Using technology to reduce risks and increase rewards

The ability to mine the riches of the earth has taken giant strides forward with the use of innovative technologies. Mining processes are faster, safer and more rewarding.

McConnell Dowell, with its parent and partners continues to drive this progress.

Our parent company the Aveng Group are a world leader in the shaft-sinking and access-development market, and their capabilities embrace fabrication, construction, automation and the maintenance of process plants.

In partnership with Mastermyne, McConnell Dowell's investment in TBM technology is providing safe and efficient access for new mines currently in development.

Our mining and metals project focus is on:

• Providing game-changing technology to resource owners and developers

• The safe, compliant and efficient delivery of mine access drives using rapid advance, full-face tunnelling technology

• Making resource access more efficient, enabling a lower cost-per-unit from underground mines

• Using innovative methods to reduce the number of people required to work underground, and importantly, making it safer for those who still do

• Minimising disruption to local community life and preserving environmentally sensitive areas

Mandalong Coal, Delta Decline - Australia

This project required the excavation of a 6 m x 2.6 m decline, on a site that consisted of conglomerate and sandstone ranging up to 140 MPa in hardness. McConnell Dowell employed a unique blast and drill option to meet the challenge.

A completely pneumatic system avoided the procurement risks presented by the flame-proofed electrical equipment and permanent gas monitoring systems traditionally used within a decline. The roof support crawler rig, custom designed and built as part of the project, was the first of its kind in the world.

The project was awarded to McConnell Dowell by Centennial Coal and was completed within 18 months.

Delivering water systems that change lives for the better

Water management is critical to the health, wealth and growth of every community. So it stands to reason that the three major concerns for most local, state, district and federal governments are the uninterrupted and secure delivery of drinking-quality water, the efficient and safe removal of waste water, and the minimisation of flooding caused by storm water.

By working mainly underground and out-of-sight, McConnell Dowell constructs water systems to provide new and extended infrastructure capability with minimal impact on the public. We have been awarded a range of landmark projects because of our depth of experience in this area, and achieved considerable industry recognition for their successful outcomes.

Our water and waste water project focus is:

• Designing sustainable solutions that support economic growth

• Minimising energy usage, operational costs and environmental impact

• Enabling a cleaner environment, while improving or resolving water quality

• Increasing capacity and alleviating pressure on existing networks

• Reducing or relieving waste water and storm water flooding issues

• Coordinating construction activity with concurrent civil and building works, while maintaining safe and efficient traffic access

• Significantly reducing disruption and inconvenience to businesses, residents and traffic

• Supporting high levels of community engagement and working with local businesses

Rosedale WTP Ocean Outfall Project - New Zealand

This challenging project required the design and construction of a new outfall to discharge high-quality treated effluent out at sea. Encroaching on both sensitive ecological and stakeholder environments, the 3 km tunnel route stretched from the treatment plant to burrow 25 metres below the streets and parks of Mairangi Bay, before heading out a final 600 metres to join up with a 2 km pipeline laid beneath the seabed of the Rangitoto Channel.

McConnell Dowell was awarded the contract by the North Shore City Council in August 2007, and completed the project in October 2010.

Adopting a deep tunnel option and simplifying the route meant the Council benefited from a saving of NZ$7 million, and the residents of Mairangi Bay experienced far less disruption to their lives and businesses. A state-of-the-art Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM was manufactured specifically for the project and was the first of its type to be used in New Zealand.

Adelaide Desalination Plant - Australia

The Adelaide reverse-osmosis seawater desalination plant is the largest water infrastructure project ever completed in South Australia. Delivering 100 GL of desalinated water per annum, it meets about half of Adelaide’s total water needs. By providing a climate-independent source of drinking water it reduces reliance on the drought-prone Murray River.

The project was a massive undertaking involving all design and construction disciplines. It encompassed a range of initiatives aimed at minimising operating costs, environmental impact and energy use.

This Government funded project was awarded to McConnell Dowell as part of the Adelaide Aqua consortium in 2009, and finished in late 2012.

Our pipeline team, in a joint venture with Built Environs, also designed and built the transfer pipeline system which links the desalination plant to Adelaide’s existing water supply.

Ambuklao Hydropower Project -Philippines

Bringing power to the people

Generating and supplying sustainable ‘green’ power through hydropower plants has an impact on the wellbeing of a region’s people and economy, as well as the environment and local communities. A diverse range of skills and experience is needed to construct a hydropower plant, and effective coordination is pivotal. Managing the expectations and wellbeing of stakeholders is equally critical, as is delivering certainty of outcome.

Our proven track record and string of industry and environmental awards is testament to McConnell Dowell’s ability to construct successful new hydropower plants, as well as rehabilitating and recovering the investment in existing ones.

Our power infrastructure project focus is:

• Adding value through innovative solutions, resulting in significant cost reductions

• Using creative construction techniques to guarantee safety and environmental compliance

• Accelerated civil programmes which reduce construction time

• Overcoming (often extreme) logistical challenges

• End design and vision, ensuring that the finished project blends in and has a positive impact on the environment

• Effective community involvement and engagement to achieve a “no complaint solution”

• Community management and awareness programmes aimed at stakeholders and local authorities

• Safeguarding local residents and mitigating the impact of noise and vibrations caused by construction

• Providing economic support by locally sourcing and upskilling onsite staff

The first of its kind to be constructed in the Philippines and commissioned in 1956, the state-owned National Power Corporation’s hydropower plant harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. Inoperable from earthquake-attributed landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration, the plant was closed in 1999 and subsequently sold to SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP).

In 2008 McConnell Dowell was awarded the rehabilitation project which included a tunnel and shafts network and new intake and outlet structures.

Wide-ranging logistical complexities had to be overcome including restricted accessibility and communications, volcanic activity, landslides and subsidence promoted by rainfall saturation. Power was restored in 2011.
