How To Use RefWorks

A Very Very Quick Overview

What is RefWorks

A web-based product that simplifies the process of documenting sources in a research paper,

dissertation, or other project requiring references.

It helps you to:create and manage collections of references using

a web browser import references from a number of online

databasescreate bibliographies that can be inserted into

word processing documents.

Create a RefWorks Account

The RefWorks homepage

Log-In or Sign up for an Individual Account

Create a RefWorks Account

If creating an Individual Account,

it is important to initially start from the

HML homepage only

Make sure the grey box reads

Login to your Ohio Northern University RefWorks

account

Create a RefWorks Account

Fill in the blanks and a Congratulations window will appear. You are ready to begin importing citations.

Exporting and Importing Citations

Many of the databases available at ONU support importing citatins from RefWorks. All Ebsco

databases do, as do most OhioLINK databases and Proquest databases (shown below)

The new library catalog will export to RefWorks as well

Access Click on Choose Databases tab to get a complete list of all

databases indexed through Ebsco

Exporting Citations – Ebsco

After you’ve completed a search on one (or more) of the Ebsco

databases…

…from the Result List, click Add to folder for the records you want to import

1 Articles will be added to the Folder at the top of the page.

2 Click on the Folder to see its contents.

1. Select the citations you want to export by checking the box next to the citation.

2. Next, click on Export in the right-hand menu to export the citations.

1. Choose Direct Export to RefWorks.2. Choose Remove the items after saving if

you want to clear your folder.3. Click Save.

1. Enter your login name2. Enter your password3. Click Login

The RefWorks Import page will open1. RefWorks will prompt with Import

completed when it is finished2. Click View Last Imported Folder to view

your references

Importing Ebsco to RefWorks1. RefWorks will display references in the Last Imported Folder window.2. For information about searching and sorting your citations or about

creating and organizing folders click the RefWorks HELP link, or for information about downloading citations from different databases, see the RefWorks help links in the library’s database lists (see second image below).

3. Click the Find It! Button to see if an article is available in full-text, print, or microform format.

Write-N-Cite (WNC) is a utility that allows users (who meet the compatibility

requirements below) to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in

Microsoft Word
