■ A single dose of enoxaparin sodium prevented theoccurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in airlinetravellers, report investigators from the LONFLIT IIIstudy. In this study, 248 evaluable travellers who hada history of heart disease or stroke received aspirin400mg once daily for 3 days (n = 84), a single dose ofenoxaparin sodium 0.01 ml/kg (82), or no treatment(controls), prior to undertaking an airline flight of > 10hours.* The incidence of thrombotic events wassignificantly lower in the enoxaparin sodium group(0% incidence of DVT and 1 case of superficial clot),compared with the aspirin group (3.6% and 2 cases)and controls (4.8% and 2 cases). The researchersconclude that a single dose of enoxaparin sodiumprior to prolonged air travel, ‘is an importantconsideration’ in patients at high risk for developingDVT.* The first dose of aspirin was administered 12 hours before, andthe dose of enoxaparin sodium 2–4 hours before, air travelcommenced.
