PASTOR’S MESSAGE Happy Easter! Our hearts are filled with joy as we contem-plate the mystery of Christ’s victory over sin and death, the promise of eternal life, the light of Christ that emanates from the Paschal Candle to the hearts of all believers and the saving waters of bap-tism in which we are forever marked by Christ’s death and resur-rection. We need to remember that Easter is a Season and not just one day. This is taken from Bishop Untener’s “The Little White Book”: “Records show that Christians, besides celebrating Easter Sunday, celebrated a continuing Easter season as far back as the beginning of the third century. Outside of Ordinary Time, it became the Church’s longest season – a 50-day stretch from Easter Sun-day to Pentecost Sunday. It was not a time for penitential practic-es. Fasting and kneeling were not permitted. It was a time to exult in God’s goodness. Why is Easter so long? Because Christians believed that the Resurrection was just too big and too important to be celebrated for only one day, or even one week. ‘Why 50 days . . . not 10, or 20?’ Because there was already in place a Jewish feast called “Pentecost” (a harvest festival) which took place 50 days after Passover. When Pentecost became a Christian feast celebrating the descent of the Spirit, Christians turned the time between Passover and Pentecost into the “Easter season.” Just as we marked the 40 days of Lent with special prayers, fasting and acts of charity, may we too mark the 50 days of Easter with joy, hope and a spirit of celebration.

-- Fr. Dennis

REJOICE AND BE GLAD “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad” (Psalm 118:24). Let us remember that these words of today’s responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that poverty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us rejoice this day and be glad! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Many of our young adults are still registered with their parents. If you do have a change of status, please contact the Administration Office, 478-5014. Our priests and staff can better serve you if our parish records are up-to-date. Thank you very much.
