Here you will find the latest news about the department, its exceptional achievements and updates of students and faculty. The UG programme in the department of Mechanical Engineering is certified with NBA Accreditation status for two year term with effect from 01 July 2016. This was made possible because of the wholehearted and sincere effort taken by the department faculty members. My hearty congratulations and gratitude to all the faculty members for this coveted achievement. APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (APJAKTU) instituted in the year 2015 is bringing radical change in the engineering and technology education in the state with the major objective of producing employable engineering and technology graduates from engineering colleges. In line with the guidelines and policies laid down by the university the department is practicing concept-oriented outcome based teaching-learning system. It is another feather in the crown of the department that the department occupies 5th position among the private self-financing engineering institutions in the state in terms of the first semester APJAKTU results. Our strategy for ensuring that our department remains well- positioned to maintain its phenomenal growth includes attracting highly competent scholars as faculty members, expanding our honors tracks, and continuing to review and redefine knowledge transfer process, with an eye toward elevating the department to highly regarded position in the state level. I thank the current students and teachers for bringing their talents and fervor to continue the tradition of striving for their personal best as exemplified by their predecessors. Congratulations to Mr. Manoj Balakrishnan and his team who combined, helped in materializing this issue of LUMINO. I warmly welcome you to the fourth edition of

the annual newsletter - LUMINO - of the

Department of Mechanical Engineering. Here you

will find the latest news about the department,

its exceptional achievements and updates of

students and faculty. The UG programme in the

department of Mechanical Engineering is certified

with NBA Accreditation status for two year term

with effect from 01 July 2016. This was made

possible because of the wholehearted and

sincere effort taken by the department faculty

members. My hearty congratulations and

gratitude to all the faculty members for this

coveted achievement. APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University

(APJAKTU) instituted in the year 2015 is bringing radical change in

the engineering and technology education in the state with the major

objective of producing employable engineering and technology

graduates from engineering colleges. In line with the guidelines and

policies laid down by the university the department is practicing

concept-oriented outcome based teaching-learning system. It is

another feather in the crown of the department that the department

occupies 5th position among the private self-financing engineering

institutions in the state in terms of the first semester APJAKTU

results. Our strategy for ensuring that our department remains well-

positioned to maintain its phenomenal growth includes attracting

highly competent scholars as faculty members, expanding our honors

tracks, and continuing to review and redefine knowledge transfer

process, with an eye toward elevating the department to highly

regarded position in the state level. I thank the current students and

teachers for bringing their talents and fervor to continue the

with teamwork and effective communication for successful completion of engineering

Objectives (PEOs) are

1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals to the conceptualization of science

and engineering models.

2. Identify, analyse, formulate and research literature to interpret data for Mechanical Engineering problems using

first principles of mathematics and engineering sciences.

3. Design solutions for Mechanical Engineering problems and develop systems, components or processes that

meet specified requirements.

4. Conduct investigations, analyses and interpretation of data and synthesis of information to arrive at valid

conclusions to complex Mechanical Engineering problems.

5. Demonstrate skills to select and apply modern engineering tools, understanding the constraints, using appropri-

ate techniques.

6. Demonstrate understanding of the societal and legal issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to engi-

neering practice.

Mr. Cherian Paul has re-joined as Asst. Professor (Senior Scale) in September 2015. He completed his B.Tech

from SAINTGITS College of Engineering and M.Tech in Manufacturing Engineering from Amrita University,

Coimbatore. He is pursuing PhD in Surface Engineering at Amrita University Coimbatore.

QEEE Sessions were organized for Mechanical Engineering students by Mr. Francis Augustine

Joseph, the department coordinator for QEEE. The first session of QEEE, on the topic

„Automobile engineering - Brake Systems‟ meant for 4th semester students was conducted on

14th March followed by second and third sessions on 21st and 28th March. The session of QEEE on the topic „Gears‟

for 6th semester students was conducted on 1st, 8th and 9th of March 2016 and that on the topic „Heat Transfer‟ for

8th semester students was conducted from 21st - 23rd March, 2016.

1. Workshop on AutoCAD

One day workshop on AutoCAD was organized by the

department on 30th July 2015 in association with Autodesk

India Pvt Ltd. The workshop was coordinated by Er. Jenny

John Mattam, Asst. Professor, ME Dept. The objective of the

workshop was to give a fundamental training to the faculty

members of Engineering Colleges on AutoCAD in view of

the Engineering Graphics syllabus of Kerala Technological

University. The session was open to all faculty members

irrespective of engineering discipline. The resource person

was Mr. Viju Antony, Executive Director BIMIT, M/S

Coretech Solutions.

The thrust areas in the training were familiarizing various

coordinate systems, drawing of lines, circle, polygon, arc,

ellipse, etc., creating 2D drawings, transformations: move,

copy, rotate, scale, mirror, offset and array; trim, extend, fillet, chamfer, dimensioning and text editing; exercises

on basic drafting principles, to create technical drawings, creation of isometric views of simple solids from

orthographic views, course material in the form softcopy was distributed to all the participants.

2. Workshop on Multiphase Flow-Theory & Applications

Three day workshop on „Multiphase Flow-Theory & Applications‟ was conducted during December 2015. Mr.

Geo Sebastian and Mr. Nandu S were the coordinators of the workshop.

Dr. Sarith P. Sathian, IITM inaugurated the workshop and delivered a talk on „Nanoscale hydrodynamics and

thermal transport in rarefied gas flows‟. A session on „Numerical studies on turbulent multiphase scramjet

combustor flow field using finite volume method‟ was handled by Dr. S. Jayaraj, NIT Calicut. Dr. Ranjith S.

Kumar, CET, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a talk on „Multiphases in microfluidics‟. Er. Ranjith R. of Riddhi

technologies, assisted by Nikhil Mohanan, took hands-on session on „Multiphase Flow Modelling‟.

Dr. Anand Raj Hariharan ASIET, Kalady took a class on „Modelling Of Sprays‟. Dr. Sreejith C. C., SAINTGITS,

Kottayam gave talk on „Multiphase Flow Modeling In Fluidized Bed Systems‟. Dr. M Suresh of FCRI, Palakkad

handled a session on „Multiphase Flow Measurement Techniques‟.

3. Quad Copter Workshop

Two day workshop on Quad Copter was conducted on 24th and 25th July 2015 as part of RoboFeast 2016.

RoboFeast-2016 is a National Level workshop cum Championship and Workshop series jointed by Cognizance IIT

Roorkee & Revert Technology Pvt. Ltd. 49 Mechanical Engineering students had participated in the workshop and 5

students were selected for the final round which was held at IIT Roorkee in March 2016. Mr. Bibin Varkey was the

faculty coordinator of the workshop.

d) A training programme on Computational Fluid Dynamic Software „FLUENT‟ for faculty members of thermal

stream, under the banner of SESI, in April 2016. The session was handled by Mr. Renjith, Assistant Professor,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, FISAT. The thrust area in the session was „Modelling and Analysing a

basic heat and fluid flow problem and Plotting the results‟.

Design Stream (Coordinator: Mr. Chacko Preno Koshy)

a) One day seminar on Advanced CAD software (CATIA Kinematics, CATIA Reverse Engineering) in

association with ISTE SAINTGITS Chapter was organized for the Mechanical Department Faculty

members in May 2016. The session was handled by an expert from CADD Center, Kottayam.

b) The department in association with ISTE SAINTGITS Chapter conducted

a CAD Modelling contest for S4 Mechanical Engineering students in April

2016. Out of the 42 participants, 13 were selected for the final round.

Sachin Soney, of 2014-‟18 batch, won the first prize.

c) The „Best Designer‟ competition was conducted by the department in

April, 2016. 21 students participated in the event. Roshan Mohan of 2012-

‟16 batch emerged as the winner.

SAE SAINTGITS Collegiate Club conducted Tier I competitions as part of Student Convention 2015 on 27th & 28th

July, 2015. SAE members of the college have participated in Auto Quiz, Welding & Aero-Modeling competitions.

Team `STRIDERZ' representing SAINTGITS College of Engineering fabricated an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and

Srishti 2016 - National Level Technical Project Exhibition and Competition for engineering

students was organised on 27th & 28th January 2016 in association with Kerala Financial

Corporation, Kerala Startup Mission, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India

(EDII)along with SAINTGITS Industrial Research Centre and SAINTGITS Centre for Innovation and

Entrepreneurship. The Industrial Partner for Srishti 2016 was National Instruments. The programme was

inaugurated by Sri. T K Jose, IAS, Chairman - Coconut Development Board of India. All Kerala Robotics

Championship for School Students was also organized as a part of the event. Sri. T K Jose has also tested the

innovative Hand Paddy Harvester designed and prototyped by the Mechanical Engineering Students (Mr. Akhil

Sivadas, Mr. Amal Abraham, Mr. Christy Joseph Jacob, Mr. Ebin Philip and Mr. Finny Varghese of 2012-16

batch) under the guidance of Mr. Tom Mathew. The department had exhibited 26 project prototypes made by

the Mechanical Engineering students. The chief guest for the award function was Padmabhushan Dr. G.

Madhavan Nair. A total amount of Rs 3.5 lakhs was awarded as cash prize to the winners in the various

streams and segments. Mr. Vinay Mathew John, was nominated as the coordinator. Mr. Aju Zachariah Mani

and Mr. Nikhil Ninan, were nominated as the programme committee for stream head and technical committee

The department, in association with ARMS (Association of Royal Mechanical students of SAINTGITS) organized the

Ninth National level inter collegiate technical festival – „MECHNIUS 2015‟ on 31st July and 1st August 2015.

The competitions included events like Paper Presentation, Brain Storm

(Quiz), Battle of Bots (mini robots stability competition), Junkyard Wars

(assembly of catapult to destroy a target), Ultimate Royal (technical and

managing capability testing), Mecha Trail (time bound events), The Machinist

(fastest assembly of parts), Lathe Master (lathe production process), Auto-

show (modified, vintage and new generation automobile competition) and

Hot Wheels (racing of RC cars). The student co-ordinator was Mr. Akhil

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Saintgits College of Engineering was

established in the year 2002 with an intake of 66 students. The four year B.Tech course

consists of 8 semesters integrated with theoretical and practical sessions. Currently the

yearly intake is 126 students and they are allocated in 2 batches viz., ME(A) & ME(B).

M.Tech in Machine Design was started in 2008 with an yearly intake of 18 students. Add-on

courses on Modeling and Analysis Software, MS Project, CNC and 3-D Printing are being

conducted for the UG students.
