your patrol you can swap with another member who has the same awards as you.
Remember to wear
your full uniform when on patrol, this

Patrol uniforms are
only for the beach, so please remember a change of clothes.
Place all hand held
radios in the chargers, making sure the orange light
In the hut on the cupboard doors is the Patrol roster with a scenario to do for each patrol until the end of season. Please make sure you go through these as it is important to keep your skills up, instead of leaving it to the proficiency once a year. It is also a good refresher and makes your patrol go much quicker.
Stinger drags are well under way, but did you know? drags are only to be commenced in the wind is blowing 15 knots or less with waves 0.5 meters or less? Remember to still record in the Marine Stinger Log Book ―too rough to drag‖ with all other relevant details.
UNIFORMS: If you do not have a complete patrol
uniform (this includes your cap! ) please email Peta at
Message from the Club Captain
Patrolling our beaches was the sole reason for the formation of Surf Life Saving Clubs in the early years. Just look at how much it has grown in the last Century,
there are so many different areas in our organisation that you’ll never be short of one
to choose from!
I thought the article on the next page would help clarify the significance of what it means to be a patrolling member, to the greater community and each individual we
speak to on our beach, we do have an effect.
Having said this, please note there will be changes to some aspects of patrol for next season. Remembering it is a team effort I would like thank our Patrol Captains and Patrol Members for their time and efforts so far this season. With one month of the
patrolling season left and the peak part of our stinger season starting, our continued
vigilance is important.
Also just a reminder to our members that the Patrol Captain on duty at that time has final say on patrol duties, the goings on of the beach and patrolling members roles, it is a big responsibility to undertake and I sincerely thank those members who stepped
up this season.
Have a great summer and as always please don’t hesitate to contact me with any
questions or ideas!

A century of protecting beachgoers
By Sean O'Connell
Australia‘s first surf life saving clubs appeared on Sydney‘s ocean beaches in 1907. By-laws which had banned bathing in daylight hours since the 1830s were repealed between 1902 and 1905, in response to the increasing popularity of surf-bathing, and a growing conviction that bathing in appropriate clothing was not an immoral act. The impact these changes had on local beach culture was swift: beachgoers entered the surf in rapidly escalating numbers. The surf was new to most surf-bathers, and many could not swim, so with its increasing popularity, came more drownings and consequent attempts at rescue.
By the summer of 1906-07, Sydney was obsessed with the question of the safety of the surf. Local councils provided lifelines on most beaches, but these were often in poor condition, or placed inappropriately on the beach. The councils, State Government and media considered a range of suggestions to improve the safety of the beaches, including placing a wire across the beach for bathers to grab if they got into difficulty, or introducing floating buoys.
It was in this environment that surf life saving clubs first emerged, their regular patrols a welcome relief to the concerns of the local authorities and nervous bathers alike. On 18 October, 1907, representatives from these clubs, together with members of other interested groups met to form the Surf Bathing Association of New South Wales (SBANSW), the organisation now known as Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).
One hundred years later, SLSA has grown to become a diverse organisation and Australia‘s largest water safety and rescue authority, with more than 110,000 members and made up of 305 clubs and many other organisational entities such as branches, state centres and support services.
Surf sports, nipper programs and the community education programs which SLSA conducts are all aimed to raise community awareness of surf safety, and to improve the skills and abilities of surf lifesavers, in an attempt to provide a safe beach and aquatic environment throughout Australia.
In recognition of 100 years of service, the Australian Government has declared 2007 to be the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, celebrating the more than 520,000 people who have been rescued, and the countless thousands more lives improved in so many different ways through active involvement in the surf lifesaving movement.
The value of these services to the Australian community has been independently estimated at more than $1.4 billion per year and each year, Surf Life Saving members spend more than 1.4 million hours patrolling Australian beaches. The number of hours spent 'behind the scenes' in training, administration and associated activities is many times that amount.
2007 Year of the Surf Lifesaver recognises this significant contribution and provides an historic opportunity to for everyone who has had a beach experience to commemorate the history, celebrate the centenary and consolidate the future position of Surf Life Saving in Australia and ensure that these unsung heroes can go on saving lives for the next 100 years.

Mission Statement

CADETS/SENIORS NEWS I would like to give a big thankyou to the Cadets, Seniors and Masters for the past season. We again successfully won all of the Branch Carnivals, NQ Branch Championships and the XXXX Cup. Well done everyone and it has been a pleasure to be your Team Manager. Sorry I was unable to attend the Nth Australian Championships this year but I am sure you made us proud. It would be great if we could have a few of the Cadets, Seniors and Masters to attend the QLD State Senior Titles next year on the 25th to 27th March 2011 at Kurrawa SLSC.
I would like to remind all club members of the important work and thank all the Cadets, Seniors, Masters, Officials, Assessors and Trainers do each year for the club by way of giving their time from Patrolling, Water Safety at Carnivals and on Sundays, Officialling, Assessing and Training of Patrolling members. Some of these members have taken on more that one role within the club and are also constantly helping the club with fundraising and working bees. If it was not for those members giving their time towards the club by keeping the beaches safe, fundraising and working bees the club would not be as successful as it is in lifesaving and competing. Thank you to all of those members for giving their precious time towards helping the club in the past season.
Thank you to all the Cadets, Seniors and Masters and their families for their help throughout the last season in my role as Team Manager. This has been my third year as the Senior Team Manager and I have enjoyed my time in that role (even though it can be very stressful at times). In the past 3 years the Cadets and Seniors have won every Branch carnival, NQ Branch Championships, XXXX Cup and they have also won for 2 years the Seniors at Nth Aussies. What a successful 3 years you have all had well done.
It is that sad time of year again when we see Cadets and Seniors moving on towards Uni or other work opportunities. We will miss those members but wish them all the best in their ventures next year and we hope that they keep in contact with the club and come and see us when they are back on holidays. For those members that are staying in Cairns we hope to see you all again next season.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, please drive safely if travelling anywhere over the festive season and take care. See you all in the 2010/2011 season.
