Summer

• Tips for Graduating Seniors

• Questions

Staying Connected: Don't Lose Touch!

Graduating or not, there are plenty of options to stay

connected to NU during the summer and beyond

• NU Mobile Application Suite for iPhone, iPod Touch,

BlackBerrys, and Android

• Connect your mobile device to e-mail and VPN

• Check out the last Student Tech Talk on mobility!

Stay Secure

• NetID

• Viruses and Malware

• VPN

• Data Backup

Stay Secure: NetID

At an Internet cafe or other public computer...

• Be careful!

• Public computers can be very unsafe, with key-

loggers or other malicious software

• If you must log in, don't save the password and

don't forget to log out!

Stay Secure: Viruses and Malware

• Frequent sources of harmful software:

• Pornography

• Streaming illegal video (e.g., SurftheChannel, Tudou,

MegaVideo)

• P2P programs (e.g., Bittorrent)

• Internet gaming sites (e.g., Wildtangent)

• Free screensavers, wallpapers, coupons, etc.

• Ad-heavy Web sites

Stay Secure: Viruses and Malware

• Make sure to be on the lookout for your browser

security notifications

• If you think you think your computer is infected:

• Run an anti-virus scan (Symantec, Microsoft Security

Essentials, AVG, etc.)

• Symantec does not expire with your NetID

• Run an anti-spyware scan (Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc.); most

Windows computers also come with Windows Defender

Stay Secure: Viruses and Malware

• Macs can get viruses as well

• Many Macs on campus have been infected by

the Flashback virus

• NUIT provides Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macs

• Updating to OS 10.7 reduces your chance of infection

Stay Secure: Viruses and

Malware

• If symptoms persist, the Support Center is open

over the summer

• Call us at 847-491-HELP (4357)

• Walk-in support for virus removal available by

appointment

• Laptop ER can also provide Data Recovery

options

9

Stay Secure: On the Go

• If you lose your phone, someone could gain

access to all the sensitive data stored inside

• Don’t use your phone to send confidential e-mails or

messages

• All phones can be protected with a security code

• iPhones can be set to wipe all sensitive data after

10 unsuccessful tries to unlock it

Stay Secure: Use VPN

• For access to Northwestern resources while off-

campus, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

connection

• Library resources, timesheet entry, etc.

• A VPN connection can also be used to encrypt your

connection when connecting to unsecured wireless

locations (e.g., hotels)

Stay Secure: Use VPN

• Northwestern is rolling out updated VPN service now

through October

• See the instructions on configuring VPN from NUIT's

Web site (Windows, Mac, or your mobile device)

• NUIT also offers automatic VPN configuration tools

that work on Windows and Mac available for

downloaded from the VPN page of our site

Data Backup

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN

BACK UP YOUR DATA

THAT IS ALL

Data Backup

Actually, wait, there's more!

There are several options for data back up:

• External hard drive or flash drive

• Web-based storage (iCloud, DropBox, Skydrive, Google

Drive etc.)

• Network drive

• Optical media (CD, DVD, etc.)
