Knee joint component

Bones

• The knee joint is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body

• The knee joint has three parts. The thigh bone (the femur) meets the large shin bone (the tibia) to form the main knee joint.

• The kneecap (the patella) joins the femur to form a third joint, called the patellofemoraljoint. The patella protects the front of the knee joint.

Ligaments

The knee joint is surrounded by a joint capsule with ligaments strapping the inside and outside of the joint (collateral ligaments) as well as crossing within the joint (cruciate ligaments)

We have 2 main types of ligaments

• Collateral ligament

• Cruciate ligament

Ligaments

Collateral ligament divided into

• Media collateral ligament

• Lateral collateral ligament

Cruciate ligament also has two

• Anterior cruciate ligament

• Posterior cruciate ligament
