GLORIOUS AND HOLY PASCHA

The word Easter refers to the season of the rising sun, to new life of spring. The same feast is called

Passover, or Pasch by many nations. The Hebrew Passover (Pesach) was instituted to commemorate the

deliverance of the people of Israel the night before their departure from Egypt. The angel of God

destroyed the first-born of the Egyptians, but “passed over” the houses of the Israelites.

By God’s command, communicated by Moses, each Hebrew family was to slay a lamb without blemish

and sprinkle its blood on the door frame. The lamb was to be roasted in the evening. No bones were to

be broken, and it was to be eaten with unleavened bread. The same rite was to be repeated every year in

a solemn ceremony on the eve of the feast, as it is still being done by Jewish people everywhere. Jesus

observed it on the night before He died.

There is a significant link between the Christian Easter and the Jewish Passover since Christ died on

Passover Day. The Jewish custom is also symbolical of Christ, “the Lamb of God who takes away the

sins of the world” (John 1:29). Hence the name and signification of the Hebrew Pasch was devoutly

accepted and used by the Church.

On this glorious and holy day, the whole Church celebrates with joy the final triumph and life-giving

resurrection of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ. After the long period of darkness brought

about by original sin, after the seemingly endless expectation of the prophets, after the glad tidings of the

nativity that came to pass when the time had come, after the thirty hidden years and the three years of

public life, after the frightful passion which had seemed to be the end of all hope, after the two days in

the depth of the tomb, behold: CHRIST IS RISEN! Indeed, indeed, He is risen, and all is true, every

promise of God has been fulfilled: the Saviour has come, the Lamb of God has been sacrificed to take

away the sins of the world, and supremely triumphant in his apparent defeat, He has crushed death by

his death and restored everlasting life through his resurrection! The time of weeping is over: now is the

time for joy! Now that we have been cleansed by the passion of Christ, now that we have repented and

atoned for our sins during the penitential season of Lent, let us rejoice: let us give one another a Christ-

like kiss of peace, confirming our love towards all, celebrating the end of the enmity between God and

man, proving our reconciliation through Christ. Easter is truly for us the Passover: for Christ, through

his passion and resurrection, made us return from the curse of Adam and the bondage of Satan to the

state of Children of God.

The day after the Sabbath was called by the Hebrew “the First Day.” In the early age of the Church, it

was dedicated to the glorification of the Lord and called in Greek “Kyriake,” or “Day of the Lord.” The

apostles transferred to it the dignity of the Sabbath of the Old Testament and prescribed that it be a holy

day and a day of rest. Thus did the first day of the Hebrew week become Sunday, the Day of the Lord.

GOYA NEWS AND UPDATES

FOR FAMILIES AND YOUTH

GOYA had the first Glendi party this year. We had great success and

this year we invited our fellow churches to attend. Thank you for all who

attended and participated in putting it all together.

GOYA basketball is striving this year. We added a new joy team.

Average age is 10-12 and there is at least 15 children practicing and playing in

games. This year we added new basketball uniforms that the kids paid for.

We got a great price. Thank you Sperri Diavatis for your contact on uniforms

and thank you Louisa Pieratos for collecting the old uniforms and ordering all

the new ones. We appreciate all the back and forth in getting all the uniforms

together.

GOYA also had a great idea last month. To watch MY BIG FAT GREEK

WEDDING PART TWO, together with all the kids and it turned out that the

parents also got so excited we were able to reserve a movie theater for 300 seats

and presold all the tickets immediately. Thank you Petros family for using your

contact to get the theater reserved for us.

GOYA is also hosting PALM SUNDAY luncheon. This luncheon has being

a big success over that past few years and GOYA raises most of their funds on

this big event. We appreciate all the donations and participation we get from our

parish. We will be asking for donations this year from our families.

Please consider helping our youth and also more importantly attending with your

family and friends. We will be pre-selling tickets next Sunday April 3rd.
