Enoxaparin sodium prevents DVT associated with prolonged air travel

Inpharma 1315 - 24 Nov 2001 A single dose of enoxaparin sodium prevented the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in airline travellers, report investigators from the LONFLIT III study. In this study, 248 evaluable travellers who had a history of heart disease or stroke received aspirin 400mg once daily for 3 days (n = 84), a single dose of enoxaparin sodium 0.01 ml/kg (82), or no treatment (controls), prior to undertaking an airline flight of > 10 hours. * The incidence of thrombotic events was significantly lower in the enoxaparin sodium group (0% incidence of DVT and 1 case of superficial clot), compared with the aspirin group (3.6% and 2 cases) and controls (4.8% and 2 cases). The researchers conclude that a single dose of enoxaparin sodium prior to prolonged air travel, ‘is an important consideration’ in patients at high risk for developing DVT. * The first dose of aspirin was administered 12 hours before, and the dose of enoxaparin sodium 2–4 hours before, air travel commenced.
