Meet the Candidates NightMeet the Candidates Night will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the Senior High School Auditorium. There are four candidates running for two open seats on the Board of Education. Board Candidates are as follows: David R. Lopez, Richard A. Vogan, Jennifer Wackowski, and Kenneth West. Each candidate will be introduced to the public by a student representative who will read the biography for each candidate. The candidates will then have an opportunity to present their platform for becom-ing a candidate for the Board of Education. At the conclusion of their speech, we will open up the floor for any questions from the public for the individual candidates. If there are no questions from the floor and/or if time remains, the student representatives will ask the candidates one standard question and then one random question.

LIONS CLUB EASTER RABBIT WINNERS Easter morning was a little “sweeter” for the choc-olate rabbit winners listed below: 3 ft Rabbits, Nancy Jurik, Jack Chiap-pone, B. Higgins; 2 ft Rabbits, Mike Kittering, Hank Killeen, Ann Hussey; 18 in. Rabbits, Matt Brooks, Kurt, B. Hig-gins. The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. stated that the money raised from this raffle will help Lions Club projects and programs in the towns of Evans and Brant. There are never any “administrative costs” de-ducted from donations to any Lions Club. All monies raised from the public must be spent to help the public. Club “administrative costs” are covered by funds raised from member Lions thru dues and assessments. Lions clubs are involved in sight conservation and other humanitarian activi-ties. They also collect “pop top” can tabs at the Green Zone Redemption Center on Rt. 5 in Evans Center. There is a container to drop them in when you are redeeming your bottles and cans. Monies from these tabs are donated to “Wings Flights of Hope” which provides needy indi-viduals free airplane flights to medical facilities for treatment. All were welcomed by the coordinator of Volun-teers: Dave Topar. A brief history of the founding of the mission was given and students were given a peek at the multi-purpose cam-pus. Lake Shore Middle School students also served the needy hotdogs/sandwiches, macaroni salad, soup/crack-ers, and a sweet treat while woking in a cafeteria. All of the homeless were appreciative. LADY EAGLES LA-CROSSE WINS The Lady Eagles of Varsity lacrosse celebrated a victory of 9-8 over the Amherst Lady Tigers on Tuesday, April 17. As the team will surely agree, Alie Jimerson was the star player of the game scoring 5 of the 9 Lake Shore goals; 7th grader Shayla Scanlan stayed strong at center. At the other end of the field the defense tamed the Tigers when they attacked. Holding strong in goal, Courtney Black stopped 7 shots on net. Vivian Curry, Marissa Haring, and Ki-ersten Kennedy played a large part in the victory by keeping the midfield moving, causing turnovers and making intercep-tions. The Lady Tigers are the defending division C cham-pions for the past five years. Our own Lady Eagles made it well known that there is new competition in town.

LS GIRLS’ VARSITY TRACK & FIELDWIN OPENER On Tuesday, the Lake Shore Girls’ Varsity Track and Field Team defeated the Warriors of Cheektowaga by a score of 72-69. This win was a true result of great teamwork and perserver-ance from all members on the team. Specifically, it was thanks to the crucial wins in our relays and field events that helped lead Lake Shore to a victory. Our 4x8 relay made up of Megan Dillon, Mary Beth Benzing, Em-ily George and Alyssa Kij and our 4x4 relay made up of Taylor Bates, Sum-mer Weinheimer, Claudia Koenig an Mary Beth Benz-ing, both took first places. Double winners Mary Beth Benzing, Taylor Bates and Summer Weinheimer swept the pole vault, triple jump, the one mile, and the 400 and 800 meter runs. Senior and captain Lauren Jakiel took second place in the high jump, Vicky John-son took first in the discus and freshmen super-star, Emily George, gained 15 points for the team by taking first place in the two mile and third place in the 800 meter. Newcomers Maria Perna, Marissa Paluch, Katelyn Kennedy, Miranda Aiken, Mikayla Oldenberg, Made-line Kromer and Madison Bates all helped the team defeat Cheektowaga and experienced personal bests.

LADY EAGLES SOFTBALL TEAM DEFEATS EDEN In what was their abso-lute best game of the season to date, the Lady Eagles Var-sity Softball team defeated a very tough Eden Squad 1 - 0. Senior Tallie Papke, making her pitching debut, threw an outstanding com-plete game 3 hit shutout with 5 strikeouts. She man-aged to keep Eden off bal-ance at the plate and when they hit the ball, the defense behind her provided her with exceptional support. While the Lady Eagles played solid defense, they also had an offensive awak-ening with 7 hits from seven different players: Hayley Hammer, Machala An-drews, Sam Mancini, June Longbine, Darian Evans, Jessica Ackley and Alexis Cvetanovich. Cvetanovich was able to drive in Darian Evans for the game winning run in the 2nd inning and that proved to be enough, although the Eagles had other opportunities leaving bases loaded in the 2nd and 3rd innings.

Budget Edition
T he Lake Shore Central School District Class of 2025 will begin their thirteen-
year journey to graduation this September. Their futures will be shaped by their experiences in our classrooms, on stages and on the playing fields of Lake Shore Central Schools. I cannot even begin to imagine the technological advances and educational initi-atives that will be in place when the Class of 2025 accepts their diplomas. What I do know is that Lake Shore Central School District has proposed a budget for the coming 2012-2013 school year that is designed to support the educational needs of our students and streamline efficiencies in the District. The proposed budget will support our students’ educational experiences, fund state and federal education mandates and meet operating costs and contractual obligations for the 2012-2013 school year. This issue of the Eagle Express highlights the proposed District budget for the 2012-2013 school year (Proposition One), the District Vehicle Purchase Referendum (Proposition Two), information on candidates seeking election to the Board of Education and voter qualifications. Preparing an annual budget is a very difficult job as we review revenue and anticipated expenses for the operation of our District for next year. Our expenses continue to increase while revenues decrease. Many in-depth discussions and meetings have oc-curred in the development of our annual budget. We cannot fund the programs and education of our students without your help. A portion of our revenue does come from property taxes collected at the local level as well as aid from NYS and the federal governments. We also seek out grants or other means to generate revenue to keep the local taxpayers’ portion as low as possible. Unfortunately just like in the past few years our gap between revenue and expenses has
grown resulting in reductions in programs, staffing, transportation and overall supplies and materials. Our Board of Education has worked diligently to prepare a budget and to keep the local tax levy increase at 1.88%. Almost $2,000,000 has been reduced to meet the difficult challenge of the New York State imposed tax cap levy. This fiscal plan main-tains the integrity of our overall instructional program, but includes some reductions in other areas of the budget for next year. The District Vehicle Purchase Referendum (Proposition 2), authorizing the purchase of school buses and District vehicles, has been designed to maximize state aid reimbursements, ultimately reducing the local taxpayer share of the buses. The Board of Education and Administrative Team are dedicated to preparing a responsive budget, using federal and state aid, tax levy and fund balance to provide the revenue resources needed to provide a quality education for our 2,650 children attending District schools. This June, the Class of 2012 will receive their diplomas and embark on the next phase of their journey—just as our incoming kindergartners are preparing to begin their education next September. Education is part of the legacy we provide for the children of our community. We must not let them down!
I would encourage you to cast your ballot on May 15 when our 2012-2013
Annual Budget Vote, Vehicle Purchase Referendum and Board of Education Election take place. Without your support, additional changes and reductions will occur resulting in fewer program opportunities made available to our children. Voting takes place in the High School Main Lobby from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Your vote is important!

Madison McCarthy Car-diac Care shared a wonder-ful opportunity on April 23rd and 24th at South-towns Catholic School. They hosted the first of many Cardiac Screening Programs throughout West-ern New York schools. The screening was free of charge and took place during regular school hours. All that was needed to participate was a signed Participation Agreement form and a Heart Healty Survey. The screening included: • Heart Health Survey • Blood Pressure • Physical Heart Exami-nation •Elec t rocard iogram (EKG) • E c h o c a r d i o g r a m (ECHO) if medically indi-cated. While the prevailing perception is that heart disease is primarily an adult disease, there are thou-sands of seemingly healthy youth who suddenly and unexpectedly suffer fatal or severely debilitating conse
CARDIAC CARE COMES TO SCS quences due to undetected heart conditions. Madison McCarthy Car-diac Care advocates for heart screenngs in youth for the early detection of risk factors and conditions associated with sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Most heart conditions that can lead to SCA are not detect-able with a stethoscope. Many heart conditions can be detected with simple, noninvasive and painless tests, a comprehensive re-view of personal and family heart history and the proper assessment and folow-up of warning signs and symp-toms, if any. As children grow their hearts change and repeated evaluations are often need-ed. If a child is diagnosed with a heart condition, there are many precautionary steps that can be taken to prevent the likely outcome of SCA including lifestyle modifications, medication, surgical treatments, and implanting of a pacemaker and/or implantable cario-verter defibrillator (ICD).

SAMBORA NAMED TEACHER OFTHE WEEK Immaculata Academy proudly announces that Dave Sambora has been named the Teacher of the Week by WKBW Channel 7. Station personality Mike Randall surprised Sambora with the award in front of the entire school. Imma-culata Academy Principal Jill Monaco gathered the unaware school body into the auditorium to announce “good news,” and as she led Randall into the auditorium, students erupted into cheers after Randall approached Sam-bora and announced the honor. During the presentation, Ran-dall read a portion of the letter nominating Sambora, who has been with the Imma-culata Academy for over a decade. Sambora is a freshman his-tory teacher known for his sense of humor, presence at school events, and ability to connect with students struggling with circumstances in and out of school. He is modest, and in reflecting on the award, his response illustrates the humility his peers have come to expect. “There’s a part of you that feels guilty getting (the award) because of all the great teaching that’s going on,” he said. “The way I think of it is that I’m rep-resenting my colleagues. (The award is) more representative of what people do collectively in this building.” However, Monaco refer-ences the compliments in his nomination letter as she talks about his deservedness and importance to the school.” “The sentiments included in this letter echo what everyone feels here at Immaculata,” she said. “He’s a corner stone of IA. We couldn’t ask for a better role model for our young ladies.” As the television camera filmed, Randall asked Sambora if he had anything to say, and after cracking a typical joke, he turned to the students, paused and added, “I don’t know what to say-I love you guys.” Video from the surprise award can be found at Face-book.com/Immaculata Academy. Sambora poses with the award in front of the student body.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is helping children during after school hours, providing job op-portunities for Lake Shore Central graduates, and with continued community sup-port will make a difference in the lives of our most precious asset, our children.
It is said that times are difficult and finding com-mon ground is a challenge. Recently common ground was shared by all in the Lake Shore Central School District. The Lake Shore Central Teachers Associaton, staff and administration held a Dress Casual Day to benefit students attending the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore. A check was presented for $457.55 to the director of the program, Andrea Sunday by LSCTA president Michael Frew.

The wonderful program at Hoag School which pro-vides academic, social/emotional, and physical support will have more op-portunities to assist students through this monetary gift.
We all know that exer-cise is good for our bodies physically, but we have to remember that it also dramatically positively im-pacts us mentally as well. Lake Shore 2015: Fresh-men Seminar, students are currently learning the POSITIVE, healthy and legal means of dealing with stress, depression and anxiety. One such way in-volves exercising; exercise increases our endorphins which enable us to feel euphoria (joy) and blocks our receptors from notic-ing or feeling pain (mental or physical). Why turn to drugs, alcohol or other forms of abuse when there

are healthier alternatives out there? Students spent one of their seminar classes down in Lake Shore’s open and accessible fitness center, which is available ev-ery day for students to use, and they learned how to stretch, breathe and weight-train using free weights. Not only did stu-dents leave more awake and energized, but they also had and will continue to have higher senses of self-esteem that will hope-fully motivate them to con-tinue such healthy habit! Pictured are freshmen students using the gym equipment in the Lake Shore Fitness Center.

A Message from the Faith Bible Baptist Church
A report recently said that 24% of all children in America are on behavioral drugs. I hope I heard wrong. God did not make us to need drugs to survive our childhood.
Children have more available to them today than ever: football, soccer, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, gymnastics, track & field, swimming, iPods, iPads, cable TV, Toys ’R Us, cell phones, Boys & Girls club, etc… It’s a kids dream world! But little peace. Some have no peace.
New York State is currently spending $14,000-17,000 per student each year to educate them. After investing this much for 10-11 years, 5 out of 10 in the city and 3 out of 10 in the country drop out before getting a diploma. The ones who stay get a handshake and a diploma, but no peace. At least they have more of an open door to go forward than the dropout, but at a price. Another report last week said for the first time in our country’s history, student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt. With the debt comes great stress, worry, and to some fear - not peace.
“For the kids,” chant parents, grandparents, politicians and educators. What is for the kids? 1 out of 4 are on “legal” stimulants or depressants just so they can live with themselves or function in a family. Is this progress? Weren’t things better when children were taught that life is not about them, but about God and others?
60% of the children in our country 12 years of age and under have never set foot in a church except for a wedding, funeral, Christmas or Easter.
Other studies have shown that regular church attendance, prayer and meditation improve a person’s health and happiness. The have more peace.
Look at the verse at the top of this page again. Meditate on it. Have your children and grandchildren been taught of the Lord or kept from Him? If we let the Lord teach them, what will they
have? Peace - no! Great peace!
Kids have more things than ever, but you can’t buy peace for them. That comes from the Lord Jesus - the Prince of Peace.
Jesus said, “Suffer (permit) the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the Kingdom of God,” Luke 18:16. We can’t disobey this commandments and expect things to go well for our kids.
He also said, “Whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein,” Luke 18:17. Plus - “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven,” Matthew 18:3.
It is easier to teach children about God than it is to teach adults. They are more open. When a child accepts Christ as their Savior, they will have God with them all the days of their life.
After my mother died of cancer when I was 4 years old, my life went to pieces. Our family was wrecked. Alcohol came in and didn’t help. by the time I was 12 I was a juvenile delinquent, full of anger and rage. I became a terror to myself. I had no peace inside. Dad loaded my two older brothers and myself in the car one Sunday and took us to a real Bible church. The Pastor introduced me to Jesus Christ the Lord. I found salvation from my sins and eternal life in Christ. With that came so much peace. I calmed down and my behavior changed. I could finally live with myself and with others. All because of Jesus Christ. The verse at the top is true!
We have many ministries for and to children. Don’t be afraid to give them a good try. Don’t come looking for fun, but for Christ. Kids today have too much fun and too little peace. Not religion - but Jesus can give them peace!
Pastor Art Kohl
What gives
Peace?
JESUS!

THREE “GREEN”PROGRAMS FOR EARTH DAY Rochester, NY - NYSEG and RG&E, subsidaries of Iberdrola USA, encourage customers to consider all three of the folowing envi-ronmentally-friendly energy programs as we prepare to mark Earth Day on April 22. e-Bill Service: NYSEG and RG&E offer several fre billing options that can help cut down on paper, checks and even stamps. To learn more about our e-Bill service and other options or sign up, visit www.nyseg. com or www.rge.com. Energy Efficiency Pro-gram: NYSEG and RG&E offer a variety of incentives to help customers reduce their energy consumption. Incentives include rebates fro energy efficient heating and HVAC equipment; a $30 rebate plus free pick-up and recycling of second refrigerators or freezers; free installation of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in up to six fixtures along with incentives up to 50% of the cost of common area lighting upgrades,; and a variety of equipment rebates for commercial, industrial, and municipal customers. For more information visit www.nyseg.com or www.rge.com. Catch the Wind: NY-SEG and RG&E offer cus-tomers the opportuity to purchase clean, renewable wind-generated electricity. Purchasing just $7.50 worth of wind-generated electric-ity every month for one year reduces carbon dioxide emission the equivalent of jplanting 30 tree seedlings that grow for 10 years or not driving 3,000 miles in a car. The monthly charge is added to participants’ NY-SEG or RG&E bills to help offset the added expense of delivering 300 kilowatt-hours of wind energy to the New York power grid. To learn more about purchasing wind-generated electricity, visit http://bit.ly/HfQg7C (NYSEG) or http://bit.ly/H9EM7j (RG&E). NYSEG and RG&E have a long history of recycling everything from paper and toner cartridges to trans-former oil and used electri-cal equipment. In addition,
the companies have been leaders in installing en-ergy-saving transformers that use vegetable-based cooling oil instead of petroleum oil and have replaced many gasoline-powered vehicles with hybrid or partial zero-emissions vehicles. “Our actions speak to our solid commitment to environmental steward-ship, and we strongly en-courage our customers to take steps to reduce their energy use to help protect the environment,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. ________
CALL BEFOREYOU DIG As spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner, National Fuel reminds residents to call 8-1-1, the toll-free national “Call Before You Dig” phone number, or visit www.call811.com, prior to planning any excavation projects this year. New York state law requires resi-dents to call 8-1-1- a free service- prior to digging projects to prevent acciden-tal damage to underground utility lines. The national 8-1-1 phone number connects callers with a One Call Center in their areas. Local One Call Center operators record the excavation locations and then notify National Fuel of the callers’ plans. National Fuel then dispatches pro-fessional locators to mark the approximate locations of National Fuel’s lines for free. Homeowners and con-tractors should call 8-1-1 at least two but no more than 10 business days in advance of the start of their projects to allow time for requests to be processed. This does not include the date of the call. Once your project is underway, and in obser-vance of the markings, you are required to stop using heavy equipment and hand dig within two feet of either side of the markings. The Call Before You Dig initiative is spnsored by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the leading asso-ciation created specifically to work with all industry stakeholders in an effort to prevent damage to under
Excavation damages for all underground facilities decreased by approximate-ly 50 percent from 2004 to 2008 due in large part to the promotion of 8-1-1, accord-ing to CGA. “All excavation projects require a call-even small or shallow digging proj-ects like planting trees and shrubs, or installing a fence or mailbox,” said Karen Merkel, spokesperson for National Fuel. “If you dam-age an underground util-ity line while digging, you run the risk of harming yourself or those around you, disrupting service to an entire neighborhood and potentially being held responsible for fines and repair costs.” National Fuel Gas Dis-tribution Corporation, the Utility segment of National Fuel Gas Company, pro-vides natural gas service to more than 500,000 custom-ers in western New York and more than 200,000 cus-tomers in northwestern Pennsylvania. Additional information about the Util-ity and its customer ser-vices is available at www.nationalfuelgas.com or by calling 1-800-365-3234.
ground utility infrastructure and ensure public safety and environmental pro-tection. The CGA and its stakeholders are dedicated to increasing awareness of safe digging practices across the country. The CGA, officially formed in 2000, represents a continu-ation of the U.S. Depart-ment of Transportation’s Common Ground Study-a study that highlighted the need for one organization to continuously update best practices among the grow-ing under-ground utility and industry.

ATTENTION:Lakeshore-Brant School Board,
Superintendent Przpasniak & TaxpayersIT’S NOT THE BUSES THAT ARE REALLY IMPORTANT;IT’S THE QUALITY OF OUR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION!
Why hasn’t the School Board demanded using that remodeling money to upgrade the scholastic results our children? ($1,560,000 proposed this year)Is it better to spend thousands of dollars on remodeling buildings, building new athletic fields, re-carpeting the football field and new buses OR spending these monies on improving scholastic results of our children’s Lake Shore education? We still owe $489,000 on the last 6 buses!Independent school district evaluations show now badly the Lake Shore education performs! The New York State Board of Regents District report card lists Lake Shore as having a 73% graduation rate! The April Board of Educa-tion agenda claims 90%. Buffalo’s Business First 2011 Academic Evaluation of the 8 Western New York county school districts lists Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) as being 59th out of 97 in academic ranking, 61st out of 97 in cost effectiveness and 82nd out of 97 in academic with socioeconomic profiles. In the past 2 years, what has Superintendent Przpasniak and the School Board done to improve the results of the education of our children?
