Gerade Aus!By Joe Carastro

As part of SBR’s Distant Member Visitation Program (DMVP), Henry Hinck and I made a quick visit to Bavaria in late March to check up on Alois and Estonia Ruf. Leaving Los Angeles early Thursday put us in Munich Friday morning where we picked up a Mercedes B-Class at the Sixt counter. The one-hour trip to Pfaff enhausen was remarkable only in that, at comparable traffi c volumes, there was much better fl ow simply because of the “drive-right, pass-left” philosophy (all on speed limited sections). It was also hard not to notice the pleasantly near total absence of SUVs, probably having something to do with the $6.50/Gal. cost of fuel.

Upon arrival, we did a short factory tour and were introduced to a young British fellow that was picking up a delightful blue 550 Spyder that Alois had found for him in Switzerland. As it was now lunchtime, we set off for a friend of Alois’s restaurant a couple villages away with Henry riding in the 550, which having only a driver’s side windscreen and it being about 4 degrees C. made for a brisk ride. (I am happy to report that the B-Class heater functioned most admirably.) After a delightful meal accompanied by tall beers, we returned and resumed our investigation of the RUF Automobile facilities.

The prototype RUF Cayman was just fi nishing being assembled as we walked out to the factory fl oor. Typically for RUF, the exterior modifi cations are fairly subtle but carry a defi nite intent. A new front bumper cover features a center front airdam section opened up for a radiator that is part of the air/water intercooler system for the 3.4-liter Kompressor engine that should be the most popular choice for the car. The rear bumper cover has been modifi ed with a new lower profi le and round exhaust pipes (a la CTR 2 and RT 12 models). A wider and deeper rear spoiler complements the aero changes to the front, maintaining the overall balance. Look for photos in the usual places soon.

At this point, Alois mentioned that he and Estonia had a meeting to go to in Munich and suggested that Henry and I take the “Green Frog” and catch up with them afterwards. So, with no sleep in 24 hours, we found ourselves on the Autobahn in the 3.8 Carrera S Kompressor R that was featured in last month’s Road and Track. On the no-limit sections, 240 KPH (about 150 MPH) came up eff ortlessly, just smooth acceleration, with no turbo eff ect. Wandering through downtown Munich, looking for the City Center was eff ortless, no bad habits. After some photography, coff ee and cake, we joined Friday afternoon traffi c out of town and quickly returned to Pfaff enhausen.

The rest of the weekend fl ew by and before we knew it, Los Angeles was visible out of the Airbus window. It was all gone by much too quickly but never-the-less, a memorable visit.

Porschelly yours,

Joe

Beginning with the July issue, Der Auspuff will become a bi-monthly publication. It was a tough decision based on mounting publication costs. We had two ways to take Der Auspuff – back to black and white on copy paper, or an enhanced bi-monthly newsletter with color. We chose to retain our popular format, and actually improve each issue. That’s right; we are adding eight more pages of content (four of them in color) to each issue. We are confi dent you will be impressed.

In the “off months” we will be sending you electronic correspondence. As a result, we need your e-mail address to keep you addressed of events and happenings in the club.

(For your privacy, the Santa Barbara region does not sell or distribute our e-mail list to anyone.)

Please register at www.pcasb.org to ensure you are informed!

I remember my university dorm wall… a beautiful silver Porsche 959 was the centerpiece of my collage of car posters spanning the entire length of the room. My roommate could have asked me to pull them down, but the 959 would have remained up. After all, it was my dream car.

Less than a month ago, I found myself sitting in the passenger seat of a silver Porsche 959 (see page 14). Nothing can describe the feeling of actually taking a ride in a car that has been nothing but a dream of

mine for more than two decades. Even better, this 959 was blessed with modern electronics pumping 600 horsepower. Bruce Canepa, my host, didn’t realize how much it hurt to climb out of that car at the end of the ride. To this day, confi rmed even more by that ride, the Porsche 959 remains the ultimate supercar in my book.

The Porsche Dealer Swap Meet (see page 18) was a blast. I hate to shop, so when I came home with a huge Porsche bag loaded with stuff , my wife thought someone had assumed the body of her husband – it just wasn’t like me. How could I resist such bargains? $5 Porsche t-shirts? $20 Porsche sweatshirts? $15 Porsche polo shirts? When accused by my wife of actually enjoying shopping for a change, I told her “…this wasn’t shopping, with prices so low… this was stealing!” She laughed.

Thanks again to our two local Porsche retailers: Rusnak/Westlake Porsche and Porsche Santa Barbara for their support of our organization.

future events when the newsletter is sent bi-monthly. It was suggested that an email be sent out to the membership on a monthly basis and perhaps a bulk mailer notifying all of upcoming events. It was decided to assess the attendance of the membership with the bi-monthly newsletter and monthly emails at the subsequent events beginning with July 2006 through October 2006, prior to bulk mailing notices.

Advertiser’ Report: Lynn Kuchera was not present. All advertising monies collected.

Rally Report: Joe’s rally has been advertised and will take place this month.

Goodie Store Report: Mike Hodson requested authority to purchase up to $300 worth of merchandise at the PCA distribution event on Saturday to be resold in the Goodie Store. Motion made, seconded and passed. Mike will begin to accept pre-orders for the purchase of SBR grille badges. Mike Harley is to get estimates of the cost for business sized cards to hand to potential SBR members. The cards will have minimum contact information on the front and back such as: email address, web info, breakfast meetings, etc..

Autocross: Barry Weinstein reported that Bob Holzinger has decided to step down as the SBRs Autocross Chair. There was discussion regarding the sponsorship of a Drivers Education at the Streets of Willow Raceway instead of an autocross. Mike Harley will inquire as to the possibility of sponsoring such an event perhaps with the Central Coast Region.

Concours: Joe Carastro is looking for someone to take charge of the Concours as he is going to be in Germany during that time frame. Joe

suggested heading the Concours up as a committee of perhaps three persons.

Activities: Barry reported that the rally is scheduled for this month. The progressive dinner is next month with the New Members Picnic in June. Gary Gasperino is out of town but will return to head the committee for the picnic.

President’s Report: Joe had nothing to off er this month (Ed. – Pretty funny, eh?).

Old Business: The scrap book is no longer part of the Region of the Year competition. A 10-page notebook can be submitted if desired.

New Business: James Oldham suggested that a grille badge be made for those 70 SBR participants in the Portland Parade. It was suggested that it would be too expensive.

Burt Misevic gave an updated report on the upcoming charity tour to the Portland Parade. Burt is seeking the sponsorship of Rusnak Porsche and the Portland dealership. There will be approximately 70 vehicles attending the tour and a starting point is being worked out.

Meeting adjourned at 9:45pm.

Secretary: Karen read the minutes of the March meeting. Minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer: George reported that the March Treasurer’s report has been corrected due to a few minor errors. In the future, all Treasurer reports will be compiled after receiving bank statements. George reminded all that monies turned in to him shall be properly labeled so as to expedite his job. It is to be noted that the upcoming increase in activity fees to $10 per car per event will begin on July 1st, 2006. Also, a motion was made that the entire $10 fee will go initially to the SBR general fund. At the end of the year, excess funds over and above operating costs of the club may go to our designated charity.

Motion was seconded and carried.

Membership Report: Jeanette reported that we are down four members for the two month period with a total of 628 members. Jeanette said that most members are just late in renewing their membership and it was suggested that an email reminder be sent out prior to the expiration of memberships. Currently, Jeanette sends out reminders for the 1st year anniversary renewals only. Joe Carastro urged all to renew with a multiyear membership, thus eliminating the continual late renewals.

Editor’s Report: Mike Harley reported that the Auspuff Committee has come up with its recommendation: Beginning with the July 2006 issue, the Auspuff will be a bi-monthly publication with an increase to 40 pages (32 black and white and 8 pages of color). By producing the Auspuff bi-monthly, we will be able to maintain the current high quality that we have come to enjoy. The committee felt that there would be little or no repercussions from the advertisers as their advertising is still good for one year (and each publication will have more “staying time”). Barry Weinstein had concerns regarding timely notifi cation to the membership of

Monthly Board Meeting

Minutes from April 5, 2006

The Board of Directors held its April 5, 2006, meeting at the Old Vienna Restaurant, hosted by James Oldham. Present were Joe Carastro, Mike

Hodson, Mike Harley, Bob and Jeanette Bassett, George and Mary Barrett, James Oldham, Martin Jansen, Valerie and Barry Weinstein, Bryce Boe, Burt

Misevic, Mike and Karen Turek. The meeting was called to order at 7pm.

Page 10: PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGIONPORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION MAY 2006 5 I remember my university dorm wall… a beautiful silver Porsche 959 was the centerpiece

SBR/PCA. When the Kallers saw how much

we were enjoying the club, and then talked

to a few other SBR/PCA members they know,

they immediately decided to buy a Porsche

and join in the fun. It seems that the word is

out that the SBR/PCA is the place to be. Glad

to have you with us Steve & Janet. We know

you’re going to enjoy your membership in

our club.

Mark Piscitelli of Camarillo also ate with

us. Already a member of PCA/SBR, this was

the fi rst time Mark attended a Camarillo

Breakfast meeting. Walt Branscome brought

a guest, Terry Quesinbury, from Wyoming.

Welcome to all the of our new Camarillo

Breakfast Club attendees

Doug and Sherrill Partridge, long time

members of our club and past Der Auspuff

Editors, came to breakfast for what may

be the last time they join us at the airport.

They are moving to Oregon. We’re looking

forward to seeing them on the way up to, or

at, the 2006 Porsche Parade in Portland this

coming August.

Another interesting attendee at breakfast

was PCA/SBR member Mike Furnish with his

2006 Porsche Boxster S. Mike took delivery

in Stuttgart, Germany in October. He then

drove the track in Weissach. After that Mike

picked up his daughter in Vienna, where she

makes her home, and put 4,500 miles on the

car before shipping it to California. Since

then, he has added another 6,300+ miles to

his Boxster. He’s competed in 3 autocrosses

and took two fi rsts and a second.

Our President, Joe Carastro, welcomed

all of us to the breakfast, thanked everyone

there for braving the stormy weather, and

presented Cindy Chang Salkin, from the

American Cancer society, with a donation

from our Club. In addition to all the fun we

have, a large part or our annual membership

is spent on supporting and donating to

various worthy charitable organizations.

Membership in the PCA becomes a win-win

situation for everyone concerned.

Kent Bodin, last year’s Vice President,

reminded us all about next month’s “Bring

Your Other Car” breakfasts. He said everyone

is asked to bring one of their alternate vehicles

to both the Camarillo and Santa Barbara

breakfast meetings. You’ll be surprised at

how interesting and unique many of our

members “other cars” are. Although one of

the fun parts of attending the breakfasts is

looking at everyone else’s Porsches, it can be

enjoyable to switch automotive gears (pun

intended) and spend a morning looking at

other vehicles as well. This should be a lot of

fun.

Mr. Goodie Store, Mike Hodson, mentioned

that he has a few “Limited Edition” coff ee

mugs from the Festival of Speed at only $10

each. Also he has a couple of 2006 SBR/PCA

calendars available for anyone interested

at the same $10 price. Dave Stone thanked

us all for coming and introduced our new

members and guests. Mike Harley asked

that if anyone gets their Der Auspuff late, (or

hasn’t received it at all) to please e-mail him

with the information, as he is trying to get a

handle on how eff ectively and how long its

taking from publication to in-home delivery

(Mike’s e-mail is Auspuff @schnellauto.

com). Bob Bassett thanked all those who

volunteered at the Festival of Speed, with

special thanks to Past President Carolyn

Ewbank for all the time and eff ort she put

forth on that event.

Prior to ending the meeting, President

Carastro asked that if anyone has input on

what they would like to see (or not see) in

Der Auspuff , or any thoughts on dealing

with the fi nancial problems we are incurring

with the publication, to contact him after the

meeting or email him with any suggestions

you may have on dealing with this problem.

Holding our breaths for sunshine in

May…

April Fools Day, 2006, the joke was on us.

The rainy winter season was still here, even

though we were well into spring. Thus, the

Camarillo breakfast had the lowest turnout

Val and I had seen since we joined SBR/PCA.

Only 80 people, in 32 beautiful Porsches

(and some in “okay to get wet alternate

vehicles”), showed up for the meeting.

We weren’t certain whether the members

stayed away because they didn’t want to

get their vehicles wet, their bodies wet, or

both. Still, all things considered, it was a

strong showing for what was predicted to

be a showery morning (especially when you

consider all the parking spaces, and half the

seats and tables at the Waypoint Cafe, are

located outside).

We did have a few fi rst time members join

us on this rainy Saturday, and two members

noticeably absent from the meeting.

Mike and Karen Turek, our Activities Co-

Chairs for the past three years, were home

with their family celebrating Mike’s OFFICIAL

retirement from the Fire Department.

Congratulations Mike! All the best to you

sailing, driving with the “R.U.F’s”, and doing

whatever you and Karen damned well want

to do from here on in. If the two of you enjoy

retirement even a small part as much as

everyone in the Club enjoyed your chairing

the activities, it’s certain to be a rewarding,

exciting, and fulfi lling time in your lives

New members, Steve and Janet Kaller,

friends of Valerie’s and mine from Thousand

Oaks, arrived in their stunning brand new

Arctic Silver Porsche Cayman S. They signed

on the dotted line at the Waypoint, and as

are brand-new members, they got on the

computer immediately following breakfast

and tried to sign up for the Portland Parade.

Sadly, they were put on a waiting list (the

parade is already sold out). However, they

still intend to go if they can get in!

Henry Hinck, and his wife Paula, brought

an entire table full of guests with them. In

addition to their daughter Zoe, the Hincks

were accompanied by Paula’s sister, Majella

Martin, her husband Derek, their 4 year

old son Diarmuid, and Paula and Majella’s

father, Jerry Carolan. All were visiting from

Scotland. Happy to have all of you with us

and we hope you enjoyed your breakfast at

the Harbor Restaurant. We certainly enjoyed

overhearing those wonderful brogues that

came with you.

Pamuela Hodsen talked about what

she had available at the Goodie Store while

her husband Mike was at the Distribution

Center buying even more merchandise for

the store.

I talked about the events over the next

few months. This month (April) we have the

SBR /PCA rally school and rally. May is the

Progressive Dinner. June we will be having

our bi-annual New Member’s Picnic and

in July, Nick Liakas and Mike Turek have

planned a very interesting drive and tour of

the Santa Barbara missions. This event will

culminate with a delightful BBQ dinner, with

entertainment, outdoors at El Capitan Beach.

We’re certainly looking forward to that.

Altogether there are a lot of fun activities

topped off with a lot of great driving over the

next three months

With so many members spending their

money in Ontario, the meeting part of the

breakfast was short and the eating and

socializing was very relaxed. It was another

very successful PCA/SBR Breakfast at Stearns

Wharf.

Although a large number of our regular

Santa Barbara Breakfast attendees were in

Ontario at the Parts Distribution Center Tour

and Porsche Dealer Swap Meet, 42 members

and guests, in 17 vehicles, still came

to eat at the Harbor Restaurant at

Stearn’s Wharf in Santa Barbara. The

weather (fi nally) was beautiful the

food was good, and the socializing

delightful. In fact, if the Distribution

Center Tour were not being held at

the same time as our meeting, I think

we could safely say that this could

have been a record-setting Santa

Barbara Breakfast meeting in terms

of number of attendees.

Steve and Janet Kaller, who

joined last week at the Camarillo

Breakfast, also came to the Santa

Barbara breakfast in their silver

2006 Porsche Cayman S. That’s two out of

two activities since they joined our club – a

perfect record. They signed up for the next

few events and told us they plan to become

very active in our club. Even though they

Posas Road to Pacifi c Coast Highway. The sun, the clouds, the breeze and the temperature combined to make perfect driving conditions. It is always a stirring site to view a bunch of Porsches, of all models and ages, caravanning down the highway. It is especially gratifying when the blue Pacifi c Ocean, the green hilltops, the open road and the glorious sky frame the scene.

Mike Turek led the convoy along PCH. At Leo Carrillo State Beach, Mike turned left onto Mulholland and the spirited driving began. This road is world famous, and rightly so. Breathtaking scenery, lots of curves, countless switchbacks and some detours make driving an adventure. Only one driver, Larry Stoops, slid sideways at one turn; all the other drivers were able to navigate the course without incident. Suzanne Stoops was not too happy as the snake road and stylish driving characteristics made her a little woozy. The group stopped at a turnoff near the highest elevation of the road and enjoyed the fantastic and never-ending view. Once composures were regained, it was off to lunch.

The Rock Store is one of those iconoclastic Southern California destinations. Everyone knows it; few have experienced it. Until recently, it was open only on weekends but is now open on Fridays. That is the only day when you can pull up and fi nd a place to park. Weekends attract literally hundreds of bikers, but on this day there were only another dozen or so guests in addition to R.U.F. members. It is not a place for fi ne dining. It’s the colorful history and aura that appeals to the casual customer. The inside walls are full of photos of celebrities, but the biker pictures capture the spirit of the place.

R.U.F. discussed plans for the May adventure. It will be held on May 11, but the destination has not yet been decided. If you are a R.U.F., join us for the fun. Contact Nicolas Liakas at 818/999-1600x203 or [email protected]

Finally, a sunny day! After days of heavy rain, the skies turned blue again just in time for the Retired and Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) Committee of our region to enjoy a scenic drive and fi ne dining. April 7, 2006 was the date, and the destination was The Rock Store on Mulholland Highway in Agoura. Fourteen members in seven Porsches made the journey. Joining in on the fun were Larry and Suzanne Stoops, Bob Yount, Garrick Newman, Bob and Jeanette Bassett, Mike Turek, Bruce and Jeanette Clemens, Chet and Joan Yabitsu, Dennis and Dianne Brittain and yours truly.

The committee convened at the parking lot of the Way-Point Café at the Camarillo Airport. We departed at 10:30 a.m. and headed on Las

The Porsche Supercar959Photos and Words by Michael C. Harley

Illegal on U.S. soil until recently, corporate miscalculations, government stonewalling, and clandestine importing operations pepper tales of the 959’s past. No need to bore you with the minutia - the 959s on these pages are 50-state legal.

Thank Bruce Canepa, founder and owner of Canepa Designs. An accomplished race car driver, engineer, and businessman, Bruce hunts healthy mid-life 959s from all over the world. Once purchased, they are brought to his Scotts Valley facility where they are kissed with the fountain of youth and vitality. It’s no simple process, mind you.

Manufactured from 1986 to 1988, the Porsche 959 did fi nally get “certifi ed” in 2000 for limited street use – to stringent emission standards. Once the catalytic converters and miscellaneous smog equipment were bolted on, Bruce found the stock twin-turbo 2.85-liter four-valve fl at-6 was down to about 350 horsepower (from an original 450). To make the car a viable threat in a Supercar arena crowded with cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo, Ford GT, and Ferrari’s 430 and Enzo, something would have to change. Confi dants at Porsche told Bruce Canepa that the engine,

transmission, and driveline were good for 600 horsepower – the new design objective.

To the untrained eye, the 959 appears to be a 911 Coupe with an aero kit. In theory, the timeless lines of the 911 have been retained. In reality, closer examination reveals it is a completely diff erent animal. Unlike the 3.2-liter of the late-80’s 911 era, the 959 boasts a sequential twin-turbo 2.85-liter four-valve fl at-six. The block is oil-cooled, with water-cooled heads fed liquid by a front-mounted radiator.

The 959 is based on a highly modifi ed, and reinforced 911 tub. Adapted for all-wheel-drive (the only driveline available on the 959), all steel body panels are replaced with Kevlar, fi berglass, and aluminum. Purposely sculpted to cheat the wind with a low .31 Cd., the zero-lift body has no rain gutters (an easy way to diff erentiate the “fakes” from a real 959).

At Canepa Design, the stock fl at-six under the deck lid is retained. However, the fuel injection system (including injectors) is replaced with a modern EFI system with full engine management systems. A new alternator, main wiring harness, camshafts, and modern spark plugs follow. The original sequential turbochargers (one spools up

before the second) are replaced with a larger ball-bearing twin-turbo system that allows both to spool immediately. New stainless steel exhaust tubings, welded to the modifi ed stock headers, fl ow hot gasses out new muffl ers. The “6-speed” transmission (G-1-2-3-4-5), along with the incredibility advanced (even for today!) driveline with electronically programmable torque split is retained. Suspension, originally twin-shock at each corner with adjustable dampening and ride height, is replaced with a lighter system using custom titanium springs. The stock brakes, massive drilled rotors and aluminum calipers with anti-lock control, are retained. The 17-inch 959 magnesium wheels, custom designed for Dunlop run-fl ats in the 80’s, are modifi ed to accept modern performance tires, powder-coated in platinum-colored paint, and fi tted with wider rubber.

Inside the cabin, a strikingly familiar place to a 911 owner, euro-spec gauges are replaced with U.S. delineations. The air-conditioning compressor and lines are upgraded, but R-12 is retained as the refrigerant. A new steering wheel completes the interior transformation. Tucked under Kevlar, the modifi ed engine is

The Porsche 959 has a history with more twists than our own Mulholland Highway.

a sleeping bear. It now boasts an absurd 610 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. By the clock, 0-60 mph is accomplished in just 3.2 seconds. Top speed is 215 mph.

Mechanically complete, Canepa Design brings the Porsche back to cosmetic perfection with seamless in-house craftsmanship. From supple leather to glossy paint, the Porsche 959 is as graceful as the day it rolled out the factory doors.

A ride in the Porsche 959, with Bruce behind the wheel, revealed spectacular characteristics.

Whether going to the grocery store or through the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, the modern engine electronics, running fuel delivery systems infi nitely more precise than the original, allow the 2.85-liter to be tractable from idle to redline. At idle, it sounds docile…

Slam the right pedal into the carpet, and the 3000-pound 959 launches like an F/A-18 off the USS Ronald Reagan. Under full boost of both turbochargers, the front tires rip at the pavement as the rear wheels struggle in their path. (Thoughtfully, the passengers are able to observe the mechanical violence through a dash-mounted gauge displaying front/rear

torque split – the needles spin wildly under acceleration.)

Even for someone accustomed to high-performance street vehicles - the acceleration is implausible. At full tilt, with a rather muted exhaust note, the feeling is similar to being pushed (um…rear-ended?) as the power seems to emanate from some other massive source. The thrust stupefi es the senses.

Acceleration aside, the ride quality was excellent. The chassis, even though it is nearly twenty-years-old, is solid. No squeaks or rattles anywhere. We hit potholes, and the 959 just scooted over them as if they were minor road irregularities. We changed lanes, and the ‘Bots Dots’ were unnoticed. The shock dampening is perfect. On the corners, the 959 reacted like only a 911 can. Short wheelbase, wide track, and excellent visibility make this Supercar Porsche the ultimate canyon carver. Enter an off -ramp at 100 mph and bleed the speed in a hundred feet without drama. It is amazing.

At 70 mph, Bruce put the 959 into 5th (really 6th when you take into account the “G” gear) and lugged it at 1200 rpm. Then, he fl oored it. The 959 pulled without missing a beat. He dropped it back into 2nd (um, 3rd to

you and me) and fl oored it. The 959 took off like a sidewinder missile. So tractable!

Back in the garage, the 959 idles comfortably – keeping a perfect poker face with regards to the hidden capabilities. You could make it a daily driver. Some lucky few do. The price of the 959 at Canepa Design is a cool $575,000 - and each car is sold as quickly as Bruce can fi nd one to modify. A used Porsche 959, with the Canepa modifi cations, is worth even more on the secondary market.

Denied the rights to run free in the States at birth, Canepa Design has done fl awless work to the 80’s-era Porsche. With modern electronics, fuel systems, expert cosmetic work, and a nod from the Department of Transportation, the 959, the ultimate Porsche Supercar, is belatedly granted permission to run, and beat, exotics anew.

2006 marks our third year as Goodie Store managers.

Obviously, the position has been an outstanding opportunity to

meet lots of you folks, and help give something back to the organization that has done so much to enrich our lives.

We would like to invite anyone with interest and enthusiasm to talk to us about the Goodie Store. Most people don’t feel they have the physical space to store the items, I can only state that the typical selection fi ts into our 930, so it can’t be that big. Any of the big items

such as the canopy, etc, we would gladly keep in our hangar.

Think about it, and let us know. It’s a great way to have fun, meets lots of terrifi c people, and help the Club.

We look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming event, and thank you all for your participation.

Regards, Mike and Pamuela

If the old saying is true about April showers bringing May fl owers, there should be no shortage of awesome colors this Spring!

Being a California native, and having never lived in another state (the same goes for Pamuela, are we the odd couple or what?), it is most certainly true that I (we) have become incredibly spoiled regarding the weather.

20 days of rain for the whole season is perceived as too much, most places in the United States would gladly settle for that many days of annual snowfall.

In any event, Spring is upon us, and I couldn’t be happier. Those weekend morning bicycle rides on my Porsche road bike have ceased being “True Grit” tests. The smell of orange blossoms is in the air, the bicycle and motorcycle allow me to enjoy the scent often. The hills are green and lush, fl eeting beauty to be savored for short time only until the long, brown summer returns.

For Porsche owners, convertible tops are folded. Removable hardtops are put into garage ceiling storage. Multiple clothing layers are replaced by single long sleeved T-shirts. Sunroofs are open day and night, while heaters are placed in the off position for many months.

The Goodie Store brings out the summer gear - tank tops, Short sleeve polo shirts, and the ever popular hats.

In early April we visited the PCNA headquarters in Ontario, California, for a tour of the new 100,000 plus square foot building (see page XXX). Fortunately, we were able to take advantage of some good buys on Porsche

Porsche Parts Distribution Center TourPorsche Dealer Swap Meet

Don’t Miss it Next Year!Photos and Words by Michael C. Harley

18 APRIL 2006 PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA SANTA BARBARA REGION

It isn’t often we fi nd ourselves driving 100 miles, each way, to a Santa Barbara Region one-day event. In this case, however, it was worth driving triple the distance!

Located in Ontario, the Porsche Parts Distribution Center is the West Coast arrival for OEM Porsche Parts that are shipped to dealerships nationwide. The huge warehouse contains tens of millions of dollars worth of brand-new Porsche parts, all neatly bagged, numbered, and binned on three-story-tall shelves. It was an impressive site.

Even more extraordinary was the Porsche Dealer “Swap Meet” spreading one-hundred yards down the parking lot outside the

Incredible deals on Porsche merchandise at each table!

warehouse. Countless Porsche dealerships had lugged hundreds of offi cial Porsche products and merchandise out that sunny morning for us – club members – at rock-bottom prices! We shopped (like sharks in a frenzy), fed by free Krispy Kreme donuts and coff ee, until our wallets ran dry. Yours truly left with no fewer than four Porsche shirts, fi ve Porsche posters, a Porsche pullover, a Porsche sweatshirt, a Porsche keychain, and some nice Porsche leather driving gloves.

Did I drop a thousand dollars that morning? Not even close. My total bill was $120. Obviously, you don’t want to miss it next year!

Here’s the deal. Four days of Porsche race cars of every description. You fi nd I all - 996 Club racers, 914’s, early 911’s, 993 Turbos, and everything in between. You fi nd open pits fi lled with great people who are friendly and willing to share their enthusiasm. You fi nd a world class venue hosting road racing and autocrossing, vendor booths off ering deals to help lighten your wallet, free parking for volunteering, a swell HI-VIS orange T-shirt with event embroidery, and the chance to make the Santa Barbara Region some money in the process…all for working a few hours up close and personal with the cars and drivers. Whew!

Where do I sign up? Why would any enthusiast not sign up? What’s not to like?

All of you who read my story from the 2005

event, and listened to me prattle on incessantly in person, realize that this weekend is one of my favorite events.

This year I had the pleasure of riding with Kent Bodin and Rich Shaw, which got the morning off to an early and fun start. Kent and Rich are “Porschefi les” of the highest order, of course Kent enjoys the earlier cars while Rich’s tastes are omnivorous. Every interesting auto on the freeway incites a debate as to the philosophy, styling, execution, and relative market success of the vehicle - between the three of us we either know bunches or at least we talk a great game!

My particular assignment for this year was exit gate security. Simply put, I kept the spectators out of the way of the cars exiting the

track. Adrenalin from the track is still strong in the veins; care needs to be taken to insure that mental gears are switched from ‘track” to “pit” mode, along with the appropriate speeds.

Not only do I get to see al the cars up close and personal as they exit the track, the sounds of the cars are there for me to savor.

Even though the drivers are busy, with much to focus on, many of them give a friendly wave or nod as the roll past. What better way to feel appreciated?

My particular shift was from 8-12 on Sunday, which sounds like a lot of time. Thanks to the racing schedule, incorporating breaks between classes, the work pace was the perfect balance of enough to do, but with long idle periods to check out the pits, check vendor row, and of course take care of essential biological business.

The event will happen again in 2007, I encourage everyone to participate in a great day of fun.

Special thanks to Carolyn Ewbank for her four days of hard work. Without her and people like her the event would never happen, much less in a organized way that is fun and enjoyable for everyone in attendance.

The Santa Barbara Region of PCA is trying to form an autocross event committee. The eff ort to host a quality event has necessitated the need for this committee. Several positions will need to be fi lled and we’re sure there are others that have not been thought of. Positions such as an autox chairperson vice chair, track layout, equipment, registration, tech, sponsorship, advertising, etc. The committee will defi ne all of these positions duties once formed. If you’re interested in volunteering to support these exciting and rewarding events, please contact Bob Holzinger at [email protected] or (805) 650-6659.
