The new 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera cements its position as the best in its class in terms of combining exceptional performance, daily driveability, and efficiency. Brand new twin-turbocharged engines give the world's best-selling sports car a significant boost in power, with the greatest increase in torque in the history of 911 models; with the introduction of a new powertrain.

SUMMER 2017 n 3

I am ecstatic about the club getting off to a great start for the first half of the year! I have to say I’ve been to

quite a few events this year and have enjoyed listening to our members and their feedback on having an absolute blast! We have seen a lot of new faces and regular participants along with many returning longtime members this year. I feel this year is giving us an array of event choices for the club. I can only imagine what next year will bring.

Our tours are a major hit this year. On our first tour we “bugged” out to Antelope Island, then took a “gamble” on our Wendover, Salt Flats and Airfield Museum tour. We got “hot” and bothered on our Lava Hot Springs weekender, making it all good fun!

The eighth annual Amazing Rally was a huge success. I would like to give a special thanks to the Fehrs and the Rideouts for putting the rally together and making it all possible. We

to them and invited them to come and participate in the fun, as we would love to have them.

Then there are the Driver Educa-

tion events: I am pleased to see nice turnouts at our DE’s. I have to admit, I personally was left in an, “Aww, wow!” state of mind with the Pirelli Cup racing held in conjunction with our DE. This was one of those of events leaving an unforgettable impression on your mind.

I would like to thank all volun-teers who have helped at many of our events—it is always appreci-ated. Also, a heartfelt thank-you to our sponsors as well.

On a positive note, buckle your seat belts and feel those G-forces, because I feel confident that the best is still yet to come. Porsche on!

raised $990 for the Himalayan Project in the hopes of saving some lives. And the members enjoyed those challeng-ing trivia questions!

We’ve also been doing quite a bit of autocrossing—everyone feeling and seeing those G-forces at work while

burning rubber around the courses! We had some good times and a lot of smiles, not to mention the West Valley Police coming to investigate the go-ings-on at the Maverik Center. I talked

should be there, too! For this event we’ll be driving two different track configurations, the full course and the outer loop, just to mix things up a bit. Although I’ve driven the east, west and full configu-rations in the past, the outer loop will be new to me, which always keeps things interesting.

But when you’re ready to mix things up just a bit more, Spring Mountain is

probably our next-closest track, a mere seven-hour drive away. A number of organizers host events there—including the PCA Las Vegas Region, which hosts multiple DE events each year, so you should plan to pay a visit to our “extended family” to the west! (Also worth the slightly longer trip to eastern Colorado is the High Plains Raceway and the legendary hospitality of the Rocky

Mountain Region, but that’s a story for another column.)

Besides our DE and Club Race, there’s still plenty of opportunity this year to drive (whether autocrosses, tours or all of the above are your thing)—or not drive (come socialize with like-minded auto enthusiasts!). Besides the calendar on the opposite page, we occasionally add a “cars and coffee”-like event when the stars and planets align. So keep your e-mail address up to date at www.pca.org, be sure to drop in on the IRPCA Web site at www.irpca.org every now and then, and join our Facebook group if you haven’t already.

See you at the next event!

Z eitung and its usual editor owe a debt of gratitude to former editor and current Webmaster Debbie

Roque. When I had just a little too much going on in life, Debbie stepped in (on very short notice, I might add) and tackled the production of the entire spring issue. And she did a tre-mendous job. Thanks, Debbie!

Those who have been paying atten-tion may have noticed that, among other changes brought about by an update to our Bylaws passed last year, our Executive Council has grown by one member. The role that was formerly filled by the Vice President has been expanded into two: the Vice President of Activi-ties (held by the enthusiastic and energetic Diane Johnstone), and the Vice President of Communi-cations (held by yours truly).

While I can’t help thinking that this “promotion” is just a manifes-tation of the Peter Principle, I’m happy to give it my best shot for a year or two. (Although the station of Zeitung Editor is not term-limited, the office of Vice President of Communi-cations is.) Chief among the respon-sibilities of the VPC is to ensure that Club communications are effective, which includes overseeing the Web site, social media, e-mail communica-tion and of course this magazine.

Fortunately for me, overseeing these functions doesn’t necessar-ily mean doing the work—and even more fortunately, our aforementioned Webmaster Debbie was joined last year by Raleigh Fehr, who has been instrumental in bringing our Web site up to date and facilitating the ability of various contributors to create and up-

date content. If you haven’t checked out the site at www.irpca.org lately, you really should—you’ll see that my pride in our Webmasters’ work is well-founded!

On a completely different subject: While I haven’t been able to drive at nearly as many track events as I would like to lately, I did have a chance a few months back to meet up with a California-residing, Lotus-driving friend for a weekend at Spring Moun-

tain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada. Although I’ve been showing up pretty regularly at autocrosses, this was my first time on the track—any track—in about two years, and I hadn’t driven this particular Spring Mountain circuit in about two more, so I was feeling a bit apprehensive beforehand. But it was, as they say, like riding a bicycle, and before the weekend drew to a close, I was once again feeling at home at speed (and even ready for another session or two!).

So hopefully you’ll be seeing me on the grid—in between volunteer stints, perhaps—at our own Driver Education and Club Race event at Utah Motor-sports Campus next month. And you

IRPCA’s 2016 “Family of the Year” is PCA National’s 2017 “Porsche Family of the Year”!

At the Porsche Parade in Spokane on July 11th, our own IRPCA members Darrell and Shari Troester received the coveted “Porsche Family of the Year” Award. The award was presented in front of nearly 1,000 attendees at the annual Concours Banquet. Announced by Caren Cooper, PCA President, it was delivered personally by special guest Wolfgang Porsche! What an honor. Darrell, Shari, Blake, Greg and Landon, on behalf of all of IRPCA, we are very proud of all of you!

the porsche geneBased on conversations over the

years, I have concluded that Inter-mountain PCA members are well-above average when it comes to understanding and appreciating tech-nology and science. So it is difficult to admit that on a tour of the Eccles Genetics Laboratory at the University of Utah, I failed to ask a researcher if they had located the “Porsche Gene.” I know I have one, and—since you are reading this—you have one, too.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember the first Porsche I ever saw. My father and some fellow car enthusiasts started a touring club in western New York State in 1956 when I was ten years old. He was driving a Volkswagen at that time. The Tonawanda Touring Club had a wide variety of cars. They were predominantly foreign, almost exclusively European, and heavy on the British side, with MG’s holding the major-ity when you counted makes. Some of the cars were brought home by returning GI’s after WWII. There probably was a Porsche in the mix at an early rally, but I don’t remember it; I was definitely a Corvette kid at that point.

What I do remember was hear-ing my father pull into the driveway sometime in the spring of 1958 in a car that didn’t quite sound like his Volkswagen. It wasn’t. It was a 1957 Ocean Blue Porsche 356 with a brown interior. The badge on the back, un-derneath the single grille, said “1600 Normal.” I found my Porsche gene that day. His 356 was the greatest car I had ever seen, ever ridden in and ever navigated a rally in. It was the kind of car that should have been driven every day—until the western NY win-ters set in and the mega-doses of salt were dumped everywhere. However, his car was his work car, and it was driven every day year-round. But the

rust didn’t get his 356. We lived in a farming area, and a friendly John Deere mechanic did it in when he left out a washer on the distributor shaft. The engine seized (at a very inopportune time for one of Dad’s patients)—and the next thing I knew, the 356 was gone and we had another Volkswagen. He had owned the car for just under two years.

My dad talked about that car with great fondness for years after, but nev-

er bought another one. In 1970 he left private medical practice and worked the rest of his career in a hospital en-vironment in Cheyenne. By then, the small foreign cars had been replaced by larger “Detroit iron.” In Wyoming, the favorite vehicle became a truck, often with four-wheel drive. I decided that if I could swing it, I would get him another Porsche some day.

The “some day” took a long time, but in 2007 I found a 1984 3.2-liter Carrera coupe in Boise that was well cared-for and had low miles. I flew to Boise and drove it home on the one good day in January that year. In Feb-ruary my brother-in-law was in town for work and we had dinner. I told him what I had done, and he advised that me that my father was 86 years old, soon to be 87, and that might be too much car for him now. So I took it to Cheyenne in the spring, under the

guise of letting him drive it. In reality, it was a test drive to see whether he could handle it. So on May 20th, we headed out of the driveway onto the dirt road they live on, and he showed me his stuff.

In less than two minutes, I was convinced he had lost none of the Porsche skills he had in 1958. When we got to I-25, we headed north. He said, “What do I do?” I said, “Go to fifth gear and set [some number

of RPM that I can’t remember] and that will give you the speed limit, 75 MPH. So he did—until we came onto a semi going up a hill. He said, “I’ve got to pass this truck.” Down went the accelerator just as he changed lanes, and we went past the truck like it was standing still. He got back in the driving lane right away, but we never saw 75 MPH again. Soon we got to our exit for the hamburger and Coke. He said, “Wow, we are

in Chugwater already.” After lunch we got back into the car and he pointed it south. He said he was going to drive more slowly, because he didn’t get to drive a car like this everyday, and he was going to make it last. So we went 75 MPH for a mile or so... and then the accelerator went down, and we were home before we knew it. But all the way to Chugwater and back, he raved about the car and how much it was like his 356, except much more refined and powerful.

After we got back into the house, I said, “You passed your driving test; the car is yours if you want it.” He laughed—but when I pulled out the extra keys, title and registration, he got emotional. I told him how much those early years of rallying meant to me and how much I loved his 356 and wanted him to have another Porsche again. But my legal counsel was that

“You have to cool your jets. If the Highway Patrol catches you going that fast again they will arrest you and im-pound your car.” He said, “Oh. I only drove it that fast when I thought it was your car. Now that it’s my car, I will be really careful with it!”

He drove the car for two years, until he was 89. He drove it to Albuquer-que, through the spine of the Colo-rado Rockies down and back, and all over Eastern Wyoming. One day he called me and said, “My rotator cuff is so bad on my right shoulder that I can’t shift the 911 into reverse. I can’t back it out of the garage. Come and get it. I’ve loved it—now you love it.”

Epilogue: And I did love it. It was the greatest car I’ve ever owned—handmade with love by some guys named Fritz and Hans. But it wasn’t the greatest car I’ve ever driven. I now

have a 991 (welded by a robot named Clyde) with a PDK, and it has all the creature comforts the 1984 lacked. Turns out that at age 71, creature comforts start ris-ing in importance, and performance numbers start to de-cline. Why is that? Ventilated seats on a hot summer day. Sorry, Ferdinand.

On my dad’s 94th birthday I took the 991 to Cheyenne, and he drove it on the same road where he test-drove his 911. That time, I kept a close eye on the speedometer (GPS readout on the radar detector)

and saw 111 MPH. It didn’t feel that fast.

Now I’m wondering how fast we actually went that day in May 2007...

IRPCA: Making Wishes Come True

At our June HPDE, Margaret Clark—a patient of Community Nurs-ing Services in West Valley—went for the ride of her life! Margaret’s “Senior Wish” was for “a fast ride in a royal blue Porsche.” Many of our drivers stepped up to the plate, giving her and her family rides on Utah Motor-sports Campus during Parade laps!

Thank you to our volunteers, Diane Moore of CNS, and the IRPCA for giving us a chance to make this Senior Wish come true!

These are held in large parking lots (such as fairgrounds or the Maverik Center). They involve navigating a course laid out in the parking lot with traffic cones. Cars are run one at a time, or spaced well apart for safety. The events are timed, with each driver getting 5-6 runs. Speeds are generally low, with emphasis on get-ting through the tight course quickly. The design of the course is always done with safety in mind—generally, the biggest danger to you is hitting one of the cones, leaving your car unharmed, but your ego bruised. Hel-mets with Snell SA or M ratings of 2010 or newer are required, but loaners are available at the event. Participation in the autocross is open to anybody with a driver’s license.

Utah Motorsports Campus also pro-vides an excellent opportunity to learn the potential of your car. The Porsche Club has several Driver Education events there each year. Events are run on the same track in Tooele that professional race series (American Le-Mans, Grand Am Racing, etc.) use. We use either half the track (providing a course about 2.5 miles long with 10-11 turns), or the full 4.5-mile course.

how we rollOur club is blessed by some of the

best facilities and terrain for the car enthusiast. The Intermountain Region Porsche Club of America organizes a variety of activities to help you enjoy your car.

Several Driving Tours are orga-nized each year. These give you a chance to meet with other owners and take a nice drive on our scenic roads. Some are day trips with a stop for lunch, while others are multi-day trips with overnight stops. Stops are made for cultural events and to pho-tograph our cars at scenic points. We seldom have “single point” restaurants or hotels you must stay in, although a “Tour Central” hotel and/or restaurant will be designated to provide a gather-ing place. There is no charge for tours, and you are welcome to join or leave a Tour in progress whenever you wish. These trips are a great excuse to get out and drive those scenic roads that we never seem to find time to enjoy.

If you want to explore the potential of your car, a driving tour isn’t the best place to do it. Fortunately, the Porsche Club offers a couple ways to do that safely. The Region holds Autocross events during the warmer months.

advertising rates n four-color, per issue

The Driver Education events are a fun and legal way to explore the high-speed dynamics that make Porsches legendary. Although several cars will be on the track, the event is very safe, with passing only in designated areas (never in corners) and only with agreement between both drivers. Each driver will be given about two hours of track time each day. As with autocross, helmets are required, as are long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed shoes. Loaner helmets are generally not available, so you will want to buy one or arrange to borrow one for the day.

If you don’t feel like driving, the club still has a lot to offer. The Region has a great Social calendar, with events planned almost every month. The so-cial schedule generally starts in Janu-ary, and typical events include “date nights” to restaurants, plays and other activities. The social events continue through the year, with summer, fall and holiday activities planned.

Plenty of opportunities exist to get involved, not only as a participant but as a volunteer. If you’d like to help out with event planning, contact any of the Regional leaders on page 2.

regions for any of the variety of PCA national awards. As a region president at the time, I can attest to her efforts to push all of us to make these nominations during the 2016 year-end holidays. So thanks are also due to those who took the time to nominate fellow region members as candidates.

This year’s Porsche Parade was the largest ever, with participants number-ing around 2400 people. Around 50 cars and nearly 100 participants came from throughout Zone 9. The Zone was also well-represented among the win-ners of autocross and concours events. Congratulations to all of you who competed! family members. Simply an amazing bit of artwork.

Finally, we had three regions who won various awards for best Web sites. Alpine Mountain Region won the Best Overall Web Site Award from among PCA’s 144 regions. Congratulations to Alex Ching and Carl Ellis for all your work in earning this award. Carrera Region won the Best Overall Web Site Award for small regions, thanks to the efforts of “Webmeister” and former region president Dan Thomas. And Rocky Mountain Region landed the Third Place Web Site Award for Class V (regions over 800 members). Congratu-lation to Webmaster Scott Rogers.

The hidden story behind all of these awards is also partly due to persistent encouragement by Liz Shaw during her last months as Zone Rep to push region leaders to make nominations in their

Five Regions from Zone 9 win National Awards at the 62nd Annual Porsche Parade in Spokane!

This year’s Porsche Parade was a stellar week of big-time recognition for a select list of dedicated PCA volun-teers from throughout Zone 9.

Here’s a list of the major national awards won by individual regions in the Zone.

Accolades to Mike Suttle, his entire leadership team and the extended list of volunteers who supported the long list of activities in the Roadrunner Region throughout 2016. At the Porsche Parade, Roadrunner Region won the first-runner-up award for the “Ferry Porsche Trophy.” The Ferry Porsche Trophy is awarded for the Region of the Year national contest. At Parade, the award was presented by Caren Cooper, PCA National President, and accepted by Liz Shaw who represented the Region.

The next award was to Darrell and Shari Troester from the Inter-mountain Region. This national award was for “The Porsche Family of the Year.” Presentation of the award was made personally by Wolfgang Porsche on behalf of his family. I wish we could publish a quality photo of the plaque, but it is nearly impossible to photograph. The plaque is essentially a family tree, shown in the form of etched black and silver metal photos of three generations of Porsche families (Ferdi-nand, his son Ferdinand, and next-generation brothers Hans-Peter and Wolfgang) posed with their cars and immediate
