Robert p Dilworth He Who Sees Himself Going 1986 Oil 54 x 45
Reflections The Ore This exhibition is an attempt to reflect the dreams
of a people - dreams realized and dreams deferred The works on display provide an indication of the sensibilities aspirations and stylistic diversity of contemporary black visual artists from the Chicago area These artists are creative individuals with widely disparate intentions ideas and goals yet perhaps when viewed together their works can be seen to make a collective statement
Conceived by the Black Student Union of the College of Lake County this exhibition is part of an ongoing spring semester program to celebrate the anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jrs birthday The twenty exhibiting artists are all represented by the Isobel Neal Gallery of Chicago which deals exclusively in work by African-American visual artists
Art has long been employed as a vehicle to give tang ible form to the intangible realm of the imagination from whimsical fantasies to grandiose visions The artist manifests his or her dreams and tries to communicate them to others either as an Ind ividual expression or by touch ing on some common aspect of the human condition In this sense each artist is echoing the words of Dr King by stating through his or her visual imagery that I Have a Dream
Exhibiting artists working in this subjective vein include painters Robert p Dilworth Calvin B Jones Mary Reed Daniel and sculptor Geraldine

McCullough Dilworths He Who Sees Himself Going contains three enigmatic figures wearing deviations of African masks set within a surreal dream-like landscape In Maskamorphosis by Jones faces dissolve into an abstraction derived from the geometric forms colors and textures found in African masks Daniels Alzada 2 reflects her interest in the African-American lifestyle as well as her concern with color and neo-primitive form McCulloughs sculptures reflect the influence of African art and religious symbolism yet her works are arranged in a unique and highly personalized fashion
Working in a more objective fashion are the artists Barlow Willie L Carter and Garrett Whyte Barlows charcoal drawing Was It Just A Dream depicts in a blur the seconds following the assassination of Dr King when for a moment the dream turned into a nightmare Carters Freight Foreman is an insightful portrait of a man surrounded by the objects of his trade Little Blue by Whyte speaks of isolation in a sometimes hostile world By chronicling their times these three artists are filtering their images through their life experiences
All these works reflect the African-American culture in ways both subtle and overt Images from the past present future and that which is without time come together to make a collective statement about an experience - the experience of twenty black artists reflecting on their own dreams Steve Jones Gallery Curator
