BOARD OFMANAGEMENT

REPORTS

Secretary

Welcome to the 90th Annual Report for Glenelg SLSC. This season will most likely be known as the one that was cut short by a global pandemic. On behalf of the Board of Management we present the Annual Report for the season, together with the financial statements and balance sheet for the 2019/20 financial year of the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club Incorporated. The Annual Report aims to capture and reflect on the many milestones accomplished throughout the year by our members, including patrolling our beaches to ensure no lives are lost, competing in surf sports, developing our future generation of lifesavers, educating our members and the general public, supporting various social engagements and the overall functioning of the Glenelg SLSC. This year’s Board of Management was a fairly experienced one, with all but one position being filled by continuing officers. We welcomed Mark Remeljej to the Treasurer role as our previous Club Treasurer Clayton Hayball stepped back. We thank Waxer for his vast expertise and careful management of the Club’s finances over the past few seasons. We continue to patrol the busiest metropolitan beach in the State and over the course of the season our Lifesavers have volunteered thousands & thousands of hours service to patrols and water safety. We acknowledge our members' service to the community. The diverse mix of local, national and international visitors to the area, who often lack any water knowledge, brings its own challenges. As always there were a number of rescues and many preventions, but thankfully no lives were lost. I commend our members for their high standards and professional, caring and respectful manner when dealing with the public and incidents. On the competition front, whilst the season’s end didn’t quite go to plan, our athletes again performed brilliantly and made GSLSC proud. Many of those efforts have been outlined in our individual section leader’s reports.

To our huge group of volunteers, we appreciate you helping out during the season with BBQ’s, planning and logistics, donating time, skills and services towards fundraising, administration, data entry, patrols, registrations, social events, plant & equipment repairs, fixing, painting, packing,

transporting club gear and equipment, upgrading the Club’s facilities.. and the list goes on! Thank you all for your invaluable commitment. Surf Life Saving’s core function is about training individuals to save lives. Particular mention goes to our very experienced, and super lovely training team of Amanda De Ieso, Suzie Macauley & Lisa Harvey. Their leadership and the countless hours given to training our members during the season were immense. It’s all done with a smile and great humour too, nice work ladies! Ganz & his superb group of AGL’s, helpers and parents volunteered so much time to train and prepare our juniors and youth to become competitors, lifesavers, worthy teammates and future leaders: the same goes for our senior coaching group. Thanks so much for your efforts and the time you give to our members / athletes. This year, our Bar & Bistro team led by Peter Kerak genuinely deserve a special mention. From around February, the constantly evolving Covid-19 situation was like walking on thin ice as new challenges and increasingly strict lockdown procedures were rolled out. And as we go to print it does seem we may still have a little further to go with restrictions. Georgie Cole, Peter, and the kitchen under Chef Sandeep have worked absolutely tirelessly to ensure our club could stay open, even if only in the most limited capacity to begin. A core focus was to ensure as many of our employees as possible still had a job and therefore some income, that the club was able to support them by staying open, and our members could still be engaged in some capacity. The business upstairs saw a complete remodel and moved from the bustling and vibrant bar & bistro we know, to locked down under the most strict of Covid-19 hygiene standards. We were forced to close, still with full fridges and freezers and it became obvious it would be a pretty dire situation. Outgoings were subsequently slashed, power reduced, food & alcohol stock on hand sold to members, menus changed/ reduced/ re-costed, social media ramped up, and staff did letterbox drops advertising our new takeaway service (and the list goes on). Together with our Financial Oversight Committee (FOC), this group carefully manoeuvred the Club to ensure we worked within the extremely strict Covid requirements, the tightest of budgets and could still stay open. They did an absolutely stellar job of it too. Our FOC met regularly during those months to ensure the Club’s security (incl finances) were protected in the background as

well as providing considered guidance and oversight to the Board.

It’s been great to see things very slowly come back to our ‘new normal’ for now - you’ll notice partitions have been erected to create rooms so we’re able to work to required numbers & guidelines. Everyone is doing great and our awesome club vibe has returned. Keep up the support everyone!

To Georgie Cole, our extraordinary President (who quite honestly shoulders a workload of 2-3 full time employees) - words cannot thank you enough for the work you do for our club and members - all as a volunteer and whilst juggling a demanding full time job.

Most would have no real idea at the responsibility of a Club President with over 700 members - governance, finance & budgets, reporting, member services, events, council, logistics, operations, committees, licencing & house related management (etc, etc, etc) to ensuring the club runs as a cohesive unit for its members, remains competitive and is also in a good financial position. On the flip side, she also gets to deal with all the personal things like supporting members in need. Our GSLSC President is ‘the buck stops here’ person.

Well, in signing off as secretary - it’s been a pretty tough last quarter to the season 2020, but hats off to everyone for quickly adapting to the global pandemic and pitching in and working around things, even if it was by ordering takeaway from the club every so often!

We look forward to a much more ‘regular’ and settled 20/21 season ahead. Yeah GSLSC!

Gina BellSecretary

President

Dear Members, Well another crazy insane year not only at Glenelg, but the whole world! The main talking point from March this year has been COVID and the impact this has had on not only our lives but also our community, how we live and of course specifically the Club. I wanted to keep my report brief this year as I have really struggled to put pen to paper and close out my last term of President so please excuse the briefness. In reflection I have been on the Board for 9 years, 4 as secretary and 5 as President and at the end of this stretch I can say that I am mentally and physically exhausted. Its been really tough with a number of huge events and tragedies in each of my terms that has really taken a personal toll. That “easy year” teased but never delivered. Along with a core team we have certainly achieved a great turn around at the Club in so many areas. However, whilst we have thrown a lot of cash at competition this area has remained an issue with a large drop off of members in the teenager years, with a need for trained coaches and a more inclusive environment not just for the handful of top performers but for the middle and “having fun” members being identified as key pillars to rebuilding. This depth and skillset is what brings a championship to any sporting group. In response to that the Board appointed Tash to take on the challenge and provide some support and structure into the group, focus on the transition age groups as they move into seniors, youth development, identify pathways from competition to training in other disciplines relating to patrols – IRB, Advanced Resus and so on. Its safe to say that all the clubs are struggling in this space so this isn’t unique to Glenelg and it’s a really tough one to get right. We are part of the regular forums in Surf working to proactively improve this gap in our sport – retention, teenagers, skills and female participation. One of the hardest tasks to deal with has as the President has been to ensure that all members are cared for. As a parent of a child who just loves the sea, I appreciate that the needs and motivations of families are very broad and sometimes decisions aren’t popular. The balance between a Club which is inclusive, a healthy environment on the beach, training and so on, as well as being a huge commercial enterprise

where we actively work together to implement changes and improvements for a zero fatality at Glenelg and wider beaches, we are now in our fourth year and made some major changes and adoption of the Coroners Findings report from the last drowning at Glenelg. Additionally Rob, Josh, Suzie, Amanda & Cath have introduced information sessions to immigrants, mental health first aid courses, we have run water events teaching water safety from school kids to kids here for World Math & Science Olympics who have never seen the sea! The good will and well being focus that the Club manages and has implemented has affected and supported so many in the community, our current, past and ongoing support to current and past members is something we should all be proud of. Lastly because I love my numbers and finances, its been a group effort to turn the Club financially from a negative position into an extremely strong position with everything shiny and new, no major capital expenses required, and where we are entering Summer with $75k in savings, $130k mid September in the working capital account and $25k loan debt is a great start to the season. Ongoing management of this isn’t easy and I know that Mick as the incoming President is a genius and a good mate who I’m really happy to hand the reigns over. Whilst this has been some of my lowest times particularly with the drownings we have had and Mike, I think the best way to describe these years is probably insane, met some amazing people and kids. Its all about the kids. Thank you to my rocks of support – Baz, the PM, Simon, Gina, Tash and unwavering support from Don Thomas & lifeline team Cath, Tracey & Sharyn for keeping me mildly sane….and my darling Ruby. Seeya GeorgiePresident GSLSC

Deputy President

is a delicate balance which shifts and moves one way and the other, with the endgame being an overall balanced management for our members. I hope that on the whole we have achieved this for you. COVID this year saw an amazing amount of support from the Club Members and our local community. The team was able to quickly adjust, re-adjust and adjust again to the changes that were thrown at us sometimes multiple times in a day. As a result the upstairs area was transformed not just visually but also operationally. Thank you to Peter, Jana, Charlie, Joanne, Eric & Sandjeep as our staff that totally smashed the challenges we threw at them. Welcome to Keri who has joined the team in functions as a rocket of energy and experience. For myself my wings were clipped with no more weekly interstate travel, so the timing in being able to support the team couldn’t have been better. The support from Simon, Darren and Gina, Ulli our builder, Council, the wider Board and Surf really bought everything together to ensure that all the tasks from the business and the engagement of our members, logistics for COVID sport training and communication was spot on. It’s probably a good time to remember that these were imposed rules, not rules from the Board or Surf per se. Membership wise our seniors and masters are growing, a great job by Amanda and Rob, Darren as the Club Captain has really grown and shown his amazing communication skills and leadership, thank you to the Operations Committee where everyone kept all the core areas running. Juniors whilst the overall member numbers are on the decline, the ability to offer sport over COVID saw fantastic numbers at training even in the coldest crappiest days of weather. Thank you to all parents and volunteers across the gamut of roles from Age Group Leaders to Patrol Captains to Coaches to Patrol Members to Water Cover and so on, the list is astronomical. The background logistics for maintaining and purchasing of equipment – from bandaids to 4wds, corralling people onto and off the beach, supporting visitors to our beach with a safe area and upskilling and training our members is to say the least a huge task. Outside of these core services, there many other services that the Club provides under the well being and protection umbrella that extends not just to our current members but also maintaining this care to those members, past members and our community. I am proud to have pulled together SAPOL, Surf, Council and DPTI to run a quarterly Drowning Prevention Working group

Junior Chairman

The 2019/20 Season turned out to be a short one and this is also going to be reflected in the length of the Junior Chairman's report.

The season started in typical fashion. A beautiful sunny 25 degree Saturday followed by 5 successive weekends of cold weather and howling south westerly’s. It was a credit to the fortitude of our kids who kept on turning up in droves. A strong social media recruiting drive saw our junior numbers up around 200. We will look to expand on this solid platform in coming seasons, particularly in the younger age groups.

We now have a very settled and experienced team of AGMs who all do a brilliant job. Special thanks to Anna ‘Action’ Jackson who is taking a well-earned career break after 5 years at the helm of the tiny tots. She has done a stunning job looking after the little tackers and has shown the patience of a Richmond Supporter to last as long as she did!

Juniors also say farewell to Team Larven who migrated down from the wilds of Semaphore 3 years ago and have since woven themselves into every facet of the DNA of the club. I’m not sure how we will replace them.

Thanks to all of our coaches in Baker, Leigh, Hutchy and ‘meet’ Joe Black. We have strong direction and leadership on Sand, Water and on Boards. Alas we said goodbye to Pete Peppin who clearly missed the miserable weather and contagious germs and headed back to Victoria after many years meritorious service to the club.

We were able to squeeze in a pre Xmas home carnival at Glenelg and as usual it was a roaring success both competitively and financially. Thanks to our fabulous volunteer mentality we demonstrated clearly to our ‘southern cousins’ how a carnival should be hosted. After the big event the post carnival magical healing powers of the Margot and Ian in the Boatshed Bar managed to soothe any lingering carnival soreness.

We did have a couple of feel good moments this season. In January, six of our intrepid juniors rescued a couple of Korean students who waddled off the sandbar and straight into mischief. No-one was prepared for the media frenzy that followed and our ‘little heroes’ even got a mention in Federal Parliament!

In December a visiting American tourist dropped his brand new IPhone off the jetty while jogging. He asked for some goggles to search for it but we gave him the gift of the Junior Board Squad underwater recovery team. It's still a mystery how they stumbled across it, but sure enough the phone was located in 2 metres of water and incredibly still in working condition. The eagle eye of Karlia Kerak earned her a handy little reward from the grateful Arkansas Farmboy.

Competitively, there was a genuine sense that the sleeping giant had awoken and we were poised to be a powerful force this year going into state titles. A Kirstin Tocker motivational masterpiece video whipped the Green and Gold Horde into a frenzy at Pasta Night. The sight of 100 banshees bellowing out a club song resplendent in freshly minted emerald green and glistening gold of Glenelg SLSC lifted the ceiling of the grand dining hall and inspired everyone in the room. (except for a few locals trying to order a schnitzel) The challenge had been eagerly embraced and success was inevitable. So it was a shattering let down when the ‘The Great Plague’ shut it all down the next day. Nevertheless, hard work and preparation has Season 2020/21 poised for greatness.

So in summary, it was a season that promised greatness but was cruelly cut down by a pandemic. Thanks to some of our generous sponsors we now have brand new tents, a junior trailer and even a brand new Hilux Ute. If nothing else we are going to hit next season as the smoothest looking club on the beach.

Despite some of the Junior Committee meetings resembling the Korean Parliament I really want to thank my Committee for the hundreds of hours of hard work they put in. Without them we wouldn’t have such a well-run and successful club. From Chesty Daltons new equipment, to Dinah’s gourmet sausage factory. From Stu’s Sentinels (the water cover) to Doomsday Dan DeMaria’s requests of the sponsors they all pull their weight. Thanks to these people we are and will continue to be The Destination Club

The 2019/2020 year for Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. has been challenging as we worked through the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on club activities and trading in the last two months of the financial year.

At year end a combined profit of $47K (after depreciation) was made, however this was down on the previous year by $31K (40%). Despite the difficulties faced, the Club ended the year in a strong financial position, with the reduction in revenue from the Bar and Bistro during the restricted trading period offset in part by the COVID-19 financial assistance received from the Federal Government in the form of Cash Flow Boost and Job Keeper payments.

The Bar and Bistro saw a reduction in overall profit (after depreciation) of $90K compared to the prior year. The reduction in profit was due in majority to a reduction in revenue from bar sales of 12% ($118K) relating to several factors being: COVID-19 trading restrictions in March and April 2020; bar renovations in August/September 2019 requiring the Bar to close for a month; and of course the 2018/2019 figures included increased bar sales during the World Titles. Bistro revenue remained steady with a small increase of 2.5% ($25K) in part due to moving to takeaway and deliveries during the time the Club wasn’t able to open. Venue hire revenue reduced by 13% ($6K) with some COVID-19 related cancellations. Employment expenses increased by 12% ($96K) due, in most part to redundancy payments made. Operating and Premises expenses for the Bar and Bistro reduced by $51K compared to the prior year with reductions in related expenses due to reduced trading hours and re-negotiation of some costs with providers.

General Club revenue increased over the prior year with an extra $17K in merchandise sales together with increases in revenue from fundraising/BBQ events held, up by $20K, and an additional $26K in donations, grants and sponsorship received. Reductions in club expenses included costs associated with competitions, with State and Australian Titles cancelled due to COVID-19, which offset reductions in membership fee plus water cover/surf safety revenue received. The Club continued to support members through swimming subsidies, member development and equipment.

Additions to Property, Plant and Equipment held included the Bar/Bistro renovation ($112K), purchases of new surf

craft and other club equipment including 2 new IRB’s, junior trailer, competition tent other general surf equipment at a cost of $72K. Reduction in cash flow from operating expenses and spend on new capital acquisitions reduced the cash held at year end.

The Club’s Board of Management remained busy during the year with regular meetings with the Upstairs Management Team and Financial Oversight Committee to ensure careful monitoring of accounts and the Club’s cash flow during the year. As the incoming Treasurer, it has been amazing to see the commitment of all the members and staff who give their time to the Club..

We started the season with a bang with the new look club after the renovations. There was a great response from our loyal members and the general public with bumper months and revenue up year on year.

- Josh Warne won the “Junior Employee of the Year” at the Club SA Awards night.- Functions continued to grow as our status as a great function revenue grew.- The Beach Concert Series of Ice House, Jimmy Barnes and Fat Boy Slim and the changing of the stage location created a memorable moment for everyone lucky enough to book a balcony table at GSLSC. We’ll look at what we do with these prize viewing seats next year. - NYE, attended by me and family. Great night

Late March saw our attempt as a revenue breaking year, shattered with Covid-19 heavily impacting all Food and Beverage outlets, and also our way of life as we know it. Our first priority was how to save the jobs of our fantastic employees. Peter and Sanjeeb, lead magnificently by Georgie made the swift change of our entire business model to bring about the Takeaway.

Thankfully in early April the Federal Government brought in the Job Keeper. This allowed us to expand our Takeaway model and retain all our Team. The Patrol ute may still smell of the Club Burger!

The support from our members and locals for our takeaway has been amazing. Part way through we added the popular ordering platforms Uber Eats and MenuLog, and the uptake exceeded all expectations.

As restrictions were slowly lifted, the club has been in the best position to rebound strongly and has performed either inline with last year or better than last year which is a great result.

Some other initiatives the Club has set up:Now Book It - restaurant reservation system with online presence (streamlined our booking system)Function Tracker - implementation of function system (MYOB integrated, cloud based)EatClub - Online booking system helping to fill empty spotsStaff Training - Monjava Barista Coffee Studio, The Drink Cabinet - Event Management Company NSW

Simon de Jong

House Manager

Well it’s been an interesting season, from our Nippers becoming local heroes saving tourists, to the season ending abruptly due to a pandemic, the season has certainly had its highs and lows.

It’s amazing how people band together to support each other and there is no better community than a surf life saving club who shows this spirit. I am very proud to call Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club my second home and I cannot fault the enthusiastic attitudes, positivity and comradery we all experience every time we come down to the Club.

There are always a few who stand out, and Georgina Cole, Robert Warne and Simon de Jong and Peter Kerak have really shone. They diligently and capably steered us through a very successful summer and also some of the Club’s (and World's) toughest times to date. The whole Club thanks you!

From an asset, member volume and competitor quality, I believe the Club is the best it’s been since I’ve been at the Club. With new equipment for patrol (including two brand new IRBs), new craft for those putting in the hours of training, a new trailer for our nippers, boards & tents and the renovations to the bar & bistro, we are looking great for years to come.

To my fellow competitors who have undertaken hours of training doing something they love, remember that even though that final satisfaction of competing at both State and Australian level was taken away, the work you put in to get to that point was just a stepping stone for things to come. Let’s come back next season faster, stronger and more committed than ever before!

If we only take one thing away from this season, it must be that we are some of the luckiest people in the world. Knowing we are a part of a community where through any kind of celebration or adversity we have the support and backing from any Clubbie that has ever been privileged enough to don the green and gold colours of the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club.

SAPOL to monitor beach numbers due to Covid 19 and actively remind beach goers to observe ‘Social Distancing’.

We had an early start to activities when the Club was asked to assist Surf Life Saving SA and our major Sponsor Westpac, with a display on Colley Reserve in conjunction with the City – Bay Fun Run. The morning ended with us assisting SA Ambulance Service deal with minor First Aid cases and exhaustion along Jetty Road and in the race Finish area.

At a Media Conference to launch the start of the Patrol Season in October, members gave an impromptu demonstration to the assembled media, politicians and SLSSA officials when called upon by a local family with a suspected allergic reaction.

The number of Patrolling Members averaged out at 160, spread over our eleven patrol teams. Our thanks go out to this dedicated group who turned out almost fortnightly during the busy December & January holiday period. Most requests for subs were managed well, but we do encourage members to look at the carnival schedule and plan-ahead where possible moving forward.

Senior members were involved in an unusual Mass Rescue after training one evening when an inflatable raft loaded with people broke away from Glenelg Jetty and drifted towards the rock groyne at Glenelg North. The whole Club was immensely proud of our Junior Clubbies, who showed great initiative to go to the aid of two International visitors who got into trouble in the water.

Thanks to the great efforts of our Trainers, we increased our pool of IRB Drivers available for patrols. We encourage more members to sign-up for future IRB Crew and Driver courses.

Special thanks also to our Trainers/Assessors who managed Proficiencies and Patrol Audits.

Once again, Glenelg Beach became a major entertainment venue with several concerts held on the sand. We continue to work with the City of Holdfast Bay Council to ensure our beach access and visibility of the danger areas is considered in the planning of future events.

The Club’s new Hilux Ute was a welcome addition to our vehicle fleet, and we thank the CMV Foundation for their support with the purchase of this vehicle.

As in previous years, along with many other behind the scenes tasks Dee Armstrong managed the weekly entry of the Patrol, Incident and IRB Logs and we thank Dee for her continued support. All SA Surf Life Saving clubs have now been allocated an electronicTablet for use on the beach, and logs and other routine patrol tasks will be managed electronically in the future. As we progress towards next season, we will provide training for Patrol Captains on the use of the new technology and processes.

Special thanks to Chris Haines, our Honourary Medical Officer who kept the First Aid Room tidy and checked bum bags, first aid and oxygen kits weekly. Matt Maylin once again ensured we had adequate First Aid supplies.

Going forward, we would like to increase our patrolling member numbers and upskill more of our younger members to be able to take on roles such as Patrol Captains and Vice Captains. In conjunction with our Chief Instructor and trainers, we will continue to provide opportunities to undertake further training.

Thank you to all patrolling members. Enjoy your winter break and we’ll see you back on the beach in October.

First Aid

Once again the 2019/20 season turned out to be both busy and challenging for our club, especially towards the end of the season with the current global pandemic. GSLSC once again provided a high level first aid capacity to carnivals and our yearly external beach events, outside of our usual patrolling commitments.

Our members were kept busy over the patrolling season performing an abundance of preventative actions, first aid cases and rescues.

I would like to thank everyone who put their hand up and volunteered to help with first aid coverage over the season, and to everyone who assisted me in maintaining the first aid room and kits, thank you too.

I wish everyone a safe and healthy off season as we work through the current COVID-19 pandemic and look forward to seeing each and every one of you back on the beach next season!

Radio Room

The SurfCom team completed over 1500 hours, including 139 hours of hot weather coverage in season 2019/20.

Here are some highlights from the season.

There has been a key focus on training this season with the SurfCom team being involved in more training opportunities and exercises to help with the development of the team. The SurfCom team’s resources were also improved this year, with the development of the new SurfCom Operations Procedures that were introduced early in the season, which later became the template for improving procedures across EOG.

The group has introduced a range of new web-based systems to support the work of the group. The team has also helped to improve the Operations App by supplying feedback and issues as the SurfCom team moved to become paperless and use the App. solely. This feedback and suggestions were passed on to SLSA and helped shape the Operations App. to what it is in its current form.

There is one highlight of particular achievement this season with long term SurfCom Supervisor, Brian Burrowes (West Beach) was awarded the Emergency Services Medal at a ceremony in November. This is a huge achievement and shows the dedicated service that Brian has shown to SurfCom and across Surf Life Saving.

Our biggest challenge came late in the season. Coronavirus impacted Surf Life Saving across the country, including the SurfCom team. As the season began winding down early due to the restrictions, the EOG teams including SurfCom continued to provide coverage. The changes to the way SurfCom operated were changed frequently and were handled well by the team.

I would encourage anyone who is interested to get in touch with me about being part of and helping to grow the Surfcom EOG service. You will be well supported and the work the group does is valued and is rewarding. We look forward to another great season on 2020/21.

Cheers

Glenelg Competition Officer The 2019/20 Surf Sports year will be known as the season that didn't happen, or the unprecedented season.

Covid-19 or CoronaVirus prematurely ended the season heading into Senior States and Aussies. Athletes had done all the hard work leading up to this point and the sudden end to the season had a hollow feeling.

Our athlete numbers dropped off this year, due to a number of athletes transferring to other clubs for various reasons, an issue we should try to arrest in the coming seasons.

Ski Captain

Well what a season this has been!

The highlights may be limited this year but when we are able to return, I know we will come back bigger (hopefully not fatter) and better than ever before. A great group of youth have taken a liking to the ski leg and will only continue to build through this long winter.

A huge offseason had the Glenelg ski squad kicking goals early in the season in both short and long racing. A few members including Cat and some from the Silver fox ski group (Steve, Craig, Tim and Dobie) continue to participate in The Doctor, a 27km paddle and love the early morning grinds required.

The introduction of the Surf Team League provided an opportunity for Cat and Lachie to go interstate and race at a couple of the biggest carnivals of the year. These two were also selected onto the state team and joined by Jed, Airlie and Nate. Just missing out on the team was also Gabe, Eloise and Will.

While we didn’t race states or Aussies, the above selections prove how strong our youth are on the skis and another winter on the water will provide for a huge 20/21 season. A special mention to Baker, Craig and Steve for coaching our legendary ski squads that has other clubs’ members coming to train with us as we are the destination club.

Cheers team and see you on the water / around the club.

Gear Stewards Report

This being my first season, or 3/4 of a season as gear steward the year was made easy by the 100s of helpers that chipped in over throughout the season.

The year began with the annual gear inspection, which once again was handled by Rob Warne and helpers in my absence.

This season also saw the arrival of our new patrol ute, a big thankyou to the team at CMI Toyota. Another thankyou has to be given to the members treating all our assets with so much care, from IRB to board, ski and gym gear. Repairs were very minimal this year.

Even though the season was cut short, hopefully we will be back to normal surf life soon. And as always small repairs are continued to be completed where we can in the down time.

Constitution Committee Report

Well, fellow members, it has been a long haul, but I’m very pleased to be able to report that the revision of the Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club Constitution and By-Laws is now complete.

As I reported last year, since the Constitution Committee began work on this challenging and time consuming project in late December 2015, a number of unavoidable impediments combined to delay its completion, but these have now been overcome and the job is done. Your Constitution Committee is quietly confident that, with necessary limited revisions from time to time, these documents will now effectively serve the Club for some years to come.

I have previously explained in various forums that the importance of the Constitution and its supporting By-Laws should not be underestimated.

I am well aware that, to many, these can be documents which are dry and sometimes difficult to read and understand. They are, however, critical in that they provide the lawful basis on which our Club is managed and operated.

But the question remains, “why was all this work to rewrite the Constitution and By-Laws necessary?” Because it is a formally registered ‘Incorporated Association’, the management of the Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club is subject to State Government rules and regulations. Whilst some of these can appear complex, when it is all broken down, these laws are designed with one broad purpose in mind…….the protection of the interests of the members.

Our necessary affiliations with SLSA and SLSSA mean that the lifesaving and competition operations of the Club are always subject to conditions imposed by both these bodies. And then there is the Club itself which, like most others, has over the many years of its existence, developed systems and structures which are unique to Glenelg and demand formal preservation. But none of these factors remain constant. Both the Club Constitution and its By-Laws are ‘living documents’ which should always incorporate and reflect the mandatory legal and operational demands of these external bodies and, wherever practicable, the historical and emerging wishes of the Club membership.

Over the past decade or so the Constitution and By-Laws of our Club have not kept pace with, nor appropriately

documented, a raft of the legal, operation and business changes which have evolved at all levels. A comprehensive revision was necessary. And therein lies the answer to the question I posed earlier. Some of the more significant and demanding By-Law revisions completed by the Constitution Committee over the past year have included:

•Newwideranginglegalandoperational requirements for working with children•TouringTeammanagement•Trophyselection•Themanagementofpatrolsandcompetition.

In preparing the final document considerable work has been undertaken to develop a consistency of presentation of By-Laws of a like nature, e.g. Sub-Committees, and to include in each By-Law a series of logical sub-headings designed to make navigation of them, and the associated index of contents, much more ‘user friendly’ than has been the case in the past.

Frustratingly, much of this need arose from the fact that this latest revision included the discovery that, because By-Laws are in the gift of the Board, a considerable number of additions and alterations had been included over a number of past years, on a piecemeal basis and without any reference to the Constitution Committee. I should add that this is not a criticism directed at current or recent members. For both legal and practical reasons, this a most undesirable practice which could leave the Club dangerously exposed. It should not be repeated in the future.

Although this rewrite is now completed, I should note that because our governing Constitution and By-Laws are living documents, the need to keep pace with changing future demands will, from time to time, involve on-going ‘tinkering around the edges’ of some and the need to completely rewrite others. This leads me to comment that it is a sad but inevitable fact of life that the current members of your Constitution Committee are not getting any younger.

The need for a generational change is looming large, and it is therefore appropriate to conclude this report by posing another question…..“Who is up for the challenge?”

Beach Captain

Unfortunately, apart from the Masters State Titles which was held prior to the Covid 19 isolation causing the cancelling of our State Titles for (Juniors & Senior) and the Australian Titles

The number of competitors in the beach area for the Senior carnivals this year was very small. We are in desperate need of more competitors so we can contribute more strongly to the points score of the Club for State Titles and perform at Australian Titles.

We have some very good competitors in Matt Cammancho, Airlie Rouvray and Nate Kingsley and can see improvement in others. We had enough competitors for an U15 male and female relay this year with Pia Marshal, Violet Pattison, Fryer Prinse and Airlie Rouvray (for the female) and Nate Kingsley, Aiden Dejong, Bailey Gaug and Sam Sander, (for the male). We also had a newly qualified member Verity Angus and Liam O’Shaunnesy who were entered for the State Titles.

The Masters were also well represented at the State Titles coming away with a number of medals in the beach area. The male beach area results were David Hutchison 1st in the sprint and relay, Leigh Bowbridge was 1st in the sprint, flags, 1k run and relay, Malcolm Stevens came 1st in the 2k run and relay, Sam Tucker came 1st in the beach relay, Anthony Merchant was 3rd in 2k run and 2nd in the beach relay, Craig Burton 2nd 2k run and 2nd in the beach relay, Daryl Burrows was 2nd in the beach relay and Damien Fox 2nd in the beach relay, for their age groups. In the female beach area Leanne Rouvray came 1st in the flags and 2k run, 2nd in the sprint and 3rd in the relay, Serena Murphy was 2nd in the 2k run and 3rd in the relay, Susie McCauley and Sue McCarthy were 3rd in the relay. Thank you to all those who competed, let's see if we can increase the numbers next season.

Thank You to Peter Peppin, David Hutchison, Peter Sage & Malcolm Stevens for forming a coaching panel so that it was possible to provide coaching to the Juniors Seniors and Masters on Weekends and during the week. Unfortunately we will be without Peps (Douglas) next season as he has moved to Victoria to live, but I have no doubt he will be watching the results of the people he has helped coach in recent seasons.

We will have a Professional running team next year for those who would like to do pro running with others from the club as well as beach running. I am a Professional coach registered

with the SAAL. The club has indicated that they will pay the registration fees for those who wish to do pro running with the club team as well as lifesaving competitions. This should enable anyone who wants to run professionally as well as on the beach to do so with a minimum of fuss & I will integrate relay baton training, flags and running (including professional running) training in one program. As the main part of the professional running program is before Xmas and lifesaving is more serious after Xmas they can both meld in quite well.

The beach area requires more competitors for beach events. Any new members who are interested in competing in the beach area just rock up at the training times which will be on facebook when pre season starts.

As there were no State Titles the March Past Team remains the current State March Past champions.

It would be good if we could get an Under 23 March Past Team to compete as those who are not competing could get a result with less time required than iron man and other water competitions.

Board Captain & Coach

Despite the premature ending of the 19/20 season the board squad in particular was destined for great things in the final competitions of the year. This season's squad was definitely one of the biggest board groups in the state. Part of this was the delightful company of the new board paddles who came up from juniors as well as some of the current juniors who started stepping up to have a go.

As per usual our squad had a very small group of girl competitors this year. However, this group of girls were nothing but a standout all throughout the season, as they all had consistently high results at every carnival. At training these girls also stepped it up a lot and showed everyone that even with little numbers they are still a huge part of the Glenelg board squad!

The senior men's age group this season was easily the most constant and highly skilled group of board paddlers in the state. They were able to demonstrate this perfectly at every carnival with consistently having close to 6 paddlers finishing in the top 8 in every race! Relays is where the squad really shined; it was amazing to watch the Glenelg teams dominate in such high contested racing, with the addition of having 3 teams in the races because our large numbers made it even better. A lot of our board competitors this year were under 17 and 19’s, for them to be achieving such high results in the open age group is also sensational.

This year we had 2 of our board paddlers selected into the SA state team, Jed Ffrench, and Lachie Merchant. Both competitors had amazing results in the state competition as well as the following Murphy builders carnival too. This was a great achievement not just by the athletes, but by the club as well as it demonstrated our skill against the rest of the country.

In this year's Coolangatta Gold we also had some great results from the club. Just like every year Michael Dobie placed very high in his age group as well as having a very solid result overall. Also, Lachie Merchant placed 3rd in the under 19 age group, a fantastic result from the young competitor!

Finally, a huge thank you to the whole crew who helped to make this season great. Also a huge thank you to the coaches Ethan Rump and Micheal Baker, without them none of this would've been possible!

Chief Instructor This year was a busy year with new systems being trialled at club and state level for training, assessment and proficiency.

At a club level we implemented a booking system for proficiency which seemed to work well. All feedback we received was positive around the system and how it worked. So we will continue to use a booking system next season.

At a state level a new assessment process is being used. As an assessors myself and Iain Mitchell have been to a few of the bulk assessments. I personally feel it works well. It is much more streamlined and a fairer process. A new Assessment app was introduced this season as well. It’s being used for assessments and proficiency and once all the bugs are ironed out it will make life much easier for our trainers and assessors.

I would like to acknowledge all the hard work and hours our trainers and assessors put in each season. Without your hard work we wouldn’t be able to patrol or continue to be the fantastic club we are. The trainers give up a large amount of their own time to make sure proficiencies are completed each year. It is a big job. I’d like to thank the members who complete their proficiencies in the allotted time slots. It makes our jobs easier not to have to chase people up. There are some improvements that need to be made to make sure our trainers are not continuously giving up extra time to those who leave it until the last minute. As members can you please check your email and mobile numbers are correct so we can send out details of dates and times at the beginning of the season. We will continue to use facebook and the website as well.

Due to disruptions this year we were unable to offer an Advanced Resuscitation course this season. Hopefully we will be able to do one next season.

Congratulations to Dave Candy for completing his trainers for IRB crew and drivers. Thanks to our IRB trainers Jared Schenscher and David O’shaughnessy they were able to put through 13 new crew and 4 new drivers. Thank you to Angus Stevens and Thomas Drew for coming out to help throughout the training.

Congratulations to Kirstin Tocker for completing her bronze trainers. Thank you to Rob Warne who with my help trained 11 new SRC and 13 new SRC to bronze members. Thank you

to Sarah Schenscher, Jared Schenscher for putting a bronze squad of 5 through.

Thank you to Iain Mitchell and Suzie Macaulay for doing our club assessments.

A massive thank you to all of our trainers and assessors with your work getting proficiencies done. David Candy, Iain Mitchell, Suzie Macauley, Lisa Harvey, Sarah Scenscher, Jared Schenscher, Dave O’Shaughnessy, Rob Warne and Brenton Quimby. THANK YOU

IRB Captain

No one could have predicted the chaos that was the end of the season and this off-season. I must start by commending our Club, from Management through to Nippers, on how well they have responded to the changing expectations and uncertainties that we have been presented with. This, too, shall pass.

Despite the challenges, IRB section managed to have a busy and successful season! During the previous off-season and into the first few weeks of the season, we saw 13 crew and 4 drivers obtain their qualification. Well done to all of these clubbies, who saw an extended training schedule due to many complicated factors. A huge thank you to Dave O’Shaughnessy and Dave Candy for sharing the load with me this year. Dave Candy trained the squad in an effort to achieve his official IRB trainer’s qualification, passing with flying (soaring?) colours. Gus Stevens is also working towards his trainer’s ticket, which has brought added support to the team. As you will probably have guessed, we are not able to utilise the Winter this year for training, so please be sure to keep next Winter in mind if you are looking to expand your horizons in surf and get an IRB qualification.

Our season was shaping up to be a tremendous load on our IRB qualified members – having been signed up for six big events requiring water cover. Not to mention the innumerable hours of water cover for nippers and patrol hours. Many of these, sadly, did not come to fruition, but thank you to those who had put up their hands. A shout out to the nipper parents, several more of whom are now IRB qualified, allowing us to reduce the pressure on each individual member in relation to water cover. Having had a year’s trial of a water cover roster for Nippers, I look forward to being able to work more closely with the Junior committee to promote an equitable and sustainable model.

With much anticipation, we also saw the arrival of two new hulls, as well as two new motors. We have been able to retire one hull and two motors as a result, which is a much needed rejuvenation of our fleet. The new boats will slowly be introduced into the fold, in an effort to maximise our function. The old motors (and most of the hulls) still work beautifully, as long as you adhere to the set-up, pack-up and running requirements – just like a body, to keep it running smoothly, you have to give it a good warm up each morning, move it frequently through the day and make sure you clean it out!

This season has been more complicated and challenging than most and it has been difficult at times. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to build a team around me, to help support the activities of the IRB section – notably Josh Warne, who is gearing up for big things! We may get our competitive team up and running yet!

Thank you for another season, I value the opportunity to work alongside you, and I am grateful that I keep getting the chance to run the IRB section. All the best

The 2020 season was a unique one at best for the boaties!! It was a tight group with not as many crews as previous years, but what the section lacked in size it certainly didn’t lack in performance. Plus as always, the boaties had plenty of fun while doing it.

Under 19 girls : Furettes Lucy Johnson, Holly Tidswell, Madi Glemow, Gabriella Carr, Peter Tidswell (sweep).

This cheerful and fun bunch of girls improved immensely this season as it was the second season rowing together. A bit more of a focus on training and technique saw this crew excel to one of the top 3 under 19’s crew in SA! They travelled to the ASRL Open at Mollymook and made it to the Quarterfinals. Just shows with a bit of hard work what these girls are capable of! I know there is plenty more to come in later seasons from this crew for sure!

Reserve Men: South Packers David Guest, Ben Marjerkic, Lincoln Jeffery, Gary Erivne, Chris Bullen, Geoff Norris (sweep)

These are men I could describe in one world... Bigfoot... rarely seen and hairy!! In the few times you saw them out in action they sure did put on a show!! A few crew changes and young children for all the members meant the balance between training and family was quite hard. In saying that they still were able to score a bronze medal in the 160’s for Masters States! Special shout out to Lincoln Jeffery who took a step back this season from his 27 seasons rowing in the Open Division! The ex QLD Open Gold medalist definitely had an impact in the boat from the first time he stepped in with the boys.

Open Men - Fury Nathan Gillard, Andrew White, Darren Clunes, Peter Clunes, Peter Tidswell (sweep)

The big boys of Glenelg, they had one big change at the start of the year! Getting the golden boy Nathan Gillard back in his most favourite stroke position had an impact on boat speed straight away. The boys did a lot of work and were able to be the most competitive OPEN SA men’s crew claiming the state team honours, and winning every SA carnival they entered. Got through the heats at the ASRL Open with a couple of wins against some top notch crews, but sadly they drew a tough heat in the quarter finals and missed out by a whisker from making the Semi. It may not

Boat Captain

be the end of this crew quite yet, hoping they can come back and really build what that started and have a solid State titles and Aussies campaign next year.

Masters states: Masters states was an awesome day and a competitive one for Glenelg. The 160 men were able to get Gold, Gary wasn’t happy with the bronze... it’s gold or nothing for the ex AFL superstar. The women’s 200 and the COOBS rowed well In there divisions and throughout the year we’re consistently on the water at least once a week, showing us you're never too old (or young) to keep fit and have a row, well done guys!

Final words It’s been a pleasure this year being my first year being Boat Captain. Sadly, due to circumstances, some crews couldn’t get the rewards they deserved at states and aussies due to them being cancelled. With so much work put in, yet disappointment with no end to the season, I think this will only build the fire even more for some crews.

Big shout to Geoff Norris for towing the boat to Mollymook, Without people like Geoff, the boat section couldn’t be competitive interstate. Special mention to Andrew White for being the boat section's first ever Gear Stewart.

Masters State Titles – Christies Beach

Craig Burton Well...weren't the Masters fortunate to have their State Titles completed prior to the restrictions of COVID-19 being enforced which meant all other State Titles events were cancelled.

As per previous years a small team of Masters hit the beach, however the results were very strong with medals and top 6 finishes coming from the many events contested. Once again the program was jam packed with a mixture of individual and team events with many contested on the Saturday with a small number of events completed the following day under tough conditions with strong northerly winds. As in past years this presents a few challenges for some competitors who like to have a go at all events. It certainly made for some interesting races with some tired bodies towards the end of the day, with Leigh Bowbridge continuing to defy the odds and going in all his age group events with a clean sweep of the beach events. Leigh also managed to finish 7th overall for Masters Points gained by an individual so well done to Leigh. As usual there were casualties with Foxy pulling a hamstring in the beach relay but managing to get to the line. Thanks to our officials Jodie Ffrench, Natasha Tunney, Marie Merchant and Brenton Quimby, Gordon Clifford, Nickole Armstrong, Brenton Quimby, Pat and Lea Larven officiating.

Our resident surfer, Tony Dalton, excelled at the Long Board State Titles with gold in the open and masters category.

Great to see a dedicated, albeit small, team of female competitors in the water and on the beach with Kate Dobie back into it after injury plus Kirsten Tocker, Tina Renfrey and Serena Murphy for their first Masters with Glenelg. These days don't just happen, thanks to team manager Anthony Merchant who made sure we were marshalled and ready to go.

The male team was strong in the water and especially in craft events, where there were many top 6 finishes.

Special thanks to all of the officials Helen Bowbridge, Marie Merchant, Jodie Ffrench, Brenton Quimby and Nickole Armstrong plus the IRB team who generously provided water cover.

Overall a solid effort finishing 6th with 228 points.

Cheers

Craig

Throughout the season 2019-20, the Club has received the generous support and valued assistance from a number of organisations, companies and individuals. The Board of Management and all members of the Club are acutely aware that without their support and encouragement, we could not sustain the current level of community service to the beachgoing public at Glenelg. To those kind supporters of our volunteer efforts, we thank you most sincerely
