c.i.) Jabiru Aircraft Engine. It looks like a combination VW/Porsche/Corvair. The 6cylinder engine develops 120 HP @ 3300 rpm (the 4 cylinder model is 80 HP) and features almost entirely CNC machinedcomponents (the only cast item is the oil pan!). Learn more at http://jabiru.net.au/engines

(see Letter... on page 5)

I hope you able to attend our last meeting. We had

seven members show up tonight. It was expected thatattendance would be limited because Seth was out oftown and Paul (who normally rides with Seth) wouldlikely not make the long journey, and Harry needed tohelp Carol this evening. So all-in-all even was not toobad. We were again meeting at Black Bear Diner andthis seems to be our preferred location. As the meetingstarted there were only a few other people in the roombut then about 8:30 a large party of 15 or so showed upand it became a bit more difficult to hear. But no wherenear as bad as Harry's was getting!

This evening we had a special election planned to for-mally elect a slate of Officers for the next year. I wantedto be sure we had enough members voting, so I emailedeveryone an absentee ballot just in case they wouldnot be able to attend they could send it in and it wouldbe counted.

At the meeting Walt was talking about a Jabiru aircraftengine. It's made in Australia and looks like a combina-tion VW, Porsche, and Corvair. It's entirely machined(rather than cast) so the cooling fins are perfect. It'slight weight (180 lbs complete) and rated at 120 HP (6

cylinder model). It's a bit larger that the Corvair at 201 c.i. And canbe setup in either tractor or pusher modes. A pretty looking engine(see cover).

Minutes of the Last Meeting

(see Minutes... on page 10)

March 3, 2016

The meeting was formally called to

order about 7:58 by President TonyRichards. Tonight we we had 7 mem-bers in attendance.

Treasurer’s Report: Paul was not ableto come but he emailed that the bankbalance stood at $$$.

Membership: Harry reports two po-tential new members this month. One(forgot the name) is from Navato andthe other, Frank Esser is from Oak-land. Most everyone has renewed for2016 but if you haven't, please send inyour dues to Harry.

Old Business: Clark re-wrote the let-ter soliciting ads for the newsletter in-corporating comments form others. There was a general letter and also onespecific for those businesses that haverecently worked on Corvairs. Thesewere sent on to Paul (our AdvertisingChairman) along with a suggestedmailing list for him to use as he seesfit.

New Business: This month we werehaving Elections. For 2016-2017 theslate of Officers is: President – TonyRichards, Vice President – HarryKypreos, Treasurer – Paul Lacey, Sec-retary – Clark Calkins

As the positions were uncontested, allwere voted in by unanimous 12:0 votes(there were 5 absentee ballots castalong with our 7 attendees).

Events: A Tech Session is still on theschedule but the date has not beenset. Last month Seth suggested “de-flashing heads” as a topic. Marlenecalled and said that Fred had someold heads that we could use as a demoif need be. Thanks.Phil, who is also a member of theRossmore Car Club, went to the Co-bra Experience Museum in Martinez. They are open on the 3rd Sunday of

the month from 10:00 to 4:00. They have15 or so Shelby Cobras, 5 ShelbyMustang 350s, and GT 350s. There isa great 20 minute film on the live ofCarol Shelby. Sounds like an interest-ing place! Check out “www.cobraexperience.org”. This is located at 777Arnold Drive a block or two West ofWalmart. The Sacramento club will host theSpring-Fling again this year. To be heldin Sutter Creek (45 minutes south-eastof Sacramento) on the weekend of April22-24. Walt is thinking of driving hisCorvair but may only attend Saturdaysevents.Central Coast Corvairs will again hostthe VairFest in Arroyo Grande nextJune. The date was changed to June3-5 (see revised flyer on page 8).

Tech: Marc has a problem with thepassenger side door not opening (ei-ther from the inside or outside). It opensabout ¼ inch then just stops. Some-one suggested that the linkage is bind-ing or disconnected. About the onlysolution is to take off the door paneland look at the mechanism. It helps tohave the proper tools to doing this. Adoor handle removal tool is essential

for the door handle and window crank. These are available from most autoparts stores. Get one specific for GMcars. The door panel clips can be re-moved with a special tool (looks like amodified two pronged fork) or carefullypry it off with a putty knife, small screw-driver, etc. If the retaining clips break(which they often do) you can ordermore from Clark's. Early model carsuse a different clip than the late mod-els.Phil reported that his car is back atMAACO for paint touchup. There weresome minor spots to be touched upbut they went through the paint tryingto sand these out (hey, this happens)so they have to repaint this section. They are doing it for free but it is a nui-sance as you can imagine.Tony said the he bought some Cokerwhite wall tires for his Corvair. For origi-nality not for driving. Some time backTony acquired a new '69 Corvair tire andoffered to let Coker use it to make amold but he hasn't heard back. He alsomentioned that he drove by BenMozetti's old place in Rio Vista. Allchanged. The sheds are gone. No

Letter...I received a call from Dan (didn't catchhis last name). Dan is from Florida buthis father who just passed away livedin Oakland and had a '61 Corvair Van.Dan said that he couldn't take it backwith him and he was only going to bein town for two more days, could I helphim find a buyer. I sent a quick emailto our entire roster of current and formermembers to see if anyone was inter-ested in this Corvair otherwise it hasto go to the junk yard or Pick-N-Pull.Fortunately Frank Esser (who use tobe in our Club years ago) was able torescue it. He paid $240 for it (he said“..that's all I had on me at the time”)and towed it away. Frank is now plan-ning on re-joining SFBA. I am lookingforward to the pictures!

I received the following email fromDee Smirlis (former SFBA mem-ber now with the Sacramentoclub).

“Clark - I’ve been searching for yournewsletter for the past week or so

As Dee mentions I some how forgot toupload the February newsletter to ourweb site. Anyway I noticed that when Iuploaded the March newsletter thatFebruary was not there so I uploaded

SFBA Election of Officers for 2016 - 2017SFBA Officers normally serve from

April 1st of one year through March31st of the next. For several years nowwe have just assumed that the currentOfficers would continue for the nextyear. This year it was decided to holdan actual election. This was done at

the March meeting. To insure that therewould be enough votes to validate theelection, absentee ballots were emailedto everyone. That way if someoneknew they would not be able to attend, they could cast their vote anyway. Ofcourse if someone, at the last minute, was able to attend the meeting, their

absentee ballot would not be needed.

This year the meeting was lightly at-tended. We had seven members alongwith 5 absentee ballots for a total of 12votes available. The open positionswere:

President: Conduct the meetings, provide guidance for the coming year, and represent the Club in general.Vice-President: Help with meetings when the President is unavailable, help organize Club activities.Treasurer: Pay the Club's bills, manages the bank account, provide suggestions on maintaining Club solverency.Secretary: Take notes at the meetings, write up minutes for the newsletter.

This year all positions were uncontested thus the voting was unanimous with 12 votes each. So the winners are:

President – Tony RichardsVice President – Harry KypreosTreasurer – Paul LaceySecretary – Clark Calkins

and all I saw was January. Thismorning I looked again andfound February & March. I’mglad you are okay as I thoughtthat that you might be under theweather. The purpose of thismessage is to inform you andyour membership that we arehaving our bi-annual SpringFling. Hopefully you can distrib-ute the attached registrationform to the people. The one thatyou included with the newsletteris incorrect. We are NOT offer-ing T-shirts. We decided thatballcaps are a better deal. Toobad I didn’t see the newsletterbefore your meeting lastnight. Anyway, hope to seesome of you guys on April 22-23-24. It will be a fun event.Spread the word.”

it at the same time. I must be loosingit!

Minutes...Corvairs. New landscaping and paint. Not sure where Ben moved. Tony foundan on-line ad for “oldest Corvair”. Sentinfo to Dave Newell in case he was in-terested. Dave said he already knewabout it. It figures he would be up onthis! The talk turned to tires. Marc mentionedthat he took his car to get a flat re-paired and the shop wouldn't do it. Theyclaimed was illegal to mount tires thatare more than 5 years old. Walt saidhe ran into the same thing at Costco. They would not fix an old tire, he hadto buy a new one. Others said to look

for a tire shop that speaks only Span-ish, they will do anything. (Editor'snote: I tried to find any law regarding 5year old tires and could not locate any-thing. Federal or state. At one timethere was a proposal in Congress toprohibit the sale of tires more than 10years old but even that was not passed. If anyone knows of any such law, please let me know.). Costco wasmentioned as the cheapest place tobuy tires (if they have the brand youwant). You could save $100 per set.

Swap & Sell: Tony knows of a '63 Fal-con convertible that's for sale. It's bluewith aqua interior.Phil is still looking for drip rail moldingfor his '66 Corvair coupe for thepassenger’s side.

Respectfully submitted,

Clark Calkins, secretary
