Welcome Index
Bafana Bafana might have bowed out of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, but South
Africa’s support for the tournament remains intact – thanks to a spectacular
final performance by the national team.
The South African football squad performed gallantly to beat European
giants and former champions France by two goals to one in Bloemfontein
on 22 June. For the first time in World Cup history, the team amassed four
points in the initial group stages.
This was not enough to see them through to the next round. Mexico, who
lost their last group match 0-1 to Uruguay, finished on the same number of
points but conceded fewer goals than the 83rd ranked South Africans. This
gave the Mexicans the advantage and they went through, along with
Uruguay.
Local supporters watched the match against France with great enthusiasm,
hoping that their beloved boys would score a record number of goals to
thwart Mexico’s push to the round of 16. The nation was gripped by
euphoria when Bafana scored their first goal. The second goal, scored by
striker Katlego Mphela in the 37th minute, sent them into raptures and
raised hopes dramatically.
That hope was sustained right until the last whistle. Disappointment, and
contrasting excitement, was written on every face. With the final this
weekend we can still enjoy the excitement and joy of the World Cup 2010
which we as South Africans hosted with pride!!!

SOUTH AFRICA IS GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY
This year’s exciting soccer extravaganza opens South Africa’s window to the world.
Professionals view the World Cup as a marketing opportunity which will engender,
hopefully, positive returns — for the economy in general and tourism in particular.
Property should also gain, but more in the long run.
From a business point of view it makes sense to look beyond the thousands of soccer
fans expected. They will have a great time — and doubtless shift an amazing amount
of beer and wors. But a significant portion of visitors will be well-heeled businessmen,
sporting administrators and the high net worth individuals (HNWIs) to be found at any
global fun feast. Then there are the Fifa officials, the media crews and last, but
certainly not least, the players and coaches, themselves among the highest paid
celebrities in the world.
Tourism and hospitality professionals have long said that the real benefit of the Fifa
2010 Soccer World Cup will take years to filter through. Foreigners will have time to
enjoy the beauty of South Africa and to take advantage of what the country offers. And
one of these is value for money!

WOLRD CUP BOOST SA ADVERTISING
The South African advertising industry looks set for a
R1.7-billion (US$221-million) increase this year as
major sports brands invest millions in marketing
targeting World Cup fans.
Part of this is a major new ad campaign by global sports
brand Nike, in direct competition to World Cup sponsor
Adidas. The campaign, announced on 23 June, it has
Facebook and Twitter messages sent by football fans
displayed on a giant electronic screen alongside digital
images of football stars signed to the brand.
This super-ad appears on Africa's largest digital
advertising screen on the Life Centre building in
Johannesburg. Soaring above the downtown area the
30-storey, 138-metre-high building is one of the city’s
most iconic structures.

BUILD, BUY OR RENOVATE??
Whether you're building, buying or renovating a home, it's
a challenge if you don't know what to expect. Save
yourself many grey hairs by finding out exactly what
you're letting yourself in for - from construction and
financial perspectives.
Every cent spent on building, buying or renovating a
home will probably be one of the best investments you'll
ever make - if you don't over-capitalise on your property.
Property experts warn that, just like any other investment,
research and timing are everything if you want to
maximise on the investment in your home.
There's no right or wrong answer to the question,
‘Should I build, buy or renovate?' The most important
factor is the reason for wanting to do so.
Most people who choose to renovate are happy where
they live, but either need more space or want to improve
their property and its value. Renovating is,

OFF-PLAN BUYERS ADVICE
If you‘re a homebuyer purchasing “off plan” – or in
advance of your home actually being built – you will most
likely have more money issues to deal with than those
purchasing a pre-owned property.
And the first of these is the matter of the deposit. It is very
important that you do not pay any deposit for a stand or
an off-plan home - or sign any agreement to purchase
such a home - until you have thoroughly checked the
credentials of the developer and/ or home builder and
made sure they are well-established operators with a
track record of completed and successful developments.

DEVELOPERS HAVE REASON TO BE POSITIVE
Developers should be jumping for joy at the prospect of
thousands of new homebuyers recently “liberated” into
the market by the introduction of a State mortgage
guarantee fund.
The fund is specifically intended to give the banks more
confidence about granting home loans to people earning
R3500 and R9000 a month – and there are thousands of
salary-earners such as policemen, teachers and nurses
this bracket who have previously been shut out of the
market.
However, there is a currently a limited amount of stock

GREAT PROPERTY DEALS ARE DRIVING THE MARKET
At the half-year mark, property buyers are firmly back in
the market – and getting great deals.
Indeed, this is set to be a winter of content for us,
because we are selling more properties and selling
them faster.
Sales volumes in our offices are up 35% for the second
quarter over the same period of 2009, and our strike rate
has risen from less than 10% during the depths of the
recession to around 30%.
This has taken the average listing time down to around
four months compared to six months last year, and we
are seeing the emergence of big ticket property sales
again.

PROPERTY PRICES SURGING
The June FNB House Price Index continued to show
rising year-on-year growth to the tune of 12.6 percent.
This is higher than May’s revised growth rate of 12.2
percent and is the seventh consecutive month of positive
year-on-year growth. In real terms, adjusted for CPI
inflation, this all translates into house price growth of 7.2
percent year-on-year for May.
However, it must also be said that there are signs that
the pace of acceleration in year-on-year growth is
starting to slow. Whereas the growth acceleration from
March to April was two percentage points, and from April
to May 1.9 percentage points, the latest acceleration was
down to 0.4 percentage points.

WORLD MOST EXPENSIVE CITIES FOR EXPATS
Visitors to New York may gasp that locals frequently pay
$20 for a single cocktail. But the Big Apple turns out to be
cheaper than 26 other world cities. If you really want to
feel sticker shock, try relocating to Luanda, Angola. The
oil-rich capital city is the most expensive in the world for
expatriates, a study released Tuesday shows.
World centers like the second-most expensive city
Tokyo, No. 5 Geneva, Switzerland, and No. 8 Hong Kong
are often associated with high costs, so it might seem
surprising that an African city out-priced them. But
Nathalie Constantin-Métral, senior researcher at Mercer,
a global research firm that advises companies on the
costs of moving employees and released the report,
says it's a misconception to think of Africa as cheap for
newcomers.

German World Cup was very exciting for us but South
Africa has a different vibe altogether,” said Philip
Friedrich from Germany.
“South Africans are very friendly people and they know
how to have fun. I’ve never danced and sang so much

But
Nathalie Constantin-Métral, senior researcher at Mercer,
a global research firm that advises companies on the
costs of moving employees and released the report,
says it's a misconception to think of Africa as cheap for
newcomers.

WORLD CUP TOURISTS PAINT SA RED
International visitors to South Africa, here to support their
teams in the 2010 Fifa World Cup, say they are having a
blast.
By the end of week one many foreign visitors had hailed
Africa’s first World Cup as one of the most vibrant. “The
German World Cup was very exciting for us but South
Africa has a different vibe altogether,” said Philip
Friedrich from Germany.
“South Africans are very friendly people and they know
how to have fun. I’ve never danced and sang so much
before, during, and after a game. When those vuvuzelas
start blowing you can’t help but feel the spirit of Africa
moving you.”
