AMERICAN FOOTBALL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

American FootballSport with two opposing teams of 11 players who attempt to score points by moving the ball into the end zone or kicking it between the goalposts.

Playing field

Rectangular surface (53.3 x 120 yards) covered with natural or synthetic grass on which a football game is played; a game consists of four 15-minute quarters.

FIELD Yard line The solid lines at five-yard intervals that

mark the distance from the goal line; at the start of a game, the ball is kicked off from the thirty-yard line.

Inbounds line The broken lines marking off yards; the

lines and inbounds lines mark the line of scrimmage when play resumes.

End line Line marking the far extremity of the end

zone; the white area behind the goal is not part of the playing field.

End zone Zone in which a touchdown (six points) is

scored when a player crosses it in possession of the ball.

Goal Frame consisting of two

goalposts and a crossbar; a team scores points by kicking the ball between the goalposts

Football player Football players’ protective

equipment varies depending on the player’s role and position on the field

Scrimmage: defense The defense tries to prevent the opponent’s movement

toward the end zone by stopping runs and passes.

Scrimmage: offense The offense or team with ball possession has four downs

to gain 10 yards. If it succeeds, it is given another four downs; if not, the ball is turned over to the other team by means of a punt.
