BIOMASS FIRED BURNER REDUCESNOx AND INCREASES PRODUCTION FOR MDF PLANT
RESULTSLOW NOx - COEN achieved the guaranteed 25% reduction in NOx
RELIABLE - The burner system proved stable and reliable for both fuels
EFFICIENT - Utilized waste by-product as fuel
LOWER VOC - Incinerated press exhaust gas in theair heater chamber
SOLUTION
A special burner system, using the DAZ Scroll Feed Burner and directional front wall air ports, was implemented for this project. The new scroll feed burner system provided the MDF Plant with a reliable and stable combustion system for sander dust and natural gas.
The majority of the NOx produced by wood fuel results from the conversion of fuel bond nitrogen (FBN) originating from the resins used in the board making process. By utilizing the air staging technology, COEN significantly lowered the FBN conversion percentage. This allowed COEN to successfully reduce the MDF Plant’s NOx 25% from baseline.
A Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) Plant in Montana needed to increase production by adding a new thin MDF line. The facility required a staged burner system that could utilize their waste by-product (sander dust) and natural gas for fuel. The plant also desired a 25% reduction of NOx from their baseline. Furthermore, the MDF Plant wanted to recirculate press exhaust gas and incinerate it in the COEN air heater chamber to reduce VOC emissions. The WESTEC fiber dryer system specified a COEN low NOx biomass burner system to provide the 90mmBtu/hr heat source.

Biomass Combustion Systems
Coen Responsibility forTotal System DesignCOEN is capable of supplying key combustion andemission control equipment including:
• Biomass Burner
• Combustion Chamber
• Storage/Metering Bin
• Conveying System
Benefits and Features of the COEn Dual Air Zone (DAZ) Scroll Feed Burner • The multi-fuel DAZ allows other fuels to be burned separately or in combination with biomass fuels.
• The “Dual Air Zone” feature with concentric louvers divides the combustion air streams into twocounter-rotating concentric streams for superior mixing.
• By utilizing COEN’s standard DAZ register, solid fuel performance is similar to the fossil fuels it replaces.
• The adjustable flame pattern is suitable for typical industrial furnace and package boiler applications.
• Air streams scrub against each other providing a turbulent, controllable mixing action with fuels.
• The biomass scroll design introduces solid fuels uniformly into an annulus between the twocounter-rotating air streams.
• The DAZ Scroll Burner promotes early ignition, creating a stable flame and optimal combustion.
• Grinder (Mill)
• Cyclone Separator
• Particulate Emission Control
• Total Turnkey Capability

The use of by-products as a source of energy replaces expensive fossil
fuels, eliminates difficult and costly disposal problems and reduces fuel costs
for generating existing or new processes.
Biomass CombustionProvides Energy Savings
Industries throughout the world use biomass wastes that area natural by-product of their plant operation. These by-products can fuel existing processes, supplement or replace fossil fuels, or
cogenerate power.
Biomass Waste Products Include:
Food Processing Industries
Coffee grounds
Peanut shells
Apple pomace
Peach pits
Sunflower seed hulls
Emissions reduction COEN’s low NOx air heater design allows for air staging via adjustable front wall ports. This feature significantly reduces NOx on high fuel-bound nitrogen fuels. Our unique chamberis designed for long life, resulting in less maintenance and reduced downtime. This practicalapplication is offered with COEN’s biomass combustion controls for accurate air/fuel ratios, allowing simultaneous firing of two or more fuels and varying fuel compositions.
