San Diego Parade a Huge Success

Th e annual gathering of Porsche families commenced on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego. Th at city’s PCA region hosted the Porsche Parade for the third time (1977, 1992 and 2007). Experience prevailed,

as this was a very successful and well-organized event. One thousand Porsches blanketed the hotel parking area, while almost two thousand Porschefi les partied, attended meetings, competed, made new friendships, and reconnected with dear friends from around the country.

Th e Santa Barbara Region made its grand entrance on Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m. as the Charity Tour participants arrived at the Parade headquarters. Two dozen Porsches, including two Cayennes fi lled to the bulging point with canned food, one driven by Dave and Susan Stone, the other driven by Doug Anderson, terminated their quest for supplying food to the San Diego Military Outreach Ministries to benefi t the families of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines serving our country in far-fl ung deployments. Barbara Chavez, the director of the program, and her assistants were waiting to greet the arrivals. Ms. Chavez expressed her sincerest thanks for our club’s bounty and generosity. All the goods were transferred to the Ministry’s van, photos were taken, and expressions of gratitude exchanged. Also on hand to greet our charity participants were the Chairpersons of the Parade, Paul and Ruth Young, and members of the Executive Council of PCA. We extend our thanks to Burt and Marge Misevic for chairing the Charity Tour and

to Dave and S u s a n Stone, Lynn and Evonne K u c h e r a , and John and Jeanne McNair for their able assistance.

T h e S u n d a y n i g h t w e l c o m e

reception found our SBR participants at poolside, enjoying lavish displays of food and beverage. Huddled at a group of tables at the north end of the central pool, our members shared memories of past parades and voiced expectations for the days

to come. It was an early end to the evening as many had to rise at 5 a.m. Monday to prepare for the Concours.

Th e site for the Concours was about three miles from the hotel at a city park. Endless expanses of lawn awaited the invasion by the 1,000 Porsches. Volunteers were present at the obscene time of 5 a.m. to direct parking. By the time we arrived at 9, the cars were neatly arranged by judging category, and the paddock was jammed with a kaleidoscope of gleaming colors belonging to vehicles positioned according to model number and age. It was truly a feast for the eyes.

Th e Concours Banquet on Monday night was the most formal dinner event of the week. Black tie optional, but most attendees appeared in business attire. Th e awards presented that evening

acknowledged the Concours winners, but of special interest and importance to SBR was the presentation by Hans-Peter Porsche of the 2006 PCA Family of the Year Award to our very own Mike, Pamuela, Christopher, and Julie Hodson. Th is family has been a strong supporter and indeed a backbone of our region. Th e award was very well deserved. We are honored to have the Hodson family in our ranks.

Tuesday saw the competitive rally and the fun-fi lled gimmick rally. SBR’s multi-time national rally champion Joe Boucher was the Rallymaster, and he crafted a most challenging route for even the most experienced driver and navigator. Wednesday was Autocross day, all day long. Th e venue was Qualcomm Stadium with its endless parking lots. Th e course was long enough to aff ord winning times of 83 or 84 seconds!

Wednesday afternoon and evening were scheduled for the Fourth of July celebrations at Sea World. Most of the PCA crowd visited the dolphins, Shamu, and Cirque de la Mer before attending the Michelin-sponsored buff et that preceded the fi reworks spectacular. Th e only negative for the day was the extreme congestion departing the park. Some members took almost two hours to exit the facility and return to the hotel – a travel distance of under four miles.

Th e best (in my opinion) was yet to come. Th ursday night’s Victory Banquet was located on the fl ight deck of the USS Midway, the aircraft carrier that represented our nation from the end of WW2 to 1992. It is a majestic and awesome sight, and

Th e Santa Barbara Region continues to attract attention from the highest levels of PCA for its enthusiasm, ach ievements and membership participation. Th at is the

message I received from several key national fi gures during the San Diego Parade. I could not be more proud.

Th e most wonderful recognition came in the awarding of the Family of the Year honors to Mike and Pamuela Hodson, and their children, Christopher and Julie. Th ey were recognized for years of service to our region and for their commitment to the goals and aspirations of our membership. Mike and Pamuela managed our goodie store for four years, and they served on our Board of Directors with distinction. Th eir two children assisted at so many of our functions that

we came to rely on their presence and deeds.

I could go on, but everyone involved in our club knows how special this family is and how deserving they are of the Porsche honors.

Our annual Charity Tour preceding the Parade had everyone talking in San Diego. Upon the Tour’s arrival at Parade headquarters, national offi cers were there to greet us. Th e designated charity had representatives waiting. (See Parade article in this newsletter for more details.) Photographers snapped pictures, many of which were prominently projected on giant screens at the Victory Banquet on the fl ight deck of the USS Midway. Kudos and thanks to Burt and Marge Misevic, Dave and Susan Stone, Lynn and Evonne Kuchera, and John and Jeanne McNair for their management of the event. Th e Charity Tour would not have been possible without the generous support of Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and its General Manager, Richard Kolosky. Rusnak provided a delicious catered

lunch and goodie bags for all tour participants on June 29, as well as one of the Cayennes used to transport all the canned goods to the charity.

At each award ceremony, one could hear the winners announced, and the name of Santa Barbara Region was associated with many victories. Concours, autocross, rally tech quiz and history quiz – Santa Barbara was well represented in the winner’s circle. Let us not forget the dozens of our members who volunteered to staff positions during the parade. Th eir presence ensured a smooth and successful Parade.

What was the most visible pronouncement of our region’s health? Th e camaraderie exhibited at the numerous social receptions and meal functions. Wherever you heard good conversation, hearty laughter and snapping back-slapping, there were Santa Barbara Region members enjoying the festivities. We weren’t the largest group, but we sure were the happiest. I guarantee it!

Editor’s ColumnBy Janice Herndon

Normally, the Der Auspuff features our members’ beautiful Porsche cars. Th is issue, however, is featuring our members themselves and their participation in the Santa Barbara Region’s activities. Our club has been so active this past month that I have not included the Zone 8 Section nor the Goodie Store Report to make room for our coverage of the many events.

Santa Barbara welcomed members from the San Gabriel Valley Region at the July Santa Barbara breakfast. Our visitors spoke with various members to exchange ideas for improving their organization. Th eir desire to use Santa Barbara as a model for their Club is one of the sincerest compliments one can receive. It speaks well for all of us.

I was unable to attend the parade, so I enjoyed reading the articles describing it. I hope that all of you do too. Th e members of our Club certainly go all out for the Club. We all thank them for the time, energy, and eff orts on behalf of us all.

Please look for the registration forms for the Santa Barbara Autocross and the Concours d’Elegance at the back of the magazine. Th e events fi ll up quickly, so submit your forms promptly. Rich Shaw and Gary Gasperino have worked hard to make each a great day for each of you.

And, by the way, have you volunteered yet for the Autocross or the Concours d’Elegance? Please don’t forget to volunteer for the Ventura Show September 8 and 9 as well. I will be there and plan to spend the day enjoying all the festivities.

Finally, a heartfelt group “thank you” to the hosts of our Progressive Dinner. For those of you who did not sign up in time, it was truly a fun event. Our hosting members are to be commended for going way out of their way for the Club.

Th anks to everyone who submits photographs for the magazine. I regret not being able to use them all. Please check out the forum for additional photographs posted by members.

Our 2007 Progressive dinner was truly a group eff ort, making this event a resounding success! 96 people in 50+ cars met at the Sears Parking lot in Santa Barbara for what turned out to be a memorable 9 hours of eating, socializing, and driving from home to home (and one restaurant) for our all-day, four-course, progressive meal.

Steve and Th eresa Mascagno’s home

was our fi rst stop for appetizers. All but 2 of the Porsches were able to park in their lengthy driveway. Th e poolside setting provided a magnifi cent view of Santa Barbara and the coastline from their

hillside estate. We thank them for the variety of hors d’oeuvres including baked artichoke dip, 7-layer dip, taquitos, crudités (that is what we had), to name a few. Steve and Th eresa went all out.

Second stop was Charlotte and Ron Williams’ open and airy home in the very exclusive and scenic Hope Ranch area of Santa Barbara. Th ree diff erent salads were served on the patio, buff et-style, including a Mexican kernel corn-black bean-shrimp salad, a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing, and an incredible chilled couscous salad. Th ey were also kind enough to open up their cottage/studio to view Ron’s photography.

Our main course at the Hawaiian-themed Kona Ranch House restaurant

in Goleta included either dining either inside or on the patio. Part of the décor included sand, a puff er fi sh light, and lots of leis. Th ey were well prepared for our large group, meeting our thirst requirements and appetites by serving delicious prime rib, chicken Oscar, seafood pasta, and mango mahi mahi. Th e staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Th e smiles were still there when we left!

Gourmet dessert was served at the private museum of Chad and Ginni Dreiers in the hills overlooking the Pacifi c Ocean. Th e Dreiers were out of town but graciously had their staff open the museum for our club. Tracey, the Dreiers’ house manager, put out a spread of desserts similar to what one would get at a buff et table at any of the fi ne restaurants in the Santa Barbara area. Th e array included petit fours, fresh fruits, various cakes, cookies, coff ee and tea. Amil Garcia, an SBR member who happens to work there, was able to coordinate the parking.

Th e private museum is fi lled with thousands of collectible items celebrating all sorts of Americana from the 1800’s to the present. Housed in this converted offi ce building on the Dreiers’ property is a collection of sports memorabilia displaying many of the rarest items in the sports world today. Th e oversized sports room includes a size 22, autographed, Shaquille O’Neal pair of basketball shoes and

a life-size likeness of Shaq, which made for a Kodak moment. Th ere are rooms dedicated to Lucille Ball, Superman, Pez

dispensers, Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc. Our thanks to the Dreiers for allowing our group to be one of the few allowed to tour the museum.

It took the coordinated eff orts of almost 20 members to make the day go smoothly for those attending. We could not have put on a full day such as this without everyone’s help. We especially

want to thankse who hosted the courses at their homes. Th ose of you that were able to attend, be sure to thank the Weinsteins for their dedication and hard work coordinating such an extravaganza.

All in all, this was certainly a full and enjoyable day for all those who attended our 2007 Progressive dinner. It will defi nitely be one to remember.

The Santa Barbara 1000 Charity Tour

to the PCA Porsche Parade Article and Photos by Burt Misevic

Getting there is half the fun when driving a Porsche, especially when you are going to a Porsche Parade. And it can be rewarding too, if you collect canned food for a food bank in San Diego.

On June 28, 1963, region members Joe and Kathy Schneider were married and spent the night at the Royal Copenhagen Inn in Solvang. Exactly 43 years later, they were spending the night in the same hotel in the exact same room! Th ursday, June 28th, 2007, we were also there with them, to jump start the fun of a day and a half tour to San Diego with a Palm Springs stop along the way. As we munched goodies from the antipasto tray and sipped wine, we didn’t know that misfortune waited for us.

Friday morning treated us to a Danish breakfast before we journeyed on the tour route to Westlake Village, stopping at

supermarkets for canned goods along the way. Rusnak/Westlake hosted our lunch at their preparation facility where we had the privilege of touring their new car inventory. Most eye-catching of all was the orange GT3 RS, the one pumpkin in the Porsche patch. Its new owner took delivery as we all looked on, awestruck.

Afternoon and the 210 beckoned, promising a few more food stops enroute to Palm Springs. We expected 3 digit desert heat outside and comfy air conditioning inside (Kent and Tori Bodin’s 356 excepted). Th en, we reached Pasadena where the 210 freeway became the 210 parking lot. People going home from work, Friday getaway traffi c, and a big rig spilling oil on the 605 changed our motoring trip into a motoring trap. Bob Roe and Suzi Sheller overheated and dropped out. Dave and Susan Stone

stopped and assisted getting them to Rusnak/Pasadena. Lynn and Evonne Kuchera ate an entire jar of olives they had purchased for evening martinis. Th e McNairs abandoned the tour route and tried their luck on the I-15. With gridlock beyond our control we all inched along, picking up speed after Glendora.

Wilted and thirsty, we all struggled into the Palm Mountain resort. Everyone

made it eventually except Bob and Suzi, who left their disabled 911 in Pasadena and returned home in a rental car. After a few glasses of wine and more car talk, many of us strolled down to the California Pizza Kitchen for a late supper before sack time.

After two food stops in Palm Springs early on Saturday morning we joined light traffi c past the Salton Sea and Julian, stopping before Hwy 8 to queue up for our parade into the Town and Country Resort in San Diego. Welcomed by other PCA Parade goers, we parked to unload our food. Dressed in our Blue Charity tour shirts, our tour group posed for pictures with the collected donations which had fi lled our two Cayenne SUV’s. One was driven by Dave Stone

and loaned to us by Rusnak/Westlake, and the other was piloted and owned by Doug Anderson. Volunteers from the San Diego Military Outreach Ministries accepted the food donation which the Charity Tour participants loaded into their service van. Th e Charity Tour was over, and the Porsche Parade was about to begin. But that is another story!

Our sponsors were very generous in supporting this event. We are indebted to Rusnak/Westlake in Th ousand Oaks and Leland West, well known in PCA as a provider of automobile insurance for PCA members.

Your region members making the Santa Barbara 1000 Charity Tour possible were Dave and Susan Stone, Doug Anderson, Joe and Kathy Schneider, Kent Bodin, Lynn and Evonne Kuchera, John and Jeanne McNair, and Burt and Marge Misevic.

138 members, guests, and prospective members in 89 cars signed in with our membership chair, David Stone, at the Camarillo airport. Offi cially, per Dave, this is a new attendance record for a regular breakfast meeting! Th e parking lot was crowded, the patio seating was fi lled, and it was jammed inside the restaurant.

A large number of people joined our club at the meeting. Th ese included Joel Gabrelow from Camarillo. Joel drove his ’07 997 Turbo. Ben and Sandy Takeda from Ventura came to the meeting in their 1983 911 SC. Barry Statner, who lives in Westlake Village, arrived in his 2007 Boxster S. And Michael Graham from Camarillo also joined us driving a 1987 944 Turbo. Our newsletter editor, Janice Herndon, brought her son, Joe, to the breakfast. Joe was visiting from San

Antonio, Texas. Always the doting Mom, Janice fed him a full Texas-style breakfast before arriving and sat down and ate breakfast with the rest of the group. Th ose cowboys sure can eat.

Transferees to our region at the breakfast included: Bill Bodine from Los Angeles arriving in his ’06 Cayman S. Bill, by the way, is the President of the West Coast chapter of the P.O.C. Greg and Tricia Braun, Central Coast transferees, drove to the meeting in their ’01 Boxster. Th e Brauns live in Nipomo.

On behalf of our entire club I’d like to welcome all of you to membership in PCA/SBR. If you have any questions feel free to contact any of the board members. You’ll fi nd their contact information in this magazine. If you have any questions on any of the club activities, feel free to

email Val and me at [email protected] or call us, anytime, at 805-241-5641.

In addition to our new members, seven “prospective” members also came to the Camarillo Breakfast. Th ese included Jerry Larnick from Th ousand Oaks. Jerry drives a 2002 Boxster. Dan and Sherry Cook drove to the meeting in their ’03 C4S. Greg and Lisa Boswell from Ventura arrived in their ’05 Cayenne. Finally, Bob and Laura Davis drove up in their ’66 912. Welcome to all of you. We hope you sign up shortly and become full-fl edged members of our club.

President Nicolas Liakas introduced the Hodson family announcing that Mike, Pamuela, Christopher and Julie had been presented with the 2007 Porsche Family of the Year Award. It was

presented by Hans-Peter Porsche at the National Parade in San Diego. Congratulations to the Hodsons. Th e award is certainly well deserved.

Bob Campbell talked about the Ventura Show, the largest Porsche show on the West Coast, and asked for volunteers to help out at the

fairgrounds. Th ose who do volunteer are

given free admission to the show and a souvenir T-shirt. Th e show also donates a considerable amount of money to our club for all the eff ort our club members put into it.

We will open our goodie store at the Ventura Show. Th e M c N a i r s asked for vo l u n t e e r s who would be willing to help out

there as well. As usual, I emphasized the need to

sign up early for events. We are almost always sold out and are forced to turn members away. I announced that we were practically fi lled up for this month’s chili cook-off and, by the end of the meeting, had maxed out on that event. Look for an announcement in the near future on our 2007 Holiday Dinner and Dance. It will be held on December 15th at the Pierpont Inn where we celebrated last year. We will accommodate the fi rst 110 members who sign up. Th roughout 2007, participation at most of our events has been up about 25% over last year. With the increased participation in our events, the best way to guarantee your place at this party will be to register and send in your money early.

Th ank you all for coming out and we hope to see you at the next breakfast meeting.

Th e Santa Barbara breakfast brought 70 members and guests driving 41 Porsches to the Harbor Restaurant at Stearns Wharf. Th e incredible weather must have encouraged this possible record number attending this month’s breakfast.

Everyone had taken a seat in the restaurant by 9:00 and began the breakfast ordering process. After enjoying the fi rst part of our breakfast, David Stone, Membership Chairman, addressed the Club because our President, Nicolas Liakas, took a well-deserved vacation.

As this was the month for vacations, David also announced the diff erent activities for the month. He highlighted

the success of the Charity Tour and the successes of the competitors at the San Diego Parade. Mike, Pamuela, Christopher, and Julie Hodson displayed their PCA Family of the Year Award. You can read more about these in the feature sections of the Der Auspuff . Th e news regarding activities remains the same - the July chili cook-off is full and it is advised you sign up early if you want to be included in an event. Th e Ventura Show September 8 and 9 would appreciate volunteers. Please contact Dave at [email protected] if you are interested in participating in this world class event. You’ll receive free admission, free parking, and a t-shirt for your help.

David introduced members from the San Gabriel Valley Region who drove in to join us at our breakfast. Joining us were Larry Domasin, Vice President; Gladys Jaramillo; and Art and Joanne Iwasaki, who serve as Treasurer and Activities Chair respectively. Th e San Gabriel Valley Region is growing, and they wanted to see how our Region holds our breakfast meetings. Joe Carastro reminded our group that not that long ago, only two members showed up for a Santa Barbara breakfast meeting. We have come a long

way! We let the San Gabriel Valley Region know that we are available to provide any informa-tion that the Santa Barbara Region has acquired along the way.

Joe Carastro made an off er to help anyone who is interested in the methodology for answering technical quizzes. Maybe we should have a quiz class if there are enough interested members.

David then introduced new members, prospective members, and fi rst-time attendees. Our new members were Jerry Hogrewe who drives a ’61 356 Cabriolet and Cobus Malan of Santa Barbara who drives a ’05 Cayenne. First time attendees were Jim Mosely of Santa Barbara with his ’02 Boxster, Steve Doll of Ventura with his ’07 Cayman S, and Karen Kahn of Santa Barbara with her ’91 C2 Targa. Guests included Bernice Ramson, the mother of Diane McDonnell; Steve

Dalton, a friend of member Wayne Veca; and Chuck Kemmerer, a friend of Jerry Hogrewe.

Also attending were prospective members Bruce and Ann Bartlett. He has a ’06 Cayman S, and she has a ’05 Boxster. Th ey were active members of our region in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Th ey met at a Porsche event, started dating, and now are married.

Th e Santa Barbara breakfast meetings have very interesting crowds and always a few surprises. Th anks to everyone for coming.

Th e PMS (Porsche Mademoiselle Society) Women’s group went Wild Wild West on June 30th when they saddled up for a ride in the Santa Barbara mountains. 19 female members and their daughters, ranging from ages 10 on up, met at the Sears parking lot at 10:00 AM in Santa Barbara and caravanned to the Circle Bar B Ranch for a diff erent kind of ride. Arriving at the ranch, we were met by the cute cowboys who “yes ma’m’ed” us until we blushed. Of course, there were a few interesting dynamics before we even got out of the stable. Arthea Hermann and Phyllis Weaver, being horseback riding virgins, wanted horses that would suit their anxiety/readiness level - Dead! Suffi ce it to say, it made mounting the horses easier as they were already lying on the ground. Carol Matheiu wanted

a horse she felt comfortable with, so we inquired about a saddle that came with an automatic shift. Stacey Weaver, Phyllis’s daughter, wanted a horse that had two back ends (think “push me-pull you” of Dr. Doolittle), because the front end scared her. When the cowboy said he would rather have a horse bite him than “---“ on him, she relented. Karen

Turek had a laugh attack as the group before us came walking into the stable on their horses, and one person slid off onto the ground as she dismounted. She stopped

laughing when

it was suggested that that could be her when we came back.

Finally mounted up, all nineteen of us plus three cowboys set off on the trail. It was a beautiful day with nary a cloud and a nice ocean breeze. California’s drought was evident with the scarcity of water in the canyons and dry creek beds along the trail. We crossed a few narrow streams with black, muddy water that even the horses didn’t want to step in. Debra Laird’s horse really exhibited hydrophobia but, in the end, she showed him who was boss (watch out Gary!). We

took the trail up the mountain, through trees and brush, rising up to a magnifi cent view of the ocean and the Ronald Reagan ranch. It was so clear, we could see the islands. We were serenaded by the head wrangler continuing to remind us to tighten our single fi le trek, shouting, “Nose to butt, nose to butt”. (It took us a little while to realize he was talking about the horses.) He added that if we had any trouble making them move faster, we just had to push the button under their tails. Fortunately everyone was quite satisfi ed with the speed we were riding.

Jenny Maletz, Nancy’s daughter, got the one horse who pleaded hunger at every turn as he would nibble from the veritable buff et of weeds

and brush along the trail. When the cowboy told her to kick her feet to get the horse to move, apparently she fl apped her legs in such graceful unison that she was told she looked ready to take fl ight. Th ankfully, she didn’t.

Th e ride lasted an hour and a half with all of us a bit knee- and saddle-sore as we pulled into the stable. No one fell off or into the water trough but, as we walked back to our cars, their was a defi nite bow-legged thing going on. (I fi nd myself wondering if others are as sore as I am the day after.) We then drove to the Goleta beach and lunched at the Beachside Café (thank you, Karen). It was really delightful, with the restaurant right on the sand. Th e food was great, the talk never ceased, and the laughter was infectious. Future activities were suggested, such as attending

the horse races, a day trip to Catalina or a spa, or perhaps even an overnight to Las Vegas. We are open to innovative suggestions.

A fun time was had by all as we look forward to our next event in late autumn. Giddyup!

R.U.F. Visits the Getty Villa

Article and Photos by Nicolas Liakas

One of the world’s fi nest collections of Greco-Roman art is located at Th e Getty Villa in Pacifi c Palisades. On June 21, 2007 our region’s R.U.F. Committee visited this magnifi cent location and viewed the extensive collection. It was another day of combining good friendship with an exceptional educational opportunity.

Sixteen members met in Westlake Village and carpooled their way to Th e Getty Villa, arriving a few moments past 10:00 a.m. Two more members joined the group at the site, but eight others who had registered for the trip failed to appear (but gave proper and timely notice).

Th e group participated in a docent led tour of the grounds at 10:30. Emphasis was on the archeological signifi cance of the art collection coupled with vivid explanations of the architecturally dramatic style employed during the recent multi-year renovation. Th e entire complex has been designed in a manner to provoke the viewer into a sense of

being part of an archeological expedition. We were informed that Th e Getty Villa was modeled after a Roman villa owned and occupied by Julius Caesar’s father-in-law at the foot of Mount Vesuvius – just prior to the catastrophic eruption that destroyed the city and killed thousands of its inhabitants.

An hour later, the R.U.F. group was on a second docent tour that concentrated on the living habits and conditions in Rome around the birth of Christ. We were given insights into the use of various rooms in the villa, profi les of welcomed guests, eating and cooking habits, and the aristocratic hierarchy that ruled the

known world.Lunch followed at the

Café, situated on a raised platform overlooking the Pacifi c Ocean and cooled by its breeze. It was then time to follow an individual walk through the numerous exhibits. In addition to Th e Getty’s permanent collection of Greek and Roman sculptures, statues, frescos and other fascinating items, we were fortunate to view the special exhibit

borrowed from Th e Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg, Russia, entitled “Greeks on the Black Sea – Ancient Art from the Hermitage.” Most of the items on display were created in the fourth, fi fth, and sixth century B.C. and were located on the northeast coast of Th e Black Sea. Each and every one of us was impressed – wowed – by the beauty and

history of the collection. We also studied how the classical Greeks branched out from their home territory to establish trading, political, and military stations throughout Anatolia and all shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Th ey went as far west as what is now known as France’s Cote d’Azure, the north coast of Africa, and as far east as Persia and India.

Contact Nicolas Liakas at [email protected] if you are interested in joining R.U.F. on its future drives/educational excursions.

the tour of the living quarters of offi cers and sailors was very informative. Th e Parade ended offi cially at the conclusion of the ceremonies on the fl ight deck after the dinner.

Among the SBR members who won prizes for competitions in concours, rally, and tech quizzes were Joe and Nancy Carastro, Steve and Donna Krein, Alan Surgis, Joe Schneider, and Carolyn Ewbank.

(A personal note: We were disappointed on two occasions. Th e fi rst was at Sea World when the Star Spangled Banner was played at the dolphin pavilion and only about 5% of those present

(the huge, vast majority of whom were not PCA members) had the courtesy and mindset to stand up and remove their hats. Th e second was the Victory Banquet on the Midway, when all in attendance were PCA members, and the Star Spangled Banner was not performed.)

Santa Barbara Region’s Hodson family (Mike, Pamuela, Christopher, and Julie) was named national PCA Family of the Year on July 2, 2007 during the Concours Banquet at the San Diego Parade. Th e family was honored for its devotion and dedication

to our region events and activities, and for its spirit of camaraderie and sacrifi ce. Th ere are 55,000 members in PCA; the Hodsons richly deserved the designation of “number 1 family”.

Recognized for their tireless eff orts on behalf of our region, the Hodsons received the award from Hans-Peter Porsche, head of the Porsche family and chairperson of the supervisory board of Porsche AG. Peter Porsche acknowledged the Hodson contributions and stated that all of PCA has benefi ted from the example provided by the Hodsons. Mike and Pamuela were clearly moved by the award presentation and the accolades that followed.

Many SBR members were on hand to witness the award ceremony and to personally congratulate the entire family. It was an emotional evening for all. Congratulations to our Family of the Year!

Th e Optimist CreedPromise Yourself- To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

A National Historic Treasure in the Old Town District of Santa Paula. This 41 room Inn was erected in 1911 and named a national landmark in 1981. The Inn has lived to tell of the colourful eras and antics spanned by its near 100 year history. True to its Wild West beginnings, the hotel’s 3rd floor once operated as a gambling parlor and house of ill-repute. During Prohibition, a speakeasy was added to these dubious diversions. In Hollywood’s early hey-day, the town was a favorite big studio filming location. Stars including John Wayne, Carol Lombard, Harry Houdini and Steve McQueen enjoyed the gracious accommodations – and the bar.

Beginning in 2004 the property began major renovations. Now complete, the result is a restoration that pays homage to the hotel’s grand historical character while adapting the comforts and amenities desired by the modern traveller. Intent on honoring the legacy of decadence, the Inn has opened ‘The Grove’ restaurant offering a dinning experience that completes the Glen Tavern’s promise to indulge all seven senses. The Grove is “where the past meets the future”.

We’ll meet in Camarillo, at the McDonald’s parking lot at 4860 Santa Rosa Road at 9:30 a.m. and depart promptly at 10:00 a.m. for a leisurely drive through the back roads of Ventura County. The cost for lunch at The Grove is $18.00 which includes tax and tip. Lunch choices are Oriental Chicken Salad, Chicken Caesar Salad, Turkey & Swiss Panini with fresh fruit, Grilled Veggie Panini with fresh fruit, Pulled Pork Sandwich with fries, or The Grove Burger with fries and topping choice of Pepper Jack Cheese, Blue Cheese Crumbles, BBQ Sauce, or Portobello Mushroom. Dessert choices are Lemon Bar or Chocolate Cake. Coffee or tea will be served. A $10.00 activity fee per car will be collected when we meet in Camarillo.
