DRY SEPARATION DRY SEPARATION METHOD FOR KAOLIN SOURCES Kaolin Group has successfully invented and patented a dry-separation method for the beneficiation of raw kaolin sources, with the aim of increasing the inherent kaolinite content, by removing quartz and other impurities. This method is especially useful, where the raw kaolin ore has got components of very fine quartz and/or other clays, which cannot be separated through traditional cycloning or screening. The method works on kaolin ore directly as a mining product and does not require any other treatment before. Typically kaolin ore is received in lump form from the mine with its contained natural moisture level. Depending on the mineralogical composition of the kaolin, quartz and other impurities can be removed to the point where the finished kaolinite level is exceeding 60%. Kaolinite levels of up to 75% have been achieved using this method. Typical dry separation data: Mineralogical composition of raw kaolin source: AFTER DRY SEPARATION: Presentation: lumps ex mine powder Kaolinite: 30-40% 60-75% Quartz: 25-35% 2-15% Muscovite/Illite/Microcline etc: 25-35% 10-25% Natural moisture content : 5-15% < 0.5% The dry separation method will yield kaolin in a fine powder form with a mean particle size of between 4-15µm. The dry separation setup typically will be installed in modular plants capable of yielding between 1 – 5 tons per hour of beneficiated kaolin. Larger capacity plants can be developed to customer specific requirements. The required footprint of the plants is between 50-100m² and access to post-production heat (i.e. from a calcination facility) is beneficial.
