Ariel (right) was 9 and Yigal (left) was 7. It seemed to Debbie her daughter Tamar, sold her house one day, packed it up the next and the family moved to Israel. Debbie and Moshe had strong ties to Israel. Debbie’s own father was a Yerushalmi. Moshe’s parents were holocaust survivors who lived in Israel at one time. Tamar belonged to Bnei Akiva and went to Camp Moshava. The Webers arrived in Israel just before the Intifada of 2002. To Tamar’s credit, she was determined to make it work. They settled in Modiin. Ariel attended high school and yeshiva before entering the IDF. He has just completed his 3 years of service. Ariel served in the artillery and received training as a medic. Ariel’s motto is “If you do something, do it well”. This led to Ariel receiving the honor of the Brigadier’s beret upon completion of his basic training. During the Gaza War, Ariel’s job was to electronically track the coordinates of the enemy for the benefit of his unit . Ariel has now taken a 4 month vacation and is with his grandparents in NY. He plans to attend Hebrew U. He will major in biology and then apply to veterinary college. Yigal chose the Hesder route, combining advanced Talmudic studies with his military service. Yigal has already completed 1½ years of service in a non-combative infantry unit. He serves as an assistant to the Director of Weaponry. His duties include scheduling, attendance, logistic and translation. He has been assigned the responsibility of translating weaponry manuals from English to Hebrew. He also translates for the foreign English speaking soldiers who serve on his base. These soldiers are in awe of an American born Israeli who serves in the army and also of Yigal’s knowledge of the current American sports team and their standings. It is too early to know what Yigal plans to do upon completion of his service. There is no doubt Yigal will take advantage of the opportunities open to him. It goes without saying, both Debbie and Moshe are proud of their IDF grandsons’ accomplishments. Their concerns for their safety during their grandsons’ tour of duty are natural especially during Ariel’s service during the Gaza war. Debbie emphasized that we do have to remember every soldier is someone’s child. Our prayers should be for every soldier.
