Rabbi’s Message 2
Giving From the Heart
God spoke to our ancestors in the wilderness of Sinai and asked them to create a
space for God to dwell within our midst. God asked them to give of their hearts, and
they responded with love. In fact, their hearts overflowed with such love and they gave
with such eagerness that Moshe needed to tell them they had given over and above
what was needed to complete the task.
At the end of this month, several incredible individuals are shifting their roles at Adath
Israel. Each of them has given deeply from their hearts and has worked tirelessly to uplift
Adath Israel and to care for our congregation.
First, I want to highlight and celebrate Dara Wood’s incredible tenure as Adath Israel’s
Director of Education and Ritual. She has given her heart to our community.
Dara emanates loving care for all our students and has helped fill the Jarson Education
Center with a love of Jewish learning. You can see her light up when she engages with
our students, and our students feel her constant care and encouragement.
In addition to a decade’s worth of tremendous service to our religious school, Dara has
guided our services with diligence and grace. Dara is not only immensely talented as a service leader, but she loves
what she does.
I hope even as her tenure as an employee concludes, Dara will continue her great service to our congregation as an
active congregant. I hope she will continue joyously leading parts of our service, co-leading our inspiring Neshama
minyan alongside Mitch Cohen, and giving her heart to foster our students’ learning.
Dara Wood has contributed in countless ways to our congregation, often giving her time and energy behind the
scenes to enhance our community. May she truly feel the immense gratitude that we feel for her, and may she take
pride in her extraordinary service to our congregation.
In addition to celebrating Dara’s service, I want to express my immense gratitude to John Stillpass for his wholehearted
and caring leadership as our president. John has a huge
heart and goes above and beyond for our congregation.
He cares tremendously for Adath Israel and its members,
and is constantly reaching out to assist congregants in
any way he can.
May John celebrate his accomplishments and leadership
as president as he turns toward his next role as past
president. As Debbie Lempert knows, the role of past
president can be a very active role, giving to and serving
our congregation. Thank you, John, for all your
tremendous service.
Finally, I want to highlight and celebrate Debbie
Lempert’s invaluable service, as she concludes her tenure
on the board. Debbie is always ready to lend a hand,
whether caring for our students or helping to make sure
Adath Israel is on track and is preparing for its bright future
ahead.
I am personally incredibly grateful to Debbie for
contacting me a year and a half ago to let me know
about this wonderful and warm congregation and its
inspiring vision for the future. I was so excited by what she
shared and by the Imagine Adath initiative, that I applied
for the position, and it is my great honor and joy to now
serve as your rabbi. Thank you, Debbie, for reaching out
to me!
I am immensely grateful for all these amazing individuals,
Dara, John, and Debbie. As our ancestors gave deeply
from their hearts, so too these individuals have given
deeply from their hearts to help make Adath Israel a
Kehilah Kedosha, a holy community where God’s
presence and God’s children are warmly welcomed in.

Purim, Pesach, and Soon My Term is Over!
This was the headline that ran on my page in the March Kol Kehilah. It’s been so long,
that maybe you don’t remember it.
As you probably noticed, there was no April edition this year, as the content submitted
in early March, quickly became irrelevant. Or did it?
The headline that would have run in the April edition was:
WE WILL BE BREAKING THE BREAD OF AFFLICTION HERE AT ADATH ISRAEL!
Let’s just say that this prediction didn’t become entirely irrelevant. (and I wanted to
recycle the promotional photo…) As I write this June column at the end of April, the
memories of a most unusual Pesach are still fresh in my mind. Recall that, Pesach is
traditionally a family holiday which many Jewish families celebrate on the same, or
even higher level than the High Holy Days. This year, we had great plans to take this to
a new level by including the entire Adath Israel Congregational Family in a Community
Seder. Through the inspiration of the Paul family and Rabbi Smolkin and through some
quick, but intensive planning by Rabbi Smolkin, our COO Chris Hannon, our Assistant
Administrator Kathy Haas, and the rest of our staff, we had planned to hold the first Max
Paul Community Seder at Adath Israel. The intent was to connect our Adath Israel family with the local Jewish
community to share the Seder experience.
What actually happened and hopefully will happen: The ugly COVID-19 situation forced us to cancel this event this
year. G-D willing, we will hold the inaugural event next year – declaring as we do at the end of the Seder (sort of),
“Next Year at Adath Israel!”
However, the circumstances also forced us to rapidly re-group and with the continued quick action and flexibility of
Rabbi Smolkin and both our facilities and administrative teams, we repurposed the Koshering of the Kitchen and
arrangements with caterer, CrEATions by Melody to prepare our “Passover to Go” program, to supply Kosher meals
and Seder Plate kits, for our Congregants and for the Jewish community. Through this program, our volunteers
distributed over 300 meals! The Seder experience was then shared via Virtual Seders both nights.
Since then, with our physical facilities closed, our Rabbinic team, Senior Rabbi Moshe Smolkin, Assistant Rabbi Ben
Chaidell, and Rabbinic Intern Shmuel Polin, together with the immeasurable assistance and participation of Director of
Ritual Dara Wood and Music Director/Bnai Mitzvah Teacher/Technical Wiz Mitch Cohen have assembled an array of
virtual Religious Services, and Educational and Inspirational Programs to keep us all connected with one another as a
congregational family.
Just as the virus crisis was unfolding in the days that followed Purim, I formed a Virus Response Task Force to plan for our
operations during these health emergencies. Our initial response was to follow and react to the the-rapidly changing
CDC guidelines, and to formulate a protocol for cleaning and sanitation of our facilities. Our staff was trained on these
protocols, and this plan remains in place to re-start when our facilities are reopened. This committee and the Religious
Services Committee will continue to assess the situation with the health and safety of our congregants as our highest
concern.
I want to extend Congratulations and recognition to Rabbi Smolkin and Chris Hannon for their hard work in preparing
a successful grant application to the Jewish Foundation, which has now approved the grant of $528,800 to Adath
Israel in furtherance of our “Imagine Adath” initiative. This grant will be used to foster congregational relationships and
programming, including the establishment of a new position of Director of Engagement and Congregational
Programming. Thank you so much Rabbi and Chris! We also owe a great deal of thanks to the generosity of the Jewish
Foundation for their vision and leadership to allow us to better connect with ourselves and the Jewish community as
an investment in our future.
More congratulations to Assistant Rabbi Benjamin Chaidell, who will be promoted to the role of Associate Rabbi
beginning July 1.
Yet another announcement is that we will soon be welcoming our new
Director of Education, Rebekah Skirball Miller to Adath Israel. We will have
much more to tell you about Rebekah soon. We anticipate her arrival in
Cincinnati over the summer, so that all will be in place at the beginning of
next school year.
With Rebekah’s arrival, we are saddened also by the departure of Dara
Wood, who has served us so well as our Director of Education for nearly a
decade. Cont. on next page

As the school year was unexpectedly cut short, we were unable to follow through with our plans to celebrate Dara’s
many accomplishments and contributions. We WILL get the chance to celebrate with Dara as soon as we are up and
running again. I look forward to announcing a campaign to establish an endowment fund in Dara’s honor in the very
near future.
Please plan to participate in this year’s Annual Meeting of the Congregation. It will be held on a virtual platform this
year, at which time the congregation will be asked to elect a new slate of officers and board members, including the
elevation of Josh Lisman as my successor, and my promotion to Past President.
PLEASE – PLEASE – PLEASE plan to participate and vote at the Annual Meeting, so that this will be my last article as
President!!
Thank you to all of you who have put up with me for the past two years. It has been an interesting experience, and to
be honest, a rewarding one. I am leaving Adath Israel a vastly different place than when I started: New Rabbis … New
Cantors … New Chief Operating Officer … New Director of Education … New Programs … New Relationships … New
Challenges … and
A New Future for Adath Israel!

The ten chairs on the parking lot side
of the building are a sculpture called
“Minyan” created by the late Ray
Miller in memory of his parents. Ray
was not a member of Adath Israel but
wanted to show his appreciation for
being able to say Kaddish for his
parents at Adath Israel’s daily minyan.
Although the ten chairs are similar,
they vary in size to represent the
uniqueness of every individual who
makes up a minyan.
5 Message from Rabbi Emeritus & Annual Meeting I have known and worked with Dara Wood pretty much since
arriving at Adath Israel in 1992. Dara was a board member for years
and then an officer for many more. She served as chair of the Religious Services
Committee and the Religious School Board in addition to being both principal of
our Mercaz High School and then supervisor of all subsequent principals. Then, of
course, for ten years I worked with her and was her supervisor as Director of
Education and then also Ritual Director. Add to this her active participation in
religious services reading Torah, chanting haftarah, and leading davening for years
and being one of our Shir Ami vocalists from the very beginning. She has tutored
many bar and bat mitzvah students in addition to adults wanting to learn how to
participate in daily, Shabbat, and Yom Tov services. Dara has trained all our HUC
rabbinic interns in leading services and with only a few exceptions, in davening to
begin with. She also provided a valuable orientation to both Rabbi Chaidell and to
Rabbi Smolkin. I cannot tell you how many times she covered “my you know what”
on the bimah as she has done for so many others when we missed things or were
about to. She did this because she felt responsible to us personally to help us be as
good as we could be and as responsive to the congregants as possible. Dara has
supervised many Coordinators of Youth and Family Programming, chairs of Mitzvah Day, Purim carnivals,
arranged and prepared all our youth service participants for Purim, Yom Kippur, our Youth Shabbat, and more.
She supervised the staff responsible for bar and bar mitzvah training, coordinating prayer leaders, Torah and our
daily minyan leaders. I could go on, but I will stop here.
Whatever Dara does, she does with a deep commitment and love for Judaism, our synagogue, and our
community. She has a deep understanding of and appreciation for our history as a Jewish people and our
history as a congregation, a 170 plus year old
Conservative synagogue, profoundly respecting
traditions and customs that provide for our
continuity and our future. Dara has brought warmth,
compassion, understanding, genuineness, patience,
honesty, and integrity to her work and to us. She has
an extraordinary work ethic (as demonstrated
dramatically during this COVID-19 crisis when she is
a proverbial lame duck employee!) and is an
exemplary professional and a role model for years
to many of her colleagues and her staff. Because of
their work with Dara in our community, Rabbinic
colleagues of mine have great respect and regard
for her as a person and a professional.
As her supervisor, I valued her input, perspective,
and respectful disagreeing with me which often
resulted in helping me make better decisions. She is
strong, discrete, confidential, loyal and can kibbutz,
schmooze, and laugh with others and—a great
strength—at herself. Dara is able to step back and
be self-critical, acknowledge when she has been
mistaken and when appropriate, apologize—more
examples of why Dara is the special, special person,
Jew and professional she is and an example for us
to try to emulate. It would be fair to say that I know
Dara as well if not better than anyone at Adath
Israel. Therefore, I can also say that proverbially, our
loss will be someone’s incredibly significant and
great gain.

Chicago area off and on for about 30 years. In her
heyday she performed at all the local comedy clubs in
Chicago and the suburbs, as well as others in the Midwest.
For the most part, lately, she “has been funny for free.”
Rhonda always sees things on the funny side of life and
manages to keep others around her always laughing. She
lives in Buffalo Grove, IL with her husband of almost 47
years, Dave. She has two grown children, Alyssa and Ted,
and their wonderful spouses, and 6 grandchildren, 4 in
Chicago and 2 near San Francisco. Thanks to FaceTime,
she visits with her California grandkids at least once a day.
Rhonda is active in her own sisterhood and is a past
Central Great Lakes Region president.

7 Circle of Friends & Service Times There is Life After Loss:
Adath Israel’s “Circle of Friends” Offers Help in Times of Need
Life turned upside down for Patti Wise when she lost her first husband, Jeffrey, more than 30 years ago. With four young children
to raise, she remembers it as the hardest time in her life. The Jewish community reached out to her right away.
“The community and Clare Evans from JFS basically saved my life,” Patti said.
After remarrying, in her spare time, she was a bereavement group facilitator for both adults and children. But after 17 years as
a teacher and 10 years as a facilitator, Patti wanted to give back in a different way.
“When I lost Jeff, there was no bereavement group available for me, I knew no other young widows and there was definitely
no Jewish group in the area.”
When Patti got the idea to start her own Jewish bereavement group, she approached her friend Barbara Schwartz.
Barbara lost her husband, Richard, in 2012 after he battled illness on and off for 20 years.
“In spite of anticipatory grief, when he died, it was raw. No matter how expected it is, it is always raw,” Barbara said.
After Richard’s passing, the hospice started a support group for young widows. Barbara loved this group but she often felt it
would be great to have a Jewish group.
“When Patti approached me four years ago, I felt it was important for me to give back something I didn’t have,” Barbara said.
“And we noticed a need.”
So Patti and Barbara formed the group called “Circle of Friends” at Adath Israel. The Jewish component was important for
both of them because there are so many Jewish traditions around loss. Over dessert and coffee, Patti and Barbara facilitate
discussions on different topics.
“We let the session flow according to the needs of the group.” Patti said. “It’s informal, but we stay within boundaries so it is a
comfortable, safe, confidential space.”
For those who are interested, the group often organizes outings outside of the meetings.
“The group helps people acclimate to their ‘new normal’
and feel a little bit more comfortable and secure moving
forward, “Barbara explains,” “And it’s an opportunity to
create a powerful bond with others in similar situations.”
Circle of Friends is open to anyone in the Jewish community
who has experienced a deep loss. New attendees are always
welcome and there is no commitment. Currently the the group
is meeting online every Wednesday evening. Email Patti Wise,
[email protected], for more information.
“There is life after loss, no matter what age, no matter the
circumstance,” said Barbara. “It’s amazing to see progress -
sadness turn to laughter, doubts into confidence, and when
someone who didn’t feel the strength to go on alone, now
has so much strength in daily life.”

Barry and I have lived in this community for many years. We have seen it grow stronger and more
relevant to Jews today, and we have benefited from its vibrancy and prosperity. We have had
opportunities to succeed. The community has given to us, and we embrace the obligation to give
back so that the next generations have an even better environment. Even though our grandchildren
do not live here, in their communities someone is taking care of
their future and we want to do the same for Cincinnati's grandchildren. Adath Israel has been
a cornerstone of our lives. We have celebrated all kinds of simchas with our Adath family. During my
three years as president of the congregation I had the chance to deeply engage in all the shul offers
and understand how it is a central and crucial part of the lives of so many. Creating our legacy to
help keep Adath vital for the next generation - well, it is more than just the right thing to do, it is a
mitzvah for all us, no matter the size of the commitment. And Barry and I have made our legacy
commitment to Adath Israel.
