Letter From the Editor

On The Cover: Our 2016 Annual Holiday Dinner was held at Frankie, Johnnie & Luigi Too! in Dublin. One of the rare timesyou will see me in a photo. Thanks to Janet for taking this picture and adjusting the flash setting so as to not over power theforeground!

(see Letter... on page 3)

I hope you were able to attend our Holiday Dinner a

week or so ago. This year we had the dinner at Frankie,Johnnie, & Luigi Too!, an Italian restaurant in Dublin. We had fourteen members and guests in attendance. The food and the wait staff were excellent. I arrived around6:30 to let them know the “final” head-count and havethem save the cake for after dinner. I expected to be thefirst there, but I found Rob, Zandra & Ceasar, from Napa, were already sitting in the bar area. Shortly there afterothers started showing up. But right at 7:00 they hadthe table all set and we proceeded to sit down and thewaiter took good care of us. Even doing separate checkswhich made it much easier!

When I stopped by a few days earlier to give them ahead-count and menu selection list (as best I knew), Ispoke with the manager on duty then and he said thatour group was not too large and we could probably justorder off the regular menu. I didn’t think much more aboutthis. On Saturday night when we were seated they handedeveryone menus and I just assumed we could order what

we wanted. Then half way through the dinner the manager thisevening (the same lady I had originally spoke with)came up to meand asked if this list of dinners she had was ours. This was thesame list written up when I stopped by a few days earlier. I said yes

Cheese Cake for Dessert - Delicious!

that was ours but when we were seatedthe waiter gave us all menus so weassumed that we should order off that. After all the other manager (who wasalso on duty this evening) had said weprobably would do this.

Well as it turned out that they hadmade up the banquet menu items andwere keeping them separate. So nowthey had 10 or so extra dinners in thekitchen. Oops! Anyway when we left Ispoke again with the manager as I feltbad about the mix up. She said “Don’tworry about it, it was our mistake.” WellI guess the staff will at least eat wellthis night!

Interestingly after the last meeting whenwe had selected Frankie, Johnnie, &Luigi as the restaurant of choice, Istopped by the following night to makethe reservation. Originally we wantedSaturday Dec 3rd but this was bookedand I chose the next weekend, Dec10th, which was still available. Alsothey said that with a group our size (Ihad estimated 15-20 people based onour previous responses) we would needto pre-order off the Banquet Menu. As Iwasn’t certain this would be accept-able, I sent off emails to our Board tobe sure they thought this would beokay or else I could explore other op-tions. They said this was fine so I madeup the flyer with the Banquet Menu andasked people to let me know if and howmany would be coming and what theirselections would be.

A week or so later I was starting to getnervous because I hadn’t heard fromanyone and I was thinking that if Ineeded to change the reservations thattime was running out. But shortly thereafter I started getting some responsesso I decided to wait a bit longer beforepanicking. In a few days I would sendout a second request to those I hadn’theard from but expected to. Thisbrought in more responses and brought

the head count to twelve or so. Whenthere was only a week remaining be-fore the dinner I phoned all those I couldwhom I still hadn’t heard from just tobe sure they had gotten the message.

I know I worried too much and I hope Ididn’t bug people more than neces-sary. I wanted the dinner to be well at-tended as some were driving a long wayon what turned out to be a rainy day.

Now on to something completely dif-ferent. Skip Polacchi, a long timeSFBA member and Corvair Parts ven-dor, sent in the following note:

“Hello Clark, Thelma and I traveledto Palm Springs and participatedat the GWFBT. We enjoyed so-cializing with many of our SFBAclub members. The GWFBT wasa well organized event. Paul Laceystopped by my sellers space andwe shared old stories and currentevents. Thelma and a few wiveswere able to do some shoppingand site seeing on Saturday. Yesthe ride down and back is long butwe lay over at Fresno. Best ofhealth & spirit to you and Carol.”

Letter...Skip also sent in a new list of items forsale. See the Classifieds.

Also in the last newsletter I showed apicture of a vendor at the Fan Belt Tosswhere I said I couldn’t tell who the ven-dor was. That was Skip! To see why Imissed this, I went back to try and getthe original photo I used from the Cac-tus Corvair Club’s web site but the pagewas no longer there. I wonder if the Clubobjected to me “borrowing” the photosthey published? Quite possible. Ohwell.

Our next meeting will be on January5th at 7:00 PM again at Black BearDiner in Danville. See you there!
