1966

"The Spirit of Weslaco High," written by Ruth Helen Young in 1939, dwells richly in the minds and actions of the student body.

We, the 1966 La Palma staff, present this spirit as the theme and center of the La Palma for this year. In doing so, we express the many areas of activity in the school by utilizing lines from the Weslaco High School song.

"Our faith" is revealed by all of the classes and its perpetuity is carried fonh through the organizations. Since personalities are chosen for their popularity, sincerity, and loyalty, they pomay that "our heans are true." We "raise your name on high" through honors which students earn for Weslaco High School. Our undying spirit and suppon for spans demonstrates that "in victoty or defeat we'll stand unmoved by friend or foe." "au guiding hand" is the enthusiasm for the intellectual, moral, and spiritual welfare of the students displayed by the faculty. Such spirit remains as an ever -present guide for graduating seniors as ., on through life they go."

The National Honor Society is a high school organization, membership in which is based on scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The main objective of NHS is to promote these outstanding characteristics in students. The teachers of WHS select members on a percentage basis from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes from the eligibility lists. Members must be candidates for the academic plan and must maintain a scholastic average of 90 in each academic course,

Activities for the club include a formal initiation of new members, an installation of new officers, and Christmas caroling at the Hidalgo County Old Folks Home. Students are informed of their selection into the National Honor Society early in the year in a surprise initiation assembly.

In existence since 1961, the Phi-Chem-Bi club now has a membership ·of sixty-six. The name of this organization is a representation of the three phases of science offered in W.H.S.

(physics, chemistry, and biology). The three objectives of the club are knowledge and understanding, observation and skills, and interests and opportunities. Because Student Senate work is hard and time consuming, only the fittest students are elected members. The Student Senate undertook a new project, the publishing of a student directory containing the names, phone numbers, and addresses of all students. One of the money making efforts the Senate supports is selling covers for LaPalma. The Senate has taken student problems to the administration and brought back good results. With the Senate president presiding, a special committee officiates at all general assemblies. An election commission, headed by a commiSSioner, conducts all general elections. Members of the Senate acted as guides during spring orientation of freshmen.

Familiar to all smdents on campus is the WHS Hi -Life staff. Composed entirely of journalism students, this group works continuous hours to meet the deadline for the school newspaper. Each week, excepting the weeks during six weeks' and final exams, this paper containing all campus news is sold to

smdents at a small cost of five cents a copy. Much preparation goes into the making of each issue of this paper, .and no one is without work. Planning layouts and performing clerical duties are the responsibilities of Sharon White, assistant editor; Robert Crawford, editor; and Diane wee, business manager.

All phases of campus life, curricular and extra -curricular, are recorded in the annual publication of W.H.S. All organizations on campus and their activities are recorded in the annual. The La Palma also includes activities such as Graduation, Junior-Senior Prom, football and other sports (including records and scores), Mr. and Miss W.H.S., and U.I.L. contestants and winners.

The La Palma staff is a unique organization on campus. Its members work each day in a regular class to plan and prepare the annual. For this work the members receive no credit in grade points. However, the staff enjoys working to produce the La Palma. The typical question • 'Anybody got a new record to play today?" sets the pace for a day's "work" in class.

Beginning with a 7 -7 tie with the La Feria Lions on Sept. 11, Weslaco plunged into a difficult football season. A 31-7 loss to the Harlingen Cardinals Sept. 17 was followed by a Raymondville Bearkat 7 -0 tally on Sept. 24.

The Panthers unyieldingly fought the district -favored Donna Redskins Oct. 1. With only three seconds left in the fourth quarter, the scoreboard showed a score of 15-14 in Donna's favor. With Weslaco's touchdown came the choice of going for the extra point and a tie or for the two-point conversion and a victory. The Panthers gambled but failed by inches. The score remained 15-14,

Two succeeding games resulted in seven-point losses each: Rio Grande City Rattlers 7 -0 on Oct. 8 and Mission Eagles 15-8 on Oct. 15. The Panthers fell to the Robstown Cottonpickers 36-6 Oct. 22 and then to the Mercedes Tigers 14-0 Oct. 29.

Following an open date Nov. 5, the Panthers battled the PSJA Bears, second contender for the district crown, but were defeated 21-7. The homecoming game with the Falfurrias Jerseys on Nov. 19 ended the season with a 14-6 loss for the Weslaco Panthers.

Panther halfback Richard Suarez breaks away from three Mercedes Tigers to complete short yardage for a first down.

Panthers block Cottonpickers in order for quarterback Ken McRay to lrustle down field and pick up needed yardage.

Though being pursued by a Mission Eagle. Panther end Andy McMullen pulls the ball from the air and makes a long run before being brought down.

Before the Redskin quarterback is able to return the ball to the line of scrimmage. three Weslaco Panthers charge in and bring him down for a yardage loss.

Though young and inexperienced , the Weslaco Panther B team and freshmen proved to be spirited competitors. Kicking off with a 16-0 victory over Harlingen, the B team went on to defeat Edinburg 26-8. These two wins gave them the faith that they could succeed again, and they did , defeating Raymondville 16-0. Their 3-0 record received two blows when they were stopped by the Mission Eagle B team 48-6 and Mercedes 18-0. The B team and freshmen team were combined against Mercedes for the last game of the season. The year ended with a record of many more wins than loses. The performance of these two teams during the year showed definite promise for the coming years. The boys on these teams are expected to return in the fall of '66 to begin workouts for the season and to augment the Varsity Squad.

Coached by Howell Coleman, the Freshman tearn includes J . Garza , G. Solether, L. Pickard,

84

R. Morales , and A. Avalos ; C. Wood, J . Villarreal, B. Schuford. G. Bullion, and K. Schill; M. Donalson, J . Hernandez, H. Talbert , R. Garza, and G. Pena.

Panther B-Team members, coached by Mr. Edward Marchak are: L. Bustillos, J. Sens, M. Phillips, J. Rorres, R. Cowley, J. Miracle, D. Arnold, and J. Peck; J . Green, S. Wright, J . Sepulveda, J . Cavazos, p. Castaneda, B. Drake, T. Bradford and G. Morales; J . Madden, L. Colvin, G. Fojt, D. Whitley, A. Smith, A. Noriega, M. Raleign and A. Elizondo.

Panthers invited profess ional football player Y. A. Tittle to speak at the annual Panther Banquet. Tittle, past quarterback for several football teams, and present coach of the San Francisco 4ger's gave the main address at the banquet.

Paying no attention to the two Mission Eagles attempting to bring him down, Richard Suarez strives to break away for additional yardage.

Tennis, revitalized recently , is beginning to draw closer interest on the WHS campus. Even though the main competitive tennis matches do not begin until spring, the tennis teams statted practice and workouts, coached by Miss Evelyn Reisser, during the first weeks of school as patt of the athletic program.

This is the third year of the WHS golf team and it is rapidly gainiI!g in competitive status in the Valley. The golf team, coached by Mr. Gary Fletcher, travels throughout the Valley to tour naments durjng the year.

Business manager and tax collector Cecil Holman, administrative assistant Chris Carrizales, and curriculum director William Barnes look through a book of classroom library packages.

Engaged in many acnvltles benefiting the school system, Board of Trustees members work long in improving parent-teacher relationships, employing new faculty members, and planning financial and physical aspects of the District. They establish the policies which the superintendent administers in affairs of the school system.

At Weslaco High the principal, aided by two assistants, carries out these policies and guides the education and conduct of 900 students. All are charged with recording and keeping students' attendance, achievements, and grades. Teachers are responsible to and assisted by the admini strative staff.

An additional biology teacher, two new. general science teachers, and a new physics and chemistry teacher have been hired to handle the ever-growing number of students taking science as a preparatory step for college work. Because science is a requirement fcir higher education, more and better teachers are in demand.

As a rule this year juniors and seniors were the only students obligated to make projects for the annual Science Fair. Freshmen and sophomores were pennitted to research a project if they chose. Some of the projects that were exhibited last year were improved and displayed again this year. One student who had built a computer last year made a reduction and came up with a miniature replica of the original work. Several others were reconstructed thus aiding the Students in allowing them to go to the Regional Science Fair. '

A federal grant entitled the science department to much needed equipment to aid teachers in their insttuctions and explanations. Among the extra supplies were new biology books, the first ones issued in nine years.

The social studies depanment gives Students the necessary education in government, American and world history, and economics. This instruction prepares the student in the duties and responsibilities of citizenship and a background of American Heritage.

Pan of the social studies depanment's program for education of the student in world affairs is the United Nations Pilgrimage Tour. The depanment helps students prepare for this national contest. In order to compete, each panicipant must give a talk, "Why I want to go to the United Nations." The faculty works hard to prepare the students, and, funhermore, gets good results.

The publications department is responsibl~ for recording the events of the school. The Hi -Life is published and distributed on campus as a laboratory project of an academic journalism class. La Palma is published and distributed annually by a non-credit class. Through the publications department, the student body is informed of sports, school activities, and student news and events. The staff works many hours each week in preparing their respective publications. However, staff members do not work continually in the classroom. During the day, members can be seen on all comers of the campus taking photos and collecting news. They also sell and prepare advertising for Hi -Life. The publications department is undoubtedly (he most peripatetic organization on campus.

Music appreciation has been emphasized more this year than ever before. New to WHS, Mr. Kenneth Caldwell has truly put in his share of hard work conducting the "Green and Gold" band. Through his eagerness and determination WHS is the home of a first divis ion band. Also, Mrs. Sybil Mattar, well known to WHS, efficiently directs the choir to everyone's satisfaction. Throughout the year our choir attends several functions, one of which was the choir clinic in Brownsville in November.

With great enthusiasm and capability of leadership, Mr. Kenneth Caldwell directs the WHS band.

Foreign languages make up an important part of WHS curriculum. Classroom activities include recitation, working with class recordings , and almost all oral work in the foreign language. Students receive a good foundation of basics in either French or Spanish. Two years of a foreign language are now required for graduation and admission to certain colleges, and many students voluntarily pursue three to four years of languages.

The business department includes all the courses needed to give a balanced program in business skills. Courses available include

. typing I and II, bookkeeping, and shorthand, giving training necessary for office work and for use during college. Daily drills and assignments increase speed and accuracy while at the same time providing actual practice in the skills associated with these courses.

Excitement filled the air as the annual Junior-Senior Prom revealed a "Grecian Fes tival" theme, March 12, at the McAllen Civic Center. The prom theme featured a Grecian setting. Corinthian white columns flanked the dance floor, and graceful white doves hung overhead. A flower-filled fountain in the center of the dance floor, and elegant Greek goddesses completed the classical decorations .

Steve Peery was master of ceremonies while seniors witnessed the hilarious, confUSing conspiracy of Larry (Maxwellus Dumbus) Chandler, and his Greek gang: Faustino (Jack Snow) Garza, Pat (H.M., Sr.) Real, Florinda (Helen) de Leon, Eduardo (Slave) Cruz, Susan (Girl) Hays, and Bruce (Soldier) Osborn.

Following the banquet and floor show, the Keynoters orchestra furnished dancing music.

Entertainment provided by the junior class proved to be most unusual and very amusing.

. . .

As the 1965-66 school year comes to a close and another La Palma is completed, the time comes for looking over the past year and recalling the events and people who helped make the year and work as great as it was, As I relax knowing that the work is complete-- -the last photograph taken, the last cutline written, and the last copy block edited---I want to express my thanks. to all those who helped make the production possible ....

•.. Sharon White, whose ideas and suggestions were a big help when others failed; , •. Steve Rawe and Ronnie, who worked many extra hours, in rain and cold, to get pictures before it

was too late; , •• Dianne Luce, who hopped from tripak to file to grab pictures, letters, or whatever anyone needed ; , .. the rest of the staffwho listened to my noise and who were courteous in trying to follow suggestions

(even when they did not like them); , •. Henington Publishing Company, which tried to do anything they could to meet our needs ; , .. my parents, who understood that they were not really losing a son, but gaining a yearbook; • .. the faCUlty and administration, who cooperated in meeting deadlines and picture schedules; .. . the student body, who made the entire book possible by supplying antics and " letting" us

photograph them ; •.. last, but certainly not least, Mrs. Andersen (MaAndy), whose "nagging" was certainly a blessing

in time of need.

To these people goes a hearty "Thanks for everything" and the hope that each year to come may bring a growing spirit with a larger and better book to record it.
