Congratulations on obtaining a position on the Graduate Leadership Programme at Morgan Advanced Materials. We are sure that you are both excited and nervous to start and you probably have some questions about where you will be working, so here’s a little guide to make everything a little clearer.

THE SOUTHAMPTON SITE

The Southampton site manufactures sensors and transducers in a number of applications. These include products for defence, medical applications, metering and process control and a variety of other industrial applications.

The product range is diverse but all products are based around PZT using ultrasonic frequencies to serve their desired purpose.

Both the Southampton and Ruabon sites are linked and are referred to as EC&S (Electroceramics and Sensors).

Key Products:• Piezoelectric Components • Dielectric Components

What to expect on your first dayOn your first day you will meet your new team and be shown around your department. You will also be given a full introduction to the company, which will include a site tour, spending time in the factory, and inductions with HR, IT and EH&S (Environmental, Health and Safety).

During the week your manager will run through what is expected of you throughout the year, go into more details about the projects you will be working on and will set your objectives.

Dress Code:Day-to-day the dress code is business casual - this means smart trousers and a shirt/jumper for gents (not suit and tie) and smart trousers/skirt for ladies (again not a suit). If you are attending a meeting or presenting then check with your line manager if you need to wear more formal attire.

PLACES TO VENTURE:

Southampton has pretty much everything, including various DIY stores and all major Supermarkets.

LOCAL SUPERMARKETS• Tesco• Sainsbury’s• Lidl• Waitrose

IF YOU’RE INTO SPORTS...Because Southampton is such a major city, it really depends where you end up basing yourself with regards to nearby sports clubs. Each small town has a nearby football / rugby / basketball / squash club etc. We would recommend joining your local team depending on the standard of sport that you play, if you’re looking for very high quality then Southampton city teams will most likely satisfy you. However they do tend to be expensive and miss the community feel of a small local club.

offered at very low prices• PURE Gym is a 5 minutes drive away from the Southampton site• The local leisure centre is a 10 minutes drive and has a pool

THINGS TO DO AND PLACES TO SEE

There are a lot of other things you can do during your free time, here are just a few ideas...

A NIGHT OUT WITH FRIENDS?

Southampton has a lot of places to go for a night out, including most of the standard chains like Vodka Revs, Oceania etc. There are a few places around Portswood that are more niche in terms of music and suit the individual better (it’s also the student area so is much more reasonably priced). Jesters is famous for being one of the worlds’ worst clubs and it is definitely worth the visit.

• Winchester Cathedral• Netley Abbey• Mayflower Theatre• Royal Victoria Country Park• Solent Sky• Rose Bowl

PLACES TO EAT:Oxford Street is the nicest high street to go out for a meal or for a few drinks, it has the standard chains plus a few more independent restaurants.

PLACES TO VISIT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY...• Jolly Sailor: A nice place to go with family if you’re looking for something close to work.

• Hamble: This is a great place to go for a walk.

• The River Rat : Has some great wine. Although it isn’t particuarly cheap the food is

brilliant.

• The Black Bottle in Winchester: A really cosy wine bar, you can spend the evening

dispensing yourself wine from the machines and play some board games with your

friends.

• Oxford: The Botanical Gardens are great and the river is worth a punt! A tour of the

colleges is a must (you can do it by foot for free) and there’s a little bar (only when the

weather is good) called ‘Turf’.
