CONTRACT MINE SUPPORT CAPABILITYDelivering underground infrastructureFORMATION OF McCONNELL DOWELL MASTERMYNE JOINT VENTURE; COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION FOR THE UNDERGROUND COAL SECTOR
MORE THAN JUST A MINING CONTRACTORMcConnell Dowell & Mastermyne have formed a highly capable team to enable the delivery of the underground infrastructure including the Cut & Cover, Drift Driveage and Ancillary Works.
McConnell Dowell and Mastermyne have formed a highly capable team of delivering underground infrastructure to the mining industry. This Joint Venture has been ‘Made-to-Mine’.
The McConnell Dowell and Mastermyne Joint Venture (MDMJV) unites the respective strengths of two of Australia’s strongest and most capable underground contractors from the civil infrastructure and coal mining sectors, forming arguably the most robust delivery team for “mine-to-market” projects. The McConnell Dowell Mastermyne Joint Venture provides resource owners and developers a total mine solution. Feasibility through to market delivery, we have the depth and capacity to offer all disciplines.MDMJV will provide the necessary step to change the underground coal sector for the safe and efficient delivery of mine access drives using rapid advance, full face tunnelling technology. This would in turn make resource access more efficient, cheaper, and safer. Our international and domestic workforces continue to show steady growth, with more than 10 000 staff combined and all with one culture and goal – to ensure we remain at the forefront.
Our people represent the best and brightest in their fields. We’re proud of the passion and success of our teams in striving to be the industry leaders, and it shows in our individual results – as a Joint Venture we are even more formidable. Our fundamental philosophy of finding creative solutions to engineering and construction challenges for clients has never changed, with ongoing relationships with our clients being one of our key strategies. We each have a track record of building long-term relationships with both national and international clients, which is testament to our innovative and client-focused capability. We believe that our Joint Venture is capable of providing superior advance rates and a safe work system within a fully compliant framework. This methodology will significantly change the face of Australian coal mines. It will enable a lower cost per unit of coal from underground mines, and through the use of innovation will reduce the number of people required to work underground.

PRECAST
The McConnell Dowell and Mastermyne Joint Venture (MDMJV) unites the respective strengths of two of Australia’s strongest and most capable underground contractors from the civil infrastructure and coal mining sectors, forming arguably the most robust delivery team for “mine-to-market” projects.
MDMJV Project Team were recognised for their safety record and management record during the course of the project. AngloAmerican approached McConnell Dowell Mastermyne (MDMJV) early 2015 to complete the TBM Drift works for Grosvenor Coal Mine.
The work scope included the following:• Installation of Drift Floor within Conveyor (CV) and Men
and Materials (MM) Drifts• Excavation and Shotcrete of Man Refuges• Installation and Commissioning of Blast Doors for CV and
MM Drifts• Installation of LED Lighting within CV and MM Drifts• Completion of Surface Portal Works at CV and MM
Portals• Concrete Ramp Pours at Pit Bottom from Installed Floor
Segments to Mine Pits• TBM Drift Fit-out works • Surface TBM Portal works including concrete ramp
construction, surface sump
MDMJV as a team brought the following value as a whole to the Grosvenor Coal Mine project:SCHEDULE OPTIMISATION
Started with 43 week programme and completed core work in 28 weeksPROCUREMENT OPTIMISATION
Smarter solutions proposed by the team saved Anglo significant costsQUALITY OUTCOMES
With systems and process the quality of work produced, with supporting documentation, was of the highest order. COLLABORATION
Having combined civil and mining skills, within the Anglo office, made for a dynamic and positive culture of a high performing team.
MDMJV worked closely with Anglo American to obtain all approvals and to ensure all management plans were implemented
without delaying construction programme.

Bogong Power Development Project
Mandalong Coal, Delta Decline
PROJECT SUMMARY:
The Bogong Power Development Project, awarded to McConnell Dowell by AGL Southern Hydro in September 2006, consists of a network of tunnels and shafts and the construction of a new underground hydro electric power station near the Victorian ski fields at Falls Creek. The power station forms part of AGL Southern Hydro’s strategic energy framework for the supply of green peak demand power. It harnesses the Rocky Valley and Pretty Valley branches of the East Kiewa River and existing water resources released from the Mackay Creek Power Station to generate 140MW of renewable power.
The construction of the underground power station included the excavation of the station box, a top down excavation utilising secant pile walls, rock anchors and excavation in rock to 25 m below the ground. The massive box was created from which 30,000 cubic metres of material was excavated,
and the power station structure required over 10,000 cubic metres of concrete.
Pivotal to the success of the power station is the co-ordination of the crucial mechanical equipment including turbines, generators, draft tubes and inlet valves and scroll casings. These massive individual pieces require installation as the power station is constructed from the depths of the excavation.
CHALLENGES
Being constructed in an alpine national park meant the project was highly scrutinised by AGL Southern Hydro and the EPA – and the results were exceptional. To quote AGL Southern Hydro’s Project Manager John Arnold: “The statutory authorities cannot speak highly enough about the work done by McConnell Dowell. The work they are doing is being used as a benchmark for future projects.”

This project required the excavation of a 6 m x 2.6 m decline, on a site that consisted of conglomerate and sandstone ranging up to 140 MPa in hardness.
McConnell Dowell employed a unique blast and drill option to meet the challenge.
A completely pneumatic system avoided the procurement risks presented by the flame-proofed electrical equipment and permanent
gas monitoring systems traditionally used within a decline.
The roof support crawler rig, custom
designed and built as part of the project, was the first of its kind in the world.
The project was awarded to McConnell Dowell by Centennial Coal and was completed within 18 months.
Mastermyne commenced its first development contract 14 years ago
at the Kestrel North Mine in Central Queensland. Since that initial project,
we have driven more than 200 km of roadways on 12 sites across
Queensland and New South Wales.

We have performed these services at many mines throughout QLD and NSW.
Mastermyne has developed an ISO9001 Quality Management System targeting our Polymeric Chemical processes and certification was obtained with SAI Global on 1 September 2014. This certification complements our existing AS4801 and ISO14001 certifications that cover the entire business including the Polymeric Chemical activities. Formal licensing to carry out Polymeric Chemical work in NSW coal mines was obtained in December 2014. Current licensed products include Strata Bond and Mineral Bond.
Working closely with our partners including Orica, DSI and BASF to offer a range of different products.
We are currently mobilising to complete strata injection around Wambo North’s longwall 10, 50psi seals.
