JERIN asks just one thing ofits participants to beinspired.
Defined by its tagline,Creativity in Diversity,
JERIN Jerman (Germany) andIndonesia is a series of cultural, educational, artistic and intellectualevents that invite Indonesians toexperience, and interact with,German culture.
With more than 60 events held inmore than a dozen cities across thearchipelago between October 2011and March 2012, JERIN aims toillustrate how Germany andIndonesia are working together toaddress a wide variety of social, economic, political and culturalissues.
Since launching in October,JERIN events have entertainedthousands of children and adults, and enabled people to learn a littlemore about one of Indonesias allies.
JERIN is jointly organized by theGerman Embassy, the Goethe-Institut and Ekonid (the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry andCommerce).
The six-month event celebrates60 years of diplomatic relations
between Indonesia and the FederalRepublic of Germany. Many Germaninstitutions, including thedevelopment co-operation agencyGIZ, the academic exchange agencyDAAD, political foundations andmany German and Indonesiancompanies, are partners in theJERIN event.
Modern Germany is an economicpowerhouse; it is the largest economyin the European Union and thefourth-largest in the world, and thecountrys international profilecontinues to grow. Germany, with apopulation of about 83 million, isfamed for its efforts in combatingcarbon emissions and climatechange, and for its technologicalachievements.
Germany is one of the topEuropean education destinations forforeign students. The nation has alsoproduced some of Europes mostcelebrated composers, philosophersand poets.
It is a country with a stunningnatural landscape, as well as modern,
vibrant and unique cities.Despite the obvious differences
between two countries that areseparated by more than 11,000kilometers, their diplomatic andforeign trade relationships are strongand continue to move in a positivedirection.
The JERIN initiative aims toinject new energy and life into t his
longstanding relationship, and tofoster contact between German andIndonesian culture.
On the following pages, see thehighlights of events that have already

The Germany for Beginnersexhibition was created in 2009, inBerlin, and has toured the world. It isnow a part of the JERIN project seriesand here for Indonesians to enjoy andinteract with. Using the letters of thealphabet, from A for arbeit (work) toZ for zukunft (future), the exhibitionoffers a commentary and insight intoGermanys history, culture, politicsand traditions. The interactivesculptural exhibition uses video, text, images and other components toexplain modern-day Germany.
The multilingual exhibition iscurated by Jrgen Reiche of theFoundation Haus der Geschichte ofthe Federal Republic of Germany.Germany for Beginners opened in
Jakarta on Nov. 15, and travels to itsnext destination, Surabaya, on Dec. 4.

ALivingHeritage
The upcoming exhibition IndonesianBatik: A Living Heritage in Jakartaand Solo pays homage to one ofIndonesias most enchanting arts.

pieces, Living Heritage also aims tobring a broader understanding ofbatiks artistic value by explaining thedifferent steps of batik creation. Thisexhibition showing batik andarchitecture, automotive-design, batikmasterpieces by European artists andalso the clean batik initiative will bean exquisite mix for batik lovers and

Upon an invitation fromJERIN, and incooperation with BerlinFashion Week, eightdesigners representing
five different labels presented theirlatest collections at Jakarta Fashion
Week in November. The five labels Boessert/Schorn,
Starstyling, Hien Le, MOON Berlin, and Issever Bahri were selectedfrom almost 40 others to participatein the annual event. Hundreds ofcurious and enthusiastic Indonesiansturned out to see what the eclecticgroup of designers had to offer overthe course of a day.
MOONBerlin
MOON Berlin is an innovative fashionlabel by Brigitte Franken andChristian Bruns that mixes soft-circuit LEDs with luxury fashion toachieve a dramatic, but elegant, lightand shadow effect on evening gowns, cocktail dresses, trouser and blousecombinations and accessories.
Unlike most fashion designers whoare primarily thinking just about cuts, texture and color, Franken and Brunshave technical aspects to consider
when designing haute tech a termused to describe the marrying offashion and technology.
The design process often startswith a design topic the story thecollection should tell and the actualtechnical possibilities we have. Then
we start the design process, doingdraping, experiments, testing to see ifour concepts work as we envisioned,Bruns said.
Their 2011 collection, Im Not aRobot, emphasizes aesthetics, notscience fiction, and has beenpresented at a number ofinternational fashion shows.
IsseverBahri
Issever Bahri, by Derya Issever andCimen Bachri, combines handcraftedtechniques that are inspired by the
womens Turkish roots such as silk, leather and wool motifs, with modern, chic and classic European-style cuts.
We [design] clothes that arewearable in everyday life, but are stillsophisticated. We like it to be rustic, and never cute, Issever said.
The two 29 year olds are fashiondesign graduates from the University
of Applied Sciences in Berlin. Isseverand Bachri say they became instantfriends after meeting on the first dayof classes. Each went to work fordifferent fashion houses afteruniversity, but in 2010 they reunitedto start Issever Bahri.
The duo said they recognize thepotential of the Asian market becauseconcept stores, which specialize insmaller brands, have taken off due tofashion enthusiasts who have an eyefor new and up-and-coming brands.
Asia is one step ahead of Europein that sense, Issever said.
Issever Bahri is sold in sevenconcept stores in Germany andabroad, including one in Hong Kong, and is also sold online.
Boessert/Schorn
Boessert/Schorn by Sonia Boessartbrings attitude with daring patternsthat are casual but funky. Using yarnsand fabrics mainly from Italy, Franceand Austria, the label is bold but stilleasy to wear and comfortable.
Boessert/Schorn is inspired byantiques, crafts and traditionalcostumes The label uses handcraftmethods, knitted techniques andcolorful dyes to bring everythingtogether at once.
Since 2008, Boessert/Schorn hasreleased two collections every year, one in Paris and another in Tokyo.Since 2010, these collections havealso made their way to the catwalks ofNew York. The collection is now soldin about 40 selected stores in Europe,
Asia and North America.
HienLe
Laotian-born Hien Le used airyfabric, discreet cuts and solid boldcolors red, yellow, cream and blue to build his Spring/Summer 2012collection. The highlight: a stunningmaxi-length red dress.

Hien Le began his career infashion as a tailor in Berlin. He latercompleted his fashion studies at theUniversity of Applied Sciences in2008, and then moved into sales.
Less than two years later, Hien Ledecided to create his own fashionlabel where he could make use of his
varied skills designing,manufacturing and retail.
Hien Les fashion values aresimplicity, style and quality. Hisdedication to these three elementshas helped him to be a success is ashort period of time. Hien Les
collection is available in differentshops in France, Switzerland andGermany.
Starstyling
Mixing things up a bit wasStarstyling, which defined loud, funand colorful clothing during theircarnival-like parade down thecatwalk.
Their Spring/Summer 2012collection, Stripes for Your Right toParty, includes light dresses, T-shirtsand shorts. The collection featuredpainted, printed, foil, woven andknitted stripes.
Katja Schlegel and Kai Seifried area quirky married couple bursting w ithcreativity. The couple launchedStarstyling in 2000.
Starstylings colorful hand-painted leggings and shorts and foilpatterns are sold across Europe and
Asia, where both of these designersbelieve their concept and style will fitright in.
Its all just colorful and fun, andpeople have the courage to wear colorin Asia, Seifried said.
The designers DeryaIssever and Cimen Bachrisaid they recognize thepotential of the Asianmarket because conceptstores, which specializein smaller brands, havetaken off due to fashionenthusiasts who have aneye for new and up-and-coming brands
