Today’s Readings
Ezekiel 2:2-5
Psalm 123
2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Mark 6:1-6
OBSTACLES
pel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too some-times encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul en-courage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gos-
Treasures From Our Tradition Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confed-erate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serv-ing in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and of-ten received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They com-forted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Family Assistance Food Collection Next Weekend, July 14/15
Family Assistance has identified the third Sunday of each month for the collection of food from parishioners attending Mass. Donated food is distributed to fam-ilies in need from the Ministry's Food Pantry on Thursday afternoons. No one is turned down. To service the need of the families who seek food from our pantry, we need at least 200 bags of food every month. This feeds approximately 800 people per month. Our need for food assistance continues to increase every year. We are in need of canned meat, canned tuna, canned soup, and canned beans. Volunteers are welcome, please contact the Family Assistance Ministry (714) 974-9728 The third Sunday of each month is also Green Envelope Sunday. Your donations from the green envelopes are the source of funds that enable Family Assistance to provide financial aid to working poor families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Should you have any ques-tions, please contact Mike Weller at (714) 974-9728. Thank you for your gen-erous support!

Shipwrecked VBS Nearly 500 campers and volunteers had an AMAZING week being “Shipwrecked!” A super fun and faith-filled experience was had by all as adults and teens came together to host an amaz-ing Vacation Bible School last week. Kids were treated to a week of song, dance, crafts, skits and super great games all while celebrating their faith amongst both old and new friends. Smiles and giggles permeated throughout the week as kids learned about God in exciting and joyful ways. To ensure all were cooled off during a sunny and hot day, water-filled spray bottles and water games were a must… Definitely a highlight for all. A HUGE thank you to all our dedicated volunteers and Directors for bringing our Parish children closer to God and their faith through this fun adventure! Stay tuned for more pics and updates on this amazing week in upcoming bulletins.
