Right now I am building objects. I’m most interested in fabric, and using it to draw

three dimensionally. Often this involves building a frame with found objects and

then using the seams, folds and flaws in the fabric to create an image. I am also

experimanting photography, and I think of the things I build as being created to be

recorded, in film or in photographs.

I consider films the most important influence of my work. My fondness for early horror

films has engedered an appreciation of romanticism and kistch, as well as an intrest in

props and costume. More recently I’ve been interested the films of Ingmar Bergman and

the french new wave, as well as experimental films of Francis Alys and Vito Acconci.

These films reflect my desire to challenge an audience.

I want to communicate with people who aren’t necessarily seeking my message. I am

interested in the potential of digital distribution and public spaces as a way to reach

new people, particularily people whos lives aren’t directly touched by contemporary

art. I want the objects I make to be experienced. If my work need to be touched,

damaged or decay in order to communicate I am open to that potential.

Ultimately I’m trying to communicate and inspire empathy. I think that suffering leads

to the development of further suffering, and that empathy and compassion diminishes

suffering and halts its growth. Similar to buddhist practices I would like to use

imagery as a way to meditate on personal suffering and relate it to the suffering of

others.

In the future, I want to develop collaborative relationships that will help me create

my work and record it. I am continuing my education with a second bachelor’s

degree in fall of 2013.
