ONE YMCA, A WORLD OF OPTIONS...Dear Parents and Guardians,

At YMCA summer camps, children learn leadership skills and develop self-confidence in a safe, accepting, and stimulating environment. They also build robots, go on field trips, shoot hoops, learn to swim, make new friends, and laugh all summer long!

Our creative, educational camp programming — structured around the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility — helps campers reach their fullest potential, physically, mentally, and emotionally. All Y camps are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). The Y ensures that children’s learning and development extends beyond the school year, enriching and complementing their education.

New York City’s YMCA offers a wide range of engaging summer day and sleepaway camp options that accommodate all families. You’ll find programs convenient to home and work, and programs that meet your child’s interests and abilities. Children can enroll in just a few weeks at camp, or spend the entire summer with us. All Y camps feature:

• Well-trained staff who serve as positive role models

• Activities and games that develop self-esteem and leadership skills

• Activities that promote cultural diversity

• Lessons in conservation and protecting our environment

• Exposure to new age-appropriate, challenging, and fun experiences

• An atmosphere that fosters fairness, teamwork, and cooperation

• Visits to the city’s top attractions, including zoos, aquariums, parks, and museums

• Health, exercise, and nutrition education

Last year, the Y proudly served more than 12,000 campers in New York City, where we’ve been helping parents and their children have the best summer ever since 1885.

We’re excited to embark on another summer of fun and learning with you and your children. Thank you for choosing summer camp at New York City’s YMCA. We look forward to getting to know your camper!

Day Campers will engage in activities that will enhance their social and emotional skills, help keep their academ-ics on track, keep them physically active and challenge them to learn new things every day. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and take exciting trips throughout New York City. Campers will participate in a wide range of sports, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Crazy Hat Day. In addition, campers will en-gage in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math activities during each session. Day campers will be divided into age groups with children within one to two years of their age.

Day Camp activities are designed to help children retain and build upon the academic skills they have developed during the school year. Research has shown that children can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and partici-pate in facilitated discussions. In addition, activities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize educational enrichment.

Research has shown that children can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and participate in facil-itated discussions. In addition, activities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips will link to the camp-based activities and maximize enrichment.

Early Childhood Camp AGES 3-5.8

Early Childhood Camp is for children from age 3 up to 5-year-olds entering kindergarten in September 2018. It provides our youngest campers with hands-on, expe-riential, fun activities planned to support each child’s social, physical, and cognitive skill development. Activities include instructional swimming, indoor and outdoor phys-ical fitness, and an introduction to sports such as mini soccer, basketball, and T-ball. Campers also enjoy music and movement, cooking, arts and crafts, and interactivescience, language, and literacy activities.

Each week, campers will be engaged in activities fo-cused on different and exciting themes, culminating in a special event at the end of each week. Possible themes include: the Circus, Olympics, Safari Jungle, Hawaiian Fun, Space, and Patriotism. Campers will enjoy visits from child-friendly organizations bringing farm animals, musi-cians, storytellers, and magic, and will also go on commu-nity excursions within walking distance of camp. Campers entering kindergarten in September 2018 will develop skill sets that will help them feel comfortable in a group setting. They will become more independent and more self-reliant, helping to prepare them for their transition to kindergarten. Staff members experienced in engaging with preschoolers understand the importance of rich adult-child interactions, and focus on building supportive, nurturing relationships with every camper. Early childhood campers will receive one t-shirt to wear on special event days. Children need to be potty/toilet trained.

Day Camp AGES 5.9-11

Day Camp is for children entering first through sixth grade. Day Campers will engage in activities that will enhance their social and emotional skills, help keep their academics on track, keep them physically active, and challenge them to learn new things every day. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and take excit-ing trips throughout New York City. Campers will partic-ipate in a wide range of sports, instructional swimming, arts and crafts, and weekly themed activities based on our camp theme. In addition, campers will engage in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathactivities during each session. Campers will be divided into age groups with children within one to two years of their age.

Day camp activities are designed to help children retain and build upon the academic skills they have developed during the school year. Research has shown that chil-dren can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and participate in facilitated discussions. In addition, ac-tivities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize educational enrich-ment. Day camp is available for children born between 2007-2012.

Day Camp AGES 6-12

Day Campers will engage in activities that enhance their social and emotional skills, help keep their academics on track, keep them physically active, and challenge them to learn new things every day. They will have the opportuni-ty to make new friends and take exciting trips throughout New York City. Campers will participate in a wide range of sports, instructional swimming, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Crazy Hat Day. In addition, campers will engage in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math activities during each session. Day campers will be divided into age groups with children within one to two years of their age.

Day Camp activities are designed to help children retain and build upon the academic skills they have developed during the school year. Research has shown that chil-dren can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and participate in facilitated discussions. In addition, ac-tivities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math, and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize the educational environment.

Camp McAlister AGES 7-11

Camp McAlister is designed to provide a happy and successful introduction to the magical world of sleep-away camp. Small group sizes (six campers per cabin), low staff-to-camper ratios, and staff chosen for their experi-ence working with younger children ensure campers have a safe, nurturing and fun first camp experience. Campers explore a wide range of activities including swimming, archery, arts and crafts, field games of every variety, canoeing, hiking, and much more. Friendships form and deepen as cabin groups become like family. Each day brings more opportunities for shared meals, new experi-ences, outdoor adventures, and late night laughter.

Camp Talcott AGES 11-14

Just up the hill from Camp McAlister, Camp Talcott provides the perfect next step for pre-teens and young teenagers ready to expand their horizons. Recognizing that teens crave independence, but still need a struc-tured, safe environment in which to express themselves, our program gives teens the opportunity to shape their own camp experience. After sampling a wide range of camp activities in the first days of each session, Talcott campers can choose their favorites each week to explore more deeply. With an eye toward developing our future staff, we focus on fostering responsibility, confidence, and leadership skills among campers, while simultaneous-ly ensuring a fantastic time!
