"GET TO KNOW DENMARK'S QUADRON." JAY-Z
Newly signed to Epic Records, rising electro-soul stars Quadron havecaptured the attention of some of music’s biggest names and can boast tohaving Jay-Z, Adele, Mark Ronson and Tyler The Creator as fans of theirmusic. The Danish duo comprising of Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and RobinHannibal’s new found stardom stems from the outpouring of love for their2009 self-titled release, an LP which through Robin’s varied productionstyles and Coco’s crisp vocals on tracks such as ‘Day’, ‘Pressure’ and‘Average Fruit’ makes for a pleasingly captivating listening sonic experience.www.myspace.com/quadronquadron
On meeting each other what is it that stood out?COCO: I was already a fan of Robin. A friendplayed me some Boom Clap Bachelors songsand I knew right away that I wanted to workwith Robin. His sound was so much biggerthan Copenhagen and he shared a love for soulmusic. He just had the music in him above anyof the other guys I had worked with prior. Heeven pulled off singing without really knowinghow, it sounded amazing I was so happy heagreed to work with me! ROBIN: She was areally good performer; it felt natural for her tobe on a stage. There was a sense of ease andcomfort that flowed through the room whenshe sang. You believed every word. she is alsogreat person!
Is your music appreciated in Denmark as it isin the UK & US? ROBIN: That's a hard one… They were neverunappreciative, there just wasn't a very bigsoul scene when the record came out; but thatseems to have developed, hopefully we caninfluence that further. We feel very blessed andfortunate that the UK and US have shown suchinterest in us. COCO: It sometimes seems a bitironic that at home they are catching on nowwe are becoming successful in the states andthe rest of the world. But we are slowly gettingon the map in the Danish music scene andreally appreciate their attention.Has being categorised “electro-pop” in themainstream press helped in achieving “criticalacclaim” simply because it is an easierconcept to grasp than Scandinavian Soul? ROBIN: I'm not sure what we are; to me labelsare always a bit useless. I think the mostinteresting music is the one you can't reallylabel.
But critical acclaim is a nice thing; obviouslyyou want people to like the music you make. COCO: Genres change so much: what is taggedas soul music today sounds so different to soulback in the day, the same with RnB and Pop.
Musicians are experimenting a lot more thesedays, and are stepping out of their boxes, creating new sounds. I think we would just callour music soul music because we put a lot ofsoul into it.
If there a song or lyric that fully conveysQuadron's musical message that you’d behappy with as a fans point of reference? COCO: It is really important for us to createALBUMS not just songs. It's a total experience. We believe in balance, when we write songs wetry to have a good mix of different emotions, soit's not just a dance song or just a ballad, welike the songs to push more than one button ata time. Lyrically, I am still developing as asongwriter, so would hate to pick one thatstands for our message, maybe if you ask mein 30 years I’ll have one.
Of the support from the top level of celebrityand fans can you be more appreciative of one?And which really made you realise "we'vemade it?"ROBIN: They all matter in different ways. Someof the support from celebrities is also some ofour idols, for them to even have listened to ourmusic is a big honour. The everyday music fanis equally as important, they are the onesbuying the records, coming to shows, bloggingand tweeting about us and spreading the word.COCO: Knowing that some of our idolsappreciate our music is more than amazing. But that fact doesn't make us sound better. Ihave been thinking a lot about "making it", Idon't think it's a feeling that can come from theworld outside with recognition and pats on theback. I think it's about a point of achievementin your own personal expectations. If 10-yearold Coco could see the Coco I am now, shewould definitely think I made it, but I definitelyfeel like there’s a long way to go for Quadron still!
“We are about to put out new music this fallwith a full new album to follow at the top ofnext year.”

THE TROGGSNo-one could forget ‘Wild Thing’ – but The Troggs have more songs totheir name than that seminal ‘60s hit. Hailed by some as “the first Britishpunk band”, these garage rockers turned out stone-cold classics like WithA Girl Like You’, ‘I Can’t Control Myself’ and ‘Love Is All Around’ (the latteran international chart-topper in the hands of Wet Wet Wet).
Tonight, founder member and guitarist Chris Britton and ‘60s-era bassistPeter Lucas hook up with guest vocalist Chris Allen (The Animals) to proveThe Troggs’ brand of raw, uncompromising rock music has lost none of itspotency over the years.
