Presidents Message"" " " " by Allen Shirle

Folks, we have once again come to the end of an era. With this issue of our Klatsch, the publication

will go into retirement. That is until a member of the club decides that the Klatsch has an important role

in the viability of the club.

Arnold has done a remarkable job in keeping us informed and entertained with a quality publication

and for that I cannot thank him enough. The club has many great things going for it including a socialchair extraordinaire, Rusty Russ. Until we are able to find a new editor we will have to rely on Rusty to

provide the membership with future event information.

Our situation is not unlike most other volunteer organization in that 10% of the members form a core

group that takes on most of the tasks associated with running the club. Case in point, since I moved

here and transferred my membership from Hawaii in 1997 I have been the Vice President, DE

Registrar, Club Race Registrar, DE Chair, Club Race Chair, Chief Driving instructor, and now

President. That said, I do this because I enjoy the people and the things that I do to help the club.

We now need members to step forward and help us maintain that 10% core group. In fact, we can dobetter than that lets shoot for 15% or better. All it takes is commitment and a desire to get involved.

Remember its the people and the cars. The cars provide the vehicle which promote the brand but it

is the people that keep the vision alive. Our board meetings are the first Wednesday of every month

and they are announced well in advance. We welcome all to see what we do and be a part of the best

    club in the PCA.

From the Editor by Arnold Zea

As our president, Allen Shirley, has stated in hismessage, we have indeed come to the end of anera. I am deeply saddened that I can no longercontinue as editor of the Porsche Klatsch.Unfortunately, I have just too many pressingcommitments. I/we have beed trying to find a

replacement editor for months but unfortunatelynobody has volunteered. It therefore appears that,at least for a period of time, FCR will have nonewsletter. This disturbs me and I hate to leavewhat has been a fun position, However, I will beaway much of the remainder of this year and myforthcoming travels in addition to local and regionalcommitments to my family and medical practicemake it prohibitive to continue.

Newsletter editor is not a terribly time consumingposition, but it should bepublished regularly andthis is where I will have amajor problem. at leastthrough the end of theyear.

Siting on the FCR/PCABard of Directors hasalso been a terrificexperience. The timeand dedication of theboard members hasbeen enlightening; afabulous group of people totally dedicated to PCAlocally. For many years I served as a member ofthe Medical Board of Jacksonvilles largest medicalcenter. From my perspective the PCA memberstake their directorship every bit as seriously asthose in the medical center and with as much orgreater sense of responsibility and dedication. When PCA states its moto as: Its Not Just TheCars, Its The People, this is totally exemplified bythe members of the board (as well as by the entireclub). I plan to continue to try to attend boardmeetings when possible and encourage moremembers to do so.

In his Presidents Message, Allen discussed thefact that it is always a small core group ofmembers who participate at the different levels. Ashe outlined, some participate for the social aspect,

    others for the DE

s and yet others for the visits to

Daytona, Drive and Dines, etc. It would be nice see greater participation in each event; alwaysgreat to see new faces. The various boardmembers who plan the events work hard and dofabulous job ensuring that we have fun. In returthey ask for members to come and enjoy

themselves. Its your club and the more youparticipate, the more you gain.

I want to thank not only the board of directors fotheir friendship and support, but also all themembers who have assisted me and commenteupon the newsletter through the past couple yeaI also particularly want to thank those who haveprovided me with articles, photographs, andvarious stories. We need more such contributiofor future newsletters to succeed.

I plan to remain activhave owned a Porschintermittently since 1and continuously sinc1997. Although a PCmember, I did notparticipate in PCA eaon and now recognizthe fun I missed. For 5 years I have beenactive, I have learnethat the motto isaccurate, it is primari

    about the people.

This issue lists most of the events through the yend. More details always available on the websCheck them out. If the Mountain trip is still opencan tell you that it is a fabulous experience interms of the driving, and also the camaraderie afriendships that develops.

Thanks again to all FCR members who haveassisted me in any way through the past coupleyears. I look forward to continuing friendships.Hopefully an interested member will step up andtake the editor position.

It has been a great experience but as they say, good things come to an end.

    The Allure of the Automobile

The High Museum in Atlanta had a wonderfulexhibition this springtitled The Allure ofthe Automobile,

    which wassponsored byPorsche.

    Eighteenautomobiles wereon display rangingfrom a 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrowto a 1961 Ferrari250 GT Comp/61Short-wheelbase

Berlinetta. Therewere cars from the1930s(Duesenberg,Bugatti, Packard)built at a time whenpeople could purchase the chassis from one companyand have the body and passenger compartment builtby a coach builder, resulting in beautifully designedautomobiles.

On loan from The Collier Collection, was the 1953Porsche 550-01. Porsche had modified production

cars win races in 1951 and 1952 (winning itsclass atLe Mans both years) but the 550 was the firstPorsche built specifically for racing.

The highlight of the exhibit, in its own alcove, was the replica shell of the 1938-1939 PorschType 64, which was commissioned for theopening of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.Ferdinand Porsche designed the VolkswagenKdf-Wagen and then worked with his staff andhis son Ferry on other versions, the Type 66( a right-hand drive car) and the Type 67 (anambulance) and others. In 1937, Porschebegan work on the Type 64, a sports carversion of the VW. The enlarged engine (1.0

liters for the VW to 1.5 liters for the Type 64)and the aluminum body, which was designedby Erwin Komenda, would increase the speedof the car to a potential speed of 95 mph.

When a 900 mile race was planned from Berlin toRome, Porsche and others convincedthe National Sporting Authority to commission three

sports coupes using thVolkswagenType 60 aa model. However, with the start of war,

the race wascancelled, so hornsand othermodifications wereadded to the cars sothey could be drivenon the road.

The Type 64 was thefirst car to carry thePorsche name. Thelines of the Type 64are still evident in thePorsches of today.

The Allure of the !Automobile certainly

proved what the exhibit intended, that theautomobile can be a work of art.

September - Drive & Dine - Swamp & Train Tour

    Here's a really unusual and

    interesting event for a day.

Plans are to meet and leave

    from the Winn-Dixie Parking

lot at the corner of Normandy

    Blvd. and Fouraker Road (just

west of I-295) at 9:30 AM (be

    there early) on Sunday

    morning the 26th. From There

    we'll meander through the

back roads of Florida & Georgia

    to reach our destinations.

    First, a visit to the

    Okeefenokee Swamp for a

boat ride into the depth of the swamp. The wonder world of Okefenokee is a

significant part of America's heritage, a beautifully preserved segment of what

was here when America began. Headwaters of the Suwannee and St. Mary's

Rivers, Okefenokee is a National Wildlife Refuge which covers nearly a half million

    acres

Lunch will be at the Swamp's Restaurant.

Second, we'll visit the Folkston Funnel. The "Folkston Funnel" is a double track

which serves as the main artery for railroad traffic into and out of Florida. It's one

of the busiest tracks in the US. From the viewing platform in Folkston, visitors

can see trains passing on their way to and from Jacksonville, Florida in the south,

and a split north of town where trains go west to Waycross, Georgia, and north to

    Savannah.

This should be a fun adventure for everyone. Bring some friends !

Please RSVP if you plan to attend the event, I'd like to get a head count.

RSVP to [email protected] or call (H) 904-646-1111 or (C) 904-502-4956

Nicky the Snail gets Taken for a RideBy Nick Grynkewich, Jr.

Nicky the Snail Gets Taken for aRide

You know how it is, every now and

then you have a life changingexperience and I guess thats whathappened to me at Road Atlanta. But,to keep things in proper chronologicalorder, let me start at Roebling Roadthe week prior. Ray was out of town(Out of country actually) so my bro,Greg, came from Phoenix and volunteered to instruct, not to mention keep me on the straight and narrow.

We saddled up as usual on Friday midday and headedup the road, getting to Roebling in good time on areally nice afternoon. The forecast was great and wewere looking forward to some track time, but first wehad to suffer with the social on Friday night. Darn theluck!

Bright and early on Saturday we rolled out to the track, met our students, and got the car ready for the firstsession. Things went along really smoothly, and wewere all enjoying not only the track time, but ourstudents as well. Its nice when you have a goodlearner who really wants to get it, and get it on. I even

managed to take mine for a ride in my car, and we hada good run. When we got back he said, I did not thinkit was possible!

Saturday night we dropped in on the social where Gregand I had a little surprise cooked up for Kania. She hasa significant birthday coming up in May (Prudence anda desire to keep breathing forbid me from mentioningwhich) and her Uncle Greg and I had to do something. So, on Friday wed picked up a cake that wed haddecorated to look like a track with a broken, smashed

up black car at one end and a nice new silver carrunning off the other. If you know the history youll getit.

Id talked with Bob Linville and he was all for it, so, afterwed eaten the great BBQ put on by TommyRienheimer, Bob went up and grabbed the mike sayingthe usual thanks to everyone for attending, thencontinuing that since one of our drivers had asignificant birthday we were now going to have apresentation. He then introduced me and I was looking

right at Kania while I spoke. She had the most puzzled loon her face and was lookingover the room as if she shouhave known who it wasbeforehand since she's theregistrar.

Slooooowly the light dawnedmade a few appropriateremarks, then the whole roosang Happy Birthday. She

loved it and the cake was wonderful.

Sunday was more of the same with great track time, that is until the Black Group had the big one. I'll letsomeone else describe it, but I did breath a sigh ofrelief that Ray wasn't there. Bob and Allen Shirley didsome big time scrambling but managed to get thingsgoing again in the afternoon, and speaking of Allen, gotta pass this on to you.

Saturday, Allen was driving his students car when thefelt a clunk and the engine would no longer connect the wheels. Something had let go in the tranny and hstudent was essentially stranded at the track. Now itturns out that she was from Marietta and was a longway from home, so what did Allen do? He loaded hecar on his trailer, drove them both up there, droppedthem off at her home, then drove back to the track onSaturday night, that's what he did!!!

Nicky the Snail gets Taken for a Ride - contd.

Good on yaAllen, that wasabove andbeyond!!

    Anyhow, afterGreg and I got

home from allthis, Bert andAnn delVillanostopped by myplace and itturns out thatAnn is quitethe Italianchef. Shebrought along all her gear and made us home madepasta with meatballs, Italian sausage, etc etc. What agreat meal it was and I still have leftovers I'm enjoying!

Then Greg winged it back to Phoenix and I got the carready for Road Atlanta.

During the week I didn't have much time to think aboutit, but WayneO called and informed me (A bit toogleefully if you ask me) that the weather forecast forAtlanta was rain and severe storms. Just what Ineeded! The drive up there on Friday was fine, butsure enough the stuff rolled in that night and it wascoming down on Saturday morning. I didn't even rollthe car out of the trailer. The one time I even thoughtabout it the rain had let up, but just before the sessionstarted it came down again. Nick III decided he wantedto run in the wet since he'd never had his car out in therain, so he put some rain tires on and gave it a shot. Itshould be noted that he only did this once!

At the drivers meeting they'd announced that the onlytwo Boxter Spyders in the US were at the track, andthat they had two professional Porsche DrivingExperience wheel-men there to give rides. Well, itwas raining, Nick was on the track, I had nothingelse to do, so I wandered down to see how long theline was. When I got there I was second in line, and

there were two cars, soooo, I signed up on the spot!

The cars came in, I loaded up, and away we went.

All I can tell you is that I have a LOT to learn!! Theway he attacked the track, not only the way he doveinto each corner, but attacked in the middle of acorner, and his total car control was most impressive. It was very wet, yet I only felt the car just slip afraction and he immediately had it back undercontrol. I came to the conclusion that I'm a totalpansy. I realized this must be what a my student feltlike when he rode with me and it was my turn to say,

I did not think it was possible!!

Sunday dawned clear and the trackdried, so I was able to go out and givea shot. I actually tried to bring my leveup a bit and did set new personal bestlap times, but I do need more practice

no doubt of that! I had a great time witmy student, and my first session wasfine, but during the second session I wheading down the back straight when felt a vibration in the rear. I fought withmyself as I was in it with two GT3's anreally having fun, but then I thought ofmy history with tires and pitted. I could

see anything obvious and thought mayI'd thrown a weight, but decided that discretion ruledand since this was going to be my last session anywI quit.

When I got home and got around to inspecting the tiI found the LR had a big bulge on the tread where itappears that the tread is separating from the carcassAnother lap and it would have blown and I'd have bein the wall!!

You wanna ask me if I'm glad I quit???

Oh, I almost forgot. Greg got a 3D camera and tooksome pix at Roebling, so I'm going to send some ofthem to the PK and see if they'll print them. If they doget your red/green glasses out and see what you thi

    See yah at the track!
