What is kaolin?Kaolinite is a clay mineralformed 50 to 100 million years ago . Rocks that havea lot of kaolinite are known as kaolin, china clay or

white gold.

Good kaolin is very white, soft, and made up of crystal plates that are usually stacked together.

Where was kaolin first discovered?

Kaolin was first discovered in southeast China. Its name comes from the town Kao-Ling, which means “high ridge.” Then it was discovered in Cornwall, England and in Middle Georgia.

There are kaolin deposits all over the world.

Where is kaolinfound in Georgia?

Kaolin in Georgia is found along the Fall Line, which runs from

Augusta to Columbus.

How is kaolin mined?

The kaolin is dug out of the ground or mixed with water and is sent by road or pipe line to local processing plants.

BASF, IMERYS, KaMin, and Thiele have plants that mix and purify the kaolin before it’s sold and shipped to customers.
