Types of Buildings in the USA
Houses
• Usually one family lives in each house.
• Houses usually have their own backyards and a li?le bit of land surround the house.
• They are built separately from other houses. This makes them different from duplexes or apartments.
Mobile Homes
• These homes are built in a factory and then delivered to the locaCon where the family will live.
• There are neighborhoods where all of the residents live in mobile homes. These are called “trailer parks.”
Duplexes
• A duplex is a dwelling that has been divided into two parts so that two families can live in it.
• The homes share a common wall.
• The homes do not have to have the same floor plan, but they usually do.
Apartments / Flats
• These homes are usually intended for one family and can vary by size.
• These homes occupy part of a building; in some cases, they occupy the enCre floor.
• People do not buy apartments. Instead they rent them for a specific amount of Cme.
Condominium • These homes are like apartments, except that people buy them instead of renCng them.
• Common spaces are shared by all the people who live in the building.
Houseboat
• These homes are boats that have been converted into homes.
• SomeCmes people live in these year-‐round, but more oRen these are only used during the summer.
• Some houseboats are motorized and owners can travel in them; others are Ced up and do not move.
