Introduction This document is written in English in order to simplify any discussion with potential international customers/partners, in order for them to have a clear understanding of the game. It is highly important to note that English is also the “computer games development” language of the world. This document confirms our hopes that a car driving game is the appropriate medium to inform young people of the hazards of drinking and driving while, at the same time, having fun, playing a great computer game. This document outlines the fundamentals of such a product. We are very pleased to say that we strongly feel that this fine line of education, dealing with a serious issue and entertainment has been balanced and it works.
Loading Screen When Starting the Game The loading screen consists of a black and white photograph of a small suburban street that fades in. As the game is loaded from the hard drive, the screen slowly fades to red and a soundtrack is playing. The track is a mix of people talking about someone in third person that they are clearly, closely tied to, (please refer to Amused to Death by Roger Waters). The voices go on to describe that person’s habits, personalities and making general remarks about them.

Main Menu When the game is fully loaded the player can choose to;
• Create Player
The player selects Gender, Age, Name, and Weight, Height and favorite drinks and alcohol. These profiles are saved as player’s name and can be loaded at a later stage during game play.
• Load Player There is an unlimited amount of Players to be loaded. Game Progress and other information are stored in the players’ profile. • Options
The player can change video, audio and control options.
• Quit Game Exit and return to Windows

Game Types After loading an existing Player or creating a new one, there are two different types of playing Test Driver. These two modes are dependant on each other.
• Story Mode The player uses his/her profile to progress in the game. Missions can only be locked up by “Mission Approval,” meaning that he accomplished the required tasks set out by the game.
• Free Mode
By successfully completing missions in Story Mode, the Free Mode unlocks new cars, tracks and general features. This mode should be considered as “have fun driving around”.
• Knowledge Test The player goes straight to the knowledge based questions section. No driving or racing is included. This section is to be the main link to internet based activities. By playing this mode, the player can study and prepare for the questions in Story Mode.
• Back Go back to Main Menu.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
Basic Game Premises There are certain rules that apply to the player’s progression in the game. The following factors make up the game.
• The player can drive a car at his/her own desired speed and style. The consequences if the player is driving too fast, too slow or recklessly will be a lower overall rating score and possible mission Failure.
• If the player hurts or damages anything or anyone, self included, while
driving, the mission is an automatic Failure. • If the player chooses to consume alcohol in a mission, his/her overall
rating will automatically be lowered to the level where he/she will be obliged to answer 1-5 knowledge based questions correctly in order to progress to the next mission.
• All information, mission feedback, Knowledge Tests and dialogue between
the player and the game are done through a “virtual journalist”.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
Story Mode Story Mode is based around the player starting each mission in a restaurant environment. The player is thought to be a junior photographer, working for the local youth magazine. The overall story arc is about a famous rock/pop band is visiting the city. The main goal is to arrange a photo session with the band and ultimately fly with them to Hollywood where they have their next concert. During the game the player will receive side jobs from the Chief Editor such as go and do an interview with person X or go the office to get a new assignment. The view is 1st person and he/she sits at a dinner table. On the other side of this table is his/her date/friend. There are a number of items (selectables) on the table. These items become accessible as the player progresses. These are:
• Drinks Player’s choice • Car keys. Start Mission • A partially eaten dessert on a plate. Exit Back to Menu
By scanning the mouse pointer over any of the items, a text box appears informing the player about the option. Dragging the pointer over the car keys will inform him/her details about the mission.
• Left-clicking on a beverage increases the consumption of 1 drink. • Right-clicking the beverage decreases the consumption of that drink.
When the player has completed his/her selections in terms of intake, he may start his/her mission by clicking on the car keys on the table.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
OSD At all times throughout the game, including the restaurant segment, there are five golden stars, clearly visible in the upper center of the screen. Whenever the player consumes alcohol or drives recklessly, a piece of the star is removed. When all of the stars are gone (outline still visible), the player has failed his/her mission. The Golden Stars represent the foundation for the entire game in regards to traffic behavior. More about the score system under section Driving Review and Statistical Presentation.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
Visual Effects The visual effects of consuming alcohol will be evident for the player, such as blurriness, contrasts, tunnel vision. Field of view and mouse control are affected by the level of consumption of the alcoholic beverages on the table.
Car Selection In car selection the view is still in 1st person view. The player can see his/her hand holding a set of car keys with a remote key access.
• By pointing at a car and press left mouse button the player can select (open) his/her car of choice. The typical car response, flashing headlights and de-activating alarm sound, is played to confirm his/her car selection.
• Cars in the car park that are locked for the player will not respond to the
remote key access.
• By pointing at the elevator/exit area, the player can return to the restaurant and reset his/her choices.
Driving Segment After choosing a car, the player is in the driver’s seat in his/her vehicle, outside the restaurant. By looking at the GPS-display/map in the car, the player is informed where to go in the city for the specific mission. Using the keyboard or mouse (optional), he/she is now in control of the car. The following parameters are included in each mission:
• Time of day daylight/twilight/night • Weather clear/rain/snow/fog • Traffic intensity light/medium/heavy
It is not necessary for the player to follow traffic regulations such as speed limits, red lights etc, however, damaging or hurting anything or anyone, at a certain level, during the driving segment will lead to Mission Failure.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
Driving Review and Statistical Presentation After a driving segment, regardless of successful completion or failure, the player is presented with a screen showing his/her results. The animated picture of Chief Editor is presented in the left corner of the screen. The player can hear his voice as he reads the below data to the player. These include:
• Average speed with comments. • Average traffic performance with comments. • Level of intoxication and its effect on the above. • Overall rating score based on all of the above.
Player ratings are compared independently by speed, traffic performance and level of intoxication to actual statistics held by the game and presented to show real life numbers and facts of alcohol related traffic accidents & incidents before the player is given his/her overall rating. In this section, the player will understand why he/she lost the amount of Golden Stars that he/she did during the driving segment.
Game Progression The ability to progress through the game is directly related to the Player’s overall rating scores at the end of each driving segment. The player’s overall rating may be low regardless of their level of intoxication if he/she drives recklessly. In the case of a failing rating score (parameters to be determined), the player is presented with a set of 5 knowledge based questions derived from information given in the Statistical Presentation. Regardless of how many Golden Stars the player has after a Driving Segment, he/she will need at least 4 stars to continue to the next Mission. The Player must successfully complete the set of questions to refill the Golden Stars in order to move on to the next Driving Segment, which picks up again in the restaurant environment. At this time, the Player is given a new Mission, with all Selectables reset.
Game Over The game ends if the player has no stars left. Hitting or running over a pedestrian immediately reduces the stars to zero and therefore ends the game.

Unlocking Bonus Features When the player completes a driving segment or have answered all questions correctly in a knowledge based questionnaire, bonus items are unlocked. These include:
• New tracks (Hollywood including the Sunset Strip) • New car (Car 6) • New questions • New driving segment missions
Internet Support, Added Values and Future Campaigns This subject needs to be discussed in further detail. Addgames did have activities on home pages etc. A quick phone conference would be sufficient for us in order flesh out this chapter of the document.
Design Document Version 1.0 © 2005 Test Driver HB
Mini-games When parking the car at certain locations, the player gets access to mini games. These can be played and the score is saved for each player. These games are very simple 2D games very much like games on a mobile phone. Funky Town: Black Jack Friends Apartment: Pac-Man Car 5: Cannon-Ball game (like Missile Command) Mall of the Universe: Smack a Rodent

General Art Treatment It is important to have the player placed in a world that is a combination of imagination and reality. This is to give him/her a feeling that the game is not real, while the consequences of certain decisions are applicable to real life. The presentation of any art segment in the game has to be interesting and eye catching to compensate for the general gameplay that can be perceived as slow and stale. Presentation treatment needs to be fast and action packed.
Restaurant art style After the Player has created his/her profile and as the main menu is being drawn, several glowing blue lines are shot from every direction of the screen. These lines draw the restaurant/drinking location in a wire-frame layer. Following that, large pieces of the forming room are bombarding the screen and placed in their respective positions (Please refer to Matrix movies for references). The completed scene then shines in bright yellow and white, fading back to normal, leaving the final view of the restaurant.
Car Selection art style When the scene changes from the restaurant to the car selection menu, the blue lines and bricks are disappearing the same way they appeared. The car selection menu appears the same way as the restaurant menu had. This style is repeated when going from the car selection to the actual in-game graphics as the Player begins his/her driving segment.
Car’s art style The game will hold 5 cars in total, ranging from the a simple model to the high end type of car. More cars can be downloaded.

OSD (On-Screen-Display) Art Style Golden Stars
• The 5 stars are located on the center top of the screen at any time of the game.
• The stars are pulsating with a golden glow. • Whenever a star or star piece vanishes, due to reckless driving or intake
of alcohol, there will be an explosion of stardust together with a sound effect of shattering glass. The only trace remaining of the star is its outline.
• When all of the stars have vanished, the white outline of the stars will pulsate with a blur effect.
• When only the white outlines of the 5 stars are left and the Player makes one final mistake, all of the stars’ outlines will explode together with a sound effect just as the example above.
