Dear Brothers and Sisters
WE ARE AT the beginning of the new year of the Church. It reminds us of a new beginning in our life style as Christians.
It reminds us also to start anew, renew our faith and give our life new spiritual orientation. All of us have somewhere and
somehow experienced failures in life and realized that many of our plans and good resolutions have remained unfulfilled,
and therefore we understand all the better, the value given us again a new year to take a fresh look at ourselves and to
mold our lives according to the pattern set out in the Gospel. Advent is the time to prepare ourselves for the coming of
Christ. Advent means ‘coming of the future’.
IT IS NATURAL that we think about our future. We are eager to know what is going to happen and be prepare for it. The
season of Advent is a time to prepare our hearts to welcome the One who is going to come into our life. The good news is
that Jesus will come. The liturgical season of Advent reminds us of our identity as people of hope, people waiting for the
second coming of Christ. The season of Advent is an open invitation to live our life with a yearning to meet Christ at His
second coming. This would mean readiness to face all sorts of painful and disappointing realities of life with unshakable
hope in the ‘beyond’ His second coming.
WHEN CHRIST BECOMES the foundation and destiny of our life, our faith in the coming of the Lord can be an inspiration
beyond any comparison. If we believe in Christ, we will have inexhaustible energy to live in Christ even in the face of
frustrating situations and it will help us to have hope. For all Christians the season of Advent is a call to become living
witnesses of hope and encouragement to those imprisoned in cells of frustration and disappointment. This season invites
us to become lighthouses for those who have lost direction in life. when we live our lives in this manner, we will be able
to welcome the Lord as those waiting for the Bridegroom.
MY DEAR BROTHERS and sisters let us use this season of Advent as an opportunity to prepare ourselves spiritually to
welcome the Child Jesus into our homes and into our hearts. We have twenty five days ahead of us before we celebrate
the great feast of the birth of our Lord, and the church is inviting us to spend little more time with the Lord everyday so
that He can sanctify us and purify us. Christ’s daily comings into our lives are the focus of our Advent preparations. If we
open ourselves to Him daily, we will be full of holiness and readiness to greet Him with joy on Christmas day. In its deepest
meaning, Advent is both a longing to have Christ with us here on earth and a yearning to return with Him to heaven.
Advent stirs our love and longing for God and for home. Advent is a lesson for life. If we live in preparation for the coming
of Christ daily, we will certainly have a merry Christmas. May God bless you and your families.

WEEKLY JUSTICE CHALLENGE
This week marks the beginning of
Advent. We are challenged by the
Scriptures to be alert and vigilant, and
to recognize that the Messiah the Jews
prayed for would bring justice to our
world. The first reading describes Jerusalem in the era of
the Messiah as “The Lord Our Justice.”
Your challenge this week is to reflect on how you have
helped bring more justice into the world, and to pay
attention (being very vigilant) to an injustice that exists in
your local community. Then decide as a household one
specific step you can take to end the injustice and uphold
the human rights of all.
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
(This is a new series for our parish based on
the Sunday readings from The Pastoral
Center!)
Theme: The Habit of Prayer— Be alert at all
times, praying that you may have the
strength to escape all these things that will take place,
and to stand before the Son of Man. (Luke 21:36)
Readings:
Jeremiah 33:14-16 - Restoration of Jerusalem
1 Thess. 3:12–4:2 - Plea for growth in holiness
Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 - Coming of the son of man
Ask...
Adults: What have been the strengths of your prayer life?
What habit of prayer could you strengthen during this
Advent season?
Kids: What prayers will you say each day and each week
during Advent?

BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH
The Advent wreath is a popular custom that is celebrated in churches and homes all over the world. Its Christian
symbolism was introduced in Germany in the 1600s. The wreath is made of a circle of evergreens in which are placed
three purple candles and one pink (rose) candle. The circular shape of the wreath reminds us that the love of God is
without beginning or end. The evergreens represent the hope of everlasting, or eternal, happiness. The candles remind us
that Jesus, the Light of the World, came to Earth to overcome the darkness of sin and selfishness. The purple candles
represent our need to prepare for the coming of the Savior, and the pink (rose) candle—lit on the Third Sunday of
Advent—reminds us to be joyful, for the coming of the Lord is near!
Begin by reading either 1. Isaiah 9: 1-2, 5-6 (The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.) or
2. 1 John 1: 5-7 (God is light; walk in the light.)
Reflection: 1. Think of ways that things give light. 2. Next, name ways that people give light. 3. Finally, think of one
way you can share the light of Jesus with another person in the week to come.
Prayer Response: Come, Lord Jesus.
1. For the Church, working to share your Good News with all, we pray –
2. For the world, especially places longing for peace, we pray –
3. For the hungry, the homeless, and all in need, we pray –
4. For the sick, and for all who care for them, we pray –
5. For each of us gathered here today, we pray –
BLESSING Prayer: Loving God, your Son, Jesus Christ, is the Light of the World. Bless us as we light this wreath and enter
into the season of Advent. May its candles remind us to share Christ’s light through our words and deeds. Amen. (Light the
first candle of the Advent wreath.) ~RCLBenzinger

CHRISTMAS WAFERS
THE CHRISTMAS WAFER (Oplatek)
a custom many centuries old.
It is a tradition among Polish, Slovak, and
Lithuanian families, which has been adopted by many other
ethnic groups.
THE TRADITION IS AS FOLLOWS:
After grace is said and before sitting down to the Christmas
Eve (or Christmas Day) meal, all present share the wafer as a
symbol of love, brotherhood, innocence, and Christ. The
father (or oldest person present) breaks the wafer with his
wife (or next oldest person) exchanging wishes for health and
happiness. Then the Oplatek is broken with others, beginning
with the oldest child, also sharing wishes for happiness,
health and good fortune. When the wafer is accepted, a
willingness to forgive and forget is expressed; when it is
offered to another, a willingness to share is denoted.
To help continue this beautiful tradition of love and
peace of the Christmas season, we make Christmas
Wafers (Oplatek) available after all Masses.*

PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY
CALLING ALL THE people who would like to
contribute to making prayer quilts! If you have
ideas about what the best quilts would look
like, or you would like to make a quilt on your own but
just don't know how to go about it – we can use your
talents and your interest. We can even help you get
started on a quilt or finish one you’ve already started.
You have no idea how we can help you and you can help us
– unless you call and/or come to the next meeting on the
first Friday of the month, after the 9:30 mass.
DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO NEEDS THE COMFORT OF
A PRAYER QUILT?
CALL THE ST. Mary Parish office at 248-685-1482 to arrange
for that person to receive the benefits of a prayer quilt.
THE GIVING TREE
TAGS ARE ON THE TREE!
THE TREES ARE up and the tags are
available. Please help those in need in our
community by taking a tag either from
the bulletin board or one of the trees.
AFTER PURCHASING YOUR gift, please
return it to the area in the courtyard lobby.
Please be sure to securely attach the tag to the gift
with the gift description facing up.
ALL GIFT CERTIFICATES may be returned to the basket
also located in the courtyard lobby, again with the tag
securely attached and gift description facing up.
PLEASE PURCHASE ONLY the gift that is on the tag.
Many of you like to add items for the children, but please
remember most of the children on the tree have siblings.
When additional gifts are purchased for one tag, it creates
an imbalance of gifts for all the children in the family.
If you would like to do more, then please take additional
tags.
IF YOU LOSE your tag after purchasing your gift, not to
worry, just give us a call and we can figure out what
numbers belong on your gift.
Please return all gifts and certificates by December 12th.
IF YOU ARE unable to purchase your gift (there are many
reasons why this could happen), lose your tag, or can
not return your gift by the due date, please call JV at
(248)-685-1482 prior to December 14th.
WE BEGIN PURCHASING all missing gifts on December
14th, so that no Giving Tree recipient is disappointed.

ADORATION AND
ADVENT
BEGINNING WITH NEXT
Sunday, we will enter into
the Holy Liturgical Season
of Advent. It includes the four
Sundays before Christmas.
The word “Advent” refers to a
coming; an arrival. It is a time
of expectation and preparation for the birth of Jesus, the
Promised Messiah; God’s Gift to the world; the Prince of
Peace; the Only One Who can bring us salvation and
peace. Hopefully this year, we will once again begin to
celebrate the many traditional customs which lead us to
Christmas; Advent prayers and hymns, concerts, parades,
gift giving and sharing food with family and with those
who are needy, and especially our family gatherings,
which are so important at this very special time of year.
Some were greatly missed last year due to the covid virus.
ONE WAY OF preparing for the beautiful feast of Christmas
is to come to Eucharistic Adoration, preparing and opening
our hearts for a personal encounter with Jesus, just as
friends who love each other visit regularly. It is quiet time
spent in prayer before Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament, a
sign of devotion to -----and worship of Jesus. Yes, we can
pray to Jesus anywhere, but it is more powerful to adore
Him in the presence of the Eucharist, where He is truly
present; Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity------in “His
Home.” It is a time to express our love and praise,
thanksgiving and concerns, a time to ask for all the
graces and guidance that we need. We can read Scripture,
pray the Rosary or other favorite prayers, or just sit and
converse with Him. Just as He, long ago, came to bring
His Love, Healing and Peace to a needy world, perhaps if
we draw closer to Jesus, we can bring His Message of Love
and Peace to our needy country and world.
YOU WILL SOON experience the effects of your visit----
PEACE, JOY, HOLINESS, HEALING AND NOT TO FORGET---
HIS EVERLASTING AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
Satisfaction is guaranteed. We are in need of a few people
to commit to an hour, or to be a substitute when an
adorer cannot keep their time. Please consider giving this
wonderful devotion a chance to permeate your life with
the One Who created it. Please at least give it a try and
keep our devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament
ongoing.
“O COME LET US ADORE HIM.”
Please call me at 248-685-3933.
Until next week,
Love and Prayers,
Arlene Loehr
P.S. “Jesus, come to us, lead us to Your Light. Jesus be
with us, for we need You.” the perfect time to “Come Let
Us Adore Him.”
LAKES AREA RIGHT TO LIFE
ST. JOSEPH TOOK Mary and Jesus out of
Bethlehem into Egypt when threatened.
A historic HERO. Like St. Joseph, men
instinctively want to protect.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS organizations, such as the one
we have at St. Mary’s, have answered the call. They are
our today HEROES too. The Knights have contributed for
years by buying ultrasounds machines for clinics and
centers. They save lives! Consider joining the Knights,
Lakes Area Right to Life or a pregnancy center. Rise up
men and answer the call! There is nothing more loving
than savings lives.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love
and self-control.

TODAY AS WE celebrate Christ the King, may we open the door of our heart so wide that we may listen to the
voice of Jesus calling us to help build His kingdom here on earth.
This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s kingdom of love and

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP -
RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
Preparing the Manger
WHERE DO YOU fall in the “Christmas-songs-in-
November” debate — do you like them, tolerate them, or
outright hate them? There’s no theological problem with
Christmas songs in November outside of worship, even if
it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But there is a problem
with getting so caught up in the baggage of the season —
the trimmings, the gifts, the celebrations, all of which are
marvelous in their own way — that you forget to prepare
the manger.
EVERY GOOD CATHOLIC knows that Lent is a penitential
season. It’s hard to miss that point — Lent doesn’t even
have any fun songs you can groove to on the radio. We
are pretty good at recognizing that Lent calls us to
examine ourselves. To deny ourselves. To give of ourselves.
And most of all, Lent calls us to prepare, as a good steward
does, for the return of our master.
IT’S HARDER FOR us to remember that with Advent, but
Advent is just as much of an opportunity for penance,
preparation, and reconciliation to God — and just as much
reason, too. The very name of the season — “advent” —
encourages us to focus on what is coming, not what is
already here. Be on guard, the readings tell us today, “so
that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation
and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and (the
coming of the Lord) catch you unexpectedly, like a trap.”
SO LET US not forget — our master’s advent is upon us.
And let us ask ourselves: how can we prepare the manger?
— Tracy Earl Welliver, MT ©LPi
NEXT WEEKEND’S LITURGY
Second Sunday of Advent
Introduction
GOD’S WORD IS a message of hope, and it has
long been proclaimed in difficult times of
exile, imprisonment and political turmoil. For
those of us weary of dark news, the message
may be a momentary relief on this Sunday.
But do we believe it? What will it take for this
word to settle deep in our hearts and even motivate us to
take hopeful action on behalf of those for whom hope is
meaningless? If not us, then who?
A voice of one crying
out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of
the Lord, make
straight his paths."
- Luke 3:4
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Bar 5:1-9 A message of hope to those in exile.
Ps 126 The Lord has done great things for us; we are
filled with joy.
Phil 1:4-6, 8-11 The imprisoned Paul writes of hope for
Christians.
Lk 3:1-6 John proclaims hope for the coming of a savior.

MISSION APPEAL

On Saturday December 4th & Sunday, December 5th, Missionary Fr. Tomy Joseph will be here at St. Mary
to celebrate all the masses. The letter below describes the nature of his Missionary Appeal.
Welcome Fr. Tomy Joseph!
Request Letter for the Financial Support of Retired Fransalians in the USA!
The Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (MSFS), known as Fransalians, is an international
Religious Congregation founded in the year 1838 in Annecy, France by Servant of God Fr Peter
Marie Mermier. The Heavenly patron of the Congregation is St. Francis de Sales, known as
the Gentleman Saint, who is also a Doctor of the Church. Fransalians are currently serving in 32 countries in
the world and most of them are Mission Territories. The Generalate (Headquarters) of the Congregation is in
Rome, Italy.
The Fransalians have been serving the United States since 1969, beginning in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia.
There are 26 Dioceses/Archdioceses where about 80 Fransalian Priests are currently ministering to the people
of God.
Some of our priests are getting up in age, and we need to build a retirement facility in Atlanta, Georgia, close
to our Provincial House at 3887 Rosebud Road, Loganville, Georgia 30052. This facility will have 8 accessible
suites for individual priests with a common dining, kitchen, library, chapel, and gathering room. The estimated
cost for this project is approximately $1,675,000.00. Therefore, I humbly request you to support this project
for the retired priests with whatever donation you may be able to offer. Whatever you may joyfully give will
be greatly appreciated. There will be an additional collection in your parish towards this project with the
blessings of your pastor.
These Fransalian priests are men who have walked beside you, sometimes even from womb to tomb, providing
you spiritual service and nourishment. Some of them may still be walking with you and serving you by providing
the spiritual nourishment you need daily. They have touched and transformed you and refreshed your life every
day to experience God within you and around you. Now, in turn, they are in need of your touch, tender care,
and nourishment in the evening of their lives. It is a fitting homage now to take care of them and stand by
them, who stood by you in the time of your need. Any help from you to this project will be greatly appreciated.
Donations can be made to your parish with a specification on the memo line: Fransalian Retirement Facility.
If anyone wishes to make a special donation directly to support this project, it can be made to the Missionaries
of St. Francis de Sales, Inc. and sent to the MSFS Provincial House in Atlanta, Georgia. Anyone who is able to
support this project with more than $50,000.00, one of the rooms will be dedicated in their honor/memory.
All contributions are tax-exempt.
A special word of thanks to you on behalf of our Fransalian priests working in your parish. Your support and
help will definitely be appreciated and acknowledged by the Fransalian Community. We assure you of our humble
prayers and love to you and your loved ones. May God continue to bless you and your family.
United in His Love,
Very Rev. Tomy J. Puliyan, MSFS
