MATERIAL EXPLORATIONFIRST OPPORTUNITIES FOR CUSTOMIZATION

In parallel of the market analysis and user research I was doing, I started experimenting with materials in order to find opportunities for customization. The first thing to do was to get a standard sole and try to vary its stiffness by changing its material composition.Pr. Iannucci at the department of material at Imperial College has previously investigate carbonanotubes in collaboration with Adidas. He encouraged me to explore with fibber glass, carbon fibber, cured laminated glass and resins.

The simplest way to get a sole was to cast an existing one. As the shoe used was still needed for further experiments, the sole and upper could not be separated, an alternative route was then followed. The thickness was determined using a plastic part that has been vacuum formed to produce the upper part of the mould. The first parts produced by casting were made out of polyurethane resin. It appears that the mechanical properties of the resin are not very suitable for sprinting. The plate is stiff enough but more fragile than current soles.

Casting processes have been fully experimented using silicone rubber, ceramic clay and plaster and thus part of the initial learning objectives has been fulfilled.LEFT
