Introduction
PURPOSE AND USES OF THE ECONOMIC CENSUS
The economic census is the major source of facts about the structure and functioning of theeconomy. It provides essential information for government, business, industry, and the generalpublic. Title 13 of the United States Code (Sections 131, 191, and 224) directs the Census Bureauto take the economic census every 5 years, covering years ending in 2 and 7.
The economic census furnishes an important part of the framework for such composite measuresas the local gross product, input/output measures, and other statistical series that measure short-term changes in economic conditions. Specific uses of economic census data include the follow-ing:
Policymaking agencies of the federal government use the data to monitor economic activity andto provide assistance to business.
Local governments use the data to assess business activities and tax bases within their jurisdic-tions and to develop programs to attract business.
Trade associations study trends in their own and competing industries, which allows them tokeep their members informed of market changes.
Individual businesses use the data to locate potential markets and to analyze their own produc-tion and sales performance relative to industry or area averages.
SCOPE
Data from the 2002 Economic Census of Island Areas are published for the first time on the basisof the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). NAICS replaces the Standard Indus-trial Classification (SIC) System used in 1997 and earlier censuses. The 2002 Island Areas publica-tions cover the following NAICS sectors:
21 Mining
The mining sector comprises establishments that extract naturally occurring mineral solids, suchas coal and ores; liquid minerals, such as crude petroleum; and gases, such as natural gas. Themost common type of mining activity in the island areas comprises stone quarrying. The miningsector distinguishes two basic activities: mine operation and mining support activities. Establish-ments are grouped and classified according to the natural resource mined or to be mined. Indus-tries include establishments that develop the mine site, extract the natural resources, and/orthose that beneficiate (i.e., prepare) the mineral mined.
22 Utilities
The utilities sector comprises establishments engaged in the provision of the following utility ser-vices: electric power, natural gas, steam supply, water supply, and sewage removal. Activitiesassociated with the utility services provided vary by utility: electric power includes generation,transmission, and distribution; natural gas includes distribution; steam supply includes provisionand/or distribution; water supply includes treatment and distribution; and sewage removalincludes collection, treatment, and disposal of waste through sewer systems and sewage treat-ment facilities.

23 Construction
The construction sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in the construction of build-ings or engineering projects (e.g., highways and utility systems). Establishments primarilyengaged in the preparation of sites for new construction and in subdividing land for sale as build-ing sites are also included. Construction work done may include new work, additions, alterations,or maintenance and repairs. Establishments primarily engaged in activities to produce a specificcomponent (e.g., masonry, painting, and electrical work) of a construction project are commonlyknown as specialty trade contractors.
There are substantial differences in the types of equipment, work force skills, and other inputsrequired by establishments in this sector. To highlight these differences and variations in theunderlying production functions, this sector is divided into three subsectors: Construction ofBuildings (Subsector 236), Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction (Subsector 237), and Spe-cialty Trade Contractors (Subsector 238).
Information for the construction sector is not included in the Geographic Area Statistics publica-tion for Puerto Rico. Data for the construction sector is published in a separate report(IA0200IPRC).
3133 Manufacturing
The manufacturing sector comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, orchemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. The assem-bling of component parts of manufactured products is considered manufacturing, except in caseswhere the activity is appropriately classified in Sector 23, Construction. Manufacturing establish-ments from this sector are often described as plants, factories, or mills and characteristically usepower-driven machines and materials-handling equipment. The subsectors in the manufacturingsector generally reflect distinct production processes related to material inputs, production equip-ment, and employee skills.
Information for the manufacturing sector is not included in the Geographic Area Statistics publica-tion for Puerto Rico. Data for the manufacturing sector is published in a separate report(IA0200IPRM).
42 Wholesale Trade
The wholesale trade sector comprises establishments engaged in wholesaling merchandise, gener-ally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise. Thewholesaling process is an intermediate step in the distribution of merchandise. Wholesalers areorganized to sell or arrange the purchase or sale of goods for resale (i.e., goods sold to otherwholesalers or retailers), capital or durable nonconsumer goods, or raw and intermediate materi-als and supplies used in production. Wholesalers normally operate from a warehouse or office.This sector comprises two main types of wholesalers: those that sell goods on their own accountknown as wholesale merchants and those that arrange sales and purchases for others generallyfor a commission or fee.
4445 Retail Trade
The retail trade sector comprises establishments engaged in retailing merchandise, generally with-out transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise. The retailingprocess is the final step in the distribution of merchandise. Retailers sell merchandise in smallquantities to the general public. This sector comprises two main types of retailers: store and non-store retailers. Store retailers operate fixed point-of-sale locations to attract walk-in customers.Nonstore retailers, also serve the general public by reaching customers and marketing merchan-dise with methods, such as the broadcasting of infomercials, the broadcasting and publishing ofdirect-response advertising, the publishing of paper and electronic catalogs, door-to-door solicita-tion, in-home demonstration, selling from portable stalls (street vendors, except food), and distri-bution through vending machines.

4849 Transportation and Warehousing
The transportation and warehousing sector includes industries providing transportation of pas-sengers and cargo, warehousing and storage for goods, scenic and sightseeing transportation,and support activities related to modes of transportation. The modes of transportation are air, rail,water, road, and pipeline. This sector distinguishes three basic types of activities: subsectors foreach mode of transportation, a subsector for warehousing and storage, and a subsector for estab-lishments providing support activities for transportation. In addition, there are subsectors forestablishments that provide passenger transportation for scenic and sightseeing purposes, postalservices, and courier services.
51 Information
The Information sector comprises establishments engaged in producing and distributing informa-tion and cultural products, providing the means to transmit or distribute these products as well asdata or communications, and processing data. The main components of this sector are the pub-lishing industries, including software publishing, and both traditional publishing and publishingexclusively on the Internet; the motion picture and sound recording industries; the broadcastingindustries, including traditional broadcasting and those broadcasting exclusively over the Inter-net; the telecommunications industries; the industries known as Internet service providers andWeb search portals, data processing industries and the information services industries.
52 Finance and Insurance
The finance and insurance sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in financial transac-tions and/or in facilitating financial transactions. Three principal types of activities are identified:Raising funds by taking deposits and/or issuing securities and, in the process, incurring liabilities;pooling of risk by underwriting insurance and annuities; and providing specialized services facili-tating or supporting financial intermediation, insurance, and employee benefit programs. Mon-etary authorities charged with monetary control are also included in this sector.
53 Real Estate and Rental and Leasing
The real estate and rental and leasing sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in rent-ing, leasing, or otherwise allowing the use of tangible or intangible assets, and establishmentsproviding related services. This sector also includes establishments engaged in managing realestate for others, selling, renting and/or buying real estate for others, and appraising real estate.
54 Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
The professional, scientific, and technical services sector comprises establishments that specializein performing professional, scientific, and technical activities for others. The establishments inthis sector specialize according to expertise and provide to a variety of industries and house-holds. Activities performed include: legal advice and representation; accounting, bookkeeping,and payroll services; architectural, engineering, and specialized design services; computer ser-vices; consulting services; research services; advertising services; photographic services; transla-tion and interpretation services; veterinary services; and other professional, scientific, and techni-cal services.
55 Management of Companies and Enterprises
The management of companies and enterprises sector comprises establishments that hold thesecurities of companies and enterprises for the purpose of owning a controlling interest or influ-encing management decisions or establishments (except government establishments) that admin-ister, oversee, and manage establishments of the company or enterprise and that normally under-take the strategic or organizational planning and decision-making role of the company orenterprise. Establishments that administer, oversee, and manage may hold the securities of thecompany or enterprise.

56 Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services
The administrative and support and waste management and remediation services sector com-prises establishments performing routine support activities for the day-to-day operations of otherorganizations. Establishments in many sectors of the economy often undertake these essentialactivities in-house. 61 Educational Services
The educational services sector comprises establishments that provide instruction and training ina wide variety of subjects. This instruction and training is provided by specialized establishments,such as schools, colleges, universities, and training centers. These establishments may be pri-vately owned and operated for profit or not for profit, or they may be publicly owned and oper-ated. They may also offer food and accommodation services to their students.
62 Health Care and Social Assistance
The health care and social assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care andsocial assistance for individuals. The sector includes both health care and social assistancebecause it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the boundaries of these two activities.The services provided by establishments in this sector are delivered by trained professionals. Allindustries in the sector share this commonality of process, namely, labor inputs of health practi-tioners or social workers with the requisite expertise. Many of the industries in the sector aredefined based on the educational degree held by the practitioners included in the industry.
71 Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation
The arts, entertainment, and recreation sector includes a wide range of establishments that oper-ate facilities or provide services to meet varied cultural, entertainment, and recreational interestsof their patrons. This sector comprises establishments that are involved in producing, promoting,or participating in live performances, events, or exhibits intended for public viewing, establish-ments that preserve and exhibit objects and sites of historical, cultural, or educational interest,and establishments that operate facilities or provide services that enable patrons to participate inrecreational activities or pursue amusement, hobby, and leisure time interests.
72 Accommodation and Food Services
The accommodation and food services sector comprises establishments providing customers withlodging and/or preparing meals, snacks, and beverages for immediate consumption. The sectorincludes both accommodation and food services establishments because the two activities areoften combined at the same establishment.
81 Other Services (except Public Administration)
The other services (except public administration) sector comprises establishments engaged inproviding services not specifically provided for elsewhere in the classification system. Establish-ments in this sector are primarily engaged in activities such as equipment and machinery repair-ing, promoting or administering religious activities, grantmaking, advocacy, and providing dry-cleaning and laundry services, personal care services, death care services, pet care services,photofinishing services, temporary parking services, and dating services.
(Not covered are the Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, and Hunting sector (NAICS 11), and the PublicAdministration sector (NAICS 92). The economic census excludes Petroleum Refineries (NAICS32411) for the Virgin Islands only.)

BASIS OF REPORTING
The economic census is conducted on an establishment basis. A company operating at more thanone location is required to file a separate report for each store, factory, shop, or other location.Each establishment is assigned a separate industry classification based on its primary activity andnot that of its parent company.
GEOGRAPHIC AREA CODING
Accurate and complete information on the physical location of each establishment is required totabulate the census data for municipalities, districts, towns, villages, counties, municipios, orislands. Respondents were required to report their physical location (street address or locationdescription and municipality, district, town, village, county, municipio, or island) if it differed fromtheir mailing address. For those establishments that did not provide acceptable information onphysical location, location information from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax forms or fromthe previous census is used as a basis for coding.

Puerto Rico Economic censuses were conducted beginning with a census of manufactures for1909 and continuing at 10-year intervals through 1949, excepting 1929. Wholesale and retailtrades and services industries were included as part of the economic censuses for 1939. Start-ing with 1949 through 2002, the censuses of wholesale and retail trades and service industrieshave been conducted concurrently with the census of manufactures. The census of constructionindustries has been included since 1967. Congress has authorized the economic censuses to betaken at 5-year intervals covering years ending in 2 and 7.
American Samoa The 2002 Economic Census is the first economic census conducted. Hence-forth, the census will follow every 5 years.

Guam. There is one report for all covered kinds of business. Tables present data for Guam and itselection districts.
Virgin Islands. There is one report for all covered kinds of business. The report presents data forthe Virgin Islands as a whole. COMPARABILITY OF THE 1997 AND 2002 CENSUSES
The 2002 Economic Census of Island Areas is the first to present data based on the new NorthAmerican Industry Classification System (NAICS). Previous census data were presented accordingto the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System developed in the 1930s. Due to this change,comparability between census years is limited. NAICS identifies new industries, redefines con-cepts, and develops classifications to reflect changes in the economy.

The 2002 Economic Census covers more of the economy than any previous census. New for 2002are data on information, finance and insurance, real estate, and health-care industries. The scopeof the census includes virtually all sectors of the economy.

RELIABILITY OF DATA
All data compiled in this report originated from a complete enumeration and, therefore, are notsubject to sampling variability. However, the data are subject to nonsampling errors. Nonsamplingerrors can be attributed to many sources including: inability to identify all cases in the actual uni-verse; inability or unwillingness on the part of respondents to provide correct information; defini-tion and classification difficulties; response errors and bias; errors in collection or processing; mis-interpretation of questions; and other errors of recording, keying, and estimation for missing ormisreported data.
No direct measurement of these effects has been obtained. Precautionary steps were taken in allphases of the collection, processing, and tabulation of the data in an effort to minimize the effectsof nonsampling errors. More information on the reliability of the data is included in Appendix C,Methodology.
DISCLOSURE

El censo econmico es la fuente principal de datos acerca de la estructura y funcin de laeconoma. El censo provee informacin esencial para el gobierno, el comercio, la industria y elpblico en general. El censo econmico es requerido por el ttulo 13 del Cdigo de los EstadosUnidos (Secciones 131, 191 y 224) y por la Ley No. 11 de la legislatura del Estado Libre Asociadode Puerto Rico, que fuera aprobada el 27 de marzo de 1950. El ttulo 13 requiere que elNegociado del Censo realice el censo econmico cada 5 aos, cubriendo los aos que terminan en2 y 7.
El censo econmico proporciona una parte importante del sistema mediante el cual se preparanestimados compuestos, tales como el producto bruto, el insumo producto y otras estadsticas quedeterminan los cambios en la economa a corto plazo. Los datos del censo econmico se utilizande la siguiente manera:
Las agencias del gobierno federal que se dedican a la creacin de poltica pblica utilizan losdatos para observar las actividades econmicas y proveer asistencia a los negocios.
Los gobiernos locales utilizan los datos para evaluar las actividades comerciales e impuestosdentro de su jurisdiccin y para desarrollar programas que atraigan negocios.
Las asociaciones comerciales estudian tendencias en sus propias industrias y en lacompetencia, lo cual les permite mantener a sus miembros informados sobre cambios en elmercado.
Los negocios utilizan los datos para determinar mercados potenciales y analizar su propiaproduccin y ventas en comparacin a los promedios del rea geogrfica o la industria.
ALCANCE
Los datos del Censo Econmico del 2002 de las reas Insulares estn publicados por primera vezen base al Sistema de Clasificacin Norteamericano de la Industria, mejor conocido como NAICS(North American Industry Classification System). El sistema de clasificacin de la industria NAICSsustituye al Sistema de Clasificacin Industrial Uniforme (CIU) utilizado en 1997 y aos anteriores.Las publicaciones del 2002 para las reas Insulares incluyen los siguientes sectores de NAICS:
21 Minera
El sector minero se compone de establecimientos que extraen minerales naturales slidos, talescomo carbn y otros minerales; minerales lquidos, tal como el petrleo crudo; y los gases, talcomo el gas natural. El tipo ms comn de actividad minera en las reas insulares comprende laextraccin de piedra. El sector minero distingue dos actividades bsicas: operacin de minas yactividades de apoyo para minas. Los establecimientos son agrupados y clasificados segn elrecurso natural extrado o el que ser extrado. Las industrias incluyen establecimientos quedesarrollan minas, que extraen los recursos naturales y/o que preparan el mineral extrado.
22 Utilidades
El sector de utilidades se compone de establecimientos que se dedican a proveer los siguientesservicios de utilidades: energa elctrica, gas natural, suministro de vapor, abastecimiento de aguay el tratamiento de aguas negras. Las actividades asociadas con los servicios ofrecidos varansegn las utilidades: la energa elctrica incluye generacin, transmisin y distribucin de energa;el gas natural incluye la distribucin; el suministro de vapor incluye la provisin y/o la

distribucin; el abastecimiento de agua incluye el tratamiento y la distribucin; y el tratamiento deaguas negras incluye el recogido, el tratamiento y el desecho de desperdicios a travs de sistemasde alcantarillado y plantas de tratamiento de aguas negras.
23 Construccin
El sector de la construccin se compone de establecimientos que se dedican principalmente a laconstruccin de edificios o proyectos de ingeniera (tales como autopistas y sistemas deinfraestructura). Tambin se incluyen los establecimientos que se dedican principalmente a lapreparacin de lotes para la construccin nueva y a la segregacin de lotes para la construccinde edificios. El trabajo de construccin realizado puede incluir ampliaciones, alteraciones omantenimiento y reparacin. Los establecimientos que se dedican principalmente a producircomponentes especficos (por ejemplo albailera, pintura y trabajo elctrico), se les conocegeneralmente como contratistas de trabajos especializados.
Existen diferencias sustanciales en el tipo de equipo, personal y otros factores requeridos por losestablecimientos en este sector. Para destacar las diferencias y variaciones en las funcionesoperativas, este sector se divide en tres subsectores: Construccin de Edificios (Subsector 236),Construccin de Infraestructura e Ingeniera (Subsector 237) y Contratistas de TrabajosEspecializados (Subsector 238).

3133 Manufactura
El sector de manufactura se compone de establecimientos que se dedican a la transformacinmecnica, fsica o qumica de materiales, sustancias o componentes en nuevos productos. Elmontaje de las partes que componen los productos manufacturados se considera manufactura,excepto cuando la actividad se clasifica en el Sector 23, Construccin. En el sector de lamanufactura, los establecimientos se describen usualmente como plantas, fbricas o talleres yusan mquinas de fuerza motriz y equipo para el manejo de materiales. Los subsectores queforman parte del sector de manufactura, generalmente reflejan distintos procesos de produccinque estn relacionados los materiales, equipo de produccin y las destrezas del personal.

42 Comercio al por Mayor
El sector del comercio al por mayor se compone de establecimientos que se dedican a la venta demercanca al por mayor, generalmente sin transformacin alguna, y a prestar serviciosrelacionados con la venta de mercanca. El proceso de la venta al por mayor es la etapa intermediaen la distribucin de mercanca. Los mayoristas venden o tramitan la compra o venta deproductos para la reventa (esto es, los productos vendidos a otros mayoristas o detallistas),productos no perecederos o de capital que no son para el consumo o materias primas eintermedias y suministros utilizados en la produccin. Los mayoristas operan normalmente desdeun almacn u oficina. Este sector se compone de dos tipos principales de mayoristas: aqullosque venden productos por cuenta propia, conocidos como distribuidores al por mayor, y aqullosque tramitan ventas y compras para otros generalmente a base de una comisin o cuota.
4445 Comercio al Detal
El sector del comercio al detal se compone de establecimientos que se dedican a la venta demercanca al por menor, generalmente sin transformacin alguna, y a prestar serviciosrelacionados con la venta de mercanca. El proceso de la venta al detal es la etapa final en ladistribucin de mercanca. Los detallistas venden mercanca en cantidades pequeas al pblico engeneral. Este sector se compone de dos tipos principales de detallistas: detallistas con y sintienda. Los detallistas con tienda operan desde una ubicacin fsica para atraer a los clientes. Los

detallistas sin tienda tambin sirven al pblico en general, ponindose en contacto con clientes yutilizando mtodos de mercadeo, tales como comerciales de radio y televisin, transmisin ypublicacin de anuncios, publicacin de catlogos o de catlogos electrnicos, ventas de puertaen puerta, demostraciones en casas, venta desde quioscos o puestos temporeros (vendedoresambulantes, excepto los que venden comida) y la distribucin a travs de mquinas que vendenmercanca.
4849 Transportacin y Almacenaje
El sector de transportacin y almacenaje incluye las industrias que proporcionan el transporte depasajeros y carga, el almacenamiento de artculos, transporte turstico y actividades de apoyorelacionadas con diferentes modos de transportacin. Los modos de transportacin son areos,ferroviarios, martimos, carreteras y tuberas. Este sector distingue tres tipos bsicos deactividades: subsectores para cada modo de transportacin, un subsector para almacenaje y unsubsector para establecimientos que proporcionan actividades relacionadas con la transportacin.Adems, existen subsectores para establecimientos que proporcionan transporte turstico apasajeros, servicios postales y servicios de mensajero.
51 Informacin
El sector de informacin se compone de establecimientos que se dedican a la produccin ydistribucin de informacin y productos culturales, proporcionando los medios para transmitir odistribuir dichos productos as como datos o comunicaciones y procesando los datos. Loscomponentes principales de este sector son las industrias editoriales, incluyendo la publicacin deprogramas de computadora, publicaciones tradicionales y aquellas que se publicanexclusivamente en el Internet; las industrias cinematogrficas y de grabacin de sonido;estaciones de radio y televisin e Internet; las industrias de telecomunicaciones; las industriasconocidas como proveedoras de servicios de Internet y portales de bsqueda, de procesamientode datos y de servicio de informacin.
52 Finanzas y Seguros
El sector de finanzas y seguros se compone de establecimientos que se dedican principalmente atransacciones financieras y/o a facilitar las transacciones financieras. Los tres tipos principales deactividades que se identifican en este sector son: la acumulacin de fondos tomando depsitosy/o emitiendo valores y contrayendo las obligaciones durante el proceso; la minimizacin delriesgo mediante la tramitacin de seguros y seguros de renta; y el suministro de serviciosespecializados que facilitan o apoyan la intervencin financiera, seguros y programas de beneficioal empleado. Las autoridades monetarias encargadas del control monetario tambin se incluyenen este sector.
53 Bienes Races y Alquiler y Arrendamiento
El sector de bienes races y alquiler y arrendamiento se compone de establecimientos que sededican principalmente a alquilar, arrendar o a permitir el uso de bienes tangibles o intangibles yestablecimientos que proveen servicios relacionados. Este sector incluye tambin losestablecimientos que se dedican al manejo de bienes races para otros, ya sea vendiendo,alquilando y/o comprando bienes races para otros y tasando los mismos.
54 Servicios Profesionales, Cientficos y Tcnicos
El sector de servicios profesionales, cientficos y tcnicos se compone de establecimientos que seespecializan en realizar trabajos profesionales, cientficos y tcnicos para otros. Losestablecimientos en este sector se especializan segn su pericia y proporcionan servicios a unavariedad de industrias e individuos. Las actividades realizadas incluyen: asesoramiento yrepresentacin legal; contabilidad, tenedura de libros y servicios de nmina; servicios dearquitectura, ingeniera y servicios especializados de diseo; servicios de computadora; serviciosde consultora; servicios de investigacin; servicios de publicidad; servicios fotogrficos; serviciosde traduccin e interpretacin; servicios veterinarios; y otros servicios profesionales, cientficos ytcnicos.

El sector de direccin de compaas y empresas se compone de establecimientos tenedores deacciones de compaas y empresas con el propsito de controlar o influenciar decisionesadministrativas o establecimientos (excepto los establecimientos de gobierno) que administran,supervisan y dirigen establecimientos de la compaa o empresa y que usualmente asumenresponsabilidad por la planificacin organizacional y estratgica y por decisiones de la compaao empresa. Los establecimientos que administran, supervisan y dirigen pueden tener acciones dela compaa o empresa.
56 Servicios Administrativos y Apoyo y Manejo de Desperdicios y Remediacin
El sector de servicios administrativos y apoyo y manejo de desperdicios y remediacin secompone de establecimientos que realizan actividades de apoyo relacionadas con las operacionesdiarias de otras organizaciones. En muchos sectores de la economa los establecimientos asumenen ocasiones la responsabilidad de dichas actividades. Los establecimientos en este sector seespecializan en una o ms actividades de apoyo y prestan dichos servicios a clientes en unavariedad de industrias y en algunos casos a individuos. Las actividades realizadas incluyen:administracin de oficinas, empleo, preparacin de documentos y servicios clericales,solicitaciones para ofrecer servicios, cobro, servicios de vigilancia y seguridad, limpieza yservicios de desecho de desperdicios.
61 Servicios Educacionales
El sector de servicios educacionales se compone de establecimientos que proporcionaninstruccin y entrenamiento sobre una amplia variedad de disciplinas. Dicha instruccin yentrenamiento son provistos por establecimientos especializados, tales como escuelas, colegios,universidades y centros de entrenamiento. Los establecimientos pueden ser privados u operadoscon o sin fines de lucro o pueden ser pblicos. Estos establecimientos tambin pueden ofrecercomida y servicios de alojamiento para sus estudiantes.
62 Cuidado de Salud y Asistencia Social
El sector del cuidado de salud y asistencia social se compone de establecimientos que proveencuidados de salud y asistencia social a individuos. El sector incluye cuidado de salud y asistenciasocial ya que ambos estn relacionados y es difcil distinguir sus actividades por separado. Losestablecimientos de este sector proveen servicios rendidos por profesionales entrenados. Todaslas industrias en el sector comparten procesos similares, especialmente la participacin deprofesionales de la salud o trabajadores sociales con la experiencia requerida. Muchas de lasindustrias en el sector estn definidas de acuerdo al grado de educacin adquirido por losprofesionales incluidos en esta industria.
71 Arte, Entretenimiento y Recreacin
El sector de artes, entretenimiento y recreacin incluye una amplia seleccin de establecimientosque operan localidades o proveen servicios para satisfacer una variedad de intereses culturales,de entretenimiento y recreacin para sus patrocinadores. Este sector se compone deestablecimientos que producen, promueven o participan en eventos o exhibiciones para el pblicoen vivo, establecimientos que se dedican a la conservacin y exhibicin de lugares de intershistrico, cultural o educacional y establecimientos que operan localidades o prestan serviciosque permiten la participacin de los patrocinadores en actividades de recreacin, entretenimientoy pasatiempo.

El sector de otros servicios (excepto administracin pblica) se compone de establecimientos quese dedican a prestar servicios que no estn clasificados en otra parte del sistema NAICS. Losestablecimientos de este sector se dedican principalmente a actividades tales como reparacin deequipo y maquinaria, promocin o administracin de actividades religiosas, actividadescaritativas, actividades cvicas y servicios de lavandera y lavado en seco, servicios de cuidadopersonal, servicios funerarios, servicios de cuidado de mascotas, revelado de fotografa,estacionamientos temporeros y servicios de encuentro de parejas.
(Los sectores de Agricultura, Silvicultura, Pesca, y Caza (NAICS 11) y el sector de AdministracinPblica (NAICS 92) no estn incluidos. El censo econmico excluye las Refineras de Petrleo(NAICS 32411) para la Islas Vrgenes solamente.)

BASE INFORMATIVA
El censo econmico se realiza a base de establecimientos. A toda compaa que administreestablecimientos en ms de una localidad se le pide que complete un informe por cada una de laslocalidades. A cada establecimiento se le asigna una clasificacin industrial de acuerdo a suactividad principal y no a la de su compaa matriz.
CODIFICACIN DEL REA GEOGRFICA
Para tabular los datos censales por municipalidades, distritos, pueblos, aldeas, condados,municipios o islas se necesita obtener informacin certera y completa sobre la ubicacin fsica decada establecimiento. Se le pidi a los respondedores que indicaran la ubicacin fsica (calle ynmero o descripcin de la ubicacin fsica y municipalidad, distrito, pueblo, aldea, municipio oisla), si la misma era diferente a la direccin de envo. Los establecimientos que noproporcionaron informacin aceptable sobre la ubicacin fsica, fueron codificados en base a lainformacin rendida en su informe sobre impuestos al Servicio de Rentas Internas (IRS) o en basea la informacin obtenida en censos anteriores.

Informes Impresos y Electrnicos. Todos los resultados del Censo Econmico del 2002estarn disponibles en la pgina del Negociado del Censo en el Internet (www.census.gov) y endiscos digitales (DVD-ROMs) para la venta por medio del Negociado del Censo. El sistema defuente de datos American FactFinder que tambin se encuentra en la pgina del Negociado delCenso en el Internet, permite la seleccin de datos y ofrece la opcin de bajar los archivos. Tabulaciones Especiales. Se pueden obtener tabulaciones especiales de los datos recopiladosen el Censo Econmico del 2002, ya sea electrnicamente o en forma tabular, dependiendo de ladisponibilidad del personal y el tiempo. Los datos se presentarn en forma de resumen sujetos alas mismas normas que prohiben la divulgacin de informacin confidencial (incluyendo elnombre, la direccin, tipo de negocio u otros datos referentes a compaas o establecimientoscomerciales independientes) a las que estn sujetas las publicaciones regulares.
El costo de las tabulaciones especiales es reembolsable. Solicitudes para un estimado del costodeben ser acompaadas por especificaciones sobre el tipo y formato de las tabulacionesestadsticas que se desean. INFORMACIN HISTRICA
El censo econmico ha sido realizado cada 5 aos para las siguientes reas, excepto donde seindica a continuacin:

Puerto Rico El censo de manufactura de 1909 marc el comienzo del censo econmico enPuerto Rico, que hasta 1949 se realiz a intervalos de 10 aos exceptuando el ao 1929. Lasactividades del comercio al por mayor y al detal, al igual que las de las industrias de serviciosfueron incluidas como parte del censo econmico de 1939. Por primera vez en 1949 hasta el2002, los censos de comercio al por mayor y comercio al detal e industrias de servicios fuerontomados al mismo tiempo que el censo de manufactura. El censo de las industrias deconstruccin ha estado incluido desde 1967. El Congreso ha dado su autorizacin para que loscensos econmicos se realicen cada 5 aos, cubriendo los aos que terminan en 2 y 7.
Samoa Americana El Censo Econmico del 2002 es el primer censo realizado en esta rea. Enlo sucesivo, dicho censo se realizar cada 5 aos.
La variedad de industrias incluidas en el censo econmico de las Islas Marianas del Norte, Guam,Islas Vrgenes y Puerto Rico se ampli en el 2002. Los sectores que se incluyeron por primera vezen el 2002 son informacin, finanzas y seguros, bienes races, cuidado de salud y otras industriasde servicio.

INFORMES
Los siguientes informes son publicados para el Censo Econmico del 2002 de las reas Insulares:
Islas Marianas del Norte. Existe un informe para todos los tipos de negocios incluidos en elcenso. El mismo presenta datos para las Islas Marianas del Norte y tres municipalidades: Saipan,Tinian y Rota. Las Islas del Norte (Northern Islands) estn excluidas en esta publicacin ya que nose registraron actividades comerciales para esta municipalidad.
Guam. Existe un informe para todos los tipos de negocios incluidos en el censo. Las tablaspresentan datos para Guam y sus distritos.
Islas Vrgenes. Existe un informe para todos los tipos de negocios incluidos en el censo. Elinforme presenta los datos para las Islas Vrgenes en su totalidad. La informacin tambin espresentada para St. Thomas y St. John (los datos de ambas islas fueron combinados para evitarproblemas en la divulgacin), St. Croix y los pueblos de Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted yFrederiksted.
Samoa Americana. Existe un informe para todos los tipos de negocios incluidos en el censo. Elmismo presenta los datos para Samoa Americana, distritos y condados.
Puerto Rico. Existen tres informes que incluyen diferentes tipos de negocio:

Los datos sonpresentados para las regiones comerciales y los municipios de Puerto Rico. El informe tambinincluye los datos sobre las ventas de lneas de productos para el comercio al por mayor y aldetal en Puerto Rico, segn el tipo de negocio.
Construccin. Este informe presenta datos para los establecimientos de construccin segn laindustria y reas metropolitanas y municipios.
VALOR EN DLARES
Todas las cifras monetarias que se incluyen en este informe representan los precios actuales. Lasmismas estn expresadas en trminos de miles de dlares.
COMPARABILIDAD ENTRE LOS CENSOS DE 1997 Y DEL 2002
El Censo Econmico del 2002 de las reas Insulares es el primero en presentar datos censales enbase al nuevo Sistema de Clasificacin Norteamericano de la Industria (NAICS). Los datos censalesanteriores fueron presentados de acuerdo al Sistema de Clasificacin Industrial Uniforme (CIU),desarrollado en 1930. Debido al cambio en el sistema de clasificacin, la comparacin entre losaos censales es limitada. El sistema de NAICS identifica nuevas industrias, redefine conceptos ydesarrolla clasificaciones para reflejar los cambios en la economa.
El Censo Econmico del 2002 cubre ms sectores de la economa que ningn otro censo. Entre lossectores nuevos que se han incluido para el 2002, se encuentran datos sobre los sectores deinformacin, finanzas y seguro, bienes races e industrias de cuidado para la salud. El alcance deeste censo incluye casi todos los sectores de la economa.

CONFIABILIDAD DE LOS DATOS
Los datos recopilados en este informe se obtuvieron mediante una enumeracin completa, por lotanto, no estn sujetos a la variabilidad del muestreo. No osbtante, los datos estn sujetos aerrores ajenos al muestreo. Los errores ajenos al muestreo pueden ocurrir por muchas razones:incapacidad para identificar todos los casos en el universo, incapacidad o renuencia de parte delos respondedores para proveer la informacin correcta, dificultades con las definiciones yclasificaciones, errores y sesgos en las respuestas, errores en la recopilacin o procesamiento delos datos, mala interpretacin de las preguntas y otros errores en el registro y digitacin de losdatos y estimados que se utilizan para los rcords sin respuestas o respuestas incorrectas.
Hasta el momento, no ha sido posible medir con exactitud los efectos que causan estos errores.Sin embargo, se han tomado medidas de precaucin necesarias durante las fases de recopilacin,procesamiento y tabulacin de los datos para minimizar los efectos de los errores ajenos almuestreo. Refirase al Apndice C, Metodologa, para ms informacin sobre la confiabilidad delos datos.
DIVULGACIN
De acuerdo con la ley federal que rige los informes censales (ttulo 13 del Cdigo de los EstadosUnidos), los datos que se publican no divulgan las operaciones de un establecimiento o negocioen particular. Sin embargo, el nmero de establecimientos clasificados bajo un tipo de negocio noconstituye una divulgacin, por lo tanto, esta informacin puede ser publicada aunque otrainformacin sea suprimida. Las tcnicas empleadas para limitar la divulgacin son discutidas enwww.census.gov/epcd/ec02/disclosure.htm.
